After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.’
In the battle of the sequels Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil beat Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap last weekend but neither was a match for the third frame of Warner Bros’ juggernaut Joker.
Launching on 60 screens, Universal’s Judy Garland biopic Judy hit a high note while Cinema Live’s Billy Connolly: The Sex Life of Bandages did not generate many laughs or dollars and Icon’s mystery thriller Strange But True bombed.
It was a soft trading weekend at cinemas as the top 20 titles harvested $14.2 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Todd Phillips’ Joker rang up $4.3 million despite falling by 41 per cent, hoisting its total to $28.5 million. The WB/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ production has amassed $738.5 million worldwide: $247.2 million in the Us and $491.3 million internationally, where it now ranks as the fourth biggest DC comics-based blockbuster of all time.

‘Hustlers’ (Photo credit: Stx Films).
Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers is a hit in the Us but the crime caper starring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart and Cardi B was never going to beat the second weekend of Todd Phillips’ blockbuster Joker in Australia.
Meanwhile Ang Lee’s $140 million-budgeted action thriller Gemini Man is shaping as a write-off for Paramount Pictures and co-investors Skydance, Alibaba and Fosun.
Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl maintained a fair clip in its third weekend while two alternate content releases, Nt Live: Fleabag and Metallica & San Francisco Symphony: S&m drew sizable audiences.
The top 20 titles generated $19.2 million last weekend, 13 per cent down on the previous frame, according to Numero.
Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the twisted, disenfranchised clown-for-hire and stand-up comic in 1980s Gotham, Joker rang up $7.4 million, easing by just 24 per cent, hoisting its total to $22 million.

By the way, this whole flooding of the early August marketplace with several wide releases was going on last year at this time, however, it was four wide entries each for the first and second weekend, not five like this year. The only difference is that we had powerful pics like Meg and Crazy Rich Asians rising to the top last August while distributors are largely delivering low budget fare.

Before “The Angry Birds Movie 2” first screened in London, Sony proudly showed off the trailer for the new “Jumanji” movie (“The Next Level”) which the studio is obviously hoping will be its big Christmas hit. That film’s very existence, re-animated by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart et al, proves you can never write off an old franchise or an even older video game — and there’s every chance that the further adventures of the flightless cartoon birds and their green pig adversaries can feather the nest for Sony this summer.
Not that “Angry Birds 2” is a very good film. Let’s not go crazy here. Compared to Disney/Pixar, the work here is rudimentary in terms of artistry, character and script. There are hardly any gags in the dialogue, not even terrible bird-based puns. And as for any wholesome or heart-warming family message, forget it. But that in itself may prove somewhat refreshing,...

Fox Searchlight has set an awards-season release date of Oct. 4 for Natalie Portman’s astronaut drama “Lucy in the Sky.”
Noah Hawley helmed “Lucy in the Sky” in his directorial feature film debut. Portman stars as an astronaut who returns to Earth after an extended time is space and begins an obsessive affair with a fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm. The plot is loosely based on the true story of Nasa astronaut Lisa Nowak, who was arrested in 2007 for the attempted murder of fellow astronaut Colleen Shipman, who was romantically involved with astronaut William Oefelein.

Sony Animation’s The Angry Birds Movie surprised many three years ago by a) not being terrible, and b) actually being quite fun in a disposable way: the zappiest attempt at brand extension this side of The Lego Movie. The sequel tempts fate by pausing the innately funny war between birds and pigs in order to pit both factions against new predators from the neighbouring Eagle Island. Incoming director Thurop van Orman approaches this expanded universe with something of the visual ambition of Pixar’s Brad Bird and a restless, playful spirit reminiscent of the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films. The birds are no longer as irate as they once were, but the franchise appears to have levelled up.
The original itched to get past its origin story and on to pixelating the game’s parrot-slinging.

“For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson — though he reckoned without the Angry Birds making a virtue of that trade. Peace of any kind is in short supply in “The Angry Birds Movie 2,” another breathless, frenetic cartoon escapade derived from the once-ubiquitous video game franchise, and again its manic, catapulting comic energy is more appealing than those origins might suggest. Despite a complete replacement of the first film’s writing and directing teams — with acclaimed, offbeat TV animator Thurop Van Orman brashly taking the reins in his first feature assignment — this second loopy adventure for misfit cardinal Red and his feathered-but-flightless friends maintains the balance of scattergun jokes, candy-coated visuals and cheerfully bird-brained storytelling that raked in $350 million worldwide in 2016.
How close “The Angry Birds Movie 2” comes to matching that figure will depend on how firmly...

The Angry Birds Movie 2 took a flying leap off the Carlton Hotel pier here in Cannes today as part of Sony’s now annual pre-fest promotional stunt to launch a summer title. At the same time, a new scene from the Sony Pictures Animation/Rovio Entertainment sequel was released online.
In Cannes, the irked birds and scheming green piggies banded together this afternoon to fling a stuffed hatchling from the dock using the birds’ signature slingshot. The stunt echoes the themes of the film which sees a new threat emerge that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger and forces the foes to unite against a common enemy. A giant stuffed toy bird was catapulted from a Cannes beachfront pier Monday as Sony used its now traditional pre-festival slot to generate buzz for its new film “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” New footage from the movie dropped right after the stunt.
The first picture made more than $540 million internationally. Voice talent including Josh Gad turned out in Cannes alongside costumed characters as international press – and bemused Cannes sunbathers – looked on for the sequel stunt.
In the new picture, the birds and pigs unite against a common foe, but there is friction between them. “They do not get along, they don’t trust each other,” producer John Cohen told Variety. “It’s not unlike when the Avengers came together for the first time. There are a lot of trust issues.”
The voice cast includes Bill Hader, Awkwafina, Peter Dinklage, and Nicki Minaj.

Exclusive: After hatching a promotional niche with The Angry Birds Movie on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Sony will be back on the Croisette next week to launch the global campaign for its sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2.
Taking place on Monday, this year’s stunt is the latest in a savvy move Sony began with the first film (which went on to gross $352 million worldwide) and has continued since as a means to stake out prime real estate a day ahead of the fest’s official opening. The strategy is to hit during a lull in which the entertainment media is on the ground prepping for the main event — and looking for photo ops.

With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.
The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.
The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. The birds are back in town — well, not yet, but next year’s sequel to The Angry Birds Movie has set its voice cast. Among those joining the avians-vs.-pigs toon franchise from Sony Pictures and Rovio Entertainment are Leslie Jones, Rachel Bloom, Sterling K. Brown, Eugenio Derbez, Zach Woods, Awkwafina and Lil Rel Howery.
Also set for Angry Birds 2 are Dove Cameron, Beck Bennett and Brooklynn Prince. They join returning actors Jason Sudeikis as the temperamental Red; Josh Gad as speedy Chuck; Bill Hader as Leonard, king of the pigs; Danny McBride as the volatile Bomb; and Peter Dinklage as the stentorian voice of the legendary Mighty Eagle.
The sequel is directed by Thurop Van Orman, with co-director John Rice co-directing. Peter Ackerman, whose credits range from 2002’s Ice Age to FX’s Cold War thriller The Americans, is writing the screenplay. David Maisel and Catherine Winder are executive producers.

Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Bill Hader, Danny McBride, and Peter Dinklage are returning as voice cast for Sony Pictures’ “The Angry Birds Movie 2.”
Sony announced last year that it had set a Sept. 20, 2019, release date for “The Angry Birds Movie 2” — coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the hit video game. The studio is re-teaming with Finland-based Rovio Entertainment Ltd. for the animated sequel.
“Angry Birds” grossed a solid $350 million worldwide, including $107 million domestically. The film, directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, was set on an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – except for Red (voiced by Sudeikis), speedy Chuck (Gad), and Bomb (McBride). Hader returns as Leonard, king of the pigs, and Dinklage voices the Mighty Eagle.

“Hold On To That Branch Or Die, Cat!”
Every place-setter episode risks biting off more than it can chew on the way to setting up future adventures. ‘The Stanchurian Candidate’ is fun and lively for the most part, but it never quite has time to land any of its threads in a satisfying place. The opening suggests a Day In the Life plot exploring Stan’s feelings of inadequacy, Dipper’s and Mabel’s adventures with the mind control tie seems like a rehash of the moral question at the center of ‘The Love God’ but without much of a resolution, and the mayoral campaign provides a mix of kooky citizenry, obscure laws, and Stan being Stan that nets most of the episode’s laughs, but the whole mixture fails to synthesize into any kind of point or arc.
