A Nurse Jackie sequel series, originally set at Showtime, is now in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Edie Falco set to star, Deadline has confirmed.
As we previously reported in 2023, the potential sequel series from Lionsgate Television, producer of the original series, was in development at Showtime. Showtime‘s linear network, which launched more than four decades ago during the early days of cable, was officially rebranded and relaunched in a package with Paramount+ in January.
Per the logline: “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.”

Exclusive Updated: Showtime is looking to bring back two of its signature comedy series, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. Both hail from Lionsgate Television and former Showtime chief Robert Greenblatt who has a deal at the indie studio.
Reps for Showtime and Lionsgate would not comment but I hear the followups, now in early stages of development, have the original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker, attached to star and executive produce. Sources stress that the projects are still coming together and deals are being negotiated.
The Weeds revival would be written and executive produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the popular Danish series Rita, and would feature Nancy (Parker) in Copenhagen, I hear.
Meanwhile, I hear the Nurse Jackie sequel would be written/executive produced by Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive who were writers-producers on the original series. The concept is still being finalized.

Miramax TV is developing and producing a new original series entitled “Messy,” created by actress Carly Chaikin, Variety has learned exclusively. Chaikin is known best for playing the role of Darlene in USA Network’s “Mr. Robot” and co-starring as Dalia Royce in ABC’s “Suburgatory.” Chaikin not only wrote “Messy,” but will also star in the dark comedy about a mother-daughter duo that organizes houses for a living (the irony is that both of their lives are total messes). Chaikin will play the daughter. In addition, Liz Brizius, the Emmy-nominated co-creator and co-showrunner of Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” will serve as showrunner as part of the overall deal she inked with Miramax TV last summer. Even in the era of Walter White, Don Draper and the gang from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," broadcast network executives are still obsessed with the idea of likable and admirable heroes, especially when it comes to comedy. You'll occasionally find your questionable morality in network dramas like "Scandal" and "The Good Wife," but sitcom protagonists tend to have their rough edges sanded off as quickly and artlessly as possible. One new network comedy debuting this week illustrates why the suits tend to freak out about likability, while another demonstrates the pitfalls of trying to tone down bad behavior. ABC's "Selfie" (Tuesday at 8 p.m.) features a heroine so obnoxious that one wishes the network had stepped in to soften her up, while NBC's "Bad Judge" (Thursday at 9 p.m.) stripped away many of its heroine's most questionable traits from the original pilot and didn't bother replacing them with anything worth watching for.

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). "Bad Judge"! Quick Response: NBC's "Bad Judge" is the last Take Me To The Pilots entry for a show premiering this fall on a major network. I've saved it until the end for two good reasons: 1) As the title accurately teases, it's bad. 2) I'm reasonably sure that the pilot sent to critics in May isn't going to be the pilot that's going to air on NBC this fall. I think NBC liked the idea of doing a show with Kate Walsh and they liked the idea of ordering two pilots produced by Will Ferrell and they liked that the title is an easy sell. So Liz Brixius has been brought in to run the show and two major roles have been recast and another role is being pushed from the...

"Nurse Jackie" finished off a wildly uneven Season 5 with an inevitable ending: Jackie fell off the wagon and started using again, at the exact time her friends and family were celebrating her year of sobriety.
We knew this was coming ever since last season, when Jackie (Edie Falco) bolted out of rehab before finishing the program. There's also the fact that this show is designed to track the trials and tribulations of an addict -- something that's a lot harder to do with a sober lead. What's disappointing is that Season 5 never did much to raise the stakes for that moment.
Maybe Jackie's perfunctory relapse will help straighten out the show, which struggled to find its way after the unprecedented highs of Season 4. A big shift behind-the-scenes -- creators and former showrunners Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem departed their roles and "Dexter" producer Clyde Phillips stepped in -- led to...

Jackie Peyton, the caustic but caring ER nurse and recovering addict played by Edie Falco in "Nurse Jackie," will be back for a sixth season. Showtime's renewal of the half-hour dramedy came shortly after the network's announcement that "The Borgias" would be ending. Co-produced by Showtime and Lionsgate, "Nurse Jackie" is built around a terrific performance from Falco, who won an Emmy for the role in 2010. The show's had some struggles evolving over its run, but in recent seasons has introduced a few interesting, serious changes to Jackie's home and work life that have forced the character to grow. The series is currently nearing the end of its fifth year, with its season finale slated for Sunday, June 16. Showtime's medical comedy-drama "Nurse Jackie" returned last night to start off its fifth season, making it officially something of a veteran series on the network. The show, created by Evan Dunsky, Liz Brixius and Linda Wallem, continues to follow Edie Falco (who has won an Emmy for her work in the show) as Jackie Peyton, a (now recovering) painkiller-addicted emergency room nurse at a New York hospital. You can check out the full season premiere, "Happy Fucking Birthday," below for one month courtesy of Showtime. Penned by new showrunner Clyde Phillips and directed by Randall Einhorn ("Late Bloomer", the episode takes place on the day before Jackie's birthday. The YouTube link will expire on May 15th -- the new season airs Sundays at 9pm on Showtime.

(Warning: The following "Nurse Jackie" Season 5 review contains minor plot spoilers and a few general storyline details not revealed in the season premiere. We're not trying to give anything away, but proceed with caution if you're spoiler sensitive.)
After a season in which Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" redefined itself as essential viewing, anything less is going to feel like a disappointment. And while recovering addict Jackie still hasn't relapsed at the beginning of Season 5, her series is taking several steps backwards.
Season 4 started with a bang: Jackie's marriage was in pieces, she voluntarily entered rehab, her best friend Dr. O'Hara (Eve Best) was pregnant and her colleagues were thrown for a loop by All Saints' aggressive and arrogant new administrator Mike Cruz (Bobby Cannavale). The season took off from there, making brilliant use of every member of its ensemble to tell a terrific arc about personal and professional turmoil and...

For most of her TV career, Edie Falco has benefited from continuity. Tom Fontana was the boss on “Oz” the entire time she was there. David Chase ran “The Sopranos” from first minute to last. And for the first four seasons of Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” Falco reported to writer/producers Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius. But Wallem and Brixius left after the hospital dramedy’s fourth season, and have been replaced by former “Dexter” showrunner Clyde Phillips.(*) With the fifth season set to debut on Sunday night at 9, I talked with Falco about adjusting to a new boss, where Jackie’s head...

After jogging Nurse Jackie out of its storytelling rut — and guiding its fourth season to what many critics called a creative high point and a real turnaround — showrunners Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius made a sudden exit. When the Showtime series premieres its fifth season this Sunday at 9 p.m., things will have shifted under new boss Clyde Phillips, who previously led Dexter. He says both the network and studio had already been thinking of shaking things up, and for the most part, that’s meant a less heavy, less dreary, more overtly comedic approach to continuing the story of a still-sober but struggling former addict. “We wanted it to be a comedy. A dark comedy. It had really become a very heavy drama for a while there,” Phillips said, bringing to mind Edie Falco’s infamously stunned reaction to winning the 2010 Emmy for Lead Comedy Actress (“I’m not funny!

NBC has delayed one of its most promising pilots. The network has postponed Girlfriend in a Coma to June after trouble recasting the lead role of Christina Ricci, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The decision to recast the role out of the traditional pilot-season window was made mutually by NBC, creator Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie) and producers Wolf Films and Universal Television and comes 10 days after Ricci exited the pilot following the table read. Exclusive: The decision was made mutually by NBC and the project’s creator, Liz Brixius, and producers, Wolf Films and Universal TV. It comes 10 days after Christina Ricci, who had been cast as the lead in Girlfriend In A Coma, exited the pilot. After seeing a number of actresses, the pilot’s auspices concluded that the talent pool so late in the pilot season is just not wide enough to find a suitable replacement for the Karen role, which carries the project. Based on Douglas Coupland’s book, Girlfriend In A Coma centers on Karen, a woman who was in a coma for many years and unexpectedly wakes up to find she has a 17-year-old daughter, Evie (Miranda Cosgrove). Daniel Stern and Ann Cusack play Karen’s parents, who have been raising Evie. The Girlfriend In A Coma script was a favorite of NBC executives who remain committed to making...

Christina Ricci has left her NBC comedy pilot "Girlfriend in a Coma," according to Deadline.com.
Ricci was set to star in the NBC series as Karen, a woman who awakens from a coma to find out she has a teenage daughter played by Miranda Cosgrove. Daniel Stern and Anne Cusack are also attached to "Girlfriend in a Coma" as Karen's parents.
Deadline.com reports Ricci left the project after the first table read. Cosgrove tweeted about the table read to her fans:
The "Girlfriend in a Coma" pilot hails from "Nurse Jackie" co-creator Liz Brixius and is based on Douglas Coupland’s novel of the same name.
Ricci previously starred in ABC's "Pan Am," which was canceled after a season. She went on to guest star on CBS's "The Good Wife" for an episode earlier in its current fourth season.

NBC's comedy pilot "Girlfriend in a Coma" is looking for a new star after lead actress Christina Ricci departed the project.
Ricci was set to play a woman in her mid-30s who's been in a coma since high school and wakes up to find she has a teenage daughter (Miranda Cosgrove of "iCarly"). She and the show parted ways after a table read, Deadline reports.
"Nurse Jackie" co-creator Liz Brixius wrote the "Girlfriend in a Coma" script, which is based on Douglas Coupland's novel. The cast also includes Ann Cusack and Daniel Stern as the lead character's parents, who have been raising their granddaughter.

Exclusive: NBC comedy pilot Girlfriend In A Coma will be recasting its lead following the departure of Christina Ricci. I hear Ricci left the project after the table read. She was the first major cast member to board the pilot, which has been a favorite of NBC brass. As part of Ricci’s casting, the pilot was slated to film in New York where she is based. It is unclear whether production will now stay in New York or move to Los Angeles. Written by Liz Brixius based on Douglas Coupland’s book, Girlfriend In A Coma centers on Karen, a woman who was in a coma for many years and unexpectedly wakes up to find she has a 17-year-old daughter, Evie (Miranda Cosgrove). NBC's Girlfriend in a Coma comedy pilot has lost Christina Ricci as the lead Karen, leaving NBC to recast, reports Deadline. Apparently she left after the table read, and since the production was set to take place in New York, where Ricci is based, it's now unknown if this will remain in N.Y., or move to L.A. Liz Brixius writes Girlfriend in Coma, based on the book by Douglas Coupland which tells of Karen who, after being in a coma for several years, unexpectedly comes and sees she has a seventeen-year-old daughter in her life called Evie (played by Miranda Cosgrove). Also in the cast are Ann Cusack and Daniel Stern as Karen's parent, who've been raising the girl.

"iCarly" star Miranda Cosgrove has booked a lead role as Christina Ricci's daughter in NBC's comedy pilot "Girlfriend in a Coma." Yes, 19-year-old Cosgrove will play 33-year-old Ricci's daughter.
It's a comedy.
"Nurse Jackie" writer Liz Brixius adapted the script from a book by Douglas Coupland about a young woman (Ricci) who suddenly awakes after years in a coma and discovers she has a 17-year-old daughter (Cosgrove). The overachieving teen isn't exactly thrilled to welcome a free-spirited and previously Mia mom into her life.
The comedy pilot has a rather unexpected executive producer on board: "Law & Order" veteran Dick Wolf. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Cosgrove's casting.
For anyone else who remembers how adorable Ricci was as little Wednesday Addams in "The Addams Family" movies, don't worry: we feel old too.

iCarly alumna Miranda Cosgrove has been cast as a lead opposite Christina Ricci in NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Girlfriend In A Coma, from Wolf Films and Universal TV. Evie is a small-town, overachieving loner whose world is turned upside down when her mom wakes up, and every hope she ever had of keeping her nose to the grindstone, saving money, and getting grades for an out-of-state college is thrown out the window. Cosgrove, who has Despicable Me 2 coming out July 3, is with Wme and Anonymous Content. It may be only January, but it’s time to think about the next TV season.
As the networks begin to order pilots, it’s just another reminder that some of our favorite programs may not make it another year — new shows have to go somewhere, right?
As a result, during the pilot acquisition process, it’s also necessary to look at what series can get cut. Some already have (goodbye, ABC’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23), whereas others we won’t know the fates of until later this year.
There are always shows that are “on the bubble,” meaning they could either stay or go based on ratings, and somehow NBC’s Parks and Recreation has consistently been one of them. I’ve been worried lately that the beloved comedy won’t make it to six seasons, especially...
