Turkish-French-Romanian co-production “Between Two Dawns,” helmed by Turkish writer-director Selman Nacar and produced by Burak Çevik of Kuyu Film and Diloy Gülün of Karma Films, is taking part in Wip Europa – a section devoted to projects in post-production – at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
At Wip Europe, the filmmakers showed a picture-locked version of the film, a drama that takes place when a worker is severely injured in a sheet factory run by the family of Kadir. To protect the family business, Kadir is forced to conspire in a cover-up that alters the lives of the people involved and unveils long-held secrets.
“The film takes place over the course of 24 hours,” says Nacar. “I always wanted to make a film that takes place over a short amount of time. Then I want to show how human beings can change psychologically and emotionally in that short time. The scenes are all filmed in one shot.

The organisers have chosen to prioritise domestic movies for its outdoor edition, as Romanian directors and producers will be able to attend the screenings. As usual, the films in the Romanian competition were either produced or co-produced by a Romanian production company or explore a local topic, despite being produced by a foreign entity. The jury, consisting of Romanian producer-director Oana Giurgiu, Bucharest-based American film critic Steve Rickinson and Cineuropa’s own Ştefan Dobroiu, will hand out two awards: Best Documentary in the Romanian Competition and Best Director in the Romanian...

15 feature films, 12 first-feature films, 31 short films and 16 documentaries were competing for the second 2010 contest of Romanian National Film Center of Cinematography. Only a few of them received some money though. The biggest grant (over 480.000$) was given to (see above) Andrei Gruzsnizcki’s Evadarea (The Escape), the director’s second feature, after Cealaltă Irina (The Other Irina). Its story happens during winter so the shooting will start most probably at the end of this year and will continue in the first few months of 2012. The Escape is produced by Icon Production, the company that has made the most acclaimed Romanian documentary in years – The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu. Corneliu Gherghiță’s Domnul de la Curte received the second biggest grant (over 432.000$), while Călin Netzer’s Poziția copilului (The Child’s Position) with the screenplay written by Răzvan Rădulescu grabbed almost 350.000$. Other feature films that received money from the Romanian National Center...
