Apologies to Thomas Wolfe, but it appears you can go home again.
Oscar winner John Ridley, co-host of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast, returns to his native Milwaukee for the latest edition of the pod, recorded live during the 16th Milwaukee Film Festival. He and co-host Matt Carey, documentary editor at Deadline, speak with two filmmakers bringing new work to the festival: Sav Rodgers, director of Chasing Chasing Amy, and Mary Louise Schumacher, director of Out of the Picture.
Rodgers makes his feature documentary debut with Chasing Chasing Amy, a film that examines how Kevin Smith’s 1997 hit Chasing Amy became a lifeline for Rodgers as a queer, trans kid growing up in conservative Kansas, and how the indie drama impacted the culture at large. Smith’s film told the story of a straight man (played by Ben Affleck) falling in love with a gay woman (played by Joey Lauren Adams...

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Jenna Ortega's evolution from Disney princess to scream queen is about more than just a shift in the types of roles she plays. At some point during her transition from family-friendly TV to darker film roles, the actor has become a global star. Having gained widespread recognition for playing Wednesday Adams in Neftlix's "Wednesday," the now 21-year-old is set to star in the upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," where her character will fittingly represent a new generation of goth icons as the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz. In other words, Ortega has come a long way since her Disney Channel days. However, she hasn't quite come far enough for some, at least in terms of age.
In January 2024, "Miller's Girl" debuted in theaters. Ortega starred alongside Martin Freeman in this $4 million dollar erotic thriller, which unfortunately made just $890,000 in theaters. Critics weren't too impressed with "Miller's Girl," either, making...

Victims, aren’t we all? Well, Eric Draven is at least, and we’re not talking about his Devil’s Night death. When the first look at Bill Skarsgård’s version of the character arrived earlier this week, the reception was poor to say the least. One peek at this new Eric Draven and pretty much one thing came to everybody’s mind: Jared Leto as The Joker. Complete with a tattoo above the eyebrow and one that even let his left nipple stand in for an eyeball, the look has been widely blasted by fans and even those directly linked to the 1994 cult favorite. Now, someone tied very closely to Leto’s Joker, David Ayer, has chimed in…although his dig is a little more subtle than most.
Responding to a post showing Skarsgård as Eric Draven in the upcoming reboot, David Ayer said nothing, only laying down a sly side-eye emoji.

Mayor Eric Adams (D-New York) has expressed his desire to end the city’s sanctuary city policy and suggests that migrants “suspected” of major crimes should be handed over to federal immigration officials.
This proposal represents a potential shift in New York’s approach to protecting undocumented individuals.
In a press conference at City Hall, Adams stated, “I want to go back to the standards of the previous mayors who I believe subscribe to my belief that people who are suspected of committing serious crimes in this city should be held accountable.”
Adams emphasized the need to return to the standards set by previous mayors, such as Ed Koch and Michael Bloomberg, who allowed police to detain those arrested and charged for longer periods, which enabled U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to issue detainers.
However, the current rules established under former Mayor Bill de Blasio provide a level of...

Before “Game of Thrones,” there was “Shōgun.”
Both are bestselling novels about a factional war between regents/kings to determine who will sit on a recently usurped throne … but James Clavell’s “Shōgun” was published in 1975, 21 years before George R. R. Martin’s “A Game of Thrones” hit bookshelves. Both became pop culture juggernauts with an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Peabody Award-winning television adaptation that was so popular that restaurants reported a dip in sales whenever an episode aired … but “Shōgun’s” first adaptation premiered in 1980, “Thrones” in 2012. Both draw on real life history to craft dramatic stories, but “Game of Thrones” is a fantasy and “Shōgun” is historical fiction. Kind of.
FX’s 2024 adaptation of “Shōgun” will introduce a new generation to Clavell’s unique twist on writing historical fiction — that is to say, one where all of the historical characters’ names are changed. And many of the events...

Blkfam, a new free, ad-supported streaming service created by digital marketing Larry Adams, launches today with Whoopi Goldberg as an equity partner.
The streamer says it fills a major gap in the market as “the first and only Black-owned, Black-focused family streaming platform.” It starts with a content library of 20+ syndicated series, 1,000+ hours of new animation titles – including dozens of new animated characters of color and diverse gender experiences — and hundreds of hours of original music driven content.
Ten new original live action and animated series are in development to premiere on the platform throughout the year, the streamer said, along with investigative journalism and news, fitness and wellness series, Black history, sitcoms and reality shows, — “all through the lens of the Black experience.”

A new streaming service is launching Monday, one with a very specific focus and a very famous investor.
Blkfam, which is targeting Black family audiences, is founded by WarnerMedia veteran Larry Adams, with Whoopi Goldberg on board as an equity investor and a creative force.
“I’m the marketing, distribution, business guy, she’s the creative powerhouse behind this that’s going to make it really magical,” Adams tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.
Adams says the idea for Blkfam came while realizing that major streaming services like Netflix and Max were not adequately serving the Black family audience. He recalled scrolling through the Black Voices section of one service and noting that “it was kind of like a grab bag. It really felt like you have rows and rows of Black voices, but a lot of it wasn’t curated for my family.”

With the Oscars just around the corner, you could have easily mistaken the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards for a late-season “Barbie” party. But the pops of pink, magenta, and fuchsia that met honorees and guests throughout NeueueHouse in Hollywood on February 21 weren’t nodding to the billion-dollar Best Picture bid; they were sending a message to the AMPTP.
“We’re fighting for pay equity with department creative heads that are mostly male,” Ariyela Wald-Cohain told IndieWire. The FBI seized the electronic devices of New York City Mayor Eric Adams days after raiding the home of his chief fundraiser in connection to an investigation into allegations that his campaign laundered illegal donations from the Turkish government into their accounts.
According to a report from The New York Times, federal authorities approached the mayor on the street with a search warrant and had him turn over at least two cell phones and an iPad. The devices were reportedly returned to Adams several days later, after being copied by authorities.

The stylish killer has long been a staple in crime films, and not just in Hollywood movies like “Collateral” and “Pulp Fiction.” The tradition spans the globe, from England (“Get Carter”) to Hong Kong (John Woo’s “The Killer“) and France (the revisionist noir films of Jean-Pierre Melville and Jean-Luc Godard). Yet for the new Netflix movie “The Killer” (no relation to the Woo film), director David Fincher wanted something different: a killer (Michael Fassbender) whose style was so nonexistent that he could just blend into the background of any city.
“In our initial conversations, David said that he didn’t want Fassbender to look cool, he wanted him to look dorky,” costume designer Cate Adams told IndieWire. “When he’s in Paris, we wanted him to look like a German tourist no one would want to go near.” That idea came from the guiding principle for the killer: Every...

"Bones" enjoyed an enviable 12 season run, but not all of the main cast was there to enjoy that success in its totality. One face who left after just a single season was the actor Jonathan Adams.
The title of "Bones" is a double entendre, referring both to physical human bones and the show's lead, Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel). Bones is a forensic anthropologist at the "Jeffersonian" (read: Smithsonian) Institute in Washington DC. She uses her skills to study human remains and help the FBI — especially Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) — solve murder cases old and new. As a police procedural with a forensic edge, "Bones" walks in the footsteps of "CSI." Only on this show, it's not the scenes of crimes that are investigated, but the leftovers.
During the show's first season, Adams played Dr. Goodman, the Jeffersonian's administrator and Bones' boss. At the end of season 1, he...

The talented Adams Family’s hit film “Hellbender” was ranked No. 1 on Rotten Tomatoes Top 10 of best-rated horror films of 2022. Their most recent film, “Where the Devil Roams,” was purchased by Tubi after premiering at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival on July 27th.
Alongside parents John and Toby Adams, sisters Zelda and Lulu are experiencing a meteoric rise in the horror genre. In addition to writing her first feature length screenplay, Lulu was recently spotted on set of the new Coleman Brothers movie, portraying the character “Eleanor.”
Like her inaugural screenplay (which recently wrapped production), not much has been publicly announced about the new Coleman Brothers movie.
So far, we know that it’s a vampire movie and that it’s written and directed by Vince and James Coleman. We also know that Lulu’s character “Eleanor” gets turned and becomes a bloodsucker. Not much else is known about the movie as of right now.

Rob Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr, Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler have joined the ensemble cast of Adam McKay’s ‘Average Height, Average Build.’
Dubbed as a “pretty ingenious marriage of a black comedy premise with the corruption that is rife in politics.” Pattinson will play a serial killer who enlists a lobbyist (Adams) to change laws that will allow him to get away with murder more easily. Downey’s role is a retired cop who won’t give up on the murders, and the killer tries to prevent him from dogging his trial now that he’s hung up his gun. The serial killer turns himself into a cause celebre, a Mr Smith Goes to Washington figure shielding his true motives.

Meta-narratives may have only recently become popular in mainstream media, but stories within stories have been a part of human culture since ancient times. From One Thousand and One Nights to Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, our fascination with the repercussions of storytelling has itself been transformed into fuel for compelling stories, and this also applies to the horror genre.
Cosmic horror yarns are chock-full of characters who go mad after reading cursed tomes, and we’ve already covered the meta-terror of Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, but few movies have managed to capture the magic of being deeply disturbed by an unnaturally gripping story. One exception to this is Tom Ford’s controversial thriller Nocturnal Animals, with the fashion-designer-turned-filmmaker using the film’s Russian doll setup to explore how horror narratives can be used to communicate.

After months of murmuring, the latest A-list ensemble project from The Big Short and Don’t Look Up filmmaker Adam McKay has hit Hollywood.
Titled Average Height, Average Build, the project is being described as part serial killer thriller, part comedy, following a killer who uses political lobbyists to change laws in order to make it easier for him to kill, according to sources. Like all of McKay’s recent work, the project will tackle larger sociopolitical ills — à la the 2008 housing crisis (The Big Short) and climate crisis (Don’t Look Up) — this time taking on crime and corruption.
McKay wrote the script and would direct the feature that hit the inbox of studio heads this week. Actors already attached include Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler. The script calls for many more characters to be filled in.
The project has been percolating with McKay for quite some time,...

Adam McKay, the director of Don’t Look Up, Vice, The Big Short, The Other Guys, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, and the Anchorman movies, is pitching his next film to studios and streamers – and, as you would expect from a director with a line-up of credits like that, it looks like this one is going to have multiple A-listers in its cast as well. Robert Pattinson is attached to star, and Robert Downey Jr. is among the actors who could end up in the supporting cast. The film is called Average Height, Average Build, and while McKay describes it as a “political dramedy”, the lead character happens to be a serial killer.
Update: Deadline adds that Amy Adams, Forest Whitaker, and Danielle Deadwyler are also up for roles.

Many actors dream of having their work be seen on a global scale. But, Jenna Ortega seems to be a bit of a reluctant celebrity. One of the actor’s latest projects, Wednesday, has quickly catapulted her into superstardom. Her portrayal of the teenage Adams daughter has been streamed billions of times over the last five months. Furthermore, the short dance sequence that she choreographed for the show has gone viral, with celebrities like Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian reenacting the moves. But it seems that Ortega was hoping that that part of her performance would garner a lot less attention.

Director Jamie Adams reflects on early relationships and the ghosts of unresolved separation in his latest film, She Is Love. The story revolves around an unexpected reunion, when Patricia (Haley Bennett) arrives at a country hotel in Cornwall that is run by her ex-husband, Idris (Sam Riley) and his girlfriend Louise (Marisa Abela). As if fate has thrust them together, Patricia and Sam struggle through the awkwardness of their shared history, in the hope of finding a resolution.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Adams discussed his interest in improvisation, its limits, and using cinema to explore ideas that are neither possible nor pragmatic.
Paul Risker: There’s the story we see onscreen, and there’s the story in the making of the film. Are there any stories within the story that come to mind?
Jamie Adams: The first thing is the pandemic affected us.

Amy Adams has been a shining star in Hollywood for many years. She’s incredibly talented with a captivating presence. Whether she’s making the viewers tear up with dramatic TV shows like Sharp Objects or she’s scamming people as a vixen con artist in American Hustler, Adams is one of the best in the industry. The actress is also noted for her roles in Enchanted, Catch Me If You Can and as Lois Lane in the DC Extended Universe. There is no doubt she’s built an impressive career over the years. However, there’s more to her than just her iconic movie...

Season 3 may or may not be the final installment of “Ted Lasso,” but either way, Jason Sudeikis could do something that hasn’t been done in 35 years: win three consecutive Best Comedy Actor Emmys.
Only three men have accomplished this feat in the category: Don Adams for “Get Smart” (1967-69), Carroll O’Connor for “All in the Family” (1977-79) and Michael J. Fox for “Family Ties” (1986-88). You could also could count Dick Van Dyke, who won for “The Dick Van Dyke Show” from 1964-66, but the first two were prior to the standardization of the comedy actor category. His 1964 win was under a discontinued lead actor category that was not genre specific, while 1965 was the year the Emmys experimented with just four categories and awarded five people, including Van Dyke, with a generic performance prize. O’Connor and Fox both have four comedy actor Emmys total, sharing the category record...

New York, March 20 (Ians) Less than a year after divorcing model-actress Jerry Hall, the 92-year-old Australian American media mogul, Rupert Murdoch, is hearing wedding bells again. He’s engaged to Ann Lesley Smith, a 66-year-old San Francisco police chaplain, reports ‘Variety’.
Quoting gossip columnist Cindy Adams, who broke the story in the ‘New York Post’, ‘Variety’ says Murdoch’s future wife was married to Chester Smith, a country-western singer, as well as a radio and TV executive who died in 2008.
Adams reports that the two bonded over their shared knowledge of the media business as well as the fact that she once owned a vineyard and he still does.
If they tie the knot, according to ‘Variety’, it will be Murdoch’s fifth marriage. Jerry Hall, a model and actress, was married to Murdoch for six years. In addition to Hall, Murdoch was previously married to Wendi Deng from 1999 to...

‘Satan Wants You’ SXSW Review – Compelling Documentary Chronicles Destructive Roots of Satanic Panic
The early ’80s Satanic Panic phenomenon frequently spills over into horror thanks to the wave’s systematic targeting of the genre and heavy metal. Recent horror comedies or even the latest “Stranger Things” season highlight the absurdity of moral panic mania founded in baseless claims of Satanic ritual abuse. Documentary Satan Wants You chronicles one of the prominent causes of Satanic Panic, resulting in a compelling mystery unsettling for its overarching reach.
The 1980 novel Michelle Remembers is attributed as a harbinger of Satanic Panic. Canadian psychiatrist Lawrence Pazder and his long-term patient and eventual wife Michelle Smith coauthored the book, detailing therapy sessions that uncovered repressed memories of lurid Satanic rituals and abuse Smith endured. The book became a bestseller, bolstered by daytime TV, and spread the idea that Satanists could be everywhere (including your neighborhood) like wildfire and doused gasoline on moral panic.

It’s the turn of the century. New York’s music scene is flatlining. Enter The Strokes, all surly insouciance, torn denim and tattered Converse. Theirs is an electrifying din; mixing distorted vocals with spindly guitars, it’s the defibrillator that the rock ’n’ roll scene so badly needs. From grimy graffiti-covered toilet stalls in dingy dive bars, these five New Yorkers stumble bleary-eyed out onto the biggest stages on the planet.

The life of author and activist Eve Adams, an early chronicler of LGBTQ people in New York City, will be the subject of a TV drama in the works at Universal Television.
Gabe Dunn (Big Mouth) and Arika Lisanne Mittman (La Brea, The Irrational) are developing a drama based on The Daring Life and Dangerous Times of Eve Adams, a biography by historian Jonathan Ned Katz. Dunn will write the script and executive produce with Mittman and Matt Sadeghian; Katz is a consulting producer.
An immigrant from Poland, Adams (born Chawa Zloczewer) founded a literary salon and tearoom in Greenwich Village in the mid-1920s. The tearoom, known as Eve’s Hangout, was the first openly lesbian spot in the city. Adams also published the book Lesbian Love, a series of vignettes about women she had known and what Katz believes to be the first use of the word lesbian...
