“Go as a River,” the emotional and epic debut novel from author Shelley Read, has landed with content producers Fifth Season and Mazur Kaplan for a film adaptation.
Fifth Season, formerly known as Endeavor Content, will produce the project alongside Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan. Released in 2023, the book became an instant national bestseller and topped the Sunday Times list in the United Kingdom.
Compared to American sagas like “The Four Winds” and “Where the Crawdads Sing,” the backdrop for Read’s work is the wild beauty of mid-century Colorado. The coming-of-age story follows a resilient young woman whose life is changed forever by one chance encounter. Inspired by true events surrounding the destruction of the town of Iola in the 1960s, “Go as a River” is not only a story of deeply held love in the face of hardship and loss, but of finding courage, friendship, and, finally, home―where least expected.

Prologue
At the start of the 1950s, in the suburbs of Elizabeth, N.J., a nearly teenage Judy Blume found herself at odds with the rhythms of her body.
She hadn’t inherited her Aunt Gert’s large breasts.
And she hadn’t yet started her period.
She had discovered the joys of self-stimulation, but she was suffering from a lack of privacy.
There were consolations along the way. Her friends had bigger chests than hers, sure, but they were kind and honest, and all just as keen as she was to discuss things like masturbation, even if they hadn’t learned the word yet. And her monthly bleeds did eventually come. But more on that later.
Chapter 1
In the courtyard café of Books & Books, a long-standing indie shop in Miami, a bespectacled man takes notice as I scrawl some last-minute thoughts in my notebook. “Are you writing the next great American novel?...

Few would argue that Rosamund Pike stole the show in David Fincher’s psychological thriller Gone Girl, portraying an unhinged sociopath that still sends shivers down our spines to this day. Canadian author Harrison died earlier this year, shortly before the publication of The Silent Wife. The novel has gone on to receive overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and readers.
Kidman's Grace of Monaco was recently delayed until 2014 to allow director Olivier Dahan more time to complete the Grace Kelly biopic.
The film was originally scheduled to debut on November 27. It will instead arrive at an unspecified date in spring 2014. Watch...

A bunch of script deals have happened this week, most for films where the storyline is being kept secret. Here's a quick breakdown with the help of Deadline and Variety.

Warner Bros. Pictures have picked up Kelly Oxford's spec script "Son Of A Bitch". The raucous comedy is about a young stoner who tries to maintain her popular party image even after discovering she’s pregnant.

Paul Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan are following the growing trend of nabbing film rights to books that haven’t even hit shelves yet, as Deadline reports the duo will be transforming Jean Zimmerman‘s The Orphan Master into a feature film.
Although the book doesn’t hit until June, the plot does sound pretty intriguing. Check it out below (via Amazon):
It’s 1663 in the tiny, hardscrabble Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, now present-day southern Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking into the mysterious state of affairs are a quick-witted twenty-two-year-old trader, Blandine von Couvering, herself an orphan, and a dashing British spy named Edward Drummond.
Suspects abound, including the governor’s wealthy nephew, a green-eyed aristocrat with decadent tastes; an Algonquin trapper who may be possessed by a demon that turns people into cannibals; and the colony’s own corrupt and conflicted orphanmaster. Both...

Know what would rule? If The Orphan Master was actually a sequel to Orphan and featured a mad scientist who's hellbent on achieving world domination by deploying an army of Communist little folk disguised as children who sound like Dracula into the adoption world. We need to find a writer like yesterday!
While what we're talking about here isn't anywhere near as cool as that would be, it could end up kicking some ass of its own.
Deadline is reporting that producers Paul Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan have optioned film rights to Jean Zimmerman’s The Orphan Master. The historical serial-killer thriller, set in the New Amsterdam of 1633, will be published by Viking on June 19th.

Kate Winslet is attached to star in director Kenneth Branagh's "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society," TheWrap has confirmed. The pairing for Fox 2000's drama-romance marks a reunion for Winslet and Branagh, who previously teamed for 1996's "Hamlet." "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is adapted by Don Roos ("Marley & Me") from the 2008 bestselling novel by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. Save for a few exceptions here or there, I don’t normally pay a lot of attention to what roles an actor ends up taking — unless they’re crashing and burning, a la Matthew McConaughey a couple of years ago. But Kate Winslet — thanks to, of course, being a terrific actress who almost never makes a bad choice — is one of those exceptions.
Hence my interest in Variety‘s story, which tells us that she’ll star for Kenneth Branagh in Fox 2000′s romance, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The story, based on the novel by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows — and adapted for the screen by Don Roos — is set in post-wwii London and centers on “a magazine columnist who enters into a correspondence with a man from Guernsey, and learns how the islanders used a book group during the war as cover to outwit their German occupiers.

Winslet previously played Ophelia in Branagh's Hamlet in 1996. Don Roos adapted the Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows book, which is officially described as follows: January 1946: writer Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a stranger, a founding member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. And so begins a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German occupation, and of a society as extraordinary as its name. Kenneth Branagh may have found his first directing gig since Thor. Variety reports that 20th Century Fox is circling the director to helm The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Dan Roos penned the script for the film, which will be produced by Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan.
The film is based on the Publishers Weekly and New York Times bestseller by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer. Tale has been described "as a love story set in London and on the island of Guernsey shortly after WWII." Branagh is great with directing historical period films, so this is a great news. He will next be seen on the big screen as Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.
I would've loved to see him direct the Thor sequel, but am content known that he will be directing a project like this. What are your thoughts?

Ok, this could be yet another novel adaptation, but if you’re fan of romantic stories, then I’m sure you’ll be happy to hear that Helen Simonson‘s novel titled Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand is coming to the big screen.
Producers Paula Mazur, Mitchell Kaplan and Kevin McCormick have acquired screen rights to the whole thing, and according to the latest reports, Jack Thorne will be in charge for adaptation.
Simonson’s novel, published last year, centers on an English widower who’s mourning the loss of his younger brother amid a growing friendship with the Pakistani widow of the local food shop owner in a countryside village.
Thanks to Variety we know that project is being developed at Mazur Kaplan Co. and Warner Bros-based Langley Park Pictures, which McCormick launched last year. Check out the rest of this report for a novel description.
