Discovering the true emotional motivations of captivating characters, and how they relate to the other anti-heroes and troubled protagonists in a story, can be an exciting and captivating experience for actors to explore. Versatile and enchanting actress Julie McNiven powerfully explores the passionate depths of her characters’ complex relationships, which she previously began to do in the horror genre her recurring role as fallen angel, Anna Milton, in 2008 on the hit series, ‘Supernatural.’ The performer also naturally embraced how her character related to the troubled characters around her in her new independent found footage horror movie, ‘The Possession of Michael King,’ the first feature film from writer-director David Jung. The Possession of Michael King is definitely a different kind of film. Yes, it is "found footage," and yes, it is also a possession film, but it is also more than the sum of its parts.
This is a film that wants to take you on a dark journey that start with the sun setting on a life and never really rising again. It wants the viewer to confront their thoughts on what lies beyond and it doesn't pull any punches. (Read my review here.)
Shock Till You Drop recently spoke with writer/director David Jung about the film. His thoughts behind it, what it takes to summon a demon, and what he hopes you'll take with you when you leave the theater.

Chicago – The problem with most horror films is that they don’t understand what really scares us, and substitute bloody messes or the jack-in-the-box “boo!” instead of what really gets under our skins. “The Possession of Michael King” is a rare and special exception, taking demonic possession to broad depths of psychological and religious symbolism.

Cast: Shane Johnson, Ella Anderson, Julie McNiven
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Release Date: August 22, 2014 (Chicago)
Plot: After his wife is killed, a husband and father (Johnson) films himself trying to summon a demon to prove whether spirits are or aren’t real.

The Possession of Michael King begins with a dead-horse stance, raging against the scam of fortune tellers. This thesis is simultaneously groan-worthy and emblematic foreshadowing of this juvenile horror film’s whiny angst, in which a man deduces that the fulfillment of his late wife’s tarot reading means that he must investigate the existence of spirits.
But instead of venturing as to whether heaven is fo’ real, or seeing...

Shane Johnson is highly effective in the title role of The Possession of Michael King. Now the man behind the camera and the story speaks out about the movie. Director David Jung sat down with Dread Central to discuss The Possession of Michael King.
Jung began by discussing his inspiration for writing the story, which he co-penned with Tedi Sarafian. "The Shining played a very important role," Jung said. "I wanted to do a movie from the Pov of Jack Torrance, the character Jack Nicholson played."
He explained, "I felt like no one had done that before, had the main character in the film be the one that’s slowly going mad, and documenting and talking about the process in an almost scientific way as it's happening. I love movies about transformation, especially horror films. David Cronenberg’s The Fly is one of my all-time favorite films."

Sneak Peek restricted footage from director David Jung's horror feature "The Possession of Michael King", available August 26, 2014 on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand from Anchor Bay Entertainment, starring Shane Johnson, Dale Dickey, Tomas Arana and Julie McNiven:
"...following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker 'Michael King' decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural.
"Michael decides to make himself the center of the experiment - allowing demonologists, necromancers and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him - in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth.
"But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go..."

Eddie Murphy famously asked, "Why don't white people leave the house when there's a ghost?" It's a testament to director David Jung's smart script and Shane Johnson's performance that Michael King's decisions seem largely free of horror-movie logic — the stubborn refusal to acknowledge danger, an insistence on going it alone. Lost in grief, the widowed documentarian King throws himself into an exploration of black magic, wanting to prove that all spirituality is bunk. Johnson tilts at this windmill with conviction, underplaying the desperation that such tilting reveals. King's tour of unsavory mystics includes a dying priest confessing that exorcisms are real, a funeral director who practices necromancy, and a Satanist couple, more sleazy than spooky. But when he begins behaving s...

You can’t fling a dead crow in a Best Buy these days without hitting some type of “found footage” possession movie, ever since the overnight success of Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity, and while most of these low-budget wannabes fail miserably in replicating true paranormal horror, a select few shining examples make all the underwhelming watches worthwhile. Well, Ok, almost worthwhile – have you ever seen Paranormal Entity for the love of Pete?!
David Jung’s The Possession Of Michael King happens to be one of those under-the-radar examples of truly unnerving demonic horror, mixing ample doses of religious slighting and Satanic ball-busting in a way that actually becomes horrific instead of brutishly fratty. I found myself involved in the story of Michael King (played by Shane Johnson), an unfortunate man who embarks on an ill-advised journey to prove that there are no greater powers above, below, or around us.

The possession sub-genre of horror is a tough sell lately, but actor Shane Johnson dove into the title role of The Possession of Michael King in a big way. He recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about his approach to the part and his feelings about the film.
Although he often reads scripts from the horror genre, Johnson was immediately drawn to this movie and the character of Michael King. "The thing that attracted me to this piece in particular is that it really spoke to me," Johnson said.
He added, "I could really relate to this character. He starts off having a traumatic experience in his life and that sort of propels him into questioning. Questioning life, questioning the afterlife, questioning things. The thing I liked about it is you get to see all angles of it from his perspective. You get to see a full hero's...

People with the name “Michael King” may well find themselves asking “Wait, what the Hell is going on now?” when the new horror film The Possession of Michael King is released in August. As it happens, that would be an entirely appropriate question to raise.
Directed by David Jung, the film stars Shane Johnson as the titular character, a documentary filmmaker who, following the death of his wife, decides to make a film about the search for proof that the supernatural exists. Do things go horribly wrong? Judging by the real-life film’s rather harrowing trailer, we’d have to say,...

It’s difficult to be scared of what you don’t believe in. Michael King, a documentary filmmaker whose wife has just died, has no belief in an afterlife and thus feels no fear when it comes to exploring the supernatural. He’s all too willing to tempt dark paranormal forces during the making of his latest film, and he’ll learn the hard way that supernatural forces not only exist, but are capable of great evil.
Anchor Bay Films’ upcoming horror movie The Possession of Michael King will be adding some paranormal scares to the summer.

Anchor Bay Films is hard at work in France, having just acquired the rights to the David Jung-directed The Possession of Michael King at Cannes. The feature directorial debut of Jung, the thriller follows a widower who delves into the occult following the death of his wife.
Starring Dale Dickey, Tomas Arana, Ella Anderson, and Julie McNiven, the Gold Circle Films production is yet another film that seeks to keep the “possession” sub-genre alive and well.
Evp of Acquisitions Kevin Kasha has clearly noticed their popularity, stating “Audiences love possession films, and this one is filled with all the thrills they’re known for.”
This, of course, says nothing about the incredibly common and increasingly frustrating ”The Haunting/Possession of…” trend, but personal quibbles aside, it’s always great to see horror represented and making headway at Cannes.
