When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.
Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.
For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

Cosmic horror operates on a specific, dread-inducing feel of human insignificance in the face of a vast, unknowable threat. Its characters slowly discover how meager their place in the universe is when faced with horrors beyond their reality. Our world is merely a tiny blip in the cosmos, after all.
Robbie Banfitch takes found footage to immersive cosmic horror highs in The Outwaters, releasing in limited theaters on February 9, 2023 from Bloody Disgusting and Cinedigm. In anticipation, this week’s streaming picks capture the unquantifiable terror of cosmic horror.

“Banshee Chapter” exemplifies the phrase “Still Waters Run Deep”. The poster art lends to either some “Hellraiser” action with some skinned twisted Epicureans or it’s some sort of anatomical horror indie flick. I dunno. After writing a good many reviews by now, I always notice patterns about the things that I mention repeatedly. I realized that I’m a sucker for good poster art. That all too critical first impression that hooks you. “Banshee Chapter” ended up being nothing of what I thought it would be.

Facebook’s Oculus Rift is getting its first 3D virtual reality feature film in Banshee Chapter, an indie sci-fi horror executive produced by Star Trek‘s Zachary Quinto that’s hitting the next-gen virtual reality platform today – for free.
The low budget frightener, loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft’s From Beyond, tracks a journalist investigating the disappearance of her old college friend and his ties to a secret experimental drug. Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Levine, Sleepy Hollow‘s Katia Winter and True Blood‘s Michael McMillian star for first time director Blair Erickson in the film produced by Sunchaser Entertainment’s Stephanie Riggs and Before the Door’s Corey Moosa and Sean Akers, and Christian Arnold-Beutel.
Banshee Chapter debuted last December on VOD to modest fanfare. But that was before Facebook bought Oculus Rift in a $2 billion deal, heralding it as the next big thing in social communications and entertainment.

The Banshee Chapter follows journalist, Anna (Winter) who is investigating the disappearance of her friend James (McMillan). James has been experimenting with strange drugs that the Us military used in real life experiments in the 1960s. These experiments had very weird and sinister results, of course, so as Anna goes about her investigation, weird and sinister things begin to happen to her too. I really liked this. It’s got quite a bit going on, including but not limited to archival footage both fictional and real, strange referencing of real life cultural figures and Lovecraftian horrors from beyond the veil. As such, it was a little unpredictable, which I liked.
Whilst we know what beats and tropes to expect from a film involving zombies or creepy children or vampires, there isn’t really an established dialogue for...

Spring Breakers (2013)
Harmony Korine’s critical darling from last year is likely to be talked about and discussed for a good long while yet. Holding up an uncomfortable mirror to our youth, Spring Breakers works on a lot of levels not only does it work as a surface level tale of four out of control girls on a debauched trip in Florida but it also works as a story about the spiritual death and rebirth of Generation Y and asks some important questions about how post war culture evolved into something where our youth think licking power tools in music videos is something to aspire to.
There is a scene fairly early on where the two most rebellious of our heroines sit in class discussing oral sex on paper as their tutor drones on about world war two,...

Title: The Banshee Chapter Director: Blair Erickson Starring: Ted Levine (‘The Silence of the Lambs’), Katia Winter (‘Sleepy Hollow’) and Michael McMillian (‘True Blood’) The most daring, curious people often set out to expose the truth in long-standing mysteries, as they yearn to solve conflicts and bring closure to long debated ambiguities. This is certainly the case for the main character, Anne Roland, in the new independent horror thriller, ‘The Banshee Chapter,’ which is now available on VOD and opens in select theaters on January 10. First-time feature filmmaker Blair Erickson, who both wrote and directed the movie, created a determined protagonist, played by Katia Winter, who will stop at [ Read More ]

The film The Banshee Chapter directed and cowritten by newcomer Blair Erickson with a story written by equally unknown Daniel J. Healy uses the foundation of historical facts surrounding 1950s CIA project MKUltra as the jumping off point of The Banshee Chapter distributed by XLrator Media (also responsible for such films as Bigfoot The Lost Coast Tapes (2012) Under the Bed (2013) and American Mary (2013). XLrator has a penchant for off the wall horror films and thrillers and The Banshee Chapter is no exception. Kudos to the talent scouts at XLrator as they seem to have a pretty good eye.

For me personally, it just hasn’t been a great year for independent American horror. That’s why it’s refreshing to end 2013 on a fairly high note with a film like Banshee Chapter. Based on actual testimony and uncovered documents, the story is based on the Mk-ultra experiments conducted in the Sixties on people like Ken Kesey.
So, in theory, we can all probably blame the CIA for the invention of tie-dye.
It’s always encouraging to see a first-time director deliver, and Blair Erickson has done exactly that. Hear what he has to say about the film below.
Dread Central: I enjoyed the film and it’s nice when I don’t have to go back to old classics all the time to get my horror fix.
Blair Erickson: I know what you mean. A lot of times you feel like everything is just stale and repetitive...

The new horror movie Banshee Chapter is full of familiar faces, including Katia Winter (Sleepy Hollow), Michael McMillian (True Blood), and the great Ted Levine (Silence of the Lambs, Monk). But the biggest name attached to this tale of psychedelic drug use and threatening, extra-dimensional presences is its executive producer Zachary Quinto, whose production company Before the Door — which he cofounded with Corey Moosa and Neal Dodson — was responsible for overseeing the film.
Below, Quinto talks about his involvement with Banshee Chapter which is now available on VOD and will start a theatrical run in select cities on Jan. 10. And,...

There’s nothing like a good scare to get the blood flowing, am I right horror fans? While a film’s story keeps us engaged, its ability to scare us silly is what keeps us on our toes, covered in a blanket, and clinging to the closest arm. Now, there are a few ways to go about spooking viewers – and not all work. Anybody can orchestrate a jump scare, which makes them sometimes more frustrating than enjoyable, but to string together a chain of pure, atmospherically beneficial jump scares, that’s where excitement comes into play. As a horror fan who hates cheap scares and lame tactics that undoubtedly jolt viewers anyway, I’ve got to hand it to first time writer/director Blair Erickson on his first feature The Banshee Chapter, a supernatural thriller that almost gave me a damn heart attack.

Star Trek and American Horror Story's Zachary Quinto got behind a horror film that's arriving in January 2014 called The Banshee Chapter. Quinto produced for director Blair Erickson.
The film centers on a young, female journalist (Katia Winder) who follows the mysterious trail of a missing friend (Michael McMillian) that had been experimenting with mind-altering chemicals developed in secret government drug tests. Levine plays the role of a rogue counter-culture novelist with a penchant for substance abuse and firearms who leads the journalist into the mystery of dangerous chemical research. A fast-paced blend of fact and fiction, the film is based on real documents, actual test subject testimony, and uncovered secrets about covert programs run by the CIA.

The fifth and final day of Frightfest mercifully began a little later than the preceding days, a boon to many now slightly flagging and delirious film fans. Unfortunately, the first film on the main screen was the single worst feature I caught at the festival. Dark Touch (Marina De Van) features a French crew and an Irish cast and one wonders if something drastic was lost in translation. It’s the story of an eleven year old girl called Niamh (Marie Missy Keating) whose parents and baby brother are killed when household objects seemingly begin to attack them of their own accord. She goes to live with family friends but the mysterious occurrences start to happen again.
It’s apparently a film about child abuse but it misjudges its take on this very difficult subject so badly, it’s borderline offensive. It’s also just stupid. If I were...

This is a serious little casting break that follows either movies with serious intent (there's one below about 'unwitting incest,' which I hope isn't a comedy) or serious filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt. So, after the break, you'll find: Juliette Lewis stars in the 'unwitting incest' movie Blood or Water, Ted Levin is in an indie inspired by secret CIA programs, and Peter Sarsgaard is going to be in Kelly Reichardt's new film, Night Moves. We don't have a lot of info about Blood or Water, which Justin Molotnikov will direct, but Juliette Lewis has just signed to play the lead role in the Danish/Scottish co-production. It will shoot in Spring 2012 in Scotland, with Stephen McCole, Greta Scacchi, Kate Dickie and Gary Lewis taking other roles. The director's first feature, Crying With Laughter, won best film in the Scottish BAFTAs in 2009. The basic plot description of Blood or...
