Great casting is one of the things best defined by what it is not. There’s an alchemy to the assembling of a cast — particularly a larger ensemble — that can only be achieved with luck and a sharp eye. And while the 2022-2023 TV season saw plenty of larger-than-life performances and jaw-dropping transformations, these four first-year series managed, in wildly different ways, the same balancing act of star turns and sharply delineated supporting roles. Here are four series worthy of Emmy Award consideration for their feats of casting.

The SAG Awards — like many winter awards split between television and film honors — tend to lend more focus to the cinematic nominees. After all, movies follow the traditional calendar year, the SAG Awards are a key precursor to the Oscars, and, at least until the last few decades, acting on the big screen was seen as a higher artistic expression than popping into people’s living rooms every week. Even in 2023, the bias lingers, as evidenced in everything from how the press covers the morning’s nominations (with many outlets ignoring TV altogether) to how the nominations are announced.
That’s fine. By now, TV fans are used to being the tag-alongs. Culture doesn’t change overnight, and the small screen gets a ceremony all to itself in September. But where things get less fine is within the nominations themselves. This year’s batch of SAG Award nominees aren’t all that shocking.

“There’s such extraordinary rich scenes of material to mine,” reveals Benedict Cumberbatch about his recent limited series “Patrick Melrose” on Showtime. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, “We were always talking about this as being the most ambitious of film-making in television, which is to make television as rich and diverse, as visually-alluring, enthralling and novel and entertaining as you possibly can on the small screen.”
The five-part program is based on the books by British author Edward St. Aubyn, which Cumberbatch discovered years ago. It covers a span of time from the early 1980s to the early 21st century as the title character battles addictions to alcohol and drugs, suicidal thoughts and a tattered family. Co-stars include Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hugo Weaving, Jessica Raine, Holliday Grainger and Blythe Danner.

Following in the footsteps of Peter Bogdanovich’s Stalker and Brian Trenchard-Smith’s Dead End Drive-In, Phil Hawkins’ The Last Showing returns us from our adventures on the moors and in the claustrophobic confines of the jungle to turn the place where we appreciate the filmic dreams conjured up by filmmakers into a nightmarish and hellish place.
If back in the 1980’s Robert Englund rolled over sweet dreams like black storm clouds, then three decades later his eye has turned to the multiplex where we dare to dream and lose ourselves in worlds removed from our reality.
In a special four part feature, writer-director Phil Hawkins, producer Alexandra Baranska and lead actors Finn Jones and Emily Berrington offer a series of youthful perspectives from behind and in front of the camera, before Robert Englund takes the stage to present the cineaste behind the icon.
