Róisín Murphy is back with her first original music since 2021. The Irish musician has shared her new single “CooCool,” produced by electronic music auteur DJ Koze, marking her first release for Ninja Tune.
Driven by Koze’s peppy beat, “CooCool” is an anthem for when you’ve finally reached the light at the end of a long tunnel: “That ol’ magic’s back/ A warm feeling flooding/ A new age of love/ An incandescent joy,” Murphy coos in the first verse. It’s a little bit jazz lounge-y, a little bit clubby, and very likely to beget some toe tapping.
“[‘CooCool’ is ] ostensibly a fragile little flower yet it has great hidden strength at the roots,” Murphy says about the track in a press release. There’s classic virtuosity and a lightness of touch, while DJ Koze’s hyper-modern production makes it bounce and glide. It’s a stupidly romantic little love poem.

DevilDriver have announced a new album, Dealing with Demons Vol. II, and shared the video for lead single “Through the Depths” ahead of the LP’s May 12th release date.
The album news comes as DevilDriver are set to launch their co-headlining US tour with Cradle of Filth on Wednesday (March 8th) in Tempe, Arizona. The outing runs through March 26th in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with tickets available here.
Hopefully, the new song is a part of DevilDriver’s upcoming setlists. “Through the Depths” is a vicious, black metal-tinged ripper and the first new music from the band since 2020’s Dealing with Demons I — the initial album in the ongoing Dealing with Demons saga. Once again, frontman Dez Fafara’s lyrics are rife with personal reflection and “conversations” between himself and said inner demons.

Thurston Moore has a new album on the way, and he’s offering its first sample today with a massive new single, the seven-minute “Hypnogram.”
We still don’t know the title or release date of the ex-Sonic Youth member’s next solo release. But we do know that he arranged it all last year and it includes guitar, piano, and organ performances from his frequent collaborator James Sedwards. It also features his usual crew of backing musicians, including bassist Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine), percussionist Jem Doulton (Róisín Murphy), and electronic musician Jon Leidecker (Negativland), with lyrics by poet Radieux Radio.
Mixed by London-based producer Margo Broom, “Hypnogram” has the moody, brooding atmosphere you expect from someone like Moore. “I’m closing my eyes to our lucid sleep/ Give me a signal when you find me,” he sings over spellbinding guitars that layer over the track’s gentle keys.

"Wouldn't you rather die than be a Blood Witch?" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a new streaming series titled The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, which is one hell of an appealing title. Fearing he will follow in his father's footsteps, Nathan is closely monitored throughout his childhood. As the boundaries between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ fray, Nathan - along with mischievous Annalise and charismatic Gabriel - will soon discover who he truly is. The series features a score by British pop group Let's Eat Grandma. Starring Jay Lycurgo, Nadia Parkes, and Emilien Vekemans. They're joined by an exciting mixture of new & familiar faces including Isobel Jesper Jones, Paul Ready, David Gyasi, Kerry Fox, Liz White, Karen Connell, Fehinti Balogun,...

The new album from indie-pop band Sports Team opens with a blast of pure euphoria. “Oh yeah, that’s the game,” sings frontman Alex Rice over a rush of student disco guitars. “Life’s hard but I can’t complain.”
Picked apart, the lyrics – from the group’s forthcoming second LP, Gulp! – are revealed to be rather bleak. “The Game”, the outwardly joyous first track, is a laundry of woes confronting Gen Z-ers and millennials in this age of unaffordable housing and gig economy-type zombie jobs. Yet the feeling it communicates is one of exultation and living in the moment.
It isn’t alone in that respect. As the music industry recalibrates after the pandemic, the floodgates have opened on records that revel in catharsis. Chief among them is Beyoncé’s dancefloor epic Renaissance. There is also Rina Sawayama’s Hold The Girl, out this week and featuring shiny-eyed Corrs...

Balenciaga won the couture sweepstakes again this season with an electrifying show stacked with celebrity models including Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa and Selling Sunset star Christine Quinn.
Wednesday’s spectacle should solidify Demna’s reputation as a master of high-low cultural curation — and one of the most exciting thinkers and practitioners in fashion today. The show had a knife-to-the-throat intensity heightened by a throbbing symphonic soundtrack, and face-obscuring RoboCop-esque face shields, developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz racing engineers.
Yet underneath, there was also a lump-in-the-throat emotional tug. Was it the love poem recited in French as the show got underway? The stirring music, amplified by handbag-shaped boomboxes toted by some models? Or simply the visceral beauty of Demna’s voluptuous tailoring and killer dressmaking?

Catherine Tate has given some more information on the upcoming nan specials and has also hinted at a possible live tour for her foul-mouthed character.
The comedian reveals on Alan Carr Chatty Man that Warwick Davis will appear in one of the two half-hour specials she has planned.
"She is going to be on telly, I think around Christmas time," Tate says. "I've done two specials. In one of them I had Warwick Davis. Oh my god it was so joyful.
"It was so joyful cause when he walked on the set and Nan saw him the audience were thinking 'Oh what is going to go on here' but he has the upper hand and it was such a joy to work with him."

It’s been a strange season of The Voice — and not just because of Gwen Stefani’s penchant for pairing torturous heels with tights.
But despite the almost constant shift in contestant momentum and often head-scratching results (Damien over Toia Jones in the Knockouts? Ryan Sill in the Top 8?), something kind of miraculous occurred during tonight’s performance finale: NBC’s reality singing behemoth finally took on its most obvious shortcoming — that it’s never produced an American Idol-level superstar — and did something that may very well obliterate all those “what’s the point of all this, anyway?” criticisms.

The transition for many teens from acting out in their adolescent ways to maturing into a responsible adult is the emotional motivation and conflict in the new drama, What Richard Did. Based on the award-winning book Bad Day in Blackrock by Kevin Powers, the Lenny Abrahamson-helmed film adaptation is a devastating study of how teenagers confront who they think they were and who they ultimately prove to be. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the coming-of-age film, led by Transformers 4 star Jack Reynor in the title role, is a detailed portrait of the consequences teenagers must learn to take responsibility for.
What Richard Did follows the privileged title teen character, Richard Karsen, as he lives in a world where everything seems possible. The rich Dublin rugby star’s pre-college summer, which is filled with access to his family’s beach house and cars, changes when he sets his...

Les Misérables (12A)
(Tom Hooper, 2012, UK) Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne. 158 mins
The King's Speech director plus the globally adored musical: it's a match made in commercial heaven, a third-hand version of a 19th-century French saga, and the most epic celebrity karaoke session ever filmed. The fact that it's entirely sung, "live" on set, supposedly communicates more "emotion", but this is already oversaturated with so much melodramatic incident, the effect is numbing.
Gangster Squad (15)

Brolin's under-the-radar police squad guns for Penn's La mobsters in this exuberantly violent, but disappointingly straightforward 1940s thriller, derived more from modern videogames than vintage film noirs. Action definitely speaks louder than words here.

Brolin's under-the-radar police squad guns for Penn's La mobsters in this exuberantly violent, but disappointingly straightforward 1940s thriller, derived more from modern videogames than vintage film noirs. Action definitely speaks louder than words here.

Lenny Abrahamson continues his exploration of contemporary Irish hardship with his third feature, What Richard Did, a disturbing, tightly-knit drama which fires off in unexpected directions, but is at all times perfectly wrought, at once delivering white-knuckle suspense and searing emotional resonance.
Our first sight in the film is of Richard (Jack Reynor) and his mates, who are at the tail-end of their summer holidays, and fancifully enjoying life. The authentic dialogue, as the guys dick around telling stories doesn’t merely get points for realism; it’s also bracingly funny, too. The naturalism of the performances is perhaps no better realised than when we meet Richard’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, Lara (Roisin Murphy); Murphy and Reynor’s palpable chemistry, and their inherent, glowing appeal, makes them a fun pair to watch, even as things slowly but surely begin to get uncomfortable.

“What Richard Did” follows a role-model athlete into a party, and after a violent drunken spasm of jealousy, a rugby teammate is dead. Director Lenny Abrahamson’s second feature shifts from a light airy palette on the beaches near Wicklow to darkening tones as his story devolves from jostling bonhomie into death and guilt. Newcomer Jack Reynor is Richard Karlsen, a team leader who can’t contain his surging emotions when there’s competition for dark-haired Lara (Roisin Murphy). After a brawl goes too far and the police investigate, omerta sets in among the mates who witnessed the fight, putting a few new wrinkles in the age-old theme of Irish guilt. Reynor, who just signed with Wme, played the role of Richard when he was 19, the same age as his character. He and Abrahamson plumb the dark side of a bright, popular kid who seemed destined for success. Dp David Grennan...

Jealousy could be the most destructive force in youth culture. With hormones raging to drive a need for companionship to help prevail through high school and ready for the next step in life, the power lust, love, convenience, or whatever it is that takes the wheel possesses is never easily overcome. The darkness of anger boiling over when someone incapable of understanding the intricacies of life will take over and cause actions completely out of character from the role model, compassionate soul you have begun to believe you are since everyone else says it. However, if you find yourself relishing with a psychological pat on the back for vengeance served the moment when all reason escapes to leave an acutely devastating capacity for violence, the question becomes whether the monster unleashed is in fact who you’ve been the entire time.
