Five full weeks after the Oscars, the Writers Guild of America finally got around to giving out its awards. Oscar winner Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”) won the original screenplay prize while David Hemingson (“The Holdovers”) picked up the adapted screenplay trophy; he had lost at the Oscars to “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was ineligible here.
Three other scripts deemed ineligible by the WGA went on to win Oscars in the past decade: “Birdman” (2015; original), “The Father” (2021; adapted), and “Belfast” (2022; original). During that time, 68 of the WGA Awards nominees numbered among the 100 screenplays that reaped Oscar bids.
Two other Oscar contenders — “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” — were ruled out of the running by the guild before nominations were announced way back on Feb. 21. The WGA included “Barbie” in the original lineup while the academy had it over in adapted. That was the third time in a decade that...

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s “Firebug,” in which she’ll star opposite Taron Egerton. Smollett will play Michelle, a “rising star detective.”
“Firebug,” loosely based on true events and inspired by a podcast of the same name, stars Egerton as an “enigmatic arson investigator.” The two characters pursue two serial arsonists. Egerton is also an exec producer on the Apple original series (from Apple Studios), from creator Dennis Lehane.

Martin Scorsese recently attended the 96th Academy Awards as his film Killers of the Flower Moon was nominated in 10 categories at the event. The director came with his daughter Francesca Scorsese and the cast of his film to represent the film at the prestigious award ceremony. Lily Gladstone was their best shot at nabbing an award for the night for Best Actress.

However, Scorsese and his daughter seemed to have had a great time at the ceremony, especially during the live musical performances. The USC Libraries announced the winners for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

The writers behind the feature American Fiction and the TV adaptation Slow Horses took home the top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which honors the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors as well as the screenwriters share the award.
In the film category, American Fiction (Cord Jefferson’s adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure) topped fellow nominees Killers of the Flower Moon (Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of David Grann’s book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI); Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Producer Daniel Lupi had worked for years with the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson and Steven Spielberg, but until Killers of the Flower Moon, he had never collaborated with Martin Scorsese. So when he got the call to come on board, it was a no-brainer. “How could you say no to Martin Scorsese?” he says. “He’s Martin Scorsese. Paul Thomas Anderson would probably say the same thing. Some of the shots in Boogie Nights, you could argue, were inspired by Goodfellas.”
Lupi came on board after the script for the adaptation of David Grann’s nonfiction book had already been rewritten to focus on the relationship between Lily Gladstone’s Mollie, an Osage woman, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Ernest Burkhart amid the genocide that Ernest participated in which targeted Mollie’s family. As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

The Oscar-nominated song “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” by Scott George has a deep meaning. The lyrics, sung in Osage, invite listeners to stand up, be tall and be proud. “We’re still here after all of that,” George says.
What George is referring to is the true story of the Osage murders and tragedy that is the basis of Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-nominated film “Killers of the Flower Moon.” George made history when he became the first Osage writer to be nominated for an Academy Award, finding himself being recognized alongside Billie Eilish, Mark Ronson, Diane Warren and Jon Batiste in the original song category.
George knew the “Moon” story when he received the call to write a song for the film. “Some of my relatives were involved in it, and it was difficult to watch,” he admits. But the story was an important one that needed to be told.

The nominees for the 2024 Writers Guild of America Awards are finally here.
The Writers Guild of America West (Wgaw) and Writers Guild of America East (Wgae) have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in screenwriting, television, new media, news, radio/audio, and promotional writing for 2023.
Oscar-nominated screenplays for “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” “Past Lives,” “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and “Oppenheimer” were expected WGA nominations. However, surprise nods for “Air,” “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” and “Nyad” prove the WGA Awards still have a few tricks up their sleeve. If you’re wondering, “Poor Things” was not eligible because it wasn’t produced under a WGA contract, per a source close to the project.

Authenticity was top of mind when Martin Scorsese and his team set about creating the world of “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The Oscar-nominated film, which is in contention for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Cinematography, Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score and Original Song at the Academy Awards, aims to capture the tragic true story of the murders of several Osage in 1921 Oklahoma, and the film’s design team went to great lengths to do service to the tale at hand.
Set during a time when indigenous peoples in the area were tremendously wealthy owing to oil discovered on their land, “Killers of the Flower Moon” chronicles the horrendous series of murders that were designed to transfer ownership of the land back to white people, all told through the eyes of Mollie Burkhart (Lily Gladstone) and her husband Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio).

“Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone embraces her monumental responsibility as an Oscar nominee, utilizing her platform to advocate for the Indigenous community and hoping to pave the way for more actors like herself.
During a panel conversation at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Virtuosos Awards, Gladstone — of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu heritage — addressed the harmful depictions and references to Indians in media, notably mentioning the Kansas City Chiefs the day before their Super Bowl win.
“Honestly, you could hold both teams accountable,” Gladstone tells Variety. “The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California Indians. And then the Chiefs. There are many ways that you could interpret the name ‘chief.’ It’s not just the name that bothers me. It’s hearing that damn Tomahawk chop. When Martin Scorsese strikes up a relationship with his cinematographer, the collaboration tends to last for more than one film. Throughout his legendary career, Scorsese has worked repeatedly with such top names in the art of cinematography as Michael Chapman, Michael Ballhaus, Robert Richardson, and now Rodrigo Prieto. The acclaimed cinematographer, who was an Oscar nominee for “Brokeback Mountain,” has been at Scorsese’s side for the last four of the master filmmaker’s projects. During that run, Prieto has received three Oscar nominations for his artistry.
“It is crazy to imagine that I could even one day in my career say, ‘Yeah, it’s my third nomination with Martin Scorsese for an Oscar.’ What are you talking about?” Prieto, who was nominated this year for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It’s thrilling and I feel very privileged to be in this position.

On the morning of the 2024 Oscar nominations, Scott George was getting ready to go to work. “I had a meeting about two hours away that I was going to try to make, and so I was heading out the door,” George tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. But at the urging of his wife, George stuck around his Oklahoma home long enough to see his name listed among the Best Song nominees at the 2024 Oscars for the original track “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” from “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“It’s been kind of overwhelming and unbelievable,” George says of his historic nomination. A member of Osage Nation, George is not just the first Indigenous person ever nominated in the Best Song category, he’s also the first Osage ever nominated by the Oscars. For a brief shining moment at the beginning of the 21st century, it seemed as though the historical epic was back. Despite the sniffs of some prominent film critics, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator walked away with the Best Picture Oscar in the century’s first year; a flood of sword and sandal epics invaded cinemas like the 1950s never ended; and it generally wasn’t a Russell Crowe movie unless the Australian thespian was waving a saber, cutlass, gladius, or other form of blade through the air.
Yet the movie which arguably stood tallest during this fleeting period was Peter Weir’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Not so much adapting any single novel in author Patrick O’Brian’s legendary Aubrey-Maturin book series, Weir pulled from close to a half-dozen tales in this saga set on the high seas during the Napoleonic Wars. When the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian hosted Apple Original Films’ Killers of the Flower Moon for an event on Friday, director Martin Scorsese and star Lily Gladstone talked extensively about the development and production of the Oscar-nominated epic.
But the multiple Oscar nominated film also is in line with so much of what the Smithsonian is trying to do, according to the Smithsonian’s secretary, Lonnie Bunch, and comes at a time when there is so much debate over the teaching of unvarnished chapters of the American past.
“These kinds of films can help us heal, at the very least help us come to grips with our tortured racist past, come to grips with all the challenges of our history, of by doing that, we find our shared humanity,” Bunch said at the event. “We learn that [with] films like Killers of the Flowers Moon, you cannot escape history,...

After seeing its Martin Scorsese pic Killers of the Flower Moon, depicting the “Reign of Terror” in Osage territory, score 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Apple has announced new grants to the Sundance Institute Indigenous Program and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, in support of Indigenous storytelling and the preservation of Native American history.
The contributions come as part of Apple’s Empowering Creatives program, which supports organizations that help people in underinvested communities unlock their creative potential.
Both grant recipients are dedicated to amplifying the voices and experiences of Native and Indigenous peoples. With a focus on feature and episodic work, Sundance’s program offers labs, fellowships, screenings, and individual feedback sessions for storytellers from Native and Indigenous backgrounds. The National Museum of the American Indian works to educate the public about Native and Indigenous cultures at its locations in Washington, D.C., and New York City.

On Tuesday morning, shortly after receiving the first Native American Lead Actress Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone told Deadline “I also just know that I’m not going to be the last.”
Gladstone is nominated for her Killers of the Flower Moon role of Mollie Burkhart, an oil-rich Osage woman married to Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio). When Mollie’s Osage Nation family are systematically murdered for their money, an FBI investigation uncovers Ernest’s terrible deception. The Martin Scorsese film is based on the 2017 nonfiction book The Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann.

Silence greets Ernest Burkhart when he enters a meeting with the business leaders of Osage County, Oklahoma. This late into Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Ernest (Leonardo DiCaprio) has proven to be easily pliable, to the point that his uncle William “King” Hale (Robert De Niro) can convince him to poison his beloved wife Mollie (Lily Gladstone). But he can be pushed only so far. If the leaders do not want Ernest to testify against his uncle, they must be subtle.
Thus the quiet when Ernest enters the room, which Scorsese and his cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto shoot like a baroque painting. The low mumble of their conversation fades as each withered white face turns from the shadows to face Ernest, who nods in a suggestion of understanding.

The finalists for the 36th USC Libraries Script Awards, honoring the most accomplished films and episodic series adaptations, have been announced. Among the selected are “American Fiction,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” all top-tier contenders for Oscar attention. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Origin” was a surprise entry in the lineup, making her the second Black woman recognized by the awards body (the first was Dee Rees for 2017’s “Mudbound”).
A strong bellwether for the Oscars’ best adapted screenplay category, previous Scripter winners that have matched the Academy in the last decade include “12 Years a Slave” (2013), “The Imitation Game” (2014), “The Big Short” (2015), “Moonlight” (2016), “Call Me by Your Name” (2017), “Nomadland” (2020) and “Women Talking” (2022). The USC Libraries has revealed the finalists for the 36th annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best film and television adaptations, as well as the works on which they are based. This group of academics, industry professionals, and critics (for which I vote) is often predictive of the Adapted Screenplay Oscar race.
Last year, screenwriter Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews won the film award for “Women Talking,” which was nominated for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars; Polley won for Adapted at the Academy Awards. Meanwhile, the television prize last year went to English stand-up comedian and screenwriter Will Smith for the episode “Failure’s Contagious,” from “Slow Horses,” based on the novel by Mick Herron. Past winners include “Call Me By Your Name,” “Moonlight,” “The Big Short,” and “The Imitation Game,” which all won Oscars. In fact, before 2019, eight Scripter Award winners went on to win Oscars.

Killers of the Flower Moon sees director Martin Scorsese tell the story of a series of murders that plagued the Osage Nation in the 1920s. Based on the David Gran book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon is more than just one of the best movies of 2023. It’s a sweeping epic about the United States’ history of corruption that also manages to tell the story of a truly doomed “romance” while shining a light on events that had previously either been ignored or widely misrepresented.
Yet despite the movie’s good intentions and nearly three and a half hour runtime, it doesn’t quite capture everything you need to know about these sobering historic events. For that matter, Scorsese’s decision to modify its source material’s structure by focusing more on the relationship between Mollie and Ernest Burkart and revealing the identity of the conspirators...

But he’d never gone to the degree he did on Killers of the Flower Moon. The first version of the film had almost everything going for it: the David Grann bestseller bought for a shocking $5 million by Imperative Entertainment, a script Eric Roth wrote, and the first teaming of Martin Scorsese, DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, the latter going mano a mano for the first time since This Boy’s Life established a teenaged DiCaprio as the young actor to watch.

Few filmmakers in the annals of cinema have earned the right to take a bow like Martin Scorsese. For nearly 60 years, the maverick storyteller has pushed the limits of his art form and found new ways to leave an indelible mark on the audiences who still show up. So for more than a handful of critics who clapped at my screening when the maestro materialized at the end of Killers of the Flower Moon, it must have seemed like a well-earned mic drop; a chance for Scorsese to take visible ownership of a passion project he’s been shepherding to the screen for the better part of a decade.

Martin Scorsese, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and, in the eyes of many, the greatest filmmaker alive today.

Lily Gladstone is calling out Oklahoma public schools ahead of the “Killers of the Flower Moon” premiere.
The Martin Scorsese film, which is based on David Grann’s nonfiction book chronicling a series of Osage Nation murders in Oklahoma during the 1920s after the discovery of oil on their land, stars Gladstone as a member of the Osage people whose family is murdered. During an Interview magazine conversation with “Certain Women” director Kelly Reichardt, Gladstone compared teaching the film to the denial of reparations for the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre following multiple state lawsuits. “Killers of the Flower Moon” also takes place in the 1920s post the terrorist attack.
“Everything that these Oklahomans are doing is — to say that the objection to teaching about the Tulsa massacre at Greenwood wasn’t race-driven is just — every teacher in the state’s too afraid to teach ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,'” Gladstone said.

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.

Paul Thomas Anderson has announced his next project, marking his first collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio.
The “Licorice Pizza” auteur is set to write, direct, and produce the upcoming untitled project that co-stars Sean Penn and Regina Hall, among an ensemble cast. Penn previously appeared in “Licorice Pizza” as a loose riff on William Holden.
According to Deadline, the new film will have a “contemporary setting” and “is the most commercial” installment in Anderson’s filmography.
Warner Bros. produces the film, with Anderson reuniting with Warner Bros. Picture Group CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy after working with them while the duo was at MGM, where Anderson’s thrice Oscar-nominated “Licorice Pizza” was produced. De Luca was also behind Anderson’s “Boogie Nights” as the former head of production at New Line Cinema. Variety reported that the budget is estimated to be approaching $100 million.

“She was almost larger than life in that character, with a bravery and an unpredictable quality,” says Rene Haynes, who was the film’s Indigenous casting director. “She’s also smart and can think on her feet.”
(Haynes says Zoom bombing a meeting with Myers and her manager to tell her she’d landed the role was “one of the most moving moments of my career,” while Myers says she wishes she’d recorded it. “I just started smiling and sobbing — it was probably the most ugly cry.”)

Director Martin Scorsese has long been known for his rigorous dedication to authenticity, and “Killers of the Flower Moon” is quite possibly his densest film yet in terms of journalistic detail. Working closely with Osage advisers who vetted every line of Scorsese and Eric Roth’s screenplay, researcher Marianne Bower compiled thousands of pages of research material and visual references that she made available to all of the department heads as resources to tell their tragic story. The result is one of the most fully realized historical epics ever put on screen, a film in which each gesture, fabric, prop, and camera movement builds to create an immersive emotional experience for the audience.
The demand for verisimilitude placed extreme demands on Scorsese’s collaborators, all of whom felt a deep sense of responsibility to the Osage people. “It was important to [Scorsese] that it be truthful and fair,” production designer Jack Fisk told IndieWire,...

While Martin Scorsese is celebrating his latest epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” on the awards circuit, the filmmaker is already teasing what could be his next movie, based on Shūsaku Endō’s book “A Life of Jesus.”
Scorsese revealed in a new interview with The Los Angeles Times that his next religious film will be set mostly in the present day, but, according to the paper, “Scorsese doesn’t want to be locked into a certain period, because he wants the film to feel timeless.” Plus, he envisions the film will clock in at around 80 minutes, a stark contrast to “Flower Moon’s” 206-minute runtime. Per the L.A. Times, the movie will focus on “Jesus’ core teachings in a way that explores the principles but doesn’t proselytize.”

Martin Scorsese officially has two new films in the works.
Apple Original film “The Wager” was already announced, marking Scorsese’s second adaptation of a David Grann non-fiction book following “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and now the Oscar winner has also confirmed the script for “A Life of Jesus” has been completed.
Scorsese said in an interview with The Los Angeles Times that he co-wrote the adaptation of “Silence” author Shūsaku Endō’s “A Life of Jesus” with critic and filmmaker Kent Jones. According to the L.A. Times, Scorsese “plans to shoot it later this year” in 2024. Where exactly that leaves production on “The Wager” starring Leonardo DiCaprio remains to be seen. IndieWire has reached out to Scorsese’s representatives for comment.
