The godfather of British animation, celebrated for his short films and the children's TV series Roobarb, has died aged 91
Roobarb, When Custard Got Too Near The Bone

It's a sad coincidence to lose the great animator Bob Godfrey a week after the death of Richard Briers, the man who gave a voice to Roobarb. It was perfect after-school viewing for a generation of 70s kids (and parents) – a great riff on that classic cartoon set-up: a dog and a cat. With its famous wobbly lines and shimmering felt-tip backgrounds, Roobarb had a deceptive charm, set in a world that almost felt like it could have stepped out of a school art class; but of course, it took a master animator to make it look so simple.

No other actor in the long history of horror has been so closely identified with the genre as Boris Karloff, yet he was as famous for his gentle heart and kindness as he was for his screen persona. William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887, in Camberwell, London, England. He studied at London University in anticipation of a diplomatic career; however, he moved to Canada in 1909 and joined a theater company where he was bit by the acting bug. It was there that he adopted the stage name of “Boris Karloff.” He toured back and forth across the USA for over ten years in a variety of low-budget Theater shows and eventually ended up in Hollywood. Needing cash to support himself, Karloff landed roles in silent films making his on-screen debut in Chapter 2 of the 1919 serial The Masked Rider. His big...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

The director of such celebrated kiddy fare as The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, and Coraline is putting together his own production studio in San Francisco. Their first project, Shademaker, looks to frighten children and is already boasting some impressive talent behind the scenes. A job recruitment post for the production dug up by Cartoon Brew says this: “Cinderbiter is a new stop-motion company whose mandate is to make great, scary films for young ‘uns with a small, tight-knit crew who watch each other’s backs. Joining Henry on Cinderbiter’s first production will be veteran team member Eric Leighton and the celebrated production designer, Lou Romano. That’s right – Lou Romano!” Cinderbiter has since been renamed to Shademaker Productions, but clearly the important bit of info in that blurb is Lou Romano. He is a production designer who has worked on Pixar projects like Cars, Up, and...

Henry Selick, who directed such stop-motion classics as Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas, just opened a brand new film studio in San Francisco with hopes of making "great, scary films for young uns with a small, tight-knit crew who watch each others backs," writes Cartoon Brew. Joining Henry on Cinderbiters first production, Shademaker, will be veteran team members Eric Leighton and the celebrated production designer, Lou Romano (art director of Up, Ratatouille and Cars!) Unfortunately, no other details are given, but it's quite exciting to hear of such A-list names in animation creating "scarier" films for children. Yes!

It's a wrap! The Martin Gropius Bau is empty and the final pickups follow. This is a work in progress and readers are invited and welcome to contribute. Presales have returned in reaction to the reduced number of finished films on offer over the past two markets. Presales applies across the board from Us to French and even Italian films. English language films are increasingly coming out of the major non English language territories but local product is impacting sales on Us films internationally. Business was quickly wrapped up but it was done with a healthy number of buys reported. Lower prices have become accepted but the market must have product as this event proved.
