Earlier this year, just before actor Jason Perini submitted a script to the Jameson First Shot competition, he sat down and wrote a letter to his wife.
"I wrote a little document that I printed out and gave to her, saying I was going to consider quitting this whole [acting] thing in January 2018 because I was just getting tired of things," Perini told If.
A week after that, the father of three auditioned for a role in the second season of Jane Campion's Top of the Lake - and booked it.
Unfortunately that plum gig clashed with the dates for First Shot, and Perini decided to pull out.
The annual competition is fronted by Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street, and grants three filmmakers the opportunity to make a short - this year starring Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Reese Witherspoon snagged another Oscar nomination for Wild, the new film from the director of Dallas Buyers Club...
Certain films can be both uplifting and exhausting, bringing the feel-good factor not from sunny optimism, but from a hard-won victory over cynicism and adversity. The most comfortable Wild ever feels would be in that category, taking inspiration from Cheryl Strayed's memoir Wild: From Lost To Found On The Pacific Crest Trail.
The book covers her 1,100 mile hike across America's Pacific Crest Trail, from the Mojave Desert to the border of Washington State, through extreme weather on both ends of the spectrum, without any prior backpacking experience.
Using an elliptical time structure, we first meet Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon) at the top of a mountain, some distance into her hike, suffering through a scene of cringe-making body horror that wouldn't be too out of place in an Evil Dead movie.

It seems with each passing year the flood of year end lists are published earlier and earlier, assuring that at least a handful of films deserving a place on any given list are missed due to a lack of time and opportunity. Even here at Ioncinema.com, posting my list after the calender year has actually closed, it feels a little premature writing up a list, knowing there are plenty of films that I’ve yet to see due to a lack of screenings nearby – Mr. Turner, Foxcatcher, Leviathan, Winter Sleep and Selma just to name a few. I should note that it seems there is a lack of international releases on this list as well, but rest assured, of the many I saw this year, most won’t reach a domestic release until sometime in 2015, so films like Christian Petzold’s Phoenix, Tsai Ming-liang’s Journey to the West,...

The year has finally drawn to a close. They're celebrating 2015 already in some parts of the globe (I guess our troops in Afghanistan are popping champagne right about now). But before really send 2014 off into the the sunset, a last look at the best of what silver screens had to offer this year...in one guy's opinion, anyway. Following up on yesterday's "If I Had an Oscar Ballot" post, I've run down my top picks in each standard Oscar category below. On the second page, you'll find a list of supplementary awards, stuff that the Academy doesn't recognize (but in a few cases, perhaps should). Feel free to offer up your own favorites in the comments section. And allow me to wish you a Happy New Year as the clock turns. *** Best Visual Effects: "Under the Skin" (Runner-up: "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes") It's a shame this branch can't see past internal politics,...

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

Film acting is a difficult craft to judge. Actually, most film crafts are difficult to judge because they’re not usually very transparent. When you go to see live theater acting, you are certain you’re watching the extent of an actor’s performance. You’re directly witnessing their abilities. When you’re watching a film, however, you’re seeing the compilation of selected takes and a chopped-up performance. It’s more likely that a film director can get a good performance from an actor by perfecting every brief segment given in each brief shot and then constructing one out of those building blocks. Typically I look at a film’s editing when judging its acting merits. Choppier films can seem an overcompensation for weaker acting talent, while long shots are more akin to theater and require strong actors to hold those uninterrupted scenes. A perfect example of the latter this year is Birdman, which...

According to cinematographer Belanger, almost every shot in "Wild"—which features a seemingly makeup-free performance by Witherspoon— is done with natural light. Shot for $7 million in Oregon and California, "Wild" is directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, whose editors John Mac Murphy and Martin Pensa delicately stitch together Cheryl Strayed's past and present, which are limned with different colors by Belanger. Below, he also talks about the most difficult aspects of the shoot, including "not to pass out" during takes. [Variety]...

Reese Witherspoon and Jean-Marc Vallée making Wild
Jean-Marc Vallée’s eighth feature film Wild is just about to begin its theatrical release in North America. The film stars Reese Witherspoon, who plays Cheryl Strayed as she goes on an incredible, though unprepared, hike across the Pacific Crest Trail to morn the death of her mother. This new release provides a great opportunity to reflect on the director’s career and survey the literature surrounding him.
Even though I’m sympathetic to Barry Hertz’s article in Maclean’s, "Jean-Marc Vallée: Film’s redemption man" (Sept. 15, 2014), for acknowledging the director’s talent and growing international reputation, it still doesn’t do Vallée justice as it concludes with vague generalizations that, instead of enlightening, overlook his actual merits. Hertz overemphasizes Vallée’s work with actors and argues that he ‘lacks’ a unique style of directing, criticizes him for his modesty, and...

Peaks and Vallée: Witherspoon Eats, Prays, Hikes
When Cheryl Strayed’s memoir was released in 2012, the climate for gender politics was different. The book’s popularity soared not only because it was endorsed by media giants such as Oprah, and that its cover was gender neutral, but because it was, simply, a relatable human story. Strayed’s personal journey ends with her having no money, home, or romantic partner, and yet it’s a happy ending. Reese Witherspoon is a revelatory as the brash yet broken central character in writer Nick Hornby’s refreshing tome adaptation, while director Jean-Marc Vallée delivers both a sensorial and lyrical movie adaptation of Wild, which despite being written for the screen and directed by men, is feminist through and through.
It seems as though the scariest word in popular media these days is ‘feminism’. Everyone from nubile It Girls to seasoned actors are quizzed about their feminist stance.

Want to know what's in contention for Best Picture? Look to Best Film Editing. No category except Best Director has as much overlap with the top category as of late. Is that how things will turn out this year? Let's take a look… That aside, the branch is also fond of suspense films, action films and war films. Musicals (if they are big players overall) and films with non-linear narratives tend to have a leg up, too. We don't tend to see film editors racking up nods like we do other disciplines, though. Michael Kahn is the all-time nominations leader with eight. And don't get me wrong – that's a lot of nominations. But compared to "all time" figures in every other crafts category, it's on the low side. So with that out of the way, what can we bank on this year? William Goldenberg won this category two years ago...

By 1995, Cheryl Strayed had lost her way. A variety of personal setbacks left her lost and without direction. Her mother had died of cancer, she was divorced and believing she had nowhere left to turn as her personal demons were eating her alive, which is when she decided it was time for something dramatic to get her back to the woman her mother believed her to be. She would travel the Pacific Crest Trail, taking her more than 1,000 miles through the Mojave Desert, north to the boarder of Washington State and Oregon. She told her story in her 2012 memoir "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail" and now director Jean-Marc Valle (Dallas Buyers Club), screenwriter Nick Hornby (About a Boy, An Education) and star/producer Reese Witherspoon bring the story to the big screen in Wild, and the result is inspiring. Knowing the film's premise walking in,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...

Here we are. After months of seeing the films and seeing them campaigned, we’re 72 hours away from the winners being revealed. In the crafts categories, we’ve already had a race for the ages, where highlights have included some legendary accomplishments ("Gravity's" visual effects anyone?), the makeup artists and hairstylists continuing to prove their eclecticism and the division between the costume designers and the production designers proving uneventful, with each branch pretty much behaving in the same manner as before. This isn’t touching the most bizarre element of this year’s race – the controversy in Best Original Song. Expect "Gravity" to dominate the crafts categories. Nominated for seven awards, it appears the favorite in many of the fields throughout. But that’s not to say Oscar night won’t have some exciting moments. Will there be any upsets? Will "The Great Gatsby" really become a double Oscar winner?...

The Oscar nominations for the 86th Academy Awards have been announced but who will win and who should win? In a banner year for great movies, 2013 gave us thought-provoking and entertaining experience at the cinema. On Oscar night, Steve McQueen.s .12 Years a Slave. will take home the top prize but Alfonso Cuaron.s .Gravity. will win all the technical awards including Best Director. Quite fitting since one provoked (.12 Years.) and the other entertained (.Gravity.).

Now that we are knee-deep in awards season it is time to avoid to political back-slapping and enjoy the film year in retrospect. There’s little chance that the 86th Academy Awards nominations will throw up any grand surprises however the debate it will stir will all point to a positive outcome: that people who love film will champion them and argue about their inclusion (or not).
With the 2014 BAFTA nominations recently announced it’ll be interesting to see how far apart the two Academies are this year, but there are sure to be favourites in common. Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave is certain to gather up nominations, likewise Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity will grab onto directing and technical awards for sure, American Hustle is certain to have a nomination of two as well. What we’re looking forward to are the smaller films, unable to throw stocked coffers at For Your Consideration campaigns,...
