Late in the Oscar season, at the moment when voters actually fill in their ballots (the deadline is February 21 at 5 pm), it all comes down to what movies they have actually seen. What did they love the most, and is freshest in their minds? Which film aligns with the zeitgeist, delivering the message that 6,000 voters want to send?
The five directing nominations tend to line up with the strongest Best Picture contenders, although snubbed director nominee Ben Affleck did win Best Picture win for “Argo.” However, that underdog story became a narrative in itself that drove “Argo” to the win.
This year, the narratives include the aftermath of#OscarsSoWhite and the election of Donald J. Trump. Which will stick?
Here’s how the Best Director and Best Picture races are shaking out.

The biggest night in Hollywood calls for a big menu to match.
Following the 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26, stars like Viola Davis, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will dine on more than 50 dishes created by chef Wolfgang Puck at the Oscars Governors Ball official after party.
On Thursday, media members were treated to a sampling of the hors d’oeuvres, which include old favorites like Puck’s black truffle chicken pot pie, served in individual ramekins and topped with a buttery buff pastry; baked macaroni and cheese and smoked salmon served on Oscar statuette-shaped cracker.

He replaces Benjamin Walker in Paul Currie’s “2:22″ and is in talks to co-star in Jason Zada’s “The Forest”
Michiel Huisman from “Game of Thrones” and “Orphan Black” has landed the lead role opposite Teresa Palmer in the psychological thriller “2:22” and he’s also in talks to co-star alongside Natalie Dormer in Focus Features’ supernatural thriller “The Forest,” multiple individuals familiar with both projects have told TheWrap.

Paul Currie is directing “2:22” from an original script by Todd Stein that was later revised by Nathan Parker (“Moon”) and Currie.

• Natalie Dormer is set to star in Lava Bear Films and Phantom Four's The Forest, Entertainment Weekly has confirmed. Jason Zada is directing from a script rewritten by Sarah Cornwell and Nick Antosca that was based on an original idea by David S. Goyer. Set in the Aokigahara forest at the base of Mt. It’s a rare off year for Pixar, with no full-length feature in theaters until next summer. But Disney recently shared an adorable clip from Lava, the short that was slated to debut in front of The Good Dinosaur—before that movie was delayed from May 2014 to November 2015. As you can see, Lava is the story of a singing Hawaiian volcano, named Uku, who is looking for love.
The name Uku evokes the ukelele—the popular Hawaiian guitar-like instrument that practically scores the state’s sunsets and seduces millions of mainland tourists every year. The late Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s strummed a uke,...

It's been a busy day already in Comic-Con's Ballroom 20. We welcomed Jack Bauer back for "24." We tolerated 45 minutes of "Under the Dome" discussion. We watched "Scorpion," a.k.a. "Katherine McPhee: Nerd Wrangler," which was surprisingly well-received by the crowd. Now, after some quality time with Adelaide Kane and "Reign," it's time for the panel most of the crowd has been waiting to see... "Community" is back... 2:10 p.m. Our panel today will be creator Dan Harmon and Ep Chris McKenna, along with Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Dino Stamatopoulos. And, once again, there may be guest appearances. Of course, I predicted guest appearances for "24," but they let us down. 2:17 p.m. We begin with a sizzle reel from the first five "Community" seasons. Season 4 is acknowledged only with a clip of the characters holding their breath to avoid a plume of noxious gas. After the fifth season.

There is either a couple of football fans or Jerry Maguire/Moneyball with this year’s most liked unproduced screenplay. Close to 300 hundred film executives provided with the Black List creators a top ten of their favorite screenplays of the year and the consensus first overall pick (with 65 votes) comes from the recently featured in Variety (10 Screenwriters to Watch 2012) tandem of Rajiv Joseph & Scott Rothman and their drama which has nothing to do with enlisting in the armed forces. Draft Day – about the day in the life of a fictitious Buffalo Bills Gm appears to currently be in turnaround — which only means I expect to see this greenlight perhaps a little later than sooner – worth noting: top spot almost guarantees that the film will indeed go into production (2006, 2010 and 2011 are the exceptions.) Among the more alluring logline subjects we find on the list, I’d be keen on reading the...
