Cinegoers missed Salman Khan this Eid because of the lukewarm response at the box office. A clash of the titans was expected as Ajay Devgn was locking horns with Akshay Kumar. But the numbers seem to be getting for the former, and below are the latest advance booking updates!
The biographical sports drama is based on the life of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Ajay Devgn plays the titular role, while Priyamani plays his wife, Saira Rahim. Biopics have worked very well in Bollywood, and the word-of-mouth for Maidaan seems to be finally picking up momentum, too.

Ajay Devgn led Maidaan released on the occasion of Eid but could hardly benefit from the festival. The film was expected to witness a big box office clash with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, but unfortunately, that is not the case. The biographical sports drama has even remained lower than Akshay Kumar starrer in terms of worldwide collections at the box office. Scroll below for all the details!
Maidaan is based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, a pioneering football coach in India between 1952 and 1962. We have previously seen sports biopics perform well in India. Whether it was Ms Dhoni: The Untold Story, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Chak De! India or Dangal, these films attracted a lot of footfall at the ticket windows. But in the case of Ajay Devgn’s film, the pre-release buzz in itself was not upto the mark.

800 (Hindi)
Enough! Let’s not waste time making or watching biopics on gangsters and criminals. Writer-director M.S Sripathy’s 800 tells us why. A biopic burnished in unassuming emotions, it is the story of Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan who took an unprecedented number of wickets, thereby creating history.
This commendable film on Muttiah Muralitharan’s life and game, doesn’t quite create history. But it, well, bowls you over with its unflinching determination to tell the truth about what it means to be a Tamilian Sri Lankan cricketer (that’s three levels of hurdle already huddled in a corner for our hero to overcome).
800 is a work of uninterrupted sincerity. The actors, their accents and the locations where Muralitharan’s journey unfolds are so artless, it would be heartless to utter a word against the charming endeavour.Thankfully, the Caucasian actors playing Australian members of the cricket...

We all know about the on-field journey of the Sri Lankan spin maestro Muttiah Muralitharan. Every cricket lover has seen his impressive bowling during intense tournaments, but this is the first time audiences are being introduced to the story of the real struggles of this living legend off the cricket field – from being oppressed, mistreated, attacked, bullied to taking everything in his stride and becoming the highest wicket taker in the history of the game.
Coming from a poor family, and going through riots, Muralitharan’s story as chronicled in the film will inspire you to dream, and follow it.
Based on true incidents from the life of the first Sri Lankan to be inducted into the Icc Hall of Fame, played on screen by Madhur Mittal, the sports drama is not just a treat for cricket fans, but also a story that channelises emotions and narrates the heart-breaking tale of someone who,...

Mad Men's Jon Hamm stars in Disney baseball drama Million Dollar Arm, based on the true story of a sports agent who staged a reality TV show to find baseball talent in India.
The movie sees Jb Bernstein (Hamm) discover Indian pitchers Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal) and Rinku Singh (Suraj Sharma), after 40,000 contestants audition with their transferable cricket skills.
Million Dollar Arm review: Jon Hamm in warm, witty baseball drama
Best known for playing the role of Salim Malik in the Danny Boyle hit Slumdog Millionaire, Mittal is a fast-bowling cricket player in the Walt Disney project.
Director Craig Gillespie helmed the project, which was filmed in Mumbai and Atlanta in 2013.
In an interview with Digital Spy, producer Mark Ciardi described the origins of the story.
"I knew Jb well before I was involved in the film," he explained. "I ran into him in 2007 at a function, asked him what he was doing.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, Million Dollar Arm is a heart-warming and well-told tale that remains appealing in spite of its unsubtlety, and you certainly don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy it.
Based on a true story, Million Dollar Arm focuses on J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm), a floundering sports agent who is in desperate need of a big signing. Late night channel-flipping between a cricket match and Susan Boyle’s ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ brings inspiration (as it so often does) and soon Bernstein is journeying to India to host a talent competition that will determine which would-be cricketers have the best chance at being groomed into baseball players. Returning to America with the contest winners Rinku Singh (Life of Pi’s Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal) in tow, the two prospects soon begin training under unorthodox coach Tom House (Bill Paxton), but have...

Prior to Million Dollar Arm, Madhur Mittal’s biggest role had been in Danny Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire. In both films he manages to leave a lasting impression, and we can only hope to see more of the up and coming actor in future.
Ahead of this week’s UK release of Million Dollar Arm we sat down with Mittal and the film’s producer Mark Ciardi to quiz them on their favourite sports flicks, how they adapt when they’re out of their comfort zones, and much more. We also promised Madhur we’d get the word out on his days as a Michael Jackson impersonator. Regretfully, a dance-off did not take place. Have a watch below.
Million Dollar Arm is released on August 29, and you can also check out our interview with the film’s star Jon Hamm here.

Director Craig Gillespie; Screenwriter Thomas McCarthy; Starring: Jon Hamm, Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal, Lake Bell, Alan Arkin; Running time: 124 mins; Certificate: PG
In between Mad Men seasons, Jon Hamm has understandably steered away from roles that could be seen as riffs on the Don Draper persona - he'll pop up as the sleazy booty call in Bridesmaids, or the dangerously dumb Dr Drew in 30 Rock. But the affable Million Dollar Arm opens with Hamm's sports agent Jb Bernstein practising his smooth, confident pitch for a prospective new client.
This might be in the ballpark of the Draper hard sell, but here nobody's buying it. Bernstein's independent management company has hit the skids, with most of their star players now past their prime, and behind the slick exterior lies desperation: he urgently needs to sign new star talent in order to turn things around. So begins a true story which Thomas McCarthy...

The UK release of Million Dollar Arm is just few days away and actor Jon Hamm took some time from his busy agenda last week to come to London to promote the film and we were there. The London Indian Film Festival hosted the UK premier of Disney’s Million Dollar Arm yesterday and it was attended by producer Mark Ciardi and actor Madhur Mittal amongst a host of other showbiz celebrities including Meera Syal, Kulvinder Ghir, Ameet Chana, Tanveer Ghani, Tanya Franks and Neerja Naik.
The film, which was well received by the excited audience, was followed by a Q&A session with Mark and Madhur, mediated by Sunny and Shay (BBC London 94.9). Much of the audience’s interest revolved around shooting in India, the cast’s chemistry and the film’s basis on a true story.
Mark shared his experiences of struggling in the heat of India, catching Delhi Belly and having to accommodate the incredible Alan Arkin’s requests for filtered water due to his nervousness at catching something whilst filming. He also disclosed his own past experiences of playing baseball and modelling!

Walt Disney Pictures has found great success in past years with based on true story sport films. Movies like The Rookie, Miracle, and Invincible took accounts of people overcoming insurmountable odds and added the classic Disney methodology. Million Dollar Arm shares many similar inherit qualities with those past Disney properties—human drama with a universal charm, broad comedic moments to lighten the mood, and a family friendly appeal that makes it easier to forgive the strong addiction to cliché storytelling. Million Dollar Arm is not much more than an enhanced TV movie, nevertheless its likeable personality makes it worth your time.

One major criticism against Disney’s Million Dollar Arm is that it should have focused on the two Indian characters, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh (portrayed by Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal), rather than white sports agent J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm). After all, the real story there is that two young foreigners won a reality show and in turn experienced the American Dream by coming to the U.S. and signing to a major league baseball organization. Focusing on Bernstein has the stink of the “White Man’s Burden” trope, as if he’s a hero for discovering and then saving them from a life of poverty more than they’re heroes on their own for being talented — and, yes, lucky to a degree, but mostly for their own athletic achievement. If only there was a documentary version. As I looked into the making of Million Dollar Arm it made me even more disappointed that one...

The film Million Dollar Arm is a family-friendly drama that is based on the real-life story of the first Indian athletes to become involved with any major American sports franchise. The film was directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Tom McCarthy. Neither gentleman has a huge list of credits to their respective professions but what they do have is largely decent quality and have latched onto a real sports underdog story here that is produced by Disney.
The story involves a down and out sports agent, J. B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm), who gets the desperate yet brilliant idea to go to India and scout for pitching prospects. The plan is to develop the winners of a pitching contest/reality show, called Million Dollar Arm, and sign them for a Major League Baseball deal. Million Dollar Arm
Written by Tom McCarthy
Directed by Craig Gillespie
USA, 2014
There’s a scene roughly halfway through Million Dollar Arm that speaks to the film’s inherently generic nature. In it, our ostensible hero, workaholic agent/pitchman Don Draper—er, J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm) is brought in to talk with USC baseball coach Tom House (Bill Paxton) to talk about Bernstein’s two Indian prospects and the recent troubles and frustrations they’ve faced. House alludes to the fact that one of the boys lashed out at a USC player who called him a derogatory name, presumably a race-based one. Bernstein asks, “What’d they call him?” House says, “That doesn’t matter.” The issue is never again broached or even referenced by any of the characters (and none of the USC players are even given dialogue). That a Disney movie would shy away from even a...

Things, however, don’t always go according to plan. The boys have never lived outside of their small village, so Jb is forced to take them in and care for them, shaking up his bachelor lifestyle. Baseball sports agent, India, pitching contest...does that make for a good movie? Absolutely, say Kpf's Movie Star Movie Crix Joel Courtney from Super 8 and Kat McNamara of Contest. Check out their review for Million Dollar Arm:
"Disney has done it again and created yet another inspiring sports film to follow in the footsteps of The Rookie and Remember the Titans. Million Dollar Arm follows the story of Jb Bernstein, a sports agent who tries to revive his lulled career by finding two protégés from India and turning them into Major League Baseball pitchers. This film is so heartfelt and inspirational, perfect for sports fans and families everywhere.
"Standout performances include, of course Jon Hamm as Jb, Alan Arkin as disgruntled scout Ray Poitevint, Madhur Mittal and Suraj Sharma as the two young men whose lives are forever changed, and Pitobash as Amit - the overly enthusiastic translator.

We have seen him give scene-stealing performances in Shor In The City, Shanghai and I Am Kalam. Now Pitobash Tripathy is the latest Bollywood actor to make an impact in Hollywood. Pitobash's bravura act in Craig Gillespie's Million Dollar Arm has won him a new fan following in the West. Million Dollar Arm, the newest story of ordinary guys trying out for the big leagues, is in the same division as efforts like The Rookie and Invincible. Like those emotionally charged dramas, the film is as safe as it surefire entertainment. The twist here is that the two players we follow on the road from poverty to the pitching mound did not know how to play baseball, or even how to wear a glove. Their names are Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel and they were plucked from obscurity in India to travel to the United States and finesse their throwing technique in a bid to become major league pitchers.
