Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales has signed an international sales deal for the upcoming Belgian debut “Julie Keeps Quiet” by Leonardo Van Dijl, whose short film “Stephanie,” also repped by New Europe, played in Cannes competition in 2020.

In “Julie Keeps Quiet,” when the practices of a prominent tennis coach are investigated, attention quickly shifts to Julie, a young and promising player who is always around him. “Mister 8” is backed by Finnish SVOD operator Elisa Viihde, “The Allegation” by Germany’s Rtl Group, which is currently in the throes of a high-end scripted drama revolution as it preps its lineup for its relaunched SVOD service, now called Rtl Plus, which goes live on Nov. 4.
Sold by France’s Federation Entertainment and co-written by director Nikki and producer Pösö, Canneseries best series winner “Mister 8” was described to Variety by Nikki as “a thriller with a comedy plot.”

Wild Bunch TV-sold “Albatros,” Turner Latin America’s banner title “Amarres” and REInvent Studios’ globe-trotting “Peacemaker” will feature at a 54 series-strong Buyers Showcase, which launches today March 25 as a backbone of Series Mania’s online Digital Forum, Europe’s first big festival experiment in a virtual marketplace.
Also featuring a powerful Co-Pro Pitching lineup, packed by pedigree producers and creatives, the Digital Forum’s industry audience, such as the number of accredited distributors, still has to be confirmed.
Some high-profile titles are missing: Opener “The Luminaries,” for example, from Fremantle and Working Title, and HBO closer “Run.” That said, the Buyer’s Showcase looks set to include five of Series Mania’s original 10 main competition entries and 13 of its 15 International Panorama titles, the festival’s two main sections.

This War Of The Worlds review contains spoilers.
War of the Worlds Episodes 1 and 2
No ‘The’. That’s how to distinguish this TV version of H.G. Wells’ alien invasion classic from the one that aired late last year. That was The War Of The Worlds, this one’s just War Of The Worlds – no definite article, more casual, more approachable, more modern.
Of course, as a French-us co-production, they might have gone with La War Of The Worlds, but that would just have been silly.
There is nothing silly about this opening double-bill. It’s deathly serious, a paranoid invasion thriller that rivals even the Six O’Clock news in its evocation of dread. It’s so sombre, in fact, that watching it is almost a relief, given our current situation. To finally see the world fall apart and any semblance of normality poof into the air as people...

Sneak Peek the new TV series, adapting H.G. "...when astronomers detect a transmission from another galaxy, it is definitive proof of intelligent extraterrestrial life. The world's population waits for further contact with bated breath.
"They do not have to wait long. Within days, mankind is all but wiped out. Just pockets of humanity are left in an eerily deserted world.
"As alien ships appear in the sky, the survivors ask a burning question – who are these attackers and why are they hell-bent on our destruction?
"This is a story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances but they are more than just victims in a brutal war.

“To carry a secret is a great thing,” says Gabriel Byrne, reflecting on his latest role. “You never have to show the secret, because the audience knows it… and they’ll do the work for you in that situation.”
The actor was doing press rounds for a new, and very loose adaptation of “War of the Worlds,” from Urban Myth, Canal Plus, Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa, Agc Television, and Studiocanal – a powerful combination – which updates H.G. Wells’ alien invasion novel by grounding the story in the here-and-now and by focusing more on character than on spectacle.
Functioning instead as a survival thriller set in both England and France, the eight-episode series follows a diverse group living in the aftermath of a cataclysmic attack that has wiped out most life on Earth.

The BBC has dropped a trailer for its upcoming adaptation of H.G. Wells’ alien-invasion classic, “The War of the Worlds.”
Set in Edwardian England, in the southern English county of Surrey, the three-part series stars Rafe Spall (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingfom”), Eleanor Tomlinson (“Poldark”), Rupert Graves (“Sherlock”) and Robert Carlyle (“The Full Monty”) as earthlings caught up in the panic after a meteor bearing extermination-minded aliens lands in the usually placid British countryside. Craig Viveiros directs.
The series will be broadcast on flagship channel BBC One this fall. ITV Studios has sold the show to major European countries and more than 50 African territories.
Spall plays George, a man who escapes his failing marriage to begin a new life with Amy (Tomlinson), despite societal disapproval. Graves plays George’s brother and Carlyle an astronomer.

Thanks to Variety and Studio Canal, we have our first look at the upcoming series adaptation of H.G. Wells’s classic sci-fi novel War of the Worlds.
This latest adaptation is an eight-part series set in modern-day Europe, and it will “follow the pockets of humanity left on earth following an apocalyptic extra-terrestrial strike.”
The series stars Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern. They lead an ensemble cast which includes Léa Drucker, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar Jones, Stéphane Caillard, Adel Bencherif, and Guillaume Gouix. Bryne had this to say in a statement regarding the series:
“In literature, dystopian novels and science fiction has been a safe place for us to deal with collective terror. But what Wells also understood is that the greatest threat is not from out there, but from inside ourselves, and we see in this new telling of the story; a warning that it is only our...

Yet another television adaptation of H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is in the works, this time from Fox Networks Group.
War of the Worlds, the template-setting 1898 alien invasion sci-fi novel by H.G. Wells, has certainly seen its share of adaptations over its century-plus existence; a multi-medium collection that will soon add a promising miniseries by the BBC. However, Urban Myth Films is prepping its own television take on the classic story of extraterrestrial conflagration. Moreover, the series has procured a pair of prestigious stars for its effort.
Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will headline a War of the Worlds television series. This adaptation – arriving as eight 60-minute episodes – puts Wells’s story through the lens of modernization, manifesting as a contemporary-set reimagining of the tale; a stark distinction from the BBC miniseries, which adapts a more traditional setting for the story in the brief 1901-1910 era of Edwardian England.

(Update: We have been provided a trailer with English subtitles) It was back in February that we shared the first teaser for Gilles Coulier's Belgian crime drama Cargo and, already, we were much impressed by what was on offer. Veteran character actor Sam Louwyck - I first came across him in Ex Drummer and his presence in anything since has been a sure fire mark of quality - takes the lead inwhat promises to be one of the stronger pictures of the year. In the cold waters of the North Sea, Leon Broucke jumps overboard from his fishing boat in front of his eldest son, Jean. The old man slips into a deep coma, leaving his son with a huge debt and responsibility for the...

Though there are no English subtitles on the first trailer for Gilles Coulier's Belgian crime drama Cargo there really aren't any required to capture the attention and demonstrate that there just may be something special going on here. Veteran Belgian character actor Sam Louwyck - you know his face if you've been paying any attention to recent Belgian cinema at all - plays a key part, which is always a sign of quality, and the visuals really speak for themselves. In the cold waters of the North Sea, Leon Broucke jumps overboard from his fishing boat in front of his eldest son, Jean. The old man slips into a deep coma, leaving his son with a huge debt and responsibility for the family business. The...

New Europe Film Sales is representing the Bel-Swe-Nor-nl co-production.
Cloudboy has won the Works In Progress award - which comes with an $11,000 (€10,000) prize - at Flanders Image’s inaugural NeXT event. The story is about a Belgian boy who connects to his Swedish mother’s Sami roots during a summer trip to Lapland.
An international industry jury said, “We really want to see the special world that director Meikeminne Clinckspoor has created. We thought producer Katleen Goossens was very well prepared with her presentation, and both she and Meikeminne also told us about the heart of the story not just the plot. The story is both original and universal and we think it will appeal to wide audiences.”
Flanders Image had invited invited 13 projects in post-production – all backed by the Flanders Audiovisual fund — to pitch to the international industry in attendance.
The 13 projects in detail:

At the Holland Film Meeting (Hfm) several new projects and new policy initiatives have been announced.
Hfm (Sept 24-27) is the industry component of the Netherlands Film Festival, the 10-day event in Utrecht showcasing he best in Dutch film and which culminates with the most prestigious prizes in Dutch Film - the Golden Calf awards.
The festival itself started in rancorous fashion with the news that producer Klaas de Jong had pulled Roel Reiné’s seafaring epic Michiel de Ruyter from the competition.
De Jong was unhappy that the film hadn’t been nominated for a Best Picture award despite being one of the most commercial Dutch movies of the year.
He complained in the local press that the awards were too arthouse-oriented and didn’t pay enough attention to films that reached the popular audience.
Festival director Willemien van Aalst strongly denied that the festival was ignoring populist fare.
