It’s hard to imagine nowadays, but humans weren’t always at the top of the food chain. And with our ancestors being preyed upon by larger mammals and even our fellow humanoids, it stands to reason that we’d develop a generalized fear of the dark. That’s why it makes sense that cold places where the sun doesn’t routinely rise are naturally suited for spooky stories.
This is precisely what showrunner Issa López had in mind when she came up with HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, a brand-new murder mystery that returns the anthology show to its horrific roots. And with new episodes dropping weekly, we’ve decided to help viewers get an additional fix of frigid frights by recommending six arctic thrillers to watch after Td: Night Country.
As usual, don’t forget to comment below with your own arctic favorites if you think we missed a particularly spooky one.

I don’t know of many Christmas horror adaptations. Sure, I could probably look at the history of Krampus and piece something together but other than that I’m hard pressed so let me know in the comments what I could cover next holiday season. Winter in general has all sorts of movies and stories that they are based off of. The very first episode of this show was all about The Thing and its source material Who Goes There and now in the middle of winter, at least in Colorado, I think it’s time to look at one of the better vampire properties of the 2000s and a great limited series comic. 30 Days of Night was originally pitched as a movie but when it was turned down, the comic came out and put the author’s name on the map. As is the nature of Hollywood, it...

Image Comics says it no longer plans on publishing a comic from Warren Ellis, the writer who 11 months ago was accused of using his success to coerce women into romantic and sexual relationships.
The project, a continuation of his mid-2000s series Fell with artist Ben Templesmith, was revealed earlier this week to be returning. The news sparked a backlash within the industry, and now, after initially saying it would carry on with the comic, Image is pulling back.
“This week’s Fell announcement was neither planned, nor vetted, and was in fact, premature,” the statement from Image reads. “While finishing Warren ...

Swamp Thing Winter Special #1: My interview with Tom King had to be canceled, but his signing at Third Eye Comics last Saturday was incredible. Comic Book Reviews: DC Comics Round Up Week 08-24-2016
Recently I put up an article here on Lrm about getting into Batman for new or casual readers (and to an extent, some of the more regular comic book readers out there). I broke it down to three good jumping on points, of which Tom King’s "Batman: Rebirth #1" was used. Now with some of the "Rebirth" books getting near issue six, I can say almost (Almost, not All!) all of the official "Rebirth" books have been an excellent introduction to the series for new readers. On that front, DC has been hugely successful (and the sales numbers are showing it). While continuity is still a bit funky, and events within titles don’t really seem to match up in a macro sense, each individual series has been a blast to read. While I am still reading Marvel books,...

Fright Rags has added four new beautifully dark T-Shirts to their collection that were inspired by covers of the Idw Publishing horror comic series, 30 Days of Night. Also in this morning's round-up: release details for Mickey Keating's Pod and the horror-thriller Blood Punch.
30 Days of Night T-Shirts: In the three-issue comic series 30 Days of Night written by Steve Niles with artwork by Ben Templesmith, vampires roam the frozen landscape of Barrow, Alaska. The town lies 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, resulting in the sun not rising there (during the Winter Solstice) for 30 days. The vampires take this annual celestial event as an opportunity to wreak havoc on the townspeople.
In 2012, the series returned with 30 Days of Night Volume 1 by series creator Steve Niles and illustrated by Sam Kieth. Volume 2 in the series was released in August of that same year with artwork by Christopher Mitten and Davide Furno.

As the end of the 75th Anniversary of Batman rolls around, DC Comics gives us a week full of gifts concentrated on the Dark Knight and his beloved family of crime fighters. It’s been a hard year for our Caped Crusader as he’s dealt with the death of his son and the change from Dick Grayson being a super hero to embracing the role of government agent. We also get some action from femme fatales Helena Bertinelli and Catwoman as they cross paths with dangerous enemies in their different and complex walks of life.
Writer Dan Abnett takes us into the heat of battle as the Eternity War gears up. He-Man and his pals go up against dark forces that plan to rule the universe from the captured Castle Grayskull. Can the combined strengths of She-Ra, Teela, and He-Man reclaim Eternia in the name of all that’s good?...

Gotham City just can’t seem to catch a break. As if there isn’t enough trouble with human criminals like the Joker, Penguin, and Riddler, the supernatural things that live under your bed and go bump in the night seem to be drawn to the depressingly dark metropolitan as well. So much so that Commissioner James Gordon has set up a special unit to investigate all the reports of otherworldly phenomena.
Gotham By Midnight #1 introduces us to an extraordinary team made up of Lieutenant Weaver, Forensics Doctor Szandor Tarr, Religious Consultant Sister Justine, Detective Lisa Drake, and Detective Jim Corrigan which is referred to by the rest of the police department as the “Night Shift.” As the ghostly Spectre, Corrigan has a special interest in the cases the group looks into. Each member of the group does their part to solve the mysterious wrongdoings which unfold during the Witching Hour.

Black Mask Studios is adapting Godkiller into an animated trilogy.
The publisher is financing the big screen adaptation of the series, by Matt Pizzolo, Anna Muckcracker Wieszczyk and Ben Templesmith, reports Deadline.
The comic follows the journey of an orphaned adolescent and escaped slave across a blasted wasteland.
Black Mask will finance and produce the project, which expands the experimental 2010 film Godkiller: Walk Among Us, which starred Lance Henriksen, AFI's Davey Havok, Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley and Lydia Lunch.
To follow Walk Among Us, Pizzolo will write and direct Godkiller: Tomorrow's Ashes in 2016 and Godkiller: The Trouble You Took From Her Eyes in 2017.
He is one of the founders of Black Mask alongside Steve Niles and Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz.
Godkiller launched as a self-published, underground title in 2008 and was subsequently picked up by Black Mask.

The Godkiller films are being directed and scripted by Matt Pizzolo, who co-created the comic with Anna Muckcracker Wieszczyk and Ben Templesmith. The Massive #27
Written by Brian Wood
Art by Garry Brown
Colors by Jordie Bellaire
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Is Brian Wood’s The Massive really approaching the 30th issue milestone… already? It didn’t seem long ago when Kristian Donaldson’s beautiful art was teasing the history of characters like Mag and Mary. The Massive looked to be the spiritual successor to Dmz back in early 2012. Timely, political, character driven, personal, and smart. This issue may just end up being the series’ climax of sorts, serving up the biggest revelation of the series and one that has been teased since the title’s announcement. As the moment plays out, I realize this is not the spiritual successor to Dmz… (Stuart Smalley voice) and that’s okay.
[*** Spoilers for The Massive #27 and the series as a whole to follow.***]
Issue 27 does not have a title, other than the third part (of six) of the “Ragnarok” arc, set to wrap up with #30. After an incredibly interesting,...

With only 3 days left on kickstarter, Mike Pecci has released a brand new teaser trailer for his upcoming horror film 12 Kilometers.
Director Mike Pecci (Grindhouse Shorts / The Dead Can’t Be Distracted) knows these corridors all too well. While ice skating for the first time earlier this year, Pecci slipped and cracked his skull open, suffering a hematoma and multiple concussions. Five days in intensive care, over two months of recovery time and a flood of painkillers later, a storyline began to emerge in the form of Pecci’s original horror film, “12 Kilometers.”
The strange and creepy footage give us an up-close look at the in-camera creature effects for the film. Beautifully shot blood vessels, and disturbing black oils mixing to create something terrifying! Watch the new trailer then head over to: http://kck.st/1uONYYg You will find all sorts of great videos and incentives including concept art from comic book artist Ben Templesmith.

Pulp Comics!! God, I can’t believe I’m turning into that guy. The sad thing is that I am the proud owner of a trenchcoat that looks exactly like it came out of a detective novel. No, not a creepy Hot Topic black leather duster, I’m talking the real thing, as vintage as you can get without dropping a few grand. Definitely holding on to it in case trenchcoats come back in style. Or the apocalypse happens. Whichever comes first.
Also, I just noticed that, for the second time, I’m reviewing all #3 issues. I think it’s a good omen.

Squidder #2
Written and Illustrated by Ben Templesmith
Published by Idw
It would be a bit of an understatement to say that this series has a developed mythos. It’s dense, for lack of a better word. This isn’t a problem, although it does mean that we spend a great deal of time trying to understand the world being presented to us. This is an interesting comic. It has byzantine moments of complexity and the art style is not inviting to the reader, yet it still draws you in.
The Squidder carries out his mission to find the squid priestess he was hired to find. This isn’t particularly difficult, and he quickly butchers the men who took her. He makes his disdain for her clear, viewing her as nothing more than a propagandist for the squids. She reveals that she’s significantly more complicated, however, making clear that she’s broken away from them.

So where have I been for nearly a month?
I was in Boulder, Colorado, USA. And before you make the inevitable joke, No. I was there for a wedding. And every moment Not dedicated to that wedding was spent either hiking in the mountains or drinking at a brewery. It was glorious.
Boulder, though, is not my town. That place, frankly, can’t handle me. A relative and I were strolling down Boulder’s “Main Street,” when I casually dropped the F-bomb. Admittedly, I didn’t pull my punch and I’m fully aware of how my voice broadcasts, often unintentionally. But the simultaneous attention of no less than 4 individuals who all seemed at least startled by my expletive definitely did not justify the rather mild delivery of said swear word. I double-checked; there were no children nearby upon whose behalf these people could be appalled for by my obscenity.

In the future, man is being terrorized by sentient squid monsters demanding human sacrifices. Even writing that, I would normally laugh at the ridiculousness of that statement. Yet something about this comic book doesn’t make me want to laugh derisively at it. Indeed, the more I read, the more I found myself becoming engrossed in the story and the general concept.
Humanity has lost a war against a race of sentient, nearly godlike Squids, and society has largely collapsed in the face of their power. Before humanity fell, super-soldiers were created to fight them, and one of the last remaining soldiers is a mercenary in this fallen world. He lost his family to Squids and their human priest-collaborators and is pretty willing to do jobs for just about anybody. A group of thugs tries to take him to meet their boss,...

This July, Idw Publishing and 44Flood come together again to release an all-new four-issue series, The Squidder, from famed comic artist Ben Templesmith; and we have all the info you need here, including a look at the cover art.
From the Press Release:
Ben Templesmith returns to Idw as a triple threat with a series in which he writes and provides story, art, and lettering as well as the primary covers. The Squidder mixes action, horror, science fiction, and fantasy elements with a touch of “Squidly” destruction.
Templesmith first gained renown as the artist responsible for the singular style of 30 Days of Night, which he co-created with noted horror master Steve Niles, and that went on to well documented success as a major motion picture. I have no idea what is happening to me. Am I getting soft? I didn’t execute a Single. Comic. This week. That’s right, I was so wowed by all of these debut issues, they are All getting a pardon until their next volume. Usually, I read at least One #1 issue that I can’t stand. Maybe it’s because I picked up two pulp comics, which I’ll admit to being a sucker for. But I was actually pretty convinced I’d dislike the overpriced The Last Broadcast before I even picked it up, and in fact, my first read-through, I wanted to execute it. But upon further dissemination, I started to appreciate the art more and…
