Many DC-based projects are currently in development. While attention is often on James Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Superman,’ we shouldn’t overlook the Elseworlds series, which includes ‘The Batman’ film series and other upcoming projects.
Before the Dceu officially became the Dcu, J.J. Abrams was collaborating with Ta-Nehisi Coates on a black-led Superman movie. Despite not hearing much about the movie for a while, a fan asked Gunn on Threads if it was still in active development, and Gunn confirmed that it was.
Of course, this movie is expected to be released as part of the Elseworlds label, which includes DC-based “alternative universe” projects like Mat Reeves’ ‘The Batman,’ the upcoming ‘The Penguin’ show, and ‘The Joker,’ among others.
When James Gunn assumed control of the Dcu, he opted to cancel ‘Man of Steel 2’ and reboot the ‘Superman’ franchise with a younger actor in ‘Superman: Legacy’ (now titled ‘Superman’). However,...

There are plenty of DC-based projects currently in development, and while all eyes are on Gunn’s Dcu and his upcoming ‘Creature Commandos’ & ‘Superman’ we occasionally forget that Elseworlds, which ‘The Batman’ film series and several other upcoming projects are a part of, are doing their own thing.

A group of authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, were dealt an arguably expected setback in a copyright infringement case against OpenAI. On Monday, Feb. 12, a federal judge threw out some, but not all of the claims contained in the lawsuit, which alleges OpenAI’s ChatGPT program was trained on copyrighted books.
The ruling mirrors a decision in a separate case brought by some of the same author plaintiffs (including Silverman) against Meta over how it trains its artificial intelligence language models. Like Meta, OpenAI had asked a judge...

A federal judge has dismissed most of a lawsuit brought by Sarah Silverman, Ta-Nehisi Coates and other authors against OpenAI over the use of copyrighted books to train its generative artificial intelligence chatbot, marking another ruling from a court questioning core theories of liability advanced by creators in the multifront legal battle.
U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin, in an order issued on Feb. 12, refused to allow claims for vicarious copyright infringement, negligence and unjust enrichment to proceed against the Sam Altman-led firm. Following in the footsteps of another judge overseeing an identical suit against Meta, Martinez-Olguin rejected one of the authors’ main claims that every answer generated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an infringing work made possible only by information extracted from copyrighted material.
The authors failed to cite “any particular output” that is “substantially similar — or similar at all — to their books,” the court explained. They were given leave to amend,...

James Gunn is answering fan questions about the DC Universe, including J.J. Abrams’ Superman project.
The DC Studios co-head took to Threads to interact with his fans and confirmed that Abrams’ Superman Elseworld film was still in development.
In 2021, it was reported that Abrams was producing a Superman reboot with Ta-Nehisi Coates attached as a writer. No plot for the film was revealed, but this Superman would exist in an alternate universe, not the same one that Gunn is developing for Superman Legacy.
David Corenswet is set to be the next Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan cast as Lois Lane. A fan asked the filmmaker if Corenswet did a wardrobe test with the Superman costume and Gunn gave a little insight of the process.
“Yes, everyone who screen tested was screen tested in the previous [Superman] suit (although David had a hard time fitting as he’s so tall!

Four days after the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attacks in Israel, WME invited Steve Leder, the rabbi from Wilshire Boulevard Temple, to visit the agency’s Beverly Hills headquarters. He came to provide comfort for employees reeling after the worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Although the event was not mandatory and Leder’s speech was considered secular, several staffers voiced complaints, which made their way to WME co-chairmen Richard Weitz and Christian Muirhead. Instead of caving, WME invited Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to speak to the agency on Nov. 1. Greenblatt didn’t mince words, according to those in attendance, calling out the Writers Guild of America for refusing to issue a statement after the Hamas attacks.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist. This article also contains major spoilers for "The Equalizer 3."The original 1985 TV series "The Equalizer," starring Edward Woodward, was part of a notable trend in television from the '70s and '80s. Multiple shows at the time were about dangerous, mysterious, lawless drifters who traveled from town to town seeking out justice and applying violence where it might be needed. The trend included shows like "Kung Fu," "Then Came Bronson," "The A-Team," "The Incredible Hulk," and a little later, "Renegade." Robert McCall was an ex-military man who had a talent for finding people in distress and helping them — violently — as the situation required.
In 2014, filmmaker Antoine Fuqua adapted "The Equalizer" to the big screen, casting Denzel Washington in the role of Robert McCall.

When it was announced that Peter Safran and James Gunn were taking over as co-CEOs of DC Studios and were working on a brand-new slate of films to fill out the new Dcu, fans were assuming that meant the death of every other project that was being developed prior. This included the highly-publicized ‘Superman’ film being produced by J.J. Abrams and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

If you're a big fan of DC Comics - and the movies and TV series inspired by them - it's a bit of a confusing time. DC Studios is still planning on releasing "The Flash," "Blue Beetle," and "Aquaman 2" this year, but after that, the universe is undergoing a bit of a hard reboot under the direction of new co-chair and CEO of DC Studios James Gunn.
Gunn - who also helmed the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films for Marvel - and Peter Safran joined the company as its new leaders in November 2022, and in January, they announced a new slate of film and TV projects they're calling "chapter one" of the new DC universe. Their plans include a movie titled "Superman: Legacy," which Gunn himself will be writing and directing. But some fans have worried that means a previously announced Superman movie from Ta-Nehisi Coates and J. J. Abrams won't be happening anymore.

The Reign of the Supermen is coming! Maybe. As James Gunn prepares to officially close up his tenure in the MCU with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, attention is increasingly turning toward his next directorial effort, and not just because it’s his first as co-head of DC Studios. Superman: Legacy brings a new Man of Steel to the DC Universe, and pushes Gunn into unfamiliar territory.
But before Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC’s movie efforts, WB was already in the process of developing a Superman movie, a project from J. J. Abrams, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, that would feature a Black Superman. Most assumed that Abrams and Coates’s project was canceled when it was not included in Gunn’s announcement of the upcoming Dcu slate. But in a recent conversation with io9, Gunn confirms that Superman: Legacy does not negate Abrams and Coates’ project.

Zendaya is now regarded as one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars. However, when Marvel announced the actor would play a pivotal role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, toxic fans of the series voiced their racially inflected anger about the decision. Zendaya received support from many people, notably Peter Parker himself. Before Homecoming’s release, Tom Holland praised his co-star’s abilities as an actor and as a woman whom nonsensical detractors couldn’t deter.

We start with a dungeon buried under layers of snow. The camera takes in the frosty landscape; a blizzard blurs our vision. We hear the clank of metal chains meeting concrete floors before seeing the dour-looking figure being ushered into a cell. He is confident — cocky, even — about his new mates. A smooth-faced man with searching blue eyes knits a sweater in one corner. A scruffy woman, wearing a perpetual frown, inhales a potato in the other. Arrogance and unfamiliarity make for a deadly combo. When the new cellmate says the wrong thing, his head swiftly hits the concrete. Quite the brutal opening for a film that’s ultimately such a jovial adventure.

J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot banner have teamed up with Warner Bros. for the feature adaptation of Billy Summers, a very recent Stephen King novel that was published in 2021.
Appian Way will also produce the project, which is being written by Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.

At a press event on Monday, January 30th, new DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran welcomed media to the Warner Bros. lot to the future of the new DC Universe. The new direction includes a fresh Superman film written by Gunn, a new introduction to the Batman family, a Wonder Woman TV prequel series, and much more.
Gunn and Safran met with a writer’s room that included Drew Goddard (The Martian), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), Christina Hobson, Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Tom King. “We sat down in a room for a few days and we started to bash out what the basic overall plan could be,” said Gunn. “Not so much that it ties your wrists, but enough that we know what the basic story is, where we’re going. And it’s something that we’ll continue to do.”

After weeks of chatter and rumor, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran have finally unveiled 10 different projects that compose the first chapter of a long-term, interconnected universe of movies and shows based on the DC comics characters. Among them: new Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Swamp Thing feature films, as well as new series built around the Green Lantern, the origins of Wonder Woman’s birthplace, and one centered around Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller character.
These new projects, formally unveiled on Tuesday after a Monday press conference and presentation, form part of the DC Universe (Dcu). Each film and series is currently in various states of development and will either be theatrically released features via Warner Bros. or HBO Max series, set to roll out over a span of two to three years. Holy unified cinematic universe, Batman!
Three months after James Gunn and Peter Safran officially started running the newly created DC Studios within Warner Bros. Discovery, the co-chiefs have announced the first 10 film and TV titles within the rebooted DC Universe.
On Monday, Gunn and Safran met with press on the Warner Bros. studio lot to present what they said was the first part of Chapter 1 of the Dcu, which they are calling “Gods and Monsters.”
The projects run the gamut. There are titles based on marquee DC heroes — including the previously announced Superman feature written by Gunn, now officially titled “Superman: Legacy,” a Batman and Robin movie, a Wonder Woman prequel series and a Green Lantern mystery series — as well as titles featuring lesser known characters, including Booster Gold and Swamp Thing. The hierarchy of Supermen is getting more confusing by the minute, but given the current state of the DC universe, that shouldn't really come as a surprise. At the moment, everything seems to be in flux over at Warner Bros., especially when it comes to their crime-fighting crusaders. The recent appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-heads of DC Studios means that its superhero slate is being almost entirely remade — in fact, we recently learned that they've settled on a lineup that will likely be announced in 2023. So while we continue scratching our heads about the oft-delayed titles still expected to hit theaters at some point soon, big moves are happening behind-the-scenes.
The question currently on everyone's mind centers around none other than DC headliner, Superman. Who will don the cape and Clark Kent glasses next? For a while, Henry Cavill seemed like the obvious answer — he...

It's a question that has dogged the decision-makers in charge of DC films for well over a decade now: How do you make Superman relevant to audiences today?
On one hand, it's apparent why this has provoked so much angst and handwringing throughout the years. Despite a perfectly-cast Henry Cavill and a filmmaker in Zack Snyder who seemed perfectly suited to modernize the boy scout, mainstream audiences never quite warmed up to this specific big-screen portrayal as established in the 2013 reboot "Man of Steel." The somewhat divisive foundation was further compounded by the dark and downright alienating "Batman v Superman," and only belatedly redeemed in "Zack Snyder's Justice League." On the other, well, this task couldn't possibly be as difficult as the previous regime in charge of Warner Bros. made it out to be, right? In the years since, DC's flagship character has been placed on the backburner — a tacit...

Things are heating up in Metropolis, as DC Studios co-head James Gunn has announced he is writing a new feature film about Superman. In step with the new project, Gunn has also revealed that Henry Cavill will not return as the hero.
“Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year,” the director-turned-label-chief tweeted Wednesday evening.
“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”

James Gunn is making his first big move at DC and will pen a Superman movie.
The project will focus on the younger years of the hero, and thus he will be played by a new actor rather than Superman veteran Henry Cavill. Gunn and his DC Studios co-chair and co-ceo Peter Safran recently met with Cavill to share the news, and to discuss ideas for potentially collaborating in the future on something else, perhaps a different role.
At this stage, Gunn is merely writing the script, though he could potentially direct depending on where his services are needed at DC Studios, according to insiders.

Patty Jenkins resurfaced on social media Tuesday and denied walking away from “Wonder Woman 3.”
Last week, multiple insiders told TheWrap Jenkins had walked off the “Wonder Woman 3” project after rejecting studio notes on the treatment she had submitted. TheWrap stands by its reporting.
“When there started being backlash about WW3 not happening, the attractive clickbait false story that it was me that killed it or walked away started to spread,” Jenkins said in a statement posted on Twitter. “This is simply not true. I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding that there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”

James Gunn Says Superman Is a ‘Huge Priority’ for the New DC Universe: ‘If Not the Biggest Priority’
As rumors surge over what route the DC Universe will take under the watch of its new leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran, Gunn took to social media to confirm to fans that Superman is one of his biggest priorities.
“Hey James, please tell us if we are gonna see a Superman?” a fan asked Gunn on Twitter. “We’ve been starved of the greatest comic book character on the big screen for ages!”
“Yes of course,” Gunn replied. “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”
When asked by another fan to respond to the claim that “James Gunn does not like Henry Cavill,” Gunn answered, “Sure: false.”
Gunn’s responses came after a chaotic few days for the DC Universe. News broke that Patty Jenkins walked away from “Wonder Woman 3” after refusing to make studio-requested changes to her script treatment. Speculation also circulated that potential...

It’s been barely two months since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-captains of the newly reconfigured DC Studios and, even though the announcement of the pair’s ascendance was widely acclaimed, the ongoing turmoil associated with the DC cinematic universe is rearing its head again.
Following the initial, shocking report that one of the lingering projects left over from the old regime, Wonder Woman 3, had been canceled (“in its current incarnation” according to THR) and director/co-writer Patty Jenkins had departed the franchise, more details have come to light about the situation.
According to The Wrap and confirmed by Den of Geek’s own sources, Jenkins quit Wonder Woman 3 after refusing to accept notes from Warner Bros. Pictures heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. Hollywood was stunned by the news this week that Warner Bros Discovery would not move forward with “Wonder Woman 3,” but in fact it was Patty Jenkins, who directed the first two films in the superhero series, who walked off the project after rejecting studio notes on her treatment, multiple individuals told TheWrap.
Jenkins’ exit came as James Gunn and Peter Safran have been getting settled into their new roles as co-CEOs of DC Films and are busy plotting out an extensive multi-year plan for DC films, TV shows and games that they will present to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week.
Although Gunn and Safran have been given a mandate to reshape the DC landscape, Warner Bros. Discovery has “ongoing enterprises” that “nobody was going to mess with,” according to one insider. This includes Matt Reeves writing the sequel to “The Batman,” J.J. Abrams’ Black-led “Superman” from Ta-Nehisi Coates,...

It's hard to imagine even today, that Marvel would green light a movie where Black and brown heroes battle and vanquish white villains as its central conflict. But director Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther" franchise seems to be inevitably drawing us closer to such an epic, anticolonial spectacle.

In "Wakanda Forever," we get pretty close to diving into that narrative. Early in the movie, Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda attends a Un meeting. The white west, represented here by the US and France, tries to bully her into sharing Wakanda's precious vibranium, the material that powers the previously hidden and technologically advanced African nation. But Queen Ramonda is not one to be trifled with. She rejects the idea that vibranium is dangerous, declaring that the nation states in front of her are where the true danger lies.

When characters have been around for decades, a number of people tend to leave their creative fingerprints on them. For example, Captain America was created in 1940 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Timely Comics. He was a World War II soldier that went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the fight against the Axis powers, particularly the Nazis. Later, when the company transitioned to Marvel, Stan Lee brought Cap into the modern day in 1963's "The Avengers" #4 as part of the popular super team. From there, a number of extremely talented people like Ed Brubaker, Mark Gruenwald, Roger Stern, Mark Waid, and Ta-Nehisi Coates have crafted character-defining stories for the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. But as a character goes from creator to creator, they may change slightly. While it's certainly possible for people (fictional or otherwise) to be multifaceted in their personalities, those changes...

It seems like we have this same exact conversation every time a new Marvel movie is released. We hear that an LGBTQ character is appearing in a film and anticipate them being an integral part of the plot, even if their powers aren't directly tied to their sexuality or gender. However, almost every single time this happens, they turn out to be easily discarded or ignored altogether. Perhaps they pull their partner in for one quick kiss, shot at a distance, and that's all you really see of them. It begs the question, why even say that a character is LGBTQ if you're not going to feature them at all?
It turns out that you'll have to ask that question again after you see "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." While it probably isn't surprising that the Dora Milaje officer Ayo (Florence Kasumba...

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s memories of late actor Chadwick Boseman still leave him with overwhelming emotions whenever he talks about the late actor.
The director got emotional as he recalled his last conversation with the ‘Black Panther’ star, reports aceshowbiz.com.
In the first episode of ‘Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcast’, the filmmaker said he just finished writing the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ script about T’Challa grieving the loss of time from the five-year “Avengers: Endgame” Blip when he reached out to Boseman.
“I just finished (the script). My last conversation with him was calling him asking him if he wanted to read it before I got notes from the studio. That was the last time we spoke,” he said.
“He passed maybe a couple of weeks after I finished.”
When the interviewer asked for details about Boseman’s response, Coogler took a moment to compose himself.

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a new Superman movie - maybe! A "Man of Steel" sequel is in the works at Warner Bros. Discovery, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In an Oct. 17 article discussing the company's plans for the DC Comics Universe on screen going forward, the outlet revealed that the company has an "intense desire" to bring back Henry Cavill as Superman in a project that would "essentially be 'Man of Steel 2.'" The movie is being produced by Charles Roven and currently looking for a writer. Popsugar reached out to Warner Bros. Discovery for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Cavill debuted as Superman, aka Clark Kent, in 2013's "Man of Steel," the only solo film for his version of the character. He reprised the role officially in 2016's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," 2017's "Justice League," and 2021's "Zack Snyder's Justice League.

First up, let’s talk Superman. Fans have been campaigning for Henry Cavill to return to the role for some time, and Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson wants to make it happen. We won’t discuss what could be the worst-kept secret in Hollywood. Johnson went to...

As Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and others in his coven of executives continue to slice and dice through DC properties like Deathstroke on a bender, a report from Variety suggests that DC’s Titans and Doom Patrol are in danger of being canceled. Both shows have new seasons hitting HBO Max later this year, but after that, who knows? While Titans and Doom Patrol are beloved by a sizable portion of the DC fandom, both are considered niche programs, and the new guard may have a difficult time justifying their expense.
Fear of Titans and Doom Patrol getting shelved is intense as DC fans have watched one project after another disappear over the past few weeks. Warner Bros. Discovery already canceled plans to develop a Strange Adventures anthology show with Kevin Smith and has done away with Wonder Twins, a movie starring Riverdale‘s Kj Apa and Young Sheldon‘s Isabel May.
