Salman Rushdie Gives Passionate Speech At First Public Appearance Since Brutal Stabbing 9 Months Ago
Salman Rushdie made his return to the spotlight on Thursday, nine months after being the victim of a brutal stabbing that left him temporarily on a ventilator and unable to speak.
The 75-year-old author attended 2023 Pen America Literary Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City where he was joined on the red carpet by his wife, Rachel Eliza Griffiths.
Rushdie, who was stabbed in multiple places, including his eye at a speaking event back in August 2022, wore glasses with a shade over the affected eye.
Rushdie spoke at the event where he was honored with the Centenary Courage Award.
“Terrorism must not terrorize us. Violence must not deter us. La lutte continue. La lutta continua. The struggle goes on,” Rushdie said in his speech.
Rushdie accepted the award on behalf of the “heroes” who tackled his assailant after he was repeatedly stabbed last year.

Madrid, Oct 23 (Ians) Salman Rushdie has lost his sight in one eye and the use of one hand after the attack he suffered while preparing to deliver a lecture in the US’ New York state two months ago, his agent has confirmed, the media reported.
The 75-year-old author, whose received death threats from Iran in the 1980s after his novel ‘The Satanic Verses’ was published, was stabbed in the neck and torso as he came on stage to give a talk on artistic freedom at the Chautauqua Institution on August 12, The Guardian reported.
Until now, the full extent of Rushdie’s injuries had been unclear. But in an interview with Spain’s El Pais, Andrew Wylie explained how serious and life-changing the attack had been.

Salman Rushdie is continuing his recovery after he was stabbed at a speech at the Chautauqua Institution in New York this summer.
An update on his status was provided by his agent Andrew Wylie, who was speaking with the Spanish newspaper El País.
It had mostly been radio silence since Wylie texted “the long road to recovery has begun,” to The New York Times back in August directly after Rushdie’s stabbing.
Wylie went on to explain Rushdie’s lingering injuries he’ll be dealing with for the rest of his life in this new interview.
“He’s lost the sight of one,” Wylie first noted. “He had three serious wounds in his neck. One hand is incapacitated because the nerves in his arm were cut. And he has about 15 more wounds in his chest and torso,” the agent also explained.

The massive injuries suffered by author Salman Rushdie have been confirmed by his agent, who says Rushdie has lost eyesight in one of his eyes and use of one of his hands.
Agent Andrew Wylie told Spain’s El País about Rushdie’s condition, but would not say if the author was still hospitalized. He did note that Rushdie is expected to survive the attack he sustained while preparing to deliver a lecture in New York in August.
“[His wounds] were profound, but he’s [also] lost the si ght of one eye … He had three serious wounds in his neck. One hand is incapacitated because the nerves in his arm were cut. And he has about 15 more wounds in his chest and torso. So, it was a brutal attack,” Wylie said.
Earlier: Author Salman Rushdie has been removed from his ventilator and is starting the long road back from his stabbing injuries.

Padma Lakshmi, whose ex-husband Salman Rushdie was attacked in a brutal stabbing in Chautauqua, New York, spoke out about the agonizing worry she went through this weekend and provided a light update on his condition.
She said the novelist is now “pulling through” and said she had been “worried and wordless” following the Friday stabbing. A reporter was on site at the Chautauqua Institution where Rushdie was set to speak, but got rushed and assaulted by a lone attacker as he was being introduced.
Relieved @SalmanRushdie is pulling through after Friday’s nightmare. Worried and wordless, can finally exhale. Now hoping for swift healing.

An Iranian government official denied on Monday that Tehran was involved in the assault on author Salman Rushdie, though he justified the stabbing in remarks that represented the Islamic Republic’s first public comments on the attack.
The comments by Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, came more than two days after the attack on Rushdie in New York. The writer has now been taken off a ventilator and is “on the road to recovery,” according to his agent.
However, Iran has denied carrying out other operations abroad targeting dissidents in the years since the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, despite prosecutors and Western governments attributing such attacks back to Tehran. And while Iran hasn’t focused on the writer in recent years, a decades-old fatwa demanding his killing still stands.

Updated Monday: The Iranian government has denied any involvement in the attack on Salman Rushdie, according to the Associated Press.
Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said in a briefing to journalists on Monday: “We, in the incident of the attack on Salman Rushdie in the U.S., do not consider that anyone deserves blame and accusations except him and his supporters. Nobody has right to accuse Iran in this regard.”
“By insulting the sacred matters of Islam and crossing the red lines of more than 1.5 billion Muslims and all followers of the divine religions, Salman Rushdie has exposed himself to the anger and rage of the people,” Kanaani added.

The Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie was taken off a ventilator and able to talk Saturday, a day after he was stabbed as he prepared to give a lecture in upstate New York.
Rushdie remained hospitalized with serious injuries, but fellow author Aatish Taseer tweeted in the evening that he was “off the ventilator and talking (and joking).” Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, confirmed that information without offering further details.
Earlier in the day, the man accused of attacking him Friday at the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education and retreat center, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges in what a prosecutor called a “preplanned” crime.

Bill Maher devoted time during his latest episode of HBO’s Real Time to honoring his close friend Salman Rushdie, who was stabbed Friday just before giving a lecture in Western New York.
Maher sat down with guests Piers Morgan and writer Rikki Schlott, and at the start of the segment, he explained that his mind was on the attack. Rushdie, whose 1988 novel The Satanic Verses was viewed as blasphemous by many Muslims, was on a ventilator and likely to lose an eye from the attack, according to a statement late Friday from his agent, Andrew Wylie.
“First, I have to say something — it’s somewhat personal but also national news,” Maher said. “A dear friend of mine, good friend of this show, got stabbed today, Salman Rushdie. I’m sure people have seen this news.”
Maher continued by discussing his feelings surrounding the Islamic faith.

It’s funny that this week’s installment of The Good Wife makes multiple references to Spider-Man (and its head-scratching number of reboots). Because as Alicia Florrick so cruelly learns, it can be a silly and treacherous thing to place one’s fate in a white knight upon a fiery steed.

The Good Wife, Season 6, Episode 18: “Loser Edit”
Written by Luke Schelhaas
Directed by Brooke Kennedy
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on CBS
When word came down that “Loser Edit” would be another issue-driven episode of The Good Wife – this time, gay marriage was to be the focal point – there was a collective cringe. Was this to be another “Debate” scenario? The good news is that no, The Good Wife didn’t shoot itself in the foot to that degree this week. On the other hand, “Loser Edit” feels very much of a piece with much of the so-so back half of this troubled season: where The Good Wife once exhilarated, it now mostly ticks off plot-beat boxes, however pleasurably.
