The successful trend continues as of today, with Mediaset España and Alea Media series “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” whose Seasons 1, 2 and 3 have reached the top 10 of most watched non -English TV fiction shows on Netflix for the period March 4-10, 2024, cumming 41.6 million hours viewed.

He’s become one of Spain’s most successful auteur directors of big audience hits. Now director-writer-producer Alex de la Iglesia and producing partner, the actor-producer Carolina Bang (“The Last Circus”), have turned to wayward soccer players for their latest TV outing, HBO Max show “Headless Chickens.”
The starting point for this upcoming Spanish series is curiosity, Bang explained at an afternoon Q&a session at the Berlinale Series Market on Tuesday scheduled in the Next from Spain strand.
“Alex and I don’t like soccer very much but we have a lot of curiosity about the industry,” said Bang. “You have a lot of young people that became very rich very quickly. It destroys your head.”
Indeed, a teaser for “Headless Chickens” featured a beautiful footballer parading in a big, white fluffy coat through a nightclub with women falling at his feat. The swagger was amusing.

Spanish producers taking part in a Spanish content showcase at the Berlinale Series Market on Monday debated what was jokingly referred to as the “devil’s bargain” offered by major streaming platforms that are propelling Spanish shows around the globe often at the cost of IP ownership.
Álex de la Iglesia of Madrid-based production powerhouse Pokeepsie Films said the company for years retained the IP of films that played in local cinemas. “We assumed there was no other model. Now, maybe we lose our IP, but suddenly our movies are in the houses of the whole planet. Maybe you have to sell your soul to these ‘diabolical’ platforms,” he joked. “But I can only say that working with the devil is worth it.,” he added.
De la Iglesia added that Spain’s production sector was running hot. “We are working a lot.” Spain, he added, had never seen so much production taking place.

This year’s Berlinale Series Market kicks off Monday as Spanish series “The Snow Girl,” a missing girl suspense thriller produced by Spain’s Atípica Films, has attracted huge heat for Netflix, punching 101.7 million hours watched in its first three weeks. Doing so, it ranked as the streamer’s No. 1 non-English show in the world over Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.
In all, Spain has more shows and movies in Netflix’s all time non-English Top 10s than any other country in the world, seven to France’s two, for example.
Spain, it could be argued, has cracked online. But its drama series industry wants to ring more options.

February 9 Update: Bob Iger has wasted little time making his mark less than three months into his latest stint as Disney CEO, announcing the company will operate under three core segments – Disney Entertainment, ESPN, and Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.
Iger said Disney will implement 5.5bn in cuts – of which 3bn will cover non-sports content – and has authorised approximately 7,000 job losses across the company, which is roughly 3 of the global workforce. “I don’t make these decisions lightly,” he said in Wednesday’s first quarter 2023 earnings webcast.

Off the heels of a world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he scooped the Proxima Special Jury Prize, writer-director Eduardo Casanova arrives in Montreal to screen his latest feature “La Piedad” (“La Pietà”) as part of the Queer Genre Cinema Spotlight at Fantasia. The screening marks its North American debut.
The film offers a delightfully bizarre peek into the lives of manic and obsessive Libertad (Ángela Molina), a mother with an insatiable desire to be needed, and her son, Mateo (Manel Llunell), who warily leans into her toxic trappings as the pair become increasingly entwined.
A personal story unfurls in tandem with a poignant subplot that likens their familial relationship to that of a populace and its dictator, showing that those in control of a mere few can use propaganda just as readily as a sadistic leader to manipulate their wards into submission.

In late April, Banijay Iberia moved waves by taking an equity stake in Alex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s Pokeespsie Films, with the aim of scaling up on its Spanish-language high-end original series and fiction production.
Via Shine Iberia, Banijay is also producing biopic “Bosé,” one of Vis’ biggest Spanish-language plays for Paramount Plus, about singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé.
Best known for its entertainment formats – though it does own Barcelona’s Diagonal TV, producer of hit Netflix historical sagas “Cathedral of the Sea” and “Heirs to the Land” and Dlo Producciones, behind “Tell Me Who I Am” and “El Immortal,” – Banijay is now moving to strengthen its position in scripted in the Iberian market and, via it, across the globe.
That is seen at Conecta Fiction, which runs June 21-24 in Toledo, Spain, where Banijay will have one of the biggest presences of any global company at the TV co-production forum,...

Things got personal at Cannes Market’s Fantastic 7 showcase this year, highlighting upcoming genre projects selected by seven festivals including Spain’s Sitges, Bucheon in South Korea, Cairo, Guadalajara in Mexico, SXSW and Toronto, as well as Whanau Marama New Zealand Intl. Film Festival.

In his latest film “Venus,” presented by Sitges, he will combine elements of survival drama and modern witchery. Starring Ester Expósito, it’s produced by Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang.

Alex de la Iglesia’s latest production, feature “Four’s a Crowd,” is being brought onto the Cannes Film Market by Filmax, which has acquired international sales rights.
Described by Filmax as a “wild romantic comedy,” “Four’s a Crowd” turns on Julian, a 50-year-old divorced man who starts to use an app to share his car with strangers and most especially Lorena, a young woman with whom Julian would like to share much more.
He’s about to open up to Lorena when he’s lumbered unexpectedly with a fourth passenger, possibly the most annoying person on the planet, who sparks a radical change in the course of events.
“Four’s a Crowd” is “a very personal reflection on human joy and misery, where nothing is as it seems,” Filmax said in a statement.

HBO Max has commissioned a second season of Álex de Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría’s mystery horror 30 Coins.
Principal photography will begin later this month on the eight-parter, which will air next year.
The series will pick up from the end of season one, which dropped on the platform in late 2020. Most of the people of Pedraza have lost their minds, confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena lies in a Madrid hospital bed in a coma; Paco, shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror grows around them, the group of heroes must face a new enemy.
“If the first season was the gathering of the storm clouds, the second will be the maelstrom preceding an epic storm,” said de la Iglesia.
30 Coins stars Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner and Miguel Ángel Silvestre. Executive Producers for HBO Max are Steve Matthews, Miguel Salvat and Antony Root.

The Spanish filmmaker, in conjunction with Sony Pictures International Productions and Amazon Prime Video, is serving as producer and art director on a series of horror and suspense flicks. Sony Pictures International Productions and Pokeepsie Films (the company run by Álex de la Iglesia and actress Carolina Bang), in association with Amazon Prime Video, have signed a deal to create The Fear Collection, a new brand and seal of quality for various genre features that will be made under the creative supervision of de la Iglesia, the director of The Bar, who will serve as producer and/or director on them all. “It’s an ambitious project that I’ve had dragging around for years. The concept consists of creating a series of films that unfold in a horror universe that is not restrained by time: the characters will have to grapple with supernatural forces that threaten humanity. The idea is to shoot.
Target to produce two “Cosmic horror” films a year.
Sony Pictures International Productions is getting into business with Basque Country genre filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia to create horror and thriller anthology The Fear Collection.
The studio will work with de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang’s production company Pokeepsie Films on the projects, which Sony Pictures Entertainment Iberia will distribute theatrically in Spain, followed by a debut on Amazon Prime. It is understood Sony will retain distribution rights outside Spain.
De la Iglesia will produce and/or direct each project and said the goal is to produce two films a year.

In the mood for a Spanish-language psycho-drama? Shrew’s Nest is another Shudder exclusive and is a fun jaunt into the weird world of sisters Montse (Macarena Gómez) and Nia (Nadia de Santiago).
Montse and Nia live in an apartment in Madrid in the 1950s. Montse has raised Nia alone since their mother died in childbirth and their father disappeared some years afterwards. Whilst Nia has an outgoing and sunny disposition, Montse is a highly strung, paranoid agoraphobic, suffering crippling panic attacks if she so much as takes a step outside their home and is reliant on doses of morphine supplied by a friend and customer of her dress-tailoring business that she runs from the apartment.

Compared to their American equivalents, Spanish imports rock a vibe that can’t be duplicated. Just check any of Telemundo’s saucy daytime dramas versus our straight-faced network soap operas, and you’ll be treated to silliness abound. But that’s on a nationally televised level – graduate to big-budget theatrics, and we’re talking productions that are nuttier than a Payday bar (or whatever your favorite peanut-laced treat is).
My Big Night is, without a doubt, one of the more ludicrous ensemble pieces I’ve seen in recent memory, guided by the zany ambition of Álex de la Iglesia (The Last Circus and Witching & Bitching). Are you ready for over-dramatized comedics and a cornucopia of chaos driven by goofy, slapstick maturity? Or, would it be immaturity? Not quite sure. How would you define a subplot where some Fabio-lookin’ pop star has his semen stolen by a Bj-specialist who doesn’t swallow?...

Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia returns with Witching and Bitching, a nod to his particular brand of zany, over-the-top genre comedy that marked some of his better known titles from 1990s, particularly The Day of the Beast (1995). Bigger budgets and a cadre of returning cast members from his filmography make his latest film of a higher pedigree than those roughhewn beginnings, but the director still insists on bloating his running time as an overstuffed extravaganza. As usual, this gilds the energetic exuberance to a desensitizing mass of standout moments rising out of chintzy, cheeseball antics.

On the run after a bank heist, José and Tony need a place to lay low for awhile, especially since a handful of hostages and José’s son are along for the ride. They stop at a small tavern in the countryside, but they would have been better off turning themselves over to the law, as their pitstop is inhabited by a coven of merciless, wicked witches in IFC Midnight’s Witching & Bitching, coming to DVD in the Us on October 14th.
“When a bank heist in the city doesn’t all go according to plan, Jose and Tony find themselves in possession of some hostages and speeding through the mountains of Spain, hoping to quietly slip over the border. Not wanting to give up his custody days to his ex-wife, Jose has also brought his son along for both the robbery and the ride. Little do they know that...

I’ve been hyping Álex de la Iglesia’s Witching & Bitching (Las Brujas De Zugarramurdi) awfully hard around these parts, so it brings me great pleasure to finally announce that I’ve seen the film, I love the film, and I no longer have to fear slinking away with my tail between my legs. Yes, once again De la Iglesia exemplifies why he’s one of the most interesting Spanish filmmakers currently churning out foreign cinema, adopting frantic storytelling much like Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez might dream up. Witches aren’t an easy cult for horror fans to fall in love with, despite being a prolific symbol for scares, but De la Iglesia thrives where most falter. You don’t name your film Witching & Bitching unless you can live up to such brazen, confident titling, and thankfully, the outlandish filmmaker does.
