Following last year’s Cult Hero, director Jesse Thomas Cook and writer Tony Burgess are back with their fifth collaboration The Hyperborean which played at this year’s Blood in the Snow Film Festival. And right from the opening animation depicting some fictional strangeness afflicting the nonfictional McClure Arctic Expedition, it’s obvious this is as strange as anything they’ve given us before.
Diana sits at a table in a large conference room with Mr. da Silva and Ms. Ladouceur (Marcia Alderson; Cult Hero), two lawyers and eventually Mr. Denbok, a crisis manager, or spin doctor as they used to be called, who represent her late father Hollis’ (Tony Burgess) corporate interests. Their first question “How did your father die?...

Language is paramount in Pontypool, Bruce McDonald’s Canadian (don’t call it zombie) thriller. The film concerns a shock jock DJ and his pair of female colleagues who manage a radio station over the course of a morning as a word-based pathogen destroys the surrounding community.
Based on the book by Tony Burgess (who also wrote the screenplay), the film is a single location thriller that relies heavily on its small cast and mildly claustrophobic setting. Dialogue and audio flesh out not only the world and the looming threat; it also captures the power and impact of language.
It’s vital that Grant Mazzy (Canadian screen legend Stephen McHattie) is something of a disgrace at the beginning of the film. He’s only recently...

Cult Hero opens with the credits presented as those of a reality TV show called Cult Buster which may have been the film’s original title. Revolving around the exploits of deprogrammer Dale Domazar the season final goes off the rails as not only doesn’t he stop their human sacrifice, but his intervention also results in a mass suicide.
Elsewhere Kallie and her husband Brad are having problems. Brad seems to have lost his vigor and his drive, even worse he dared to buy a painting for the house without getting her approval. So she enrolls him at Master Jagori’s retreat for men.

"When drinking the Kool-Aid, remember to Live, Laugh, Love." An early promo trailer has debuted for an indie film premiering soon at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, titled Cult Hero. This action-packed horror comedy is the latest from the director of Monster Brawl, The Hexecutioners, and Deadsight. Control freak Kallie Jones attempts to rescue her husband from a "wellness center" with the help of a washed-up expert Cult Buster. This cult comedy is about a woman who hires this "Cult Buster" to free her man from a suspected "husband" cult run by Master Jagori, played by Tony Burgess, who has a sinister plan they did not expect. Fantasia describes it as: "With countless gags, lots of gore, and outrageous performances from Barrett and Collins as unlikely partners in cult-busting, Cult Hero bursts off the screen with absurdly nutso energy." Starring Liv Collins, Ry Barrett, Justin Bott, Jessica Vano, and Burgess.

As theaters tentatively start to reopen around the U.S. without the usual glut of studio product to fill their screens, there’s an opportunity for filmmakers who previously might not have edged their way very deeply into U.S. cinemas to find a wider audience. That’s particularly true of Canadian filmmaker Bruce McDonald, whose fantasy crime comedy “Dreamland” is being released by Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures on June 5, day and date with VOD.
McDonald, known for films like “Roadkill,” “Hard Core Logo” and “Pontypool,” which mash up humor with adventure, music or horror — and sometimes all of these — felt that for “Dreamland,” he needed to venture outside the familiar environs of Canada to find the right locale to bring the story to life. The movie, which reunites the director with “Pontypool” novelist and screenwriter Tony Burgess, follows a hitman tasked with obtaining the pinkie finger of...

Fans of Pontypool may rejoice for the beginning of production on Bruce McDonald's latest film, Dreamland. It reunites the director with writer Tony Burgess and star Stephen McHattie. While not the long rumoured sequel to the Canadian cult semiotic zombie film (at one point titled Pontypool Changes), but a totally new story, being tailor made for McHattie's particular character actor genius: You have seen McHattie in a lot of Darren Aronfsky films (including The Fountain and mother!), as Night Owl in Zack Snyder's Watchmen, and as the bad dude in the prologue of David Cronenberg's A History Of Violence. McDonald stated, "Once in a while, in this movie game, we connect with people who are stars – and we are inspired to create just the right movie...

It would seem, at least on paper, that the director of low-budget quasi-wrestling monster movie Monsters Brawl and the (literal) shit-monster movie Septic Man; teaming up the writer of the neo-classic Pontypool for a movie that encapsuates an American gothic vibe would not work. On the one hand you have someone’s whose work is filled with subtlety, on the other… shit-monster (and yes, I know Burgess also penned Septic Man)! Yet somehow, despite some lapses in judgement and a conclusion that falls off the cliff somewhat, The Hexecutioners really works.

Some films are just crap, but Septic Man is literally about it. In the first few minutes you may get to see a lot of human waste, but if truth be told if the movie has a bigger problem than that… it may be slightly constipated.
Jack (Jason David Brown) is a sewage worker who is known to be good at his job. When government official Phil Prosser (Julian Richings) gives him an offer he can’t (or isn’t) allowed to refuse he finds himself investigating problems in the city water system which are leading to a plague of diseases, even death. When he finds the source though he finds himself trapped in the water treatment facility at the mercy of two strange brothers intent on killing him.

Cook produced two more of Burgess' screenplays Hellmouth and Ejecta, so yeah, they are pretty comfortable around each other. Their latest project The Hexecutioners will have its World Premiere at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. We have a collection of stills to share with you, as well as the first trailer. Three years ago Proposition 117 was passed allowing private medical films to conduct assisted suicide procedures. Two disparate young women working for a Rite-to-Die company are dispatched to a remote estate to perform a custom euthanasia ritual, but unwittingly summon the spirits of a death cult that once inhabited the property. In this morning's round-up, we have a Q&A with Casper Van Dien from the supernatural horror film, June. Also: details on Dracula's prop auction, XLrator Media's 24 Hour Rental, a video tribute to Friday the 13th Part VIII called "Voorhees Stomp", a new poster for The Hexecutioners, and release details for Krampus: The Reckoning.
Casper Van Dien Q&A: "June tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice) who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. And though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes, a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow. It’s only when June is sent to live with a new couple, Lily (Pratt) and Dave (Van Dien), that it looks as if things might finally work out. Except this innocent child with the face of an angel is possessed by an ancient, malevolent entity that has hijacked her soul.

The tenth annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival kicks off in a couple weeks and the festival has finally announced the second half of titles for this year’s lineup as well as the Canadian and International shorts. PopOptiq will once again be covering the event so be sure to check back at the end of the month. Here is the press release.
The Hallow (Ireland) Toronto Premiere
Possibly the scariest film in this year’s Toronto After Dark lineup, The Hallow from the producers of Let Us Prey terrified audiences at Sundance on its debut. After a young family move from the big city to a peaceful Irish woodland cottage, their dismissive attitude to folklore legends angers the local townspeople. It’s not long before the family members find themselves in a desperate fight for survival in a prolonged confrontation with some vicious creatures lurking in the forest.

On Friday the festival announced the second half of titles for this year's lineup as well as the Canadian and International shorts. Leading the second wave of titles we have a couple of Canadian features. Trevor Juras' The Interior is just damned good and creepy stuff. Recent Fantastic Fest entry Gridlocked will also return home to Toronto for it's Canadian premiere. There is a smack of the supernatural in this second wave of titles. With Halloween night rapidly approaching, Bruce McDonald’s Hellions sounds like the perfect seasonal watch for a little post-witching-hour entertainment. McDonald previously asserted himself as a cult hero by teaming with Tony Burgess on Pontypool, a tremendously underrated take on zombie movies, and who doesn’t like a good thriller about vengeful trick ‘r treaters, à la Sam from Trick ‘r Treat?
Candy, kills, and shotguns sound like sweet Halloween treats to me, but Hellions is a messy slop of housebound Malickian horror that simply doesn’t deliver. It’s an unfortunate exercise in futilely that never approaches coherency, which will leave most viewers feeling like McDonald gave them dental floss instead of a Kit-Kat this Halloween.
Chloe Rose stars as young Dora Vogel, a high school slacker who discovers she’s pregnant with her boyfriend Jace’s (Luke Bilyk) child at the age of 17. She struggles to find a...

Sneak Peek footage from the science fiction horror feature "Ejecta", directed by Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele, available August 19, 2015 from Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada, Foresight Features and Raven Banner Entertainment:
"...'William Cassidy' (Richings) is a man who has had steady interactions with extraterrestrials for the last 40 years, which has left him so filled with paranoia and fear that he now spends his days as a blogger living in seclusion.
"He contacts 'Joe Sullivan' (Adam Seybold), an alien researcher and conspiracy theorist blogger, and invites him to his home on the night of a solar event that Cassidy believes could be potentially dangerous to Earth.
"The film switches back and forth between footage from that night to a later day where Cassidy is being interrogated by an unseen person..."
Cast also includes Lisa Houle as 'Dr. Tobin', Mark Gibson as 'Agent Brinkman', Justin Darmanin as 'Agent Falco',...

Hellmouth Clip and Poster. Stephen McHattie‘s Hellmouth (2015) movie clip (1min and 29sec) and poster have been released.
This clip immediately reminds of the innovative way that Robert Rodriguez blended live-action with animated CG backdrops. Not only is it efficient and cost-effective to work this way, but in both cases it creates a surreal, dreamlike effect that lets the viewer know they’re in for a stylized genre movie. The rules of this film may not be the same as they are for others.
In this case, Stephen McHattie has seemingly created a very interesting palette and sense of immersion. I’m sold, on the visuals, at least. I want to explore more of this world, drive around more and see other parts of town. This strongly reminds me of the style of old Under The Killing Moon point-and-click detective games, or even the Blade Runner PC game.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Anchor Bay Entertainment and Absolute Underground Magazine. Director: John Geddes. Writer: Tony Burgess. Cast: Stephen McHattie, Siobhan Murphy, Ari Millen and Tony Burgess. Writer Tony Burgess (Pontypool) and actor Stephen McHattie reteam for another horror title, Hellmouth. Part hellscape, the film develops much like a nightmare, in which nothing is real. Even the plot dissolves at certain key points. Meanwhile, the CGI visual field is full of demons, an angel and even a Sauron-like antagonist. None of these characters come together in a compelling fashion, with the film struggling to define itself. Possibly meant as an opium dream only, Hellmouth forgets that storytelling is longer lasting than any series of barely connected fantasy sequences. The plot, such as it, begins with Charlie Baker (McHattie). He is a gravedigger, with only a couple of years to live. He has a "brain rattle,...

Calling back to the minimalist sci-fi stories of yesteryear, Ejecta blends found footage camerawork with an Area 51-esque experiment that wants to prove the existence of alien lifeforms. Penned by genre favorite Tony Burgess (Pontypool/Septic Man), it’s a story about paranoia that hits on a possession arc we typically see connected to exorcisms and demonic overtakings – but it’s not one that dares to push the envelope.
What’s been said about extraterrestrial invasions is restated by Ejecta in a lot of the same ways, which only reminds us of past films that have executed interplanetary thrills with far more energy. Whether you’re thinking of the basement scene in Signs, or any first-person chase scene from the Vicious brothers’ Extraterrestrial, directors Chad Archibald and Matt Wiele are only able to produce another bland case of flying saucers and gangly spacemen. Nothing more, and nothing less.

Aliens can be annoying, especially with all the probing and implanting they seem to do. Ejecta features a character that shows just why this is the case, especially if the aliens use the victims head as a radio conductor for their conversations. When people who complain about such things are normally seen as crazy, what happens if they are telling the truth? Then you get a film like Ejecta.
Ejecta focuses on William Cassidy (Julian Richings) who at the beginning of the film is captured by an anonymous group wanting to know the truth about the aliens he says he has encountered. Watching footage found recorded by still missing Joe Sullivan (Adam Seybold) featuring the recent actions of the duo Dr.

Hellmouth is the new one from Exit Humanity director, John Geddes. And writer of Pontypool, Tony Burgess. Hellmouth is a neo-noir horror tale, created with the usage of contrasting colors and other such visual techniques. Some would say that this is in the style of Sin City, which is helped along by the fact that the first third of the film is black and white, with a few traces of color. Personally, I would compare it to Dark Country before Sin City, but I’m one of only 5 people that bothered to see that nice little piece of horror-pulp starring Thomas Jane, so Sin City is probably a more accessible approach to explaining the style to expect. What I’m saying is, a lot of detail is focused on creating the visual style of the world, and it makes for a stunning experience. There are a few frightening scenes along the way.

Friday was Day Two of Toronto After Dark 2014, and the theater was packed for both of the evenings screenings. Hellmouth had its World Premiere, ABCs Of Death 2 had its Toronto Premiere, and the sold out crowds were cheering and ready for both movies. It’s kind of a big deal that both of these screenings sold out, as that means that the first four consecutive films at this year’s festival were completely full. I believe that is a new Tadff record. The festival certainly has grown over the last 8 years, and it’s exciting to watch as more and more films sell out with each iteration.
The night kicked off with Pupa, an anime-style animated mindfuck of a short film that was both entertaining and bizarre. It certainly was a great match for Hellmouth, which is about as Wtf-inducing as they come (more on that in minute), so...

For at least the past few years, we have covered the Toronto After Dark Film Festival annually. Jeff Konopka attends the festival every year, and he usually brings some really good coverage back with him. I am always jealous when he’s there, because I’m listening to the footage that he has recorded, hanging out in a crowded bar talking with filmmakers, as well as other journalists attending the event. It sounds like a lot of fund, and I’d love to make the trip one year. Some of my favorite recent films were shown at Toronto After Dark. Cheap Thrills, Motivational Growth, The Machine, We Are What We Are, Resolution, The Battery, one of my all-time favorite films, Some Guy Who Kills People, and much, much more. Recently, the first 10 films for the 2014 festival were announced, and among them were some highly anticipated films. I will list them all below,...

As we mourn the loss of summer, once the dust has settled here in Toronto in a couple of weeks time, all eyes turn to the Toronto After Dark Film Festival in October. Toronto After Dark is one of our city's premiere purveyors of weird, wonderful and fantastic cinema each year and will be celebrating its ninth edition with style. First and foremost, the festival is proud to host the World Premiere of After Dark alumnus John Geddes' Hellmouth. Severed fingers crossed the Exit Humanity director will bring along Hellmouth writer Tony Burgess (Pontypool, Septic Man and Ejecta) for another rousing Q&A session. There will be time for a grammar lesson in death with the Canadian premiere of ABCs of Death 2. I see no reason why local...
