Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?
Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.
After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.
However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

Candace Cameron Bure is taking some lumps today after explaining why she left Hallmark for Gac Family. Actress Hilarie Burton Morgan, in particular, had a few choice words for the Fuller House actress, who said in a recent Wall Street Journal article that “I knew the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”
“Bigot,” Morgan responded via Twitter. “I don’t remember Jesus liking hypocrites like Candy. But sure. Make your money, honey. You ride that prejudice wave all the way to the bank.”
Morgan also tweeted “now they’re just openly admitting their bigotry. I called this shit out years ago when Abbott was at Hallmark. Glad they dumped him. Being LGBTQ isn’t a ‘trend.’ That guy and his network are disgusting. You too Candy. There is nothing untraditional about same sex-couples.”

Television is steadily becoming a fantasy fan’s best friend. With shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, House of the Dragon, The Witcher, and The Sandman making significant strides in the genre, it’s no wonder that Universal TV and Radar Pictures are adapting Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar literary universe. That’s right, my fellow fans of LGBTQ content, get ready for The Heralds of Valdemar!
The first season is adapting Lackey’s Lambda Award-winning “Last Herald-Mage” trilogy, featuring the character Vanyel Ashkevron, who grows into one of the most potent magic-users ever conceived. Beyond being a badass spell slinger, Van is famous in the literary community for being “the first openly gay heroic protagonist in the fantasy genre.” Representation matters, especially in the fantasy genre, where people from all walks of life come to go beyond the limits of reality.

Refresh for updates: Former President Donald Trump eulogized Rush Limbaugh on Fox News today by noting, “People whether they loved him or not, they respected him.”
Apparently Trump hasn’t been keeping up with Twitter since getting booted from the platform.
“Rush Limbaugh already started a radio show in Hell,” tweeted Saturday Night Live‘s Luke Null, “and is ranting about how the devil should shut the fiery gates because all these Outsiders are ruining everything!”
Satirist Randy Rainbow offered a succinct, “Bye gurl. Amen.”
With a flood of social media posts compiling the many racist, homophobic, misogynistic and just plain cruel comments made by the right-wing radio host over the years, his supporters certainly made their voices heard too.

Brea Grant, at least for me, first came to prominence after appearing in Heroes, the mid-2000s superhero show that took the world by storm for about a season but never truly recovering post-writers strike. Since then she’s appeared in a number of other genre shows and movies, including The Guild, Game Shop, Worry Dolls and Beyond the Gates. However alongside her acting roles Grant has been slowing progressing as both writer and director; and this year she has not one but two genre films under her belt – writing and starring in Lucky; and writing and directing this hospital-set horror, 12 Hour Shift.

Now here is one dark premise – a nurse who funds her drug addiction by killing her patients and selling their organs. Some may see this as a nod to the organ theft legend of the 1990s, while others may recall the numerous ‘Angel of Death’ cases. Either way, there is always comedy to be found in the darkest of subjects.
The nurse in question is Mandy (Angela Bettis), a misanthrope who lives for smoke breaks and crushed opiates. Bettis does good work here, lending her character a disdainful crabbiness, especially when confronted by her peers’ intrusive small talk. Mandy bides her time until the small hours, when she can continue her lucrative organ trafficking. However, things go awry when she recruits Regina (Chloe Farnworth), her idiotic cousin, to act as a delivery driver.

Tagline: "Pull Your Shift Together." 12 Hour Shift is dark comedy from director Brea Grant (After Midnight). This film had its International Premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, in Montreal recently. Shot in Jonesboro, Arkansas, this title is already getting set to show on home entertainment formats throughout North America. The film stars: David Arquette (The Tripper), Angela Bettis, former professional wrestler Mick Foley and Kit Williamson. The story takes place in 1999, over a double-shift in the hospital. Here, underground organ harvesting and selling are taking place. Now, a few release details are available for 12 Hour Shift. A few early reviews have come out this Summer. Mitch Davis talks about the story and Mandy's (Bettis) drug addiction: "for one, because she’s an addict, and the extra pay will go a long way. More importantly, she needs to go because it’s the hospital work that funds her habit.

Hospitalization proves more than usually fatal in “12 Hour Shift,” a bloody black comedy from actress turned writer-director Brea Grant. This clever mix of the farcical and macabre finds shady nurse Angela Bettis’ sideline in illicit organ harvesting going seriously awry during an extra-long work stint at a 1999 Arkansas care facility. Although closer to the twistedly gallows-humorous likes of “The Hospital” and Scorcese’s underrated “Bringing Out the Dead” than the sizable subgenre of hospital horror mellers, it will most likely find an appreciative initial audience among genre fans. Magnet plans release to available theaters and on demand Oct. 2, following a brief, Covid-hobbled festival tour.
Though she started out in prestige dramatic roles for Zeffirelli and James Mangold, Bettis became a favorite for horror aficionados as of 2002, via title roles in both indie cult object “May” and a TV “Carrie.” Her forays into that territory invariably up the movie’s game,...

Sixteen-year-old Randy Kapplehoff loves spending the summer at Camp Outland, a camp for queer teens. It’s where he met his best friends. It’s where he takes to the stage in the big musical. And it’s where he fell for Hudson Aaronson-Lim – who’s only into straight-acting guys and barely knows not-at-all-straight-acting Randy even exists. Randy reinvents himself over the summer as Del, a buff, masculine and on-the-market camper. Even if it means giving up show tunes, nail polish, and his unicorn bedsheets, he’s determined to get Hudson to fall for him.

“EastSiders” is an Emmy-nominated dark comedy about a gay couple and their friends in Silver Lake, Calif. For creator/star Kit Williamson, the seven-year journey of making the series — which began as a $2,000 self-financed project, and ended with its fourth and final season dropping on Netflix back in December — has been an education. Along the way, he’s shared his insights with IndieWire about why actors should consider making a web series, what you need to consider before starting an indie series, his secrets to successfully crowdfunding, and how he sold the series to Netflix. Here is his final take on the series and what he learned from it.
“If it was easy, everyone would do it.”
After seven years and four seasons, my indie series “EastSiders” is coming to an end. It’s been a wild ride from YouTube to Netflix, where the show is now available worldwide, subtitled in more than 30 languages.

Exclusive: The fourth and final season of Kit Williamson’s Emmy-nominated Lgbtq series Eastsiders will be available on Netflix on December 1.
Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $140,000 from fans, Eastsiders, a co-production with Wolfe Video, will be back with a fourth season that picks up with the Silver Lake gang one year later. Executive produced by Williamson and his husband John Halbach, who also star, the six-episode Season 4 tackles heavy, adult-world questions like how do two human beings make love last? What does commitment really look like in a long-term relationship? And what unique challenges does a “gay marriage” present?
Cal (Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis) are back home from Season 3’s cross-country road trip, still a couple but wondering if they are really just best friends with benefits. Douglas (Willam Belli) and Quincy (Stephen Guarino) are engaged to be married, but with very different ideas about what a gay wedding should be.
