This week, yet another fantastic horror film is headed to Shudder—Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence—and I cannot recommend it enough. An adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s graphic novel of the same name, the film follows comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) and his closest collaborators as they take a road trip from Canada to New York. Along the way, Todd must reconcile the violence he brings to the page when his creation “Slasherman,” which is based on a real-life serial killer, ends up tracking the group during their travels, and finds his own gruesome sense of inspiration as he gets closer and closer to Todd, where real life and fantasy clash in the most horrific of ways.
Last week, Daily Dead spoke with Baruchel about Random Acts of Violence, and while chatting, he discussed the long journey of getting the film made, his thoughts...

The Violent Bear It Away: Baruchel Turns Murder into Art with Fragmented Debut
An exercise which navigates the oft-blurred lines between art and exploitation, actor Jay Baruchel turns to the director’s seat with his debut Random Acts of Violence, adapted from the graphic novel by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.
Although it features Jesse Williams in a lead performance and mines some interesting subtexts, there’s an overall sense of incompleteness to a narrative which can’t quite deliver on the moody, self-reflexiveness it promises.
Todd (Williams) is the successful author of a violent comic book series, “Slasherman,” which details the rampage of the I-90 killer, a criminal who was never apprehended but left many victims from 1987 to 1991.…...

Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. For Baruchel, as well as fans of the genre, it’s worth the wait. The film is a horror outing, one that seeks to ponder what the real life consequences can be when life imitates art. Here,...

On its most superficial horror flick level, Jay Baruchel’s latest directorial effort Random Acts of Violence works. Co-adapted with Jesse Chabot from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2010 graphic novel of the same name, the story sees Slasherman comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) hitting the road from Toronto to New York City with his wife (Jordana Brewster’s Kathy), assistant (Niamh Wilson’s Aurora), and business partner (Baruchel’s Ezra) in advance of a Comic-Con appearance. The reason they’ve decided not to fly is because Kathy is on a research mission for a new book she’s writing about the real “Slasherman’s” victims along 1-90. Todd’s run of glorifying the terrifying mystique of this killer has reached its end, so it’s only right to honor those lost upon his fictional death.

Something big this way comes, and it is an entirely new adaptation of a DC comic book property. Lionsgate has lined up the project, which will bring The Monolith to movie theatres – having enjoyed a 12 issue run between 2004 and 2005. Created by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, the plot is a variation on the idea of the Golem – a legendary, destructive aberration made of clay.
The movie will mark the feature film debut of director Dave Wilson and writer Barnett Brettler. Despite his big screen inexperience, the name of Dave Wilson brings with it some weight, as his day job is in the role of creative director at Blur Studios. Blur is the brainchild of Tim Miller – director of box office hit, Deadpool.

As part of Hollywood’s campaign to burn through every available comic book property inside of a decade, Lionsgate has turned its attention to Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s mid-aughts graphic novel The Monolith. As originally published by DC Comics over the course of 12 issues released from April 2004 to March 2005, the story is a modern take on the the Jewish myth of the golem.
In this retelling, a recovering drug addict inherits and moves into her grandmother’s old house in Brooklyn. She quickly discovers that the residence is still home to an enormous creature that her grandmother helped bring into existence back in the 1930s to avenge the death of an innocent man. Eventually, The Monolith is inadvertently unleashed upon the trendy New York borough, and its inheritor is left struggling to control not only it, but her own addictions.

Some intriguing stuff capturing the attention of horror fans around the globe is the prospect of Rob Zombie working on an animated prequel to The Hills Have Eyes. Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiottis graphic novel The Hills Have Eyes The Beginning appears (we say that with trepidation) to be moving forward migrating from the page to the screen. And according to imdb.com Rob Zombie is involved to some degree.

With How to Train Your Dragon 2 Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature and his nutty Fxx comedy Man Seeking Woman in the midst of its first season, January has been a big month for Jay Baruchel. But if the actor has his way, this is only the start of a truly massive year; during an interview with Collider, Baruchel revealed that he’s hoping to make his feature directorial debut on Random Acts of Violence sometime in 2015.
An adaptation of the comic by Jonah Hex scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, Random Acts of Violence will center on two comic-book writers who hit the road to promote their new character Slasherman. When real bodies start piling up in ways that mirror the murderous creation’s work on the page, though, the two realize that Slasherman may have taken on a life of his own.

The Ray #1 – #4
Written by Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti

Despite many well deserved bad words being flung at DC Comics on account of their poorly planned New 52 reboot, there are some actual moments where all the elements come into play, and there’s a bona fide gem to be found. Case and point: The Ray, a measly four issue miniseries starring one of the Freedom Fighters, shines through as one of the shockingly enjoyable, yet ignored reads of DC’s current status quo.
The Ray is very much an origin story with no ties to previous incarnations save for name and powers based around light. The central player is Lucien Gates, a Korean American lifeguard, enjoying the sunny beaches of San Diego until he’s blasted with an experimental solar gun, granting him super powers. What’s refreshing about...

I'm not going to lie. I originally picked up the relaunched adventures of Jonah Hex because of the cover of the first issue. The reluctant hero sitting on a horse next to a Gotham city limit sign reeled me in. Anything that takes place in the Dark Knight's gloomy hometown immediately is put on my must-read list. Hex is still keeping me interested in All Star Western Volume 3: The Black Diamond Probability.
"All Star Western Volume 3: The Black Diamond Probability" is made up of issues 0 and 13 through 16 of the ongoing series. It starts off with the origin of Jonah Hex and how he came to acquire his trademark scar and bad attitude he's infamous for. Next, he goes up against a madman obsessed with tracking down the formula for Dr. Jekyll's potion. Can Hex stop him before he finds it and uses it for his own diabolical purposes?...

Despite all the hype about movies, TV shows, and video games, there are still comics panels and comic related news coming from San Diego Comic Con. Many of the announcements were made before the show, but there were few awesome surprises for almost every company, including Marvel, Dark Horse, and some especially interesting ones from Idw.
Marvel Announces the “Cataclysm” Event for the Ultimate Universe
This is a given, but Marvel has way too many events. “Age of Ultron” hadn’t even ended, and there were teasers about “Infinity”, “Battle of the Atom”, and the “Inhumanity” events. However, “Cataclysm” could be a decent story for several reasons. First, it will only cross over into the three titles at the most. The Ultimate Universe has thirteen years of continuity to catch up with, but only three books (Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimates) so it’s easier to know what’s going on in it.

After beginning life as part of the series "Batman Incorporated," Batwing was eventually spun off into his own series, protecting Tinasha, a fictional city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Currently under the hero's mask is Luke Fox, son of Wayne Enterprises executive Lucius Fox. Fans of the "Dark Knight" movie trilogy may remember Morgan Freeman playing the role of Lucius.
In a preview of issue 22, Luke returns to Gotham City, realizing his actions in Africa have led to his dad being kidnapped. Batman assures him that he'll take care of the problem. However, once Luke realizes how important his dad is to the Bat, as Lucius is the man behind Batman's suits and tech, he suits up as Batwing to take matters into his own hands.

Injustice: Gods Among Us is now available with new Dlc arriving on May 7. We recently discussed with writer Jimmy Palmiotti the game’s dark storyline and the rising popularity of superheroes in media.
Amanda Dyar: You have worked on several amazing projects which include Jonah Hex, Daredevil, Deadpool, and Ghost Rider to name a few. How did you get started in comics, and what are you most proud of today?
Jimmy Palmiotti: I went to the High School of Art & Design in NYC and then after eight years in advertising decided I wanted to change my path and went back to my first love--comic books. I started doing backgrounds for a buddy, Mark Texeria, while drawing and inking some black and white indie books. Eventually I got some decent jobs at Marvel Comics and a few years later met and teamed up to self-publish with Joe Quesada and created EVeNT Comics.

DC’s New 52 began as a highly profitable idea for the struggling publisher. It saw a huge boost in sales and interest for DC’s books and for a while they were completely dominant over the Diamond comic-book top 10. However, times have changed and through a cross between creative differences and Marvel Now!, DC currently are publishing a lot of struggling titles again. This is something that has been reflected in the large number of cancellations they have announced lately.
Here, I’m going to go through DC’s top five worst selling New 52 titles that have yet to be cancelled and make some predictions on their futures…
1. Batwing
Currently Selling: 13K copies per month
Status: Last Chance!
Batwing was a title that started off very strongly in The New 52 with 41,000 copies sold in September 2011. However, since then it has lost nearly 30,000 of those readers, and now struggles around the 13,000 mark.

As comic enthusiasts, we've been keeping a close eye on NetherRealms' superpowered smackdown "Injustice: Gods Among Us." Jason's pretty much covered the basics during his Sdcc preview but I got a chance to dig in a little bit more on the story side as well as explore some of the extra bells and whistles. Caution: minor spoilers ahead.
If you've been keeping up to date with DC's "Injustice" comics, then you should have pretty solid idea about what's going on. Here's the Sparx Notes version- Superman's main squeeze, Lois Lane, is dead -- by his own hands. Let's rewind. You know The Joker -- lanky guy, clown make-up, pretty insane? Right, he was able to induce Supes with a temporary madness which caused him to believe Lois was Doomsday. So of course he throws her into the space killing her and setting into motion a series of events that goes pretty south for Metropolis.

This latest story trailer sheds light on the battle between the heroes gone dark of Netherrealm's fighter "Injustice: Gods Among Us" as Lex Luthor picks his side in the battle for Earth.
We've had a pretty good sense of the direction of the story of "Injustice," essentially a "Mirror, Mirror" version of the DC Comics universe where the heroes of the Justice League have taken it upon themselves to assume complete control of the world. It's kind of a reverse-riff on Mark Waid's miniseries "Kingdom Come" where the world of superheroes changes dramatically after Lois Lane is killed--in this case, instead of sending Superman into retirement, it makes him go all dark and broody.
We now know that Batman is leading a resistance effort against Superman and the blandly-named "Regime" (really?) and that Lex Luthor is straddling the line between helping the resistance and being at the big table with the League.

Mariah Carey's latest sing, "Almost Home," was officially released today. It is the theme song to the upcoming Disney film, Oz: The Great and Powerful. The song was produced and written by Mariah, Stargate, Simone Porter, Justin Gray and Lindsey Ray. The music video will make it's debut March 8, same day as the film is released in theaters. The 43-year-old singer is currently working on her new album, which is expected to hit stores in the Spring. Her last album came in 2010, "Merry Christmas II You." Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the...

Taking its cue directly from the final page of The Court of Owls where the Court declares all-out war on Gotham, it’s battle-stations for Batman and the Bat-family as the Court’s army of elite assassins, the Talons, target nearly 40 of Gotham’s most prominent figures – but can Batman and co. save them from certain death? The Night of the Owls has begun…
This technically isn’t Volume 2 in Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series but a collection of the numerous crossovers where nearly all of the Bat-books had an issue featuring that series’ character facing a Talon to help Batman thwart the Court’s plans. But this is the book that happens in between Court of Owls (Vol 1) and City of Owls (Vol 2) and should be considered a big piece in this story arc. For reference, the Night of the Owls hardback...

I can't help but assume a Mariah Carey original song for a Disney film, in this case Oz the Great and Powerful, will be a potential contender for Best Original Song at the Oscars next year and while it is only February, it doesn't hurt to speculate. That said, today you get to sample the new track, which is titled "Almost Home" and will be available on iTunes on Tuesday, February 19 and will have a David Lachapelle-directed music video arriving soon enough. DC has confirmed the cancellation of six additional ‘New 52′ titles, including Deathstroke, Fury of the Firestorm, The Savage Hawkman, The Ravagers, Sword of Sorcery and Team 7, all of which will see their final issues released in May.
The announcement came in the form of a Q&A session with DC editor-in-chief Bob Harras and editorial director Bobbie Chase. Of the six titles to get the axe, only two of them were part of the initial ‘New 52′ lineup; Deathstroke and Fury of the Firestorm. NetherRealm's upcoming brawler featuring the heroes and villains of the DC Universe gets a new, Vo-heavy trailer hinting at more of its story.
Superman's stubble: confirmed.
Details about the story have been coming out in drips and drabs, although we do know it's by longtime collaborators Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray ("All-Star Western," "Jonah Hex"), featuring dark, grittier takes on the heroes of the Dcu who've maybe taken the law into their own hands (moreso than a vigilante could be said to have already taken the law into their own hands).
I didn't detect any new characters in this clip, but perhaps some of you eagle-eyed viewers out there might be able to spy a reveal I may have missed. You do get to see a power suit-wearing Lex Luthor get into it, though.
"Injustice: Gods Among Us" will be available on April 16 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U.

Based on a true story, Ben Affleck's "Argo" tells the tale of six American hostages that escape the U.S. embassy in Tehran after its taken over my Islamic militants. In order to get out of Iran, the six Americans must pretend to be part of a Canadian film crew shooting a fake movie called "Argo." Which makes the film kind of like "Inception"; in the regard that there's a movie within the movie, not a dream within a dream.
With "Argo" now in theaters, we thought what better way to celebrate than by making our own list of things within things. Comic book things, to be exact! These comic books within comic books are all either parodies of actual comics or metaphors for something way bigger, but they're all read by both fictional comic book characters and the real people reading those comic books.
Confused yet?...

DC Comics is pulling some interesting characters out of the past for their second wave of the New 52 relaunch. The first few books long-time fans might recognize by name are G.I. Combat, Dial H, and World's Finest. Now we get a four part mini-series which hardcore enthusiasts will be familiar with. October sees the release of Phantom Lady and Doll Man. Both characters were created by Will Eisner with Jerry Iger assisting on Phantom Lady.
After her family is killed, a woman takes on a costumed persona calling herself Phantom Lady. She uses a black light device to blind her adversaries and appear invisible. Her friend is miniaturized in a scientific accident and takes on the super hero identity of Doll Man while assisting Phantom Lady in the search.
When I saw the cover I thought to myself, "Here's another excuse to show a girl with big breasts in every panel for drooling fanboys.

Just in time for San Diego Comic-Con, Darwyn Cooke’s latest adapatation of Richard Stark’s Parker novels, The Score, hits the stands today, and you would be well-advised to hit the stands today yourself. Darwyn Cooke has blazed a trail through the comics industry since he bailed on animation back in the late ’90s, but if these adaptations do not go down in history as his greatest works, I’ll eat my hat.
It’s been a while since I’ve read the original The Score, too long a while indeed. But as usual, Cooke brings his own style to this story, the caper wherein Parker and a dozen other guys attempt to rob a town. Not the town bank or post office–the whole goddamn town. Of course, as will often happen in the Parker novels, Parker ignores his instincts to walk away from the job when he...

"We're creating a series of web comics that are freely available online for fans of a range of game titles. If you're wondering who Namco Bandai are, you must have been either locked in a nuclear bunker, or you haven't experienced the sweaty coin-shovelling thrill of arcade games.

I have to admit to being pretty excited about NetherRealm getting their hands on the Dcu again after 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. This time around, the Mortal Kombat studio is letting the house that Superman built shine on its own with a one-on-one brawler featuring some of the heavy hitters from the Dcu.
Well, based on the trailer reveal from yesterday, as well as new details from Gamespot, plus some good, educated guesses, here are ten things to watch out for with Injustice.
10. The roster is made up of "power" characters and "gadget" characters
First up, NetherRealm has divided the playable characters into two classes: heavy-hitting power characters like Superman and Wonder Woman along with weapon-using gadget characters like Harley Quinn and Batman. Creator Owned Heroes, published through Image Comics, will make its debut on June 6, 2012, but this is no ordinary comic book printing. This anthology style book is a different breed of literary and graphic experience for readers. I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to one of the collaborators on Creator Owned Heroes, Jimmy Palmiotti, at Dallas Comic Con to talk about this project as well as a new project, Retrovirus, through Kickstarter.com. Check out our conversation below:
SciFi Mafia: You have an interesting project that’s coming up published through Image Comics next month called Creator Owned Heroes.
Jimmy Palmiotti: Yeah, that’s with me, Justin Gray, Phil Noto, Steve Niles, Kevin Mellon, and Bill Tortolini, who is my designer on it and all the Image titles. What we’re doing is a monthly book with two, three, or four part stories featuring 22 pages of comics and 16 pages of editorial in the back.

Including All-Star Western in this Night of the Owls Crossover feels a little weak. For starters none of it takes place within the Night of the Owls and honestly the Owl assassin stuff in this issue feels shoe horned in to what seems to be an okay story. I didn’t read All-Star Western generally but Jonah Hex is doing everything I’d expect Jonah Hex to do and those around him seem to be pretty much what I’d expect from a comic called All-Star Western (I especially liked the look of the blonde with the throwing knives – she seemed pretty cool).
Anyway, despite the artwork from Moritat, that initially felt a little messy but has a real charm to it within the facial expressions,...

Philadelphia -- More than eight months after upending its universe of classic heroes and ongoing titles, DC Entertainment is bringing six more titles to readers, including a contemporary take on its vintage war comic, "G.I. Combat."
The book, one of six new titles in comic shops on Wednesday, features a pair of stories that focus on modern-day U.S. soldiers in situations both fantastic, chaotic and, in some cases, out of time, too.
Writer J.T. Krul's offering focuses on a pair of special forces operatives stationed aboard a U.S. Navy ship in the Sea of Japan. As it monitors North Korea, a dead zone immune to any and all radar, sonar, satellite imagery and more pops up, causing concern about what may be hiding there.
"They see this blotted out section and it definitely piques their curiosity," he said. "That's why they send the team in."

‘Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance’ Director in Negotiations to Write-Helm ‘Twisted Metal’ Adaptation
In the world of Hollywood, sometimes all it takes is to do one thing very well to give others confidence that you can do the same on a much bigger scale. Take a look at how Marc Webb handled relationships in (500) Days of Summer. Someone felt he could bring that to Amazing Spider-Man. Most recently, director Josh Trank did such a good job on Chronicle that someone has begun a rumor that he can take that vision all the way to a Fantastic Four reboot. Now, whether or not Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is going to save the that comic book franchise, remains to be seen this weekend, but at least on a visual level, the film’s co-director, Brian Taylor is being considered for a movie adaptation of the long-successful video game franchise Twisted Metal.
