Fox has bought a comedy spec from The Ugly Truth scribe Nicole Eastman. The project falls under Fox's initiative to develop more shows outside of the traditional pilot cycle. Written by Eastman, the half-hour project centers on four children who, after their mother’s death, inherit millions they never knew they had, causing chaos amongst the family. 20th Century Fox TV is the studio. Fox had been looking to pick up 2 drama pilots and 2 comedy pilots from the extra scripts…...

Chicago – Here’s an alleged romantic comedy as clueless about romance as it is about comedy. It has a premise designed to illustrate how women think with their minds, while men think with their nether regions. Yet the male and female leads of “The Ugly Truth” are practically indistinguishable from each other. They’re both overly judgmental, profoundly self-absorbed, and thoroughly reprehensible. Neither of them would dream of dating a member of the opposite sex that didn’t meet their rigid list of superficial expectations based on physical features. These two people are clearly made for each other.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Their inherent likability directly conflicts with their unlikable characters. Heigl plays a TV producer who has all the warmth of Kate Gosselin, while Butler plays a local cable...

One of the trio of women responsible for The Ugly Truth, Nicole Eastman has signed on to adapt Time Of My Life, a time-travelling romance with a touch of the melodrama.Based on Allison Winn Scotch's 2008 novel, Time Of My Life focuses on a happily married young mother with a beautiful home in the suburbs who wakes one day to find herself seven years in the past and back with her advertising executive ex-boyfriend.Will the chance to relive her past make her happy or will she end up building herself a DeLorean in a desperate attempt to get back to her loving husband and daughter? Having not read the book, we have no idea (the latter?), but it's an interesting The Time Traveler's Wife-meets-17 Again premise.Meryl Poster and Kate Schumaecker are producing Time Of My Life for The Weinstein Company and NBC production company, Superb Entertainment.

The players: Director: Robert Luketic, Writer: Nicole Eastman, Karen McCullah Lutz, Cast: Katherine Heigl, Gerard Butler, Eric Winter, John Michael Higgins, Nick Searcy
Facts of interest: Robert Luketic also directed "21" and "Legally Blonde."
The plot: Abby is a television producer whose life takes a major turn when she's forced to work with Mike, a ruthless host who claims he knows the truth about what makes men and women tick.
Our thoughts: To be quite honest, I walked into Robert Luketic’s “The Ugly Truth” with high expectations, but sadly enough, I left the theater wishing I’d never found out how ugly this truth really is. In other words, watching this film quickly developed into a painfully boring experience I simply can’t recommend to cinemagoers on the lookout for a funny, entertaining romance.

I’m trying to figure out when “romantic comedies” turned into “let’s throw two really despicable and unpleasant people together in the first act so they can hate on each other through the second act until they magically fall in love in the third act.” Cuz this is a cinematic development to be despised, and possibly one to start a revolution to overthrow. I’n trying to figure out what kind of self-hating circle jerk is involved on the parts of three female screenwriters who collaborate to create one of the most horrid female protagonists since, well, The Proposal, and then go on to treat her in such an unforgivable way... while also being so easy and tolerant of their pig of a “hero.” Cuz this is an antifeminist development to be despised. Not that women writers must always create likeable female characters, but even complicated, fucked-up female characters...

Katherine Heigl stars in 'The Ugly Truth'

What I’d Seen - Unlike most romantic comedy trailers, The Ugly Truth appeared as though it might have a few jokes aimed at the male demographic. Butler’s character, who appeared to be a rough variation on Tom Cruise’s Frank T.J. Mackey motivational speaker from Magnolia, appeared sure to illicit some inappropriate laughs with this tell-it-like-it-is persona.

Oh god, she’s one of those, isn’t she? Background checks before a first date. Assuming something a guy wrote in his online profile is the entire totality of his personality and tastes. Oh god, he’s one of those, isn’t he? Women are fatties, unless they aren’t, which is when he likes them on top. These are not charming people. Ugh. Who writes these movies? Opposites don’t really attract, not in real life. And in the movies, it’s just super, super, super annoying to get saddled with characters like these two, no matter how charming Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler may be onscreen in general, and know that they’re going to fall madly for each other by the end of the movie. Because we never, ever get the followup of a few months later, when they’re ready to kill each other. Ah,...

Last year, Sony released a poster for their summer romantic comedy The Ugly Truth that my graphics designer friend praised (which is rare), saying that it was "cleverly minimalistic and effective." It was simple but got people interested, which is important for effective poster design. Well, Sony has released the final version of the poster and replaced the stick figures with the real actors - Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl. I think they did a good job taking the simple design and adding some faces to it, so I wanted to feature it today. I've also put up the original poster below to compare the two side-by-side, if you're interested. The Ugly Truth is directed by Australian filmmaker Robert Luketic, of Legally Blonde, Monster-in-Law, and 21 most recently. The story was developed by newcomer Nicole Eastman and the screenplay was written by Eastman and writing duo Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten...
