David Adjmi’s Stereophonic was named Best Play of the year by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle today, with the Best Musical Award going to the Off Broadway production of Dead Outlaw from the team behind The Band’s Visit.
Stereophonic, currently on Broadway, has received 13 Tony Award nominations, and includes songs written by Will Butler from the indie rock band Arcade Fire. The play tells the story of a fractious 1970s Fleetwood Mac-like rock band recording what will be a massive Rumours-like hit record.
Dead Outlaw, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna and a book by Itamar Moses, is inspired by the life of Elmer McCurdy. The musical, which premiered this year at the Minetta Lane Theatre, was originally conceived by Yazbek and tells the story of an outlaw from the early 20th Century whose corpse became a traveling sideshow exhibit for decades.

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Exclusive: The strange, true-life story of Elmer McCurdy, a turn-of-the-20th Century train robber whose corpse became a carnival attraction and unwitting stage prop well into the 1970s, will be adapted into a musical by the writers of Broadway’s acclaimed The Band’s Visit.
The new theater piece, titled Dead Outlaw, will feature music and lyrics by David Yazbek and Erik Della Penna, with a book by Itamar Moses. The project marks the first reteaming of Yasbek and Moses since their multiple-Tony-winning The Band’s Visit, which made its Broadway debut in 2017.
Yazbek and Della Penna have composed 14-songs for Dead Outlaw, and a premiere presentation is scheduled for March 14 at the Manhattan venue 54 Below.

Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. The list includes several high-profile scribes including John Oliver, David Simon, Warren Leight, Tom Fontana, Eric Overmyer and Jesse Armstrong.
Read the petition and its signatories below.
Editorial staffers at Vice overwhelmingly ratified their first contract with WGA East in April 2016, a three-year deal that was retroactive to January 1 that year.

Presenting Oscar's Chosen Supporting Actresses of the Films of 1994.
The Nominees: The Academy wrapped up their love affair with a previous winner (Dianne Wiest) while starting a new one with a future winner (Helen Mirren). Two fresh-faced delights and an esteemed veteran (Rosemary Harris) were along for the ride.
In a rare turn of events the shortlist leaned far away from tears and dove headfirst into stylized fun or outright belly laughs (Rosemary Harris was the only player in a traditional drama). A quick list of the roles sounds like a joke set-up or at least a wild party: A fertile queen, a pompous diva, a wealthy society matriarch, and not but one but two trouble-maker gangster molls who moonlight in acting.

The 72nd edition of the Tony Awards has concluded. While this continues to be one of the best produced award shows on television, some aspects of this year’s presentation were better than others. So sit back and enjoy my take on the good, bad and ugly of this year’s Tony Awards (and check out the complete list of winners here).
The Good
The Tony Awards have the best acceptance speeches of any ceremony on television. The gracious nature of so many of the winners is always a highlight, and this year brought several new favorites to the forefront:
Ari’el Stachel delivered a heartfelt tribute to his parents and his heritage when he claimed his trophy. He admitted that in the past he avoided events with them and pretended not to be of Middle Eastern descent. But now he celebrated his cast, “who never believed that they would...

Ah, how young and foolish we were. It seems like it was just two days ago that Variety — and the rest of the Broadway community — were all so very sure of Tony predictions. But nope: The ceremony for the 2018 Tony Awards gave us plenty of surprises to chatter about after the show.
Surprise: A sweep for “The Band’s Visit”
Sure, we all knew “Band’s Visit” would win the big prize for new musical, plus a few more trophies in categories like actress (Katrina Lenk) and score (David Yazbek), but most observers were thinking the show — a quiet, intimate tale set in a tiny Israeli town — was too small and artsy to make it a clean sweep of it. It wasn’t: “Band’s Visit” won a whopping 10 Tonys (all but one of the 11 for which it was nominated), including book of a musical (Itamar Moses) and actor (Tony Shalhoub...

“The Band’s Visit,” “Angels in America,” and “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” emerged big winners at the 72nd Tony Awards, a celebration of Broadway’s best that would have made Antoinette Perry, the theater awards’ namesake, proud. Hosted by Tony nominees Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall June 10, the ceremony ended by crowning Itamar Moses and David Yazbek’s “The Band’s Visit” the best new musical of the 2017–18 season. Hey Tri-state area readers! Only a few of you have come out to Show-Score's Stage & Screen events this spring that I've been moderating. Here's one last opportunity for you.
I'll be interviewing Tony-nominated director David Cromer and Tony-nominated Book writer Itamar Moses of "The Band's Visit" this Sunday at 3:00 Pm just before a screening of the movie that inspired the Tony nominated musical. We'll be talking about translating the film for the stage and then we'll all watch the film!
If you've never seen the Israeli film The Band's Visit (2007), you really must. It's quite charming and it stars the late great Ronit Elkabetz (of Late Marriage and Gett fame) and was a sleeper hit at Us arthouses in 2008. It also won 8 Ophirs (the Israeli Oscar) in its year including Best Actress. You can get tickets here.

Do you know Chet Baker? Among its other achievements, Broadway’s acclaimed musical The Band’s Visit has handed the theater community its best pick-up line in ages. Repeated with faux-debonnaire panache and minor variations to great comic effect by actor Ari’el Stachel in the supporting role of Haled, the self-styled ladies man and trumpet player in the tale’s Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra, the show’s unplanned catchphrase – equal parts earnestness and desperation – neatly encapsulates the soulful mash-up of cultures that gives The Band’s Visit, written by David Yabek and Itamar Moses and directed by David Cromer, so much of its appeal.
That message of cultural understanding isn’t lost on Stachel, who talks in this Q&A about his years of hiding his Middle Eastern heritage from even his closest friends and schoolmates. The 26-year-old actor, who’d done a couple small roles on CBS’ Blue Bloods...

While spring is revered as the time to debut a Broadway show, the fall is not devoid of openings. This fall, in particular, saw the curtain rise on a robust number of plays and musicals, including front-runners in several Tony acting categories, as well as the coveted best musical prize. While the Tony Awards are not for another six months (June 10, to be exact), here’s the state of the race as it stands now. Musicals “The Band’s Visit” Not since “Hamilton” has a musical received such universally rapturous praise, and there’s no arguing that this critical darling, with its Middle Eastern–influenced score and impactfully slow-burning storyline, is the one to beat. Composer David Yazbek, too, seems a lock to finally get his due with a Tony win for his tour de force score. Essentially guaranteed nominations and plausible wins are also in store for book writer...

He solved murder cases on Monk. Now, for the first time, veteran actor Tony Shalhoub is taking a stab at musical theater. Call it a birthday gift -- to himself.
“It’s a little terrifying. Having not done a musical before, it’s kind of uncharted waters for me,” says Shalhoub, who turns 64 on Oct. 9, two days after The Band’s Visit starts preview performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. Despite appearing on Broadway last season as Walter Franz in Arthur Miller’s The Price and earning Tony nominations for Golden Boy and Conversations With My Father, this is the first time the actor will be singing onstage. Based on the 2007 film, the show originally premiered Off- Broadway to sold-out audiences last year “without any knowledge or guarantee it was going to move [to Broadway].
