Ruth Meehan's debut film is a feisty descendant of the likes of Calendar Girls, with its female strength-in-the-face-of-illness narrative that presents its similar themes of dealing with cancer while navigating friendship and loss, with a younger audience demographic in mind.
Gemma-Leah Devereux - who put in a small but notable performance as Liza Minelli in biopic Judy - brings complexity to the central character of Kate, a stand-up comedian who uses her life as a punchline for her gigs, gambles her depression medication with pals and has quite a lot of dark thoughts about death.
But Kate discovers wanting to die and suddenly being faced with the prospect are two very different things when an accident leads to a diagnosis of breast cancer and the looming challenge of a round of chemotherapy and surgery. With a wit so sharp she's in danger of cutting herself, Kate proves initially abrasive to the group of.

Liza Minnelli graces the cover of Variety magazine’s annual Oscar edition, but anyone expecting the Hollywood icon to open up about Renée Zellweger’s performance as Judy Garland in the film “Judy” will be disappointed. Minnelli, a Best Actress Oscar winner herself for Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret” film adaptation, tells Variety she has no interest in seeing the film. The only comment Minnelli will make regarding Zellweger and “Judy” is the following: “I hope [Zellweger] had a good time making it.”
Zellweger is considered the frontrunner to win the Best Actress prize for playing Garland, mother of Liza Minnelli. The latter appears briefly in the Rupert Goold-directed drama, played by actress Gemma-Leah Devereux at the moment that Minnelli, in her 20s, had already launched a successful Broadway career. Renée Zellweger may be earning praise for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, but the real-life story behind the Wizard of Oz star is much more tragic.
Garland dominated movie screens with roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis and the Easter Parade, but the star struggled with substance abuse and body image issues since her breakout at the age of 16.
The new film on her life, Judy, follows Garland from 1968 to 1969 as she performs a series of sold-out concerts in London while struggling to cope with depression and her addictions.

Contrary to the biopic “Judy,” the first encounter between Judy Garland and her future husband Mickey Deans was in no way a “meet-cute” at a party. In fact, their first encounter was decidedly unglamorous.
As the film tells it, Garland (played by Renee Zellwegger) was invited to a party by her daughter Liza Minnelli (Gemma-Leah Devereux), who, by that time, had already wowed audiences in a chip-off-the-old-block way with a Tony-winning performance in “Flora the Red Menace.” We see Garland and Deans (Finn Wittrock) lock eyes across the crowded room, his approach, flirtation, flying sparks, and so on.
But the truth is, there was no happenin’ Hollywood party, no instant chemistry, not even a magical moment when their eyes met. The truth: They first met when he delivered drugs to her hotel room in the middle of the night.

Famous people playing other famous people can be a tricky business. At its worst, the exercise yields nothing but an embarrassing impersonation, but there’s always the hope for that moment of transcendence, in which one legend disappears into the skin of another. In recent years, Michael Douglas managed it, playing Liberace in “Behind the Candelabra,” and a pre-“Black Panther” Chadwick Boseman accomplished it twice, as Jackie Robinson in “42” and James Brown in “Get On Up.”
To that list, we must add Renee Zellweger in “Judy,” giving the kind of masterful performance that requires that we forget everything we think we know about Zellweger as an actor. For 118 minutes, she becomes Judy Garland, which is no easy task — Garland is one of the 20th century’s greatest icons, and while any number of drag queens over the years have paid her varying degrees of homage, she was a...

Judy Garland has a special place in Hollywood. The legend is largely beloved, even to this day. From her early days until her last, she was always embraced by at least part of the world, and sometimes…the entire world. This week, after blowing away audiences at the Telluride Film Festival, the biopic Judy brings the last part of her life to the screen. Buoyed by an amazing performance by Renée Zellweger, the movie is better than your garden variety industry tale. Oscar is going to come calling for this one, mark my words. Luckily, it’s solidly entertaining and never once feels like homework. The film is a biopic, centered on the final year of the famous actress/singer’s life. When we meet her, Judy Garland (Zellweger) is essentially homeless, having been kicked out of her hotel room she stays in with her young daughter and son. Bringing...

Renée Zellweger performs miracles playing Judy Garland: singing her heart out, baring her bruised soul and acting with a ferocity that ultimately rises to a state of grace. Yes, Judy, the well-meaning but wobbly biopic that can barely contain her take on the late Star Is Born star, is pure Oscarbait — ready made for an Academy campaign and rarely soaring to the level of a portrayal that’s a dazzling, deeply felt tribute from one artist to another.

Turn your sound on because the first trailer for “Judy,” the Judy Garland biopic starring Renee Zellweger, is here.
The minute-long teaser, which dropped Friday, is backed by a haunting version of Garland (Zellweger) singing her signature song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” That abrupt final note will gut you, so be prepared.
Set in 1968, “Judy” covers Garland’s final string of concerts at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, diving deep into her battles with her management and her family, juxtaposed with her public relationship with fans.
Garland, who was Oscar-nominated for “A Star Is Born” (1954) and “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), died in London in June 1969 of a barbiturate overdose, 12 days after her 47th birthday.

Take away the gore in Peter Nicholson’s story of young hikers and you’d have an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism
Peter Nicholson’s low-budget horror-thriller starts better than it ends. As two young hikers (Gemma-Leah Devereux, Rebecca Night) are led off the beaten track by a hunky guide (Callum Blue), the first act’s every set-up benefits from the screen-filling backdrops of the eponymous moors. It’s disappointing, then, that Nicholson should retreat from this spectacular stage to a farmhouse haunted by mysterious deaths; doubly so when the relationships, dialogue and action all stop ringing true. Redact the gore, and it’d make an attractive promo for Dartmoor tourism, but A Night in the Woods (2012) hounded its characters far more persuasively over this particular terrain.

Writer-Director Brendan Grant’s Get Up and Go, pairing Love/Hate alumni Peter Coonan and Killian Scott is an enjoyable if sometimes uneven, home-grown comedy drama. The story follows one day in the lives of frustrated musician Alex (Coonan), who has long dreamt of a move to London and his friend Coilin (Killian Scott) a dreamer hoping to break into the stand-up comedy circuit in Dublin. When his girlfriend Sinead (Sarah McCall) tells him she’s pregnant Alex panics and fast-tracks his London plans, hoping to borrow the fare from Coilin, but Coilin has problems of his own. He’s just lost his job and he’s become obsessed with Lola (Gemma-Leah Devereux) a girl who barely registers his existence. It’s a wry and often funny look at how we deal with life’s ups and downs. While Alex lets his head rule, Coilin lets his heart, and Grant...

It seems safe to assume that clowns became “scary” in the mid-1970s, when John Wayne Gacy, branded “The Killer Clown,” murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men. 35-plus years later, director and co-writer Conor McMahon makes them funny again in Stitches, a horror-comedy about a grease-painted balloon folder who returns from the dead to exact revenge on the kids whose taunting inadvertently caused his death six years before.
Aiming for a gruesomely silly vibe that plays like equal parts American Pie and Evil Dead 2, Stitches preys on teenage foibles and clown clichés alike, offering mostly solid if not quite cult-classic-level fun.
Ross Noble plays Stitches, a drunken lout who dies in a bloody kitchen accident after kids at a birthday party decide they don’t like the performance he’s giving. Some six years later, birthday boy Tom (Tommy Knight) still cowers in fear at the prospect of seeing anyone in clown make-up,...

Ross Noble has always been entertaining to me, but he’s not a comedian with universal appeal. But enough about his standup, how successful is both Noble himself, and Stitches as a whole? As it turns out, it’s not bad. I was reminded a few times of the 1994 oddity Funny Man where a cheeky supernatural killer dispatches people in various horrific and outrageous ways. And that’s what’s on offer here. After accidentally meeting a grizzly demise during a children’s party, Stitches returns to get his bloody revenge on the pesky kids (now teenagers) who were responsible. And each one is picked off in increasingly gory ways.
The effects aren’t stellar. The film’s low budget and you can tell. But...

Ross Noble was a pretty constant presence at FrightFest the 13th. He took the stage for an impromptu stand-up intro routine before the event organisers even appeared, was frequently seen milling around in the foyer, and in particular introduced his big screen debut as psychopathic revenging clown Stitches. Noble’s intros were always entertaining to me, but he’s not a comedian with universal appeal and some audience members weren’t as amused.

Check your coulrophobia at the door because there is a new clown themed horror film coming your way from Ireland. The title is Stitches and this indie production recently had a showing at the UK Film4 Frightfest. During that World Premiere, a behind-the-scenes teaser trailer was released for the film. In the clip, director Conor McMahon discusses the motivations for the villain. It seems Stitches was killed at a child's birthday gone wrong. He now wants some bloody revenge. A blend of comedy and horror, there is some talk, in the reel, of how some of the comedy is set up. Some gags are shown as well. This is a film that blends witchcraft and revenge, so expect some supernatural thrills when this title releases later this year. Release Date: October 26, 2012 (UK). Director/writer: Conor McMahon. Cast: Tommy Knight, Ross Noble, Gemma-Leah Devereux, John McDonnell, and Eoghan McQuinn. A behind-the-scenes...

Upon my first look at the marketing material for the movie Stitches, I thought, "Great… another killer clown movie. How can they possibly do anything original with it." I went in to this screening at Cannes 2012 with very low expectations.
Unbeknownst to me, Stitches was going to be one of the best movies I have seen this year. Forget pigeonholing it into genre; Stitches hit every single beat in both horror and comedy, with well-executed gore, suspense, comedy, timing, storytelling, etc., leading me to not only enjoy the movie, but to be able to feel my fellow audience members' discomfort and laughter, despite (or because of) their individual triggers.
Also, despite being offended by the actions of the clown, the shitty teenagers, or any part of the movie in general, the audience was engaged by Stitches,...
