I feel like this season, from what I've seen in the last few, has been extremely entertaining. I think they're going out on a high note." Keith Urban learned how a few encouraging words he spoke backstage after an awards show inspired a contestant who auditioned for American Idol on Wednesday.
Casey Thrasher, 22, a father of two young children from Tuscaloosa, Ala., recalled his unexpected yet inspirational meeting with Urban after the CMAs in 2012.
"You were humble enough to come over and speak to me. You said, 'I believe in you, brother,'" Thrasher said, before launching, appropriately enough, into an emotional performance of "Believe" by Brooks & Dunn.

It’s Candice vs. Kree. But only one is still fighting.
Here is my solemn promise: The last competitive episode of every American Idol season is anticlimactic and boring, and the last actual episode of every American Idol season is shockingly, face-kickingly wonderful. Seriously. Wednesday night we watched as Candice and Kree sauntered around a Cirque du Soleil-size stage and gurgled tunes new and old for an audience that knew exactly what to expect. It wasn’t a memorable night for either performer, even though they both delivered at least one knockout performance. My takeaway from the night is this: If you came in rooting for Kree, you’re still rooting for Kree now. If you came in rooting for Candice, you’re still rooting for Candice. And I like you better. Because Candice is the rightful next American Idol.
Here it is, my final rankings of season 12. There are only two performers,...

We learned on Wednesday's Top 7 night that the current crop of American Idol stars probably aren't destined for starring roles in Rock of Ages, and that should sit well with all of them. But we learned on Thursday night's elimination show that life continues to be unfair for the pitch-perfect contestants left in the competition and wonderfully fortunate for that other guy. Spin your shiny little bow-tie, you meek little Mephistopheles. Here are 20 observations about Thursday's Coke-sponsored spectacle.
1. That group performance of "Somebody to Love" was, of course, stupid. Something about Janelle's aggressive smiley-ness is grating to me today. Also, Lazaro's voice seriously seems to be dwindling from week to week, while the vibrancy of his clashing apparel is holding steady at "completely jarring."
2. Did I say "Somebody to Love" sucked? Well, it did until Candice tore through it with the raging heavy machinery of her voice, leaving everyone else and their hapless grins decapitated.

Time for some "American Idol" results. Will the men keep getting cut? We won't know just yet, first we have to sit through a group sing to "Somebody to Love" by Queen, which is surprisingly good. Probably because there are so many talented women left.
Ford commercial, video recap of last night, Casey James, some other stuff. Then we reveal the judges' Top 3 -- Keith said Kree, Angie and Amber; Nicki says Angie, Amber and Kree; Randy says Amber, Kree and Angie; Mariah says Kree, Amber and Candice. So, that's not really that interesting.
Some real results -- Kree, Angie and Lazaro are in the Top 3. Oh. My. God. Are you kidding us with this?! Lazaro is soooooo much worse than everyone else in the competition. This not even funny anymore, he needs to go.
Carrie Underwood is there to perform and we'll make no bones about it -- we love her so much.

Over 25 million votes were cast following last night's rock and roll themed American Idol. Jimmy Iovine will chime in and then we'll narrow down the field of contestants to the Top 6, but the judges' save is still in play for two more weeks.
Will they use it? Or will they let the contestant with the lowest number of votes go? Let's find out...
The Top 7 open with "Somebody To Love" and all I can do is compare it to Glee, which is what happens with just about every big group number. Candice Glover had an amazing stand-out moment that I'd like to hear again. As the guys in this competition are sent home, these numbers are going to get more and more difficult to pull off just based on the differences in style among the female contestants. Their voices don't really blend well, so all girl numbers are going to be tough.

Another talented contestant sang for survival on the April 4 episode of ‘American Idol.’ Are you surprised at the results?
The top 7 took on classic rock songs on April 3, trying to impress judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson. But did America feel the same way the judges did?
Jimmy Iovine’s Comments On The Top 7
Burnell Taylor – “He was so behind the music. The band was on east coast time and he was on west time. He should be in the bottom two.”
Lazaro and Angie – “It was cabaret.”
Kree Harrison – “She did choose the right song. She sings with dignity. She did great.”

American Idol 2013 eliminated Burnell Taylor in April 4th show tonight. Tonight's show ,kicked off with another sad group performance from the top 7 contestants. After another break, Host Ryan Seacrest ,revealed that Kree Harrison,Angie Miller, and Lazaro Arbos were all safe and in the top three. Next, former Idol champ Carrie Underwood, hit the stage to sing her new song called, "See You Again." American Idol is getting down to brass tacks. Following performances by Carrie Underwood, who debuted her new single "See You Again," and heartthrobby season-nine finalist Casey James, the field was mercilessly whittled down to six. And, once again, Jimmy Iovine's prediction did not come true. The record producer foresaw an exit for the faltering Lazaro Arbos after his uneventful rendition of Queen's "We Are the Champions." But not only was the fan favorite safe, he actually replaced the stalwart Candice Glover in the top three! Don't worry, Candice was also perfectly safe along with Kree Harrison, Angie Miller and Amber Holcomb (the...

Burnell and Janelle Arthur were in the Bottom 2. He was one of two remaining guys in the competition and sang India Arie's "Ready For Love" for the save. No, you're not seeing things! That was Jana Kramer, best known as troubled model/actress/screenwriter/singer/songwriter Alex Dupre from "One Tree Hill," performing at the Cmt Awards on Wednesday night.
Kramer's character left Tree Hill early in the show's final season, leaving behind her boyfriend to pursue a country music career. In a case of art-imitating-life-imitating-art, Kramer herself hit the tour circuit, too. Her debut album was released on Tuesday, and fans got a little listen at the Cmt Awards as she played the show into a commercial with her single "Why Ya Wanna," which, of course, "One Tree Hill" fans are already familiar with.
Kramer isn't the only emerging artist who played an abbreviated version of a new song as the show lead into a commercial break. "American Idol" fans likely recognized Casey James as the third place finalist from Season 9. He played his song "Crying On...

Idol is a bubbling cistern of anxiety at this point, and I won't paaaatroniiiize (quoth Hollie's "I Can't Make You Love Me" performance) you with much fanfare before the nitty-gritty. We have four combatants left, and exactly two of them should be shoo-ins for the final episode. And yet, they aren't. Will the finest two vocalists prevail? Because I am telling you they might be going. Bawl for us, Jennifer Holliday.
The less said about this week's themes, the better. We had "California Dreamin'," a theme that encompasses all California-set songs, California-born songwriters and singers, and basically anyone else, and we also had the bizarre cryptogram "Songs You Wish You'd Written." Uh? Do any of these kids write songs? Let's leave the heavy lifting to Goffin and King, and not to the girl who needed an interpreter for the meaning of Journey's "Faithfully." (Ahem, Hollie.) Adele's 21 remains at #2, followed by the Shins'Port of Morrow and One Direction's Up All Night.

After its $155 million box-office opening, "The Hunger Games" pulled off the rare double-play by landing its soundtrack at the top of the Billboard 200 charts in the same week. "The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond," sold 175,000 last week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
The compilation, which features songs by Taylor Swift with the Civil Wars, as well as tunes by Maroon 5, the Decemberists, Miranda Lambert, Arcade Fire and Kid Cudi, sold just enough copies to once again keep Adele at #2, where her tenacious 21 sold another 130,000 copies.
After a five-year hiatus, the Shins returned with their fourth studio album, Port of Morrow, which landed at #3 (74,000), while rowdy hip-hop collective Odd Future debuted at #5 with Of Tape, Vol. 2. The...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Jermaine responds to booting
Jermaine Jones spoke to Hln about his disqualification from American Idol on Wednesday’s show because of past run-ins with the law. The 25-year-old singer said that he had no idea what was going to happen when he was called into a room with producers Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, where the two informed him – on camera – that he was being kicked off the show. He described it as a “very humbling experience” and said he was “very disappointed… it hurt a lot.”

American Idol is hyped as a showcase for great vocalists who could be hitmakers. That's dishonest. American Idol, most of the time, is a showcase for hot people who want your attention. And I confess: Some of them deserve it! Today I'm counting down the ten hottest dudes ever to take the Idol stage, and I'm offering pictorial proof too! Warm up your vocal cords and prepare to sing out in ecstasy, y'all.
10. Mario Vasquez
Ok, let's make a pact: If we forget the unnerving, deeply troubling scandal that erupted around season four Top 24 competitor Mario Vazquez (which forced him to drop out of the competition), we can simply admire his boyish, sweet looks like a nicely blended oil painting. His cover of "I Love Music" is deeply underrated, by the way. Listen to that. Not the creepy other stuff.

“I am the next American Idol because I got something ain’t nobody got,” announced the (overbearingly?) quirky Reed Grimm, 26, before settling in on the Hollywood Week stage to begin the episode’s 78th cover of Ray Charles’ “Georgia on my Mind.” What had Reed got? A special “GrooveSauce”? An impressive music collection of exclusively TV theme song CDs and movie soundtracks?
No! I mean, yes on the latter for sure, but what Reed wanted to pull out of his underwear tee and lord over the others was his impression of Animal from the Muppets.

LeRoy Bell may not have gotten the chance to play original material during his eighth-place run on Season 1 of The X Factor, but if you’ve ever taken an end-of-the-work-week road trip with the radio blasting, you may have heard his 1979 hit, “Livin’ It Up Friday Night.” We caught up with Bell to discuss the way X Factor obsessed over his status as the world’s hottest 60-year-old, what we didn’t see during his televised audition, and his tenuous connection to American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

Sara Bareilles Was The Perfect Opening Act For Sugarland — Not Only Is She Talented, She Gives Back!
It was such a pleasure meeting Sara Bareilles before she opened for Sugarland at the Greek Theater July 26! She even dished about her charity before going on stage and wowing the crowd!
The energy was high at the Greek Theatre on Tuesday night, as a packed crowd of all ages partied to the tunes of Sara Bareilles and country music sensation, Sugarland.
American Idol Season 9 castoff, Casey James, provided the music for the beginning of the night as people flooded in with brews in their hands and boots on their feet. As James serenaded the audience, we had the pleasure of meeting the next act in her dressing room.
Fresh off a day spent working with kids at a music camp called the Rock N’ Roll Camp for Girls in downtown La, Sara shared heart-warming stories of the aspiring young musicians. The 31-year-old musician explained how she brought in her...

Baby lock them doors and turn the lights down low, because tonight the tenth insane season of "American Idol" is coming to a close.
It’s a cycle that brought us singing cleaning ladies, a scatting jazz freak, a galloping Nashville indie heartthrob, a growling sex kitten piñata, a pyromaniac rocker, a gospel lovin' spa concierge straight out of Compton, and, ultimately, two country fetus finalists who were born after Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" hit stores. With Simon Cowell on to bigger (and better?) projects, all eyes were on two new judges, more concerned with promoting their new singles than giving honest critiques.
Welcome to "American Idol X: Everybody’s Ridiculous (And Beautiful And Perfect!)"
The two hour seven minute finale spectacular kicks off at 8pm Edt, and I’ll be live-blogging every hot mess moment of it! The random cameos! The jaw-dropping group numbers! Randy Jackson’s sure-to-be-absurd outfit!

'American Idol': Scotty and Lauren duke it out in the Nokia, on the scene for the performance finale
In seasons past, the scene outside the Nokia Theater La Live in the hour leading up to the performance finale resembled a kind of carnival of Idols past — Hey, it’s Anoop! And… that one kooky girl from Hollywood week! No, the other one! — with a general feeling of excitement and occasion stirring among the crowd waiting to get into the theater. Perhaps I’m just projecting my own indifferent indifference about the season 10 finale here (I simply don’t care about the fact that I don’t care), but yesterday’s scene was far more subdued in comparison. I...

Last season, Crystal Bowersox was hands down the clear winner over Lee DeWyze, and yet Lee won. Why? To get wildly, obnoxiously reductive for a second, I think in part it was because Casey James’ fans were more into voting for another cute boy troubadour than a singer-songwriter mama with dreadlocks. Voter migration likely had an even bigger influence on the outcome of season 8, when Danny Gokey’s fans clearly flocked more to Kris Allen’s wholesome song stylings than Adam Lambert’s platform-shoed glam pop. And in season 6, it’s a safe bet that Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones...

And then there were two. As Haley Reinhart stood backstage after her elimination from American Idol Thursday night, the thought that struck her was how much she would miss everyone. The raspy-voiced blues rocker from Wheeling Illinois was at peace, however, and grateful for the fans that kept her around so long. Now she's in rehearsals for the upcoming American Idols Live summer tour which is scheduled to begin in early July. Haley recently sat down with journalists to discuss her debut album, her reaction to the judges' criticism, and the public's not-always-perfect perception of her. She won't talk about who she thinks will win between Scotty and Lauren, but she does talk about the support she's received from celebs and former Idol contestants like Adam Lambert. She also gives us a peek into her real relationship with fellow Idol contestant Casey James. Despite her departure, Haley Reinhart is happy,...
