Carrie Fisher received her long overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday — Star Wars Day. The May 4 ceremony saw her honored by her daughter Billie Lourd, and some other famous “Star Wars” faces. Upon Lourd’s arrival, fans immediately fell in love with her dress, which featured an image of her mother as Princess Leia. And, as it turns out, that dress actually fulfilled a very specific request from Fisher.
In a tweet on Friday morning, Lourd posted a photo of her in the dress, alongside a screenshot of an interview her mother did with Harper’s Bazaar in 2014. In the final moments of that interview, Rodarte designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy told Fisher “we’d love to invite you to our show sometime.”
“Cool. I want to see a dress with Leia on it,” Fisher responded.

Animated films including Netflix’s “Over the Moon” have gone high fashion in the past few years, with computer-generated costumes created by notable fashion designers.
“Sing 2,” now available on-demand, is the latest to recruit high-fashion names to outfit the CGI characters.
Rodarte sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy brought their designs to the film, the sequel to the 2016 animated jukebox musical. An addition to the cast of anthropomorphic animals is Clay Calloway, a lion voiced by U2’s Bono. Clay is a reclusive rock legend who is persuaded by koala Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) and porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johansson) to come out of retirement and perform onstage one more time.
Clay’s musical past is only alluded to in the film, so the design for his costumes needed to fill out his backstory as a timeless talent. “He was this incredible musician and songwriter, and so we were going to resurrect that stage persona,...

Kirsten Dunst is going to be a mother of two. The 38-year-old actress announced in the Director's Issue of W magazine that she and Jesse Plemons are expecting their second child. The Bring It On alum bared her baby bump in a set of photos for the magazine. "Every shot was on the floor," Dunst joked to the publication. "I was like, 'I can't get up.' I felt like Urkel." The announcement brought back memories to when Dunst was pregnant with her first child, Ennis. As fans will recall, the Spider-Man star revealed the baby news in Rodarte's 2018 campaign. Fast-forward a few years later, and she has once again called on her designer pals Laura and Kate Mulleavy to share that...

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival awards went off at a very fast clip tonight, in an hour’s time. Host Patton Oswalt — or as he billed himself, “Discount Giamatti” — kept the jokes flowing.
Siân Heder’s Coda, which we first told you was swooped up by Apple with a rich $25 million bid, came up big. It won both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize, U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and a Special Jury Ensemble Cast award too. Heder also won Best Director in the U.S. Dramatic section. The movie follows a girl named Ruby. As the only hearing person in an otherwise deaf family, she is divided about staying with them as their fishing business is threatened.
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s Summer of Soul took the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for Documentary.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s daughter, Ava Phillippe, has grown up before our eyes. The 18-year-old has become a regular on red carpets alongside her lookalike mom, has half a million followers on Instagram, and recently took part in a very high-fashion debutante ball in Paris. But unlike many celebrity children, Phillippe hasn’t tried her hand at modeling — until now, as she stars in her first-ever campaign for Rodarte alongside pregnant Kirsten Dunst, Tessa Thompson and more stars.

Kirsten Dunst has been hitting red carpets for the past two decades, and she usually turns to one design duo to dress her: Rodarte’s Laura and Kate Mulleavy. So it makes sense that for the Mulleavy sisters’ directorial debut, they cast their sartorial muse as their leading lady. Dunst stars in Woodshock, out in select theaters September 22, as Theresa, a woman trying to cope and escape a personal loss with the use of drugs, which leads to a dark, trippy and symbolic movie that brings the designer sisters to the forefront of cinema.

Although until now they’ve only been known as fashion designers, cinema has always been part of Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s work. The siblings often use films as inspiration for their collections and have delivered runway shows dedicated to the likes of Japanese horror movie Kuroneko among others, their elaborate, stunning designs are also staples of awards season red carpets with actresses like Kirsten Dunst and Natalie Portman wearing them to festivals and ceremonies. In fact, Portman collected her first Best Actress Oscar in a purple Rodarte gown, after Kate and Laura had designed many of the costumes for Black Swan. After being so immersed in the world of cinema, it seems that making a film was the logical next step, and so they’ve done with Woodshock, a hallucinatory journey into the mind of Theresa (Dunst) a young woman battling depression after the death of her mother.

September is a month of new beginnings.
Summer fades into fall, school begins again, and the movie world is buzzing with the Toronto International Film Festival, which we're lucky to host here in Canada. However, even if you can't make it to Tiff, quite a few titles from the festival open in theatres across the country in September, so you can still be a part of the conversation.
Not only that, but there's plenty of highly-anticipated blockbusters opening this month, including the re-make of Stephen King's It, the sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service, and another Lego inspired animated adventure.

In continuing our fall preview, and after highlighting the 25 best films we’ve already seen, today brings a look at the unknown. We’ve narrowed down 30 works with (mostly) confirmed release dates that are coming over the next four months and have us intrigued. While some won’t show up until late December, a good amount will first premiere over the next few weeks at various film festivals, so check back for our reviews.
See our list below, and return soon for our final preview: the festival premieres we’re most looking forward to.
30. Thor: Ragnarok (Taika Waititi; Nov. 3)
While their most recent superhero feature, Spider-Man: Homecoming, had more personality than a standard outing for Marvel, it still couldn’t quite shake the cookie-cutter feeling that plagues the rest of the spandex-laden cinematic universe. Hopefully that notion won’t carry though in Taika Waitit’s Thor threequel. Any film starring...

Moments ago, the Venice Film Festival announced their lineup for this year, and it again seems to suggest a strong brewing Oscar race. Coming hot on the heels of the initial Toronto International Film Festival slate, there’s a lot of overlap between the two. Auteurs like Darren Aronofsky, George Clooney, Guillermo del Toro, Martin McDonagh, and Alexander Payne will be in Italy this time around. Each is hoping to make an Academy Award case for their latest work. Time will tell if that happens, but there’s definitely potential here. Read on to see some of what will be playing in Venice at the end of August/the beginning of September… Among the 2017 entrants of note for this fest, we have Downsizing from Alexander Payne, First Reformed from Paul Schrader, Lean on Pete from Andrew Haigh, mother! from Darren Aronofsky, The Shape of Water from Guillermo del Toro, Suburbicon from George Clooney,...

Venice Announces 2017 Lineup, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Suburbicon,’ ‘mother!,’ and Many More
Will 2017 be the year that Venice gets its king-making mojo back? After a steady run of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — the festival missed out on last year’s big winner, “Moonlight,” which bowed at Telluride. This year’s lineup is a promising one, and while it’s still very early in the process, it’s difficult not to pick through today’s announcement of the festival’s slate and not search for the big contenders.
As was previously announced, the festival will open with Alexander Payne’s social satire “Downsizing,” starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig. The festival will also play home to the premiere of the Netflix original “Our Souls at Night,” as part of their planned tribute to stars Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Annette Bening will lead the competition jury, ending an 11-year succession of male jury chiefs.

The first trailer for Woodshock, the debut feature from fashion designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy, ends on a question: “What did you do, Theresa?” But the initial look at the film provides few answers, and lots of gorgeous-but-disorienting visuals. For more details we’ll have to go to the official summary, which explains that Kirsten Dunst plays “a haunted young woman spiraling in the wake of profound loss, torn between her fractured emotional state and the reality-altering effects of a potent cannabinoid drug.” (So that’s what she’s tasting.) The Mulleavys are best known for founding Rodarte, but waded into the cinematic waters designing ballet outfits for Black Swan.

There was a mini-boomlet a few years ago in cinematic fashion films, and Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy, the two sisters who are the designers for the fashion label Rodarte, were behind several of the best. As Tom Ford has proven, major players in the world of fashion design can yield great results in the medium of cinema. The latest to test this theory are Kate Mulleavy and Laura Mulleavy, founders of the label Rodarte. Their debut film, backed by A24, is Woodshock and the first trailer has arrived today.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Joe Cole, and Pilou Asbæk, it looks to be a gorgeously-rendered drama which borders on the experimental as the trailer shows a variety of dream-like shots. The story follows Dunst’s character as she recovers from a loss and we experience her fractured reality as she copes with drugs. In what looks to be a visually stunning fall surprise, check out the trailer and poster below.

Here are five Star Wars-themed gowns that were shown last week during New York Fashion Week. They come from Rodarte by Kate and Laura Mulleavy. The five sci-fi dresses served as the finale to the show. When talking about the dress designs, Kate Mulleavy told the Los Angeles Times,
"We couldn’t have done a collection like this and not included ‘Star Wars’. Those films represent for us a time when anything was possible."
The full collection was inspired by memories of the way the designers dressed as children in the early '80s, so these fit in perfectly.

Here's what they dished: 1. Always find a unique gift. "Get them something that no one else will. Really try to think outside the box," they advised. 2. Make it personal. "If you can't afford an amazing gift, or if you're just stumped in general, give the gift of your undivided...

Natalie Portman married Benjamin Millepied over the weekend in Big Sur, CA. The couple, who met back in 2009 on the set of Black Swan, gathered their loved ones at the coastal town for an intimate outdoor celebration. Along with their families, friends like Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and Macaulay Culkin gathered to see Natalie and Benjamin exchange vows in a Jewish ceremony. Natalie and Benjamin's 14-month-old son, Aleph Millepied, was also present for the nuptials, and he was able to stay up late enough to see some of the dancing during the reception. Drew Barrymore and Natalie Portman had a double date night in NYC yesterday. The actresses both brought their guys along for the New York City Ballet's 2012 Spring Gala. Drew, who wore a white Chanel dress, posed with fiancé Will Kopelman. Natalie, meanwhile, wore Dior to smile for pictures alongside husband Benjamin Millepied. Benjamin, a dancer himself, choreographed a piece for the Spring debut. The Rodarte sisters, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, designed costumes for his ballerinas. It was a reunion of sorts, since Benjamin, Natalie, and the Mulleavys also worked together to costume and choreograph Black Swan. Gilles Mendel and Swarovski also provided outfits for other works that are currently being staged by the Ballet. View Slideshow ›...

The Mulleavy sisters take a journey to the plains in yet another dynamite collection for their critically adored line!
Rodarte has wowed critics since their debut with wares that often appear more like a work of art than an article of clothing, but their Fall 2011 collection showed the clear progression the girls have made in making their work both aesthetically stimulating and wearable at the same time. Laura and Kate Mulleavy took us to the plains this season as nature, often the case with these sisters, was the theme for yet another remarkable collection from the duo.
There were dresses, aprons and robe like coats in soft blues, greens and dirty whites. There was even the appearance of ruby red slippers in the form of two gorgeous looks worn by American models Lindsey Wixson and Karlie Kloss — midwest girls themselves!
Given the girls ability to continually top their previous collections...

A costume designer for Black Swan has addressed reports the sibling fashion duo Rodarte was upset after missing out on credit rights on the film.
Sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy were brought into the production by lead actress Natalie Portman, a huge fan of their high-end label Rodarte, to help create the clothing worn by ballet dancers in the thriller.
The pair produced seven looks for Black Swan but were said to have been left fuming after Amy Westcott was credited as the official designer, making her the only crew member eligible for any costume design award nominations.
Westcott, who is up for a BAFTA Award for her work next week, insists she feels "despair and betrayal" by reports she has cheated the Rodarte sisters out of receiving credit.
She tells the Clothes on Film website, "Controversy is too complimentary a word for two people using their considerable self-publicising resources to loudly complain about their credit once they realised how good the film is...
"I was happy for Rodarte's persistent publicity efforts at first... I tried to put aside my ego while being airbrushed from history in all of their interviews, as I'm just not that kind of person anyway.
"But when articles were planted that attacked me personally as if I had conspired against them, I felt nothing but despair and betrayal. I don't have a publicist working for me, needless to say, and I was asked to stay quiet - "not to engage", to avoid any bad press towards the film.
"Unfortunately this seems to have proven detrimental to the perception of my work on Black Swan... I am proud of my professionalism and commitment to my work, so to have my name dragged into such ill-informed gossip is galling and hurtful to say the least."...

Designer Amy Westcott hits back over reported complaints by sisters behind Rodarte label about how little credit they had received for outfits
Baftas night looms, but as attention inevitably focuses on how many prizes the King's Speech will win next weekend, a ruckus in the world of fashion threatens to distract film fans' attention from Britain's answer to the Oscars.
A row is escalating over the costumes worn in Black Swan, Darren Aronofsky's brilliantly over-the top ballet psychodrama, which has been nominated for five Oscars and 12 Baftas.
As the British Academy of Film and Television Arts readies itself for its awards night in London, its nomination last month for Black Swan's costume designer Amy Westcott has been soured by an extraordinary row over the proper credit rights on the film with Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the duo behind the cult, grungey fashion label Rodarte.

Directed By: Darren Aronofsky
Starring: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel
Darren Aronofsky’s latest work is perhaps the ultimate mediation on the art/act of performance.
The tale of the female ballet dancer and her strive for perfection is detailed here in a manner unlike any other seen upon the big screen, with the metaphorical “journey into hell” that the protagonist takes; a frenzied and visceral portrayal of an industry rarely exposed to the outside from within its notoriously cliquey confines.
Black Swan tells the story of Nina (Natalie Portman), a young ballerina who is a rising star in the New York City Ballet. Nina is an only child, her protective mother (Barbara Hershey) bordering on mentally unstable, which in turn has placed a strong-headed desire within Nina to succeed professionally. A rivalry develops between her and Lily (Mila Kunis), a recent arrival to the group, and one whose...

While much has been made of the brutality of Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan—the broken toenails, the peeling cuticles, the figurative goose bumps (and literal swan bumps!)—less has been made of its splendor. In a movie that “makes a meal out of the dualities and polarities in the Tchaikovsky ballet,” as V.F.’s James Wolcott puts it,...
