There was a time when it was generally perceived that iconic heroic fantasy characters such as The Lone Ranger, The Green Hornet, The Shadow and Buck Rogers were so popular for so long that they would be around forever. I think of that whenever somebody alleges Superman and Spider-Man will be around forever. Times change, as do our cultural predilections and venues.
Nonetheless, those heroes have become part of our cultural fabric. Most Americans (at least) who have neither read, seen, nor heard the adventures of these characters have heard their names and have some vague idea of their modus operandi. Just as DC Entertainment has kept Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman “alive” through their comic books while merchandisers and movie producers such as Michael Uslan could enhance their visibility through their more profitable endeavors.

James Badge Dale plays the hero in The Lone Ranger. He’s Dan Reid, a Texas Ranger with scruffy facial hair and pained sky-blue eyes. He’s soft-spoken but quick with a one-liner, half jocky frat-boy and half wounded warrior. He makes fun of his little brother but clearly loves his little brother, and when he sets off on his third or fourth dangerous mission of the day, he says goodbye to his wife and child with a mixture of apology (because he’s a man who can’t help how much he likes his dangerous job) and tremendous care...

The masked man who rides in on a white horse to serve out heaping portions of red-hot justice is a mythic character who's been around since the days of radio stories but his brother is decidedly less well-known. Until now.
To hear James Badge Dale talk about his character Dan Reid, whom he describes as the "older, dirtier, sexier, moustached brother" to Armie Hammer's John Reid (aka The Lone Ranger), he seems like a guy whose reputation should be equally mythic. And in director Gore Verbinski's take, we are invited to see how the siblings somewhat contentious relationship actually plays a major part in making a hero out of John.
Badge Dale recently touched down in Toronto to talk about The Lone Ranger, his time at cowboy bootcamp, why this movie may be Verbinski's masterpiece and what it was like playing the big brother.

In "The Lone Ranger," Johnny Depp reunites with his "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski for another Jerry Bruckheimer-produced, Disney-distributed period action adventure. Based not on a theme-park ride but on the popular film serials and television show, "The Lone Ranger" is now a definitively more progressive tale where Tonto isn't just a minstrel sidekick -- it's the Lone Ranger, played by Armie Hammer, who takes the back of the saddle -- and the villains are greedy railroad tycoons (Tom Wilkinson). Although there's no language (aside from the term "Injun") or sex, the violence is considerably more gruesome (cannibalism, vague references to rape) than expected.
Here are five questions to ask yourself before heading to see "The Lone Ranger" this summer.
1. Is your kid familiar with "The Lone Ranger"? If you were to play Rossini's "William Tell Overture," would your kid instinctively think "Hi-Yo Silver, away!"? If so,...

The Summer is at the halfway mark so it’s time for another all-media icon to storm (or in this case, gallop) into the multiplexes. “An all-media icon ?”, you may ask. Well that’s a character or series that premiered in one media outlet and then became a hit in all the other outlets. The case could be made for the Enterprise crew of “Star Trek”, although they arrived after the end of dramatic series radio (but they inspired a whole lot of internet content). The second installment of the reboot from Jj Abrams, Star Trek: Into Darkness, was a box office hit in May (and is still on the B.O. top ten list). But there’s no argument that the all-media crown can be bestowed on Superman, subject of the big June release Man Of Steel. The character ,who was introduced in comic books, “Action Comics” #1 back in 1938 (yup,...

James Badge Dale has one of those faces; you know you've seen him somewhere, but can't quite place it. I remembered him from the 1990 version of "Lord of the Flies," in which he played the quiet Simon (he was only 10 years old!). But this summer, you can see him in "The Lone Ranger" as well as "Iron Man 3" and "World War Z."
While his characters may not be huge roles, they'll all integral to the stories being told. In "The Lone Ranger," he plays Sheriff Dan Reid, brother to the eventual Lone Ranger (played by Armie Hammer). With a grizzly mustache and a two-gun belt, it's clear that Dale relishes this role.
Moviefone sat down with Dale to talk about his turn as one of the good guys in "The Lone Ranger," his horseback riding skills, and what it's like to wear that bad-ass sheriff outfit.

The Trans-Continental Railroad that serves to unite the East and West costs of the United States will conjoin in Colbie, Texas, and it's up to Dan Reid (James Badge Dale) along with his hardened band of Texas Rangers to maintain the peace between locals and the Comanche Indians while it's built. Dan's younger brother John (Armie Hammer) left his family and childhood sweetheart Rebecca (Ruth Wilson) to travel east and go to law school. He wants to devote his life to upholding the law, but chooses to shun violence -- believing in the civilized progress of the justice system. Dan understands that most times the law in Colbie can only be doled out through the barrel of a gun. While on the train ride home where he plans to take the position of district attorney, John is caught in the middle of...

James Badge Dale. You may not know him by name, but you’re probably familiar with his face. Appearing in shows like 24, Rubicon and The Pacific, and films like Flight, The Grey and Shame, has given the actor an impressive career thus far. Now, with the Summer of 2013 upon us, James Badge Dale is about to gain a whole lot more exposure as he has already appeared in two major blockbusters (Iron Man 3 and World War Z) and has one more on the horizon: The Lone Ranger.
In his upcoming film, James Badge Dale plays Dan Reid, the brother of the titular ranger. Though it’s more of a supporting part, Dale brings his always reliable acting chops to the table and turns in a strong performance, one that helps him to stand out in a star studded cast that includes Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

If you're wondering how to celebrate your 4th of July weekend both patriotically and cinematically, "The Lone Ranger" should fit the bill. The patriotism comes from its source material, the TV show with an American hero that still remains an icon years after he rode into the sunset and the big screen spectacle is due thanks to Gore Verbinski, who throws every dollar he got into the movie. The result? Well, you'll have to wait to hear our full verdict just yet, so until then, here's a couple of clips. The bit you'll about to see is a bit spoilery, showing the final moment of the massive train sequence which opens the movie, so perhaps you'll want to skip that one. Meanwhile, we get a more serious moment when our hero John Reid, still mourning the death of his brother Dan Reid, is first given the trademark mask by his future sidekick Tonto.

Toyfair 2013 is currently taking place in in London’s Olympia, and we were there to check all all that was on offer – including the latest offerings from the folks at Lego, who had the very latest releases on show and some that aren’t due for release until later this year. Sadly we weren’t allowed to take pictures on Lego’s stand, but I did manage to scribble down some notes – especially regarding the next wave of movie tie-in sets such as The Lone Ranger, Man of Steel and Iron Man 3.
The minifigures for all of the new superhero sets were kept firmly under wraps, however there were some clues to be found on the display stands and on the mock-up packaging Lego had on display. Here’s what I know:
Iron Man 3
Three new Lego sets will be available to coincide with the films release, set numbers are 76006, 76007 and 76008. Set No.

"Iron Man 3" will have three villains at the center of its story. There will be Ben Kingsley's The Mandarin, Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian and James Badge Dale's Eric Savin -- aka "Coldblood" -- but Dale doesn't think that's too many bad guys for one movie.
"Ben Kingsley is the mouthpiece. Guy Pearce is the brain. I'm the muscle," Dale admitted to ShowBiz411. "Being in a big CGI action movie is a weird departure for me."
This isn't the only big budget movie Dale has coming up. In addition to playing Eric Savin, he's also got a role in "World War Z" and will portray Dan Reid in the upcoming "The Lone Ranger." Dale had previously been best known for his work on TV shows like "Rubicon" and "The Pacific," so he said that this type of filmmaking is all new to him.
