A fresh set of actors are about to be enrolled in what the film series cast cheekily nicknamed ‘the Harry Potter Pension plan’. US streamer Max’s plan to re-adapt the Potter books into a TV show running for 10 consecutive years and starting in 2025/6 should keep the lucky new cast in greasepaint and copies of The Stage indefinitely.
But who will they be? Lead characters Harry, Ron and Hermione will almost certainly be played by unknowns, but the Hogwarts ensemble – Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, Hagrid and co. – will be picked from the current crop of British acting talent, just like their counterparts were over two decades ago. Who working today could follow in the footsteps of Sir Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Dame Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane and the rest?
While it’s too early for any solid cast news, there’s no harm in a bit of dream-casting at this point,...

A Christmas turkey is a long-held tradition for carnivorous Brits – but how about something different this year? Say, a (pre-)Christmas chicken? All of which is a ridiculous way of saying, the long-awaited Chicken Run sequel Dawn Of The Nugget finally had a release date – and it’s coming our way in the festive period. Netflix to the beloved 2000 original will be hatching on 15 December.
The sequel – from director Sam Fell, and writers Karey Kirkpatrick (who penned the original), John O’Farrell and Rachel Tunnard – will return to the Tweedy’s Farm escapees, bringing back familiar faces like Ginger, Rocky, Babs and Bunty, while also introducing Ginger and Rocky’s young chick, Molly. And, as the title suggests, after having narrowly avoided being turned into pies, the chickens face an even more terrifying culinary innovation: chicken nuggets.
While the original characters are returning, the voice cast features some changeover – Thandiwe Newton...

“Johnny! Johnny!! Johnny!!! Johnny Depp!!!!” The celebrity dutifully signed autographs for his followers on the red carpet for the premiere of Jeanne du Barry, director Maiwenn’s Cannes Film Festival opener.
And let’s call him that “c” word, because to call him an actor in the true sense of the profession is an insult to thespians who toil on stage and screen for little gain. Judi Dench lamented once that, in the UK at least, roughly 5 percent of the actors make big bucks. The rest live hand-to-mouth, often doing two, three or more jobs to make ends meet.
So forgive me if I don’t jump up and down with glee at the sight of Johnny Depp and his Louis Xv in Jeanne du Barry.
Once up a time he was the bee’s knees; he had a certain swagger about him. But of late, he seems to have...

Ben Bailey-Smith, known to many by his stage name Doc Brown, injected new life into the British comedy landscape with his brilliant and unique blend of rapping and comedic flair, leading him to major projects alongside the likes of Ricky Gervais in David Brent: Life on the Road.
