The country’s giant fishing fleet is chronically short of up to 60,000 fishermen per year, leaving captains scrambling to find crew. Brassed Off! heads to the stage later this month, along with a full brass band...
We’ve no shortage of love for the wonderful Brassed Off! around these parts, Mark Herman’s superb film about a miners’ colliery band and how its future is threatened when the coal mine itself comes under threat of closure. There was a time when Bill Gates was not quite the man he is now. He’s been lauded as one of the world’s richest men, an American business magnate, an investor, and a philanthropist. Following director Mary Harron’s recent “Anatomy of a Scene” video for the New York Times, one of the most famous sequences in “American Psycho” has a new look. Mara Wilson, late of “Matilda” and more recently a prominent voice on social media, stars in this female-led version of the business-card scene that birthed the famous line, “Oh my god, it even has a watermark.” (Warning: If the you consider the very notion of an all-female “Ghostbusters” a personal affront, this may not be the video for you.)

If the transformation is a character’s external change then the meltdown is the internal equivalent. Sometimes the most terrifying part of a horror film isn’t when the monster pops out, but when a character loses his or her grip on reality. The psychosis can begin gradually, exacerbated by stress, sickness, or an outside tormentor. Often the character begins a film in complete control of his or her mental faculties. But control is a relative term, and in a horror film, the illusion of control can be just as powerful as actual agency. The options: denial or embracement. The psychological break will come soon enough. The only question is, how broken will the person be once it does?

A radically beefed-up Jared Leto has proudly unveiled his Superman vest-clad, muscular physique for his forthcoming role as the Joker in Suicide Squad.
The Oscar-winning star has become renowned for taking on 'anti-vanity' parts which often render him unrecognisable in most of his adventurous acting roles to date.
Often going to unbelievable lengths for a part, we celebrate his constant movie metamorphosis with 6 incredible on-screen transformations.

Leto played the platinum blonde Angel Face, whose handsome looks are transformed after he's left toothless and grotesquely deformed following Norton's brutal beating.
The actor toned up for the role and bleached his hair and eyebrows - aspects which bear some similarities to his recent transformation into the frightening, green-haired Joker.

There’s perhaps no other character study this mercilessly satirical, or this inclined to ride the bloody surface of an American symbol all the way to the end. Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) never lifts off the screen to be anything but a rampaging, lampooning, psychotic cartoon. He shivers at the sight of a watermark on Paul Allen’s business card, a phallic comparison; sexuality replaced by the scented highs of Bone and Silian Rail. Bateman never ceases to be a representation of the bottomless pit of American consumerism, and he embodies that as a mass murdering loon. It’s because of what he stands for that the film makes no efforts in humanizing him, because, well, what’s human about the shit that moves at the top of American capital?
But some viewers seem to misunderstand American Psycho’s final third, as a revelation that Bateman’s murders were pure fantasy.

Better late than never on filing a report from yesterday's Spirit Awards and pre-Oscar festivities, I guess. It was a late night, Harvey Weinstein and his peeps rounding things out with a big soiree/dinner that drew to a close around midnight, so my bed was far more enticing than my keyboard when I got back to the homestead. The Spirit Awards are generally my favorite event of the season, largely because the imbibing starts early and the attitude is super lax. But it's also my own personal bow on things (as I always happily steer clear of the Oscars), saying final goodbyes to colleagues and talent I've interacted with consistently over the season. And given that Film Independent was apparently looking to break the record for most commercial breaks in a single awards show, I was able to bounce around and catch up with just about everyone I was hoping to.

Going to the movies is expensive, and in this economy there’s less incentive than usual to make it to the multiplex just for a couple hours of entertainment, especially when so much of it is just reruns on the big screen (another Dracula, seriously?) — never mind all the other complaints you all have about the theatrical experience. The movies should be seen as a getaway from our troubles, just as they were for much of the Great Depression, but this time around we have so many other options to keep us distracted. Well, what if there was a movie playing in theaters for free? Yeah, you’ll still have to pay for a babysitter, gas, parking and concessions, if those things apply, but the main event costs you nothing on October 20th when you go out to see a bunch of new movies by Adam McKay (Anchorman), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Jon M. American Psycho (2000, costume designer Isis Mussenden) is a late 1980s set film that highlights the importance placed on external appearance and the disparity that can lie between this and the true nature of a person. The ‘Psycho’ of the title, Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale) is outwardly flawless. He has an extreme and involved personal beauty regime, consisting of special shampoos, body washes, face masks and scrubs, complemented by a strict diet and exercise plan that he completes daily and without fail. He believes in looking after himself – or at least his external self.
Beneath this perfectly glossy exterior is emptiness – a lack of humanity, of compassion, emotion or any concept of the value of human life. As he himself says, on the surface is where his similarities to those around him end: “There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me,...

With the Xbox One set to launch in a few days, the attention of many gamers is set squarely on the next-generation video game console and all the promise that it holds. While that excitement is entirely justified, there are some very real factors in play that have the potential to bring an early end to their enjoyment of the $500 console.
For many consumers, the notion that there is any risk of Microsoft exiting the video game console business is inconceivable. The average Xbox 360 owner has likely spent at least $300 or $400 on hardware and accessories, purchased a sizable library of physical and digital software, and shelled out up to $60 a year for an Xbox Live Gold account. Multiply that (or a similar) experience times the impressive 80 million Xbox 360 consoles shipped worldwide since November 2005, and it must be nothing but sunshine and lollipops over at Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division (Edd), right?...

In "American Psycho, Christian Bale's Bateman is obsessed with Huey Lewis and the News, and rants about the band before he kills his colleague Paul Allen, played by Jared Leto. Here it's Kim Kardashian's friend Jonathan Cheban who is the victim of murder.
"Now Kanye's decided to release this, 'Yeezus,' the most exciting record so far. It should be obvious by now that 'New Slaves' is the undisputed masterpiece on 'Yeezus,' a song so catchy that most people won't even remember the lyrics -- but they should," Disick rants to Cheban before killing him in the video with an axe.

The frequent comparisons drawn between Scott Disick and Patrick Bateman have apparently gone to the reality star's head, because he's attempted to portray the iconic serial killer -- a character first brought to terrifying cinematic life by Christian Bale -- in an online short.
Disick, most famous for being Kourtney Kardashian's boyfriend and baby daddy, stepped into Bateman's designer suit and shoes to recreate an infamous "American Psycho" scene as part of a promotional stunt for Kanye West's latest album, "Yeezus." (Now that Kanye is also a Kardashian baby daddy -- girlfriend Kim gave birth to their daughter on June 15 -- he and Disick share one of those bonds only Hollywood can forge.)
In the original scene, Bale's Bateman delivers a monologue about Huey Lewis and the News before donning a see-through raincoat and dispatching Jared Leto's Paul Allen with an axe.

It's still pretty lame, but Kanye West's American Psycho homage as Yeezus (out today) commercial (starring Kourtney Kardashian's boyfriend Scott Disick as Patrick Bateman, raving about Yeezus to Kim Kardashian friend Jonathan Cheban's captive Paul Allen) has gone from projecting on brick buildings to streaming on West's official website. Check it out in the media gallery above if you haven't already.

Again, try not to focus too hard on the fact that Weird Al and Huey Lewis himself sort of already did that joke this year… and seriously, if Kanye had all this time on his hand, he could've spent it, oh, I don't know, designing an album cover… but check it out above regardless and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Warning: The following video contains some violent imagery and profanity.Scott Disick is a certified "Psycho."Kourtney Kardashian's baby daddy stars in a just-released promo for Kanye West's new album, "Yeezus" -- a video parody of a famous scene from "American Psycho."The original scene showed Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) explaining his love of Huey Lewis and the News' music while preparing to kill Paul Allen (Jared Leto). It's almost totally recreated in the new clip, with Kanye's music replacing Huey's.But even though he sometimes looks and dresses like his character, Disick is no Christian Bale.Let's just say Scott should stick to his day job ... whatever that may be.Check out the video above -- how do you think they did?"Yeezus" is out now. Watch out, Freddie Wong: You've got company in the 'parodying American Psycho' department. Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News, whose music appears in one of American Psycho's most famous scenes, has turned the tables on the postmodern film by starring in a Funny or Die video that remakes the sequence. Lewis stars in the Christian Bale role, with 'Weird Al' Yankovic taking the place of Jared Leto. Just as Bale creepily and scientifically breaks down Lewis' music before chopping Leto to bits, Lewis gives a cold, exhaustive analysis of Bale's acting before savagely murdering Yankovic for "parodying one of my songs." (Yankovic's 'I Want A New Duck' is based off of Lewis' 'I Want A New Drug'.) It's a particularly brilliant video thanks to all its amazing small details. The drug Lewis takes in the scene (echoing a similar action by Bale's Patrick Bateman) is labeled "new drug,...

The actor, who has six children with actress Angelina Jolie, bought the boat after selling a share of his French vineyard at Chateau Miraval to winemaker Mar Perrin.
The 49-year-old actor's friend Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, told him he could offset the cost of buying the 75ft schooner by chartering it out to the well-heeled when he was away filming, the Sun reported.
A source said Pitt always wanted a classic sail yacht and this one is perfect for his as it sleeps eight but you can have more on board if you are just.

Brad Pitt has splashed out on a luxury £5 million yacht. The 'Inglourious Basterds' actor - who has set up home with Angelina Jolie and their six children in the south of France in their vast estate, Château Miraval - brought the boat after selling a share of their French vineyard to famous winemaker Marc Perrin. The couple's wine venture has already proven a huge success after selling out in just five hours and it is believed Brad's friend, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, will help him charter the 75ft yacht out to wealthy individuals while he's away filming. A source told The Sun newspaper: 'Brad's always wanted a classic sail yacht and this one is perfect. It sleeps eight but...

American Psycho
Directed by Mary Harron
Written by Mary Harron & Guinevere Turner (original novel by Bret Easton Ellis)
Us, 2000
Upon release in 1991 and in the intervening years, many words have been spoken of Bret Easton Ellis’ bestselling novel American Psycho; gruesome, disgusting, misogynistic, ultimately un-filmable. Mainly because of its stream of consciousness narrative, hideous sexual violence and highly sexist sinister underscore, Ellis’ offbeat psychological character study of a madman was material apparently inaccessible to the machinations of filmmaking. Much like, it should be noted, Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, and Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club. As was touched upon by Ellen Barkin in a retrospectively amusing twitter war regarding Ellis’s comments on Kathryn Bigelow, an argument could be made that Mary Harron’s 2000 adaptation represented a suitable improvement on his best known work. What initially seemed impossible to bring to the screen,...
