Hulu has been investing in the horror market lately, so it’s nice to see them getting outside the normal possession or curse stuff. And if there’s any type of film that we sorely need more of, it’s scale alien invasion films. These more personal tales always feel so much more real than the more bombastic and planet-shattering ones. No One Will Save You is more akin to A Quiet Place. We’re focusing on one person during what is clearly a planetwide event. While I wasn’t entirely totally sold on the film (check out my review), I had a great time talking to writer/director Brian Duffield. This was clearly a passion project for him; he knew the star he had in Kaitlyn Dever and how to utilize her properly. And she sounds like an absolute sweetheart. Check out the video above!

For those who watched Dan Trachtenberg‘s amazing Predator prequel Prey on Hulu last summer, you are in for another terrific sci-fi film.
Hulu is streaming No One Will Save You on Sept. 22, 2023, in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
An Invasion Is Imminent, according to Brian Duffield, who wrote and directed 20th Century Studios’ “No One Will Save You,” a sci-fi psychological thriller told through the eyes of a lonely young woman with a painful backstory. “I wanted the movie to take the lead of a small intimate character study and drop an alien invasion on top of them,” says Duffield. “The end of the world won’t only be for those that are ready for it, and the idea of an alien movie rudely bursting the bubble our character has spent years building and cultivating felt like a unique way to tell a favorite story.

The horror film No One Will Save You depicts alien abduction like a house invasion thriller.
No One Will Save You, an alien invasion horror film, is one of Hulu’s Halloween treats this year, and a first-look teaser has just been released. Home invasion films are so popular because they show fright without fear.
Every one of us shudders when we imagine the terror and shock of strangers entering our house. But what if that “stranger” wasn’t just any ordinary “stranger?”It’s rare that an alien invasion movie and a horror film collide, but the effects may be explosive when they do.

Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” will close out AFI Fest on Oct. 29.
The film which screened at the Venice Film Festival to a 7-minute standing ovation follows the life of legendary stage composer Leonard Bernstein and his relationship with Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan).
“’Mastro’ displays Bradley Cooper’s symphony of talent with the power of a cymbal crash,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “It is AFI’s honor to shine a light upon this extraordinary work of art on the festival’s Closing Night.”
Aside from directing and starring in the film, Cooper co-wrote the script with Josh Singer. The supporting cast includes Matt Bomer (as Bernstein’s lover), Maya Hawke (as Bernstein’s daughter Jamie) and Sarah Silverman (as Bernstein’s sister Shirley).

The trailer for 20th Century Studios’ No One Will Save You kicks off with a home invasion of a different sort. The intruder announces its presence with a growl, confirming there’s something inhuman entering the house. And rather than draw out the tease, the trailer wraps up with a quick shot of the alien invader.
Writer/director Brian Duffield follows up his directorial debut Spontaneous with this sci-fi thriller, which focuses on the alien invasion through the eyes of a young woman named Brynn.

Aliens have arrived, and that may be just one of Kaitlyn Dever’s problems, in the new trailer for “No One Will Save You.” The sophomore effort from director Brian Duffield, whose “Spontaneous” was an unusually of-the-moment horror parable for kids growing up in an era of mass shootings and climate change, arrives on Hulu courtesy of 20th Century Studios on Sept. 22.
Dever stars as Brynn, who puts up a surprising amount of resistance when aliens show up on her doorstep. We then get a montage of our heroine doing her best to fend off the intergalactic menace, including period details like a rotary telephone and what looks to be 1970s wardrobes.

Some people will do anything to move up the corporate ladder regardless of who gets hurt. In Fair Play, director/writer Chloe Domont puts a 21st century spin on classic eighties and nineties style corporate thrillers. Imagine a movie like Disclosure from a female perspective or if the Michael Douglas character happened to be a raving psychopath.
In Fair Play, an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Domont directs from a script she wrote, with Phoebe Dynevor starring as the crumbling couple. The World’s End and 21 Grams actor Eddie Marsan also stars as a corporate puppetmaster pulling the young couple’s strings.

Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor have a tough time navigating a clandestine romance while competing for a coveted job promotion in the first trailer for the Netflix thriller Fair Play.
From writer and director Chloe Domont, the movie was a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and focuses on Luke (Ehrenreich) and Emily (Dynevor), co-workers at a high-powered hedge fund firm who have recently gotten engaged. While they continue to keep the relationship a secret, dynamics between the pair get tense as both aim to achieve professional gains despite the costs.
In the trailer that was released Tuesday ahead of the film’s Oct. 13 streaming launch, Dyvenor’s Emily says, “We both can’t keep working here.” This leads Ehrenreich’s Luke to reply, “I’m not quitting.”
Later, Emily asks, “Why is it so hard to accept that I deserve that job?”
Eddie Marsan, Rich Sommer and Sebastian De Souza also star.

Netflix has released the first trailer for the erotic thriller “Fair Play,” which the streamer acquired for $20 million in one of the biggest deals out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
“Bridgerton” star Phoebe Dynevor and “Oppenheimer” actor Alden Ehrenreich star in the film, which unravels the complex relationship of a power-hungry couple contending for power at a cutthroat financial firm. “Fair Play” marks writer-director Chloe Domont’s debut feature film, following her time helming episodes of the HBO series “Ballers” and Showtime’s “Billions.” The film also stars Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”), Rich Sommer (“Mad Men”) and Sebastian De Souza (“The Great”).
Following its premiere, “Fair Play” sparked a bidding war among several key distributors, including Searchlight and Neon.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “When a coveted promotion at a cutthroat financial firm arises, once supportive exchanges between lovers Emily (Dynevor) and Luke (Ehrenreich) begin to sour into something more sinister.

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play” sparked one of the few bidding wars at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and Netflix has dropped the first trailer for all to see. At a festival where even seemingly surefire titles like “Cat Person” went without a buyer, “Fair Play” was snagged f0r $20 million from Netflix. That’s shy of the record $25 million that Apple paid for eventual Best Picture Oscar winner “Coda,” but who’s counting?
The relationship drama/corporate melodrama stars Phoebe Dynevor (“Bridgerton”) and Alden Ehrenreich (“Oppenheimer”) as a pair of co-workers secretly dating who come to emotional blows over a coveted promotion. The young lovers struggle with the price of success and the limits of professional ambition as writer/director Domont’s feature debut deconstructs the destructive gender dynamics that can pit partners against each other amid a rapidly transforming world.

About fifteen months ago, we heard that 20th Century Studios had acquired the rights to a psychological thriller called No One Will Save You, which would be written and directed by Brian Duffield and had Booksmart (watch it Here) star Kaitlyn Dever attached to star in it. That project has since made its way through production, and it has been announced that it’s going to be released through the Hulu streaming service on September 22nd.
No One Will Save You will be available to watch exclusively through Hulu in the U.S. It will be streaming on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ in all other territories.
Duffield previously wrote The Babysitter, Underwater, and Love and Monsters, and made his directorial debut with Spontaneous. The story he crafted for this film introduces Brynn Adams (Dever), a creative and talented young woman who’s been alienated from her community.

Writer/filmmaker Brian Duffield had one hell of a 2020, writing the films Underwater and Love & Monsters, as well as writing and directing one of the year’s very best, Spontaneous. Up next from Duffield is a movie titled No One Will Save You, and today brings a first look.
Starring Kaitlyn Dever, the sci-fi psychological thriller begins streaming on September 22, exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
Duffield tweets this afternoon, “If you wanted a movie where a bunch of greys try to abduct Kaitlyn Dever and she keeps being like, no thank you, we made that movie.”

In a massive deal, Sundance standout Fair Play has sold to Netflix.
It’s the first whopper deal to come from a sales title and one that begat a bidding war when it premiered Saturday. Searchlight, Lionsgate and Neon were among those in the running, with the final price tag in the 20 million range. Netflix had no comment on the financial aspects of the deal.
The feature debut from Chloe Domont, Play follows Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich), a newly engaged couple who work at a high-powered New York finance company, whose relationship is thrown into disarray when Emily gets promoted ahead of Luke. The movie is Domont’s feature film debut after making a name for herself directing shorts and television episodes of such shows as Billions, Suits and Ballers.

Chloe Domont’s “Fair Play,” a Wall Street drama that has premiered at Sundance, sold to Netlfix in a 20 million worldwide rights deal, according to an individual with knowledge of the deal.
“Fair Play” is led by “Solo” star Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor as Luke and Emily, co-workers at a financial firm who are deeply in love and about to be engaged. But their relationship falls apart when Emily gets a promotion at their firm, leading to a change in power dynamics that poisons their personal lives and eventually leads to violence. Eddie Marsan and Rich Sommer also star in the film.
The film sparked a bidding war that included Searchlight and Neon. It fell short of the 25 million record for a Sundance sale, set in 2021 by Apple’s “Coda,” but did surpass the 17.5 million of the previous record holders — 2020’s “Palm Springs” and 2016’s “The Birth of a Nation.

“Fair Play,” one of the buzziest movies to premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, has sold to Netflix in a massive 20 million deal. The pact is for global rights.
Given the warm reception, the film sparked a bidding war among several key distributors, including Searchlight and Neon. It’s not the only film drawing intense interest — John Carney’s “Flora and Son,” a musical drama with Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is also attracting several bidders, according to sources.
Chloe Domont directed “Fair Play” in her feature debut. In the psychological thriller, “Bridgerton” breakout Phoebe Dynevor and “Solo” star Alden Ehrenreich play a newly engaged couple who keeps their relationship a secret because they work together at a cut-throat hedge fund. When Dynevor’s character Emily gets promoted over Ehrenreich’s Luke, the couple’s power dynamic shifts irrevocably.

Danyel Smith knows charts and awards are flawed metrics of success, but she also understands they are the ones we have, and wants to see Black women earn their due. This is not an abstract goal to the legendary music journalist. Serena Williams isn’t opposed to a King Richard sequel.
In an interview with Insider, the tennis star mentioned how she’s interested in the story of her and her sister expanded upon in theaters. There’s definitely more to the story as Serena has her own journey to success that of course isn’t the same as from her sister’s.
“King Richard had a perfect ending with Venus on the tennis court. Venus goes in her direction, and I go in my direction,” Serena explained. “It’s two completely different stories.” However, reliving those moments of her life could prove difficult for Williams to watch.
“I had a rough journey,” she said. “I didn’t do well and then I did. It’s a lot of drama. It’s a telenovela.”

The feud between Will Smith and Chris Rock prior to the infamous “Oscar slap” goes back at least six years, according to sources.
At the Governors Ball immediately following the telecast, Smith was the center of nearly every conversation. After congratulatory moments with nominees and winners like Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”), Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) and Marlee Matlin, co-star of “Coda” which won best picture, everyone had wide eyes and questions about whether the assault was staged. Even the creative team behind Smith’s Oscar-winning role in “King Richard” seemed to be having difficulty processing the actor’s outburst.
“I’ve known Will for two years and I’ve never known him to be like that,” “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green told Variety. “I’ve never even heard him raise his voice.”
Tim White and Trevor White, the Oscar-nominated producers for the film, were also shocked. “I have no idea what happened,...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. Apple Studios emerged the big winner of what some say is an important Oscar precursor on Saturday night, as “Coda” took the top film prize at the annual Producers Guild Awards.
What began as a Sundance sales sensation directed by Sian Heder — the heart-tugging story following the only hearing family member in a tribe of charismatic New England fishermen — won the Darryl F. Zanuck award for best motion picture producing. Other notable film winners at Los Angeles’ Fairmont Hotel were Questlove’s “Summer of Soul” for documentary feature, and the musical juggernaut “Encanto” for best producers of an animated film.
“Succession” took home the Norman Felton Award for outstanding episodic drama. Apple’s “Ted Lasso” continued its trophy collection spree by claiming the Danny Thomas Award for outstanding television comedy. HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” won the David L. Wolper award for outstanding producer of a limited series.

Steven Spielberg cited the hit Netflix Korean drama Squid Game as a game changer for the industry. Spielberg was among the nominated producers for the PGA Awards Zanuck Award speaking on a panel Saturday Morning at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles.
“Squid Game comes along and changes the math entirely for all of us,” Spielberg said. “Thank you, Ted [Sarandos].”
Spielberg pointed to the Netflix CEO, who was sitting in the audience. His Squid Game comment came during a discussion about the importance of movie stars in casting. Spielberg noted the cyclical nature of the star system, crediting the streaming world with allowing unknown actors to anchor series.
“A long time ago it was domestic stars that brought the audience into movies,” Spielberg said. “Today, it’s interesting, unknown people can star entire miniseries, can be in movies.”

This story about Zach Baylin first appeared in the Down to the Wire Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The assignment was simple, according to “King Richard” producer Tim White. “It was a case,” he said, “of going to a writer and saying, ‘It has to be the one script that everyone in town is talking about. Go.’”
The writer he settled on was Zach Baylin, who’d never before had a produced script. Fortunately for Baylin, Tim White and his brother and partner Trevor White weren’t quite so explicit about saying they needed him to produce Hollywood’s buzziest screenplay for their film about Richard Williams, the hard-driving father of future tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. “I don’t know if they let me into the room that much at the beginning,” said Baylin, who ended up landing an Oscar nomination with his first feature screenplay credit.

Aunjanue Ellis was content being a journeywoman actor in the business and providing for her family — but now the acclaim is pouring in.
And yes, that includes an Oscar nomination for her role as Oracene ‘Brandy’ Williams in Reinaldo Marcus Green’s “King Richard.” On the latest episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we talk to Ellis about what it feels like to now be an Academy Award nominated actress, which she still can’t say out loud. It was decades before “King Richard” earned six 2022 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and put star Will Smith in a position to win his first-ever Academy Award when producer Tim White first encountered the story of Richard Williams and his daughters Venus and Serena Williams.
“I grew up playing junior tennis around the circuit and I remember everyone was talking about Richard. He was this sort of controversial guy who was holding up signs during the matches and who was giving all these crazy interviews,” White tells Gold Derby in a new interview. One sign, in particular, stuck with White: At the 1999 Lipton Championship, when Venus and Serena became the first sisters to meet in a tournament final in 115 years, Richard was in the stands holding up a sign that read, “I told you so.”

This year’s show became a battle of cinematic royalty, beginning with a duel twenty years in the making. In 2001 Denzel Washington faced off against Will Smith in the Outstanding Actor category with Washington’s performance in Training Day beating out Smith’s work in Ali. In the return match, Smith proved he is the reigning king with his role in King Richard receiving the Outstanding Actor award over Washington’s “king” in The Tragedy of Macbeth. King Richard also claimed the awards for Outstanding Film and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Aunjanue Ellis).

Will Smith scored his third and fourth Oscar nominations this morning as the star and producer of King Richard, doubling his Oscar nominations haul and becoming only the ninth producer-actor to nab both nominations for the same film. “It’s six nominations total,” Smith tells Deadline, “and this is rarefied air for me. I’ve been nominated two other times, but it’s never been this kind of blanket love, you know?”
In addition to his Best Actor nod, and the Best Picture nomination he shares with Tim White and Trevor White, the film has been recognized for Zach Baylin’s Original Screenplay, Dixson and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s Original Song and Pamela Martin’s Editing. Aunjanue Ellis, who plays Oracene Price opposite Smith’s Richard Williams, was recognized in Supporting Actress.
It means so much to him, Smith says, because there wasn’t a part of the process he didn’t relish.
