For every success story like Colin Trevorrow and his billion dollar breaking transition from "Safety Not Guaranteed" to "Jurassic World," there are countless others who couldn't quite make the indie leap. Sometimes it's the scale of the project that's overwhelming or the machinations of studio politics that does them in, but it's not an easy journey to make. However, Matt Sobel is going to give it a try. The adaptation trend for Young Adult fiction continues apace, with news that Maggie Stiefvater’s popular and award-winning novel The Scorpio Races is under development for the big screen. Focus Features have tasked Jack Thorne (A Long Way Down) with writing the screenplay, with KatzSmith Productions putting their considerable weight behind the project – which has been in the works since the novel was first optioned in 2011, shortly after publication.

For those of us who enjoyed (read: devoured and were equally devoured by) Maggie Stiefvater's new series starter "The Raven Boys" last fall, book two can't come soon enough. Stiefvater's "The Dream Thieves" follow-up is due on shelves this Sept. 17, and while that's still oh-so-long from now, an excerpt has been revealed to tide us all over until this fall! Entertainment Weekly has a first-look at the much-anticipated book's Prologue - which begins simply with "A secret is a strange thing" - as well as a new chat with Stiefvater herself. See also: 25 titles Ya book-to-film fans need to read now In the discussion, she revealed that "The Dream Thieves" is her "favorite of all the books that [she's] written ... It's a Maggie sort of book." She also teased that all that bad boy behavior from book one won't hold a candle, so to speak, to what goes down in "The Dream Thieves.

We’re shocked that Summit Entertainment and Stephenie Meyer have yet to announce some kind of detox program to help those of us who’ve spent up to seven years addicted to the Twilight books and movies. Aren’t they worried about the withdrawal we’ll all experience once we’ve seen Breaking Dawn – Part 2 a few times and have no more Edward and Bella to look forward to? Well, not to suggest that there is anything that can replace Forks and the Cullens in your heart, but we have a few new obsessions you might consider taking up. Which you choose all depends on why you became a Twi-crack addict in the first place. Read on and then suggest your own!

This is an embarrassing admission to make as someone who writes about books professionally (well, that’s the excuse I make for these stacks around me anyway): My love for Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys is so great that I can’t even write a review of it. And when I begin to think of fantasy casting options, my mind goes absolutely blank, because no actors can possibly live up to the characters I’ve made in my mind. I’m not alone in my love — New Line just announced last week that Akiva Goldsman would produce the movie for them. Instead of a standard review here, I’m just going to list a handful of the things that have me seriously crushing on this book:
The wholly original story about four private school boys searching for the body of the Welsh King Glendower, who legend has it...

20 year-old British actor Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Spiderwick Chronicles, August Rush) has signed on to play young Norman Bates in A&E’s upcoming series Bates Motel, which serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock horror classic Psycho. The series will examine the relationship between mother and son and what drives the young-man to become the killer in the classic movie. Vera Farmiga has signed on to play Norma Bates, the domineering that somehow drove her child to kill. Also, has been noted elsewhere, showrunner Carlton Cuse seems to understand that this new series could be interpreted as reworking of the Showtime movie from years ago called Psycho IV: The Beginning. So to distance themselves from that and all it’s continuity issues, it seems the Bates Motel will be more of a reimaging of Norman Bates life; which means now Norman has an older brother named Dylan,...

Akiva Goldman, the writer/producer behind I Am Legend, will make the upcoming Young Adult novel "The Raven Boys" into a teen film for New Line Cinema. The book series by Maggie Stiefvater is about a teen girl named Blue who comes from a long line of psychics and is living under the threat of a prophecy: Blue will cause the death of her true love. So, Blue avoids romantic entanglements - much tougher now that she's 16 and finds herself attracted to a group of four rich prep school friends known as The Raven Boys. They are on a quest to find an ancient Welsh king who, legend has it, is in a deep magical slumber and whoever awakens him will be awarded a favor.
Goldsman is also behind the supernatural TV series "Fringe" and the Paranormal Activity franchise. His Weed Road production company will produce the film along with Safehouse Pictures.

New Line Cinema and Weed Road have acquired the film rights to Maggie Stiefvater's young adult novel "The Raven Boys" says Variety.
The story follows a 16-year old from a family of psychics who has been foretold that she will cause her true love to die.
It gets more difficult as she starts to find herself attracted to them, especially a rich prep school-going circle of teens known as the Raven Boys. One of said group seeks the burial place of a Welsh noble who could grant him any favour.
No writer is attached at present, but Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce.

New Line Cinema may have found its own "Hunger Games." Hypable reports that the studio is going Ya as it's acquired the rights to "The Raven Boys," the first installment (due Sept. 18) of the four-book "Raven Cycle" fantasy series by Maggie Stiefvater.
Sometimes a celeb's dog is actually their better half. That's not the case with all 15 of The Frisky's favorite celeb dogs, but these pooches certainly win their owners points (and, really, how adorable is that pic of Josh Hutcherson with his blue pit bull, whom he named after Ryan Gosling's character in "Drive"?).
We expect some records will be broken — in a manner of, like, minutes. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that tickets for "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" will go on sale at midnight on Oct. 1, a whopping six weeks before it hits theaters on Nov.

Comic-Con Sundays are typically light on horror, and this year is no exception although once again our favorite panel, "Supernatural", is heading to Hall H. Here are the genre highlights as well as info on the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.
One thing we can't stress enough is to keep checking the Sdcc website for updates as nothing's set in stone until the event actually starts happening.

Do you still have the shakes from Hunger Games withdrawal? Have you still not seen it because you don’t like to follow the pack? Are you reading this from your mobile device as you wait for the trailers to begin on your umpteenth viewing? Whichever category you fall into, we thought you’d benefit from a different perspective of the film, from the authors of the next book-to-movie adaptations you’ll probably get hooked on. On Monday, we gave you Shatter Me author Tahereh Mafi’s fangirl review. Here’s a review from Maggie Stiefvater, whose books The Scorpio Races, Shiver and the upcoming The Raven Boys are published by Suzanne Collins’ home, Scholastic. And yes, the former two have been optioned by movie studios.
I don’t think you have any idea how many movie trailers have horses in them. Next time you go to the theater, count.

"The Hunger Games" Director: Gary Ross Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson Rated: PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images - all involving teens Common Sense Media: 13+ Moviefone Says: There may be the outlying naysayer or purist who dislikes the direction of the film, but we think this is even more faithfully adapted than the "Harry Potter" movies. Lawrence, who so beautifully portrayed a similarly focused protective sister in "Winter's Bone," is the heart of the movie, just as Katniss is the center of the books. Katniss volunteers herself to take her sister's place in the Hunger Games, a sacrificial act tantamount to death -- because 24 tributes compete and only one emerges alive. There's a substance to Lawrence that makes her perfectly cast as Katniss and other teen protagonists look frivolous by comparison. This is a story of survival and self-discovery and the meaningless brutality of a...

Well, Ok, as far as we know there are no actual ravens in Shiver author Maggie Stiefvater’s upcoming four-book series, but we are still super excited to see what kind of magic occurs in The Raven Boys, the first installment, due out September 18. Stiefvater, whose flesh-eating horse novel Scorpio Races not only won the prestigious Printz honor but also is also being adapted by Warner Bros., announced the new series this morning.
According to her publisher, Scholastic (that little house that also brought us The Hunger Games), the book is about two very different kids growing up in Virginia. Blue Sargent (name trend!) is the daughter of the town psychic, but she doesn’t really believe the prophecy that she’ll kill her true love if she kisses him. Richard “Dick” Campbell Gansey III is one of the rich boys attending the nearby Aglionby Academy, and despite seeming to have it all,...

Young-adult novels have been a ripe source of inspiration for studios these days especially post-Twilight and Harry Potter. Magic and supernatural creatures aside, fantasy holds many more possibilities and Warner Bros has its sights on a fantasy novel called Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater (Shiver trilogy).
THR reports that David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith’s KatzSmith Productions will produce the film adaptation of Scorpio Races for Warner Bros. Scorpio Races has only been out two weeks and “involves mythological flesh-eating [water] horses from Celtic lore, a scraggy island that hosts an annual race, a young horse trainer and a young woman (the first female to enter the competition) who eventually fall for each other.”

As reported by Deadline, Fox is getting into the heist business with Riders on the Storm, an action film that will center on “a sophisticated heist crew that pulls off high-end robberies during severe weather events.” This was recently pitched to the studio, and it’s set to be written by Sean O’Keefe. The original plan by producers Union Entertainment, however, was to make it into a video game; they didn’t go down this path, although it isn’t stated why. I, personally, don’t see it working as a game, so maybe they had a similar thought.
It’s far too early (and we’ve been given far too little) to make a judgement on the plot, but — the idea of waiting for severe weather to conduct a robbery errs a little on the side of dumb. I mean, how would you even plan that out when...

Another day, another young adult series snatched up by the Hollywood moviemaking machine. This time it's the novel The Scorpio Races, a fantasy novel by Maggie Stiefvater that's been out all of a week. According to THR, Warner Bros. has reined in the film rights for the hot-off-the-presses book, with KatzSmith Productions set to, well, produce. The Scorpio Races centers around a mysterious annual competition where competitors ride water horses (or "kelpies"), flesh-eating beasts from Celtic mythology. It's a dangerous race, with some riders dying before the finish line, and never before in its history has there been a female rider...until Puck Connolly comes along. In addition to bucking tradition and trying not to be bucked off her steed, the young girl begins to fall for the reigning champion of the race, a stoic trainer named Sean Kendrick. It's got all the bullet-points required to hit the Harry Potter...

Studios are still on the hunt for the next franchise to take over the box office after The Twilight Saga goes away. The Hunger Games provides a nice outlet for Lionsgate to fill the void, and now Warner Bros. has picked up another property for a film adaptation. Heat Vision reports the studio has landed the movie rights to The Scorpio Races, a new young adult fantasy novel from Maggie Stiefvater which just hit shelves last week. The story follows the first female competitor in the titular races which utilize mythological flesh-eating horses from Celtic lore on an island where the woman falls in love with her horse trainer. Read on! As you can see, the romance with the fantasy elements keeps it within the same tone as The Twilight Saga, but the competition along with the love story also has shades of The Hunger Games, so you can see...

"...it happens at the start of every November: the 'Scorpio Races'. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die. At age nineteen, 'Sean Kendrick' is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them. 'Puck Connolly' is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn't given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition - the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen..."

Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to a young adult fantasy novel called The Scorpio Races. And as the title states the story involves "mythological flesh-eating horses from Celtic lore, a scraggy island that hosts an annual race, a young horse trainer and a young woman (the first female to enter the competition) who eventually fall for each other."
Maggie Stiefvater wrote the book. She is the author of the best-selling Shiver trilogy, which are "young adult novels revolving around werewolves and first love." Sorry but I haven't read any of these books. David Katzenberg and Abrham Lincoln Vampire Hunter scribe Seth Grahame-Smith’s KatzSmith Productions are set to produce.
This sounds like it could end up being a pretty entertaining film! What are your thoughts?
Here's the description from the book:

New York, June 6, 2011 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that Leah Holzer has joined the company as vice president of production, reporting to its president of production, Donna Gigliotti, in New York. In her post, Holzer will help manage physical production of such TWC films as the David O. Russell comedy, The Silver Linings Playbook, and The Boys In The Boat, based on a non-fiction book by Daniel James Brown about the University of Washington’s rowing team, which will be directed by Kenneth Branagh. Prior to joining TWC, Holzer spent three years at Bob Shaye & Michael Lynne’s New York production company, Unique Features. While at Unique, she oversaw the feature development of Shiver, the best-selling book by Maggie Stiefvater, as well as thrillers 7th Son, set up at Warner Bros., and Face Blind, a co-production with Mandalay Vision. Upcoming Ya book-to-movie adaptation Shiver, based on Maggie Stiefvater's New York Times bestselling novel, has landed a screenwriter in the form of Nick Pustay (Ramona and Beezus).
Of the movie, Pustay said: "At the core is this heartbreaking love story, between two people who know that their time together is slipping away." Sound familiar?
Tipped to be a rival for The Twilight Saga, Shiver focuses on a teen werewolf romance between human Grace and wolf Sam. Rising temperatures play a big part in the plot, and are sure to be a source of endless shirtless scenes in the movie, a-la Taylor Lautner in New Moon. Whoever is cast as Sam in this movie better say goodbye to his private life, as Shiver already has a dedicated fanbase ready to do its promotional duty.

Washington’s Quileute pack of eight-packed teen werewolves aren’t the only game on the block – some girls don’t mind just regular boys-turned-wolves, no Native American myths and vampiric vendettas necessary. Such is the case with author Maggie Stiefvater’s “Shiver,” a young adult novel that focuses on teen star-crossed lovers separated by fate and cruel magic. Now it looks like Stiefvater’s hit is going to the big screen, sure to capitalize on the popularity of the Twilight franchise.

The Scholastic Press title is described as follows:
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without. Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl.
