As lovely and lilting as hearing Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” over a crackly record player on a snow-flecked day, Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Okuyama’s second feature “My Sunshine” is a moving coming-of-age drama about kids facing up to the troubles of adulthood.
This gently composed story of an ice-skating coach on the island of Hokkaido, and his two young pupils, has darker dynamics under its sleeve than the emotionally generous time-to-face-the-music-of-growing-up story that’s on its surface. It’s told in furtive glances and silent pacts against a frost-dappled backdrop, the end of winter coming soon, as two adolescents form a bond on the ice rink that complicates the private life of their instructor. Japan would be wise to submit “My Sunshine,” the second feature from “Jesus” director Okuyama, for the Best International Feature Oscar. Both the glass-half-full and the glass-half-empty corners of the audience will resonate with...

Some films prioritize a strident political cause, others set out to terrify or thrill. This touching and simple story from Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Okuyama, premiering in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, is a gentler affair, with modest ambitions that it realizes effectively. Set on a small Japanese island, the film’s slight but sweet narrative follows a quartet of characters — young hockey player Takuya (Keitatsu Koshiyama), proficient skater Sakura (Kiara Nakanishi), figure-skating tutor Arakawa (Sōsuke Ikematsu) and his boyfriend (Ryûya Wakaba) — as they navigate subtly shifting interpersonal dynamics while a cold but beautiful winter waxes and wanes around them.
Every scene is set up with a very deliberate aesthetic sense. A snowy icing-sugar landscape, a baseball field tinged with pale turquoise light, an indoor ice-rink shimmering in a golden haze: Nothing feels haphazard or anything less than picture-perfect. In Japan the very first few snowflakes begin to fall signaling the change of seasons. Another clue is we see young Takuya (Keitatsu Koshiyama) and his baseball-playing buddies taking those final swings at bat and moving on to ice hockey. That is basically how this quiet and lilting charmer of a coming-of-age story is introduced, and it sets the table perfectly for what is to follow.
Only the second narrative feature film for promising 28-year-old filmmaker Hiroshi Okuyama, whose first film 2018’s Jesus like this one also dealt with children, My Sunshine does not come from his own childhood experiences but is a story about figure skating, or in this case ice dancing, with which he has always been fascinated but never had a way in. In Hiroshi Okuyama’s My Sunshine, three souls find solace and poignant moments of self-discovery in figure skating. The film chronicles a season of the sport in a small town on a Japanese island, the kind of place whose melting snow and changing leaves inspire poetic musings. Guided by the beauty of the landscape and the nostalgia of childhood, Okuyama constructs a quiet narrative buoyed by an understated charm.
The film opens with signs of a new season. During a baseball game, Takuya (Keitatsu Koshiyama), a sheepish boy with minor speech troubles, becomes mesmerized by snowflakes fluttering to the ground. While his teammates steal bases, he cranes his neck, angling for a better view of the crystals. Scenes of snow blanketing the town in Hokkaido, the Japanese island where Okuyama (Jesus) filmed My Sunshine, follow. These images — of powdery mountain peaks and quiet streets flanked by snow — possess the haunting...

Wind Breaker's Intense Sakura vs Togame Fight Isn't Like Your Typical Shonen Battle — Here's Why - Main Image
Shonen fights are typically about who throws the strongest punch and has the flashiest finishing move, along with power-ups and transformations. However, in the Sakura vs. Togame fight in Wind Breaker, the author takes it to the next level, creating a unique shonen dispute that fans will talk about for years.
Spoiler Warning: This article includes spoilers for the Wind Breaker manga series, so proceed with caution.
Sakura Faces Togame Jo in Wind Breaker
Following the altercation between Hiragi and Sako, Sakura finally meets Shishitoren's deputy captain, Togame Jo, also known as Shaggy Hair.
It is the second-to-last fight in Bofurin and Shishitoren's one-on-one brawl, with the winner assuming control of the losing group.
So far, Bofurin has won three of its fights, and it would be unfortunate if Sakura broke their winning streak.

Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto is one of the most popular Shonen Series that features a number of iconic female characters, such as Kurenai, Mei Tarumi, Ino Yamanaka, Konan, and many more. However, two characters stand out, particularly in the series, it is none other than Hinata Hyuga and Sakura Haruno.
A young Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuga
While fans of the series immensely love the former character for her looks and attributes and how she treats our protagonist, they hate the latter for the same. The hate for Tsunade Senju’s apprentice is the most extreme of all anime characters. It looks like Kishimoto-san has chosen his favorite female character out of the two, as he prefers the Byakugan princess over a strange reason that the medical ninja can not change.

Masashi Kishimoto has never hesitated in bringing out the best of each character in Naruto. Each and every character has a sense of individuality whether by design or personality. Uniqueness is not something Naruto is short of and that shows from every angle. Even the characters that may not be as popular or often disliked are recognizable because of one or the other unique features.

The relationship between Sasuke and Sakura is one of the most debated topics in Naruto. Fans have always argued whether the two characters were right for each other or not. Nevertheless, Masashi Kishimoto was able to make it work, thanks to a piece of advice that he got from the editor of the series, Kosuke Yahagi.
Sasuke and Sakura
Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship is considered by many to be one of the most toxic relationships in the history of anime because of the way Sasuke treated Sakura. Because of his ambition to find his elder brother, Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke neglected, and even insulted, Sakura’s feelings to a great extent. Ultimately, when the series concluded, the two ended up together.
In 2014, Kishimoto revealed that he had no idea about how to proceed with the three protagonists of his magnum opus, but Yahagi helped him create the perfect scenario for Naruto,...

Masashi Kishimoto took it upon himself to create one of the big three shonen works. Naruto stands out in many ways and not just one. Each and every step he took with the series provided an extra set of fans to join in. No story starts off with a bang and maintains that pace without effort. It takes dedication, understanding, and flexibility to make something stand out in the way Naruto does.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you love delinquent characters in anime. From Yu Yu Hakusho to Tokyo Revengers , there’s something special about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (or one who at least acts like they’re from the wrong side of the tracks) slowly revealing that they’re a complex human being with a heart of gold. And both of the above series are layered from the beginning with questions of morality and themes regarding what it takes to be a good or bad person. In that sense, the spring 2024 release Wind Breaker cuts out the middleman. We don’t have to figure out whether or not we want to love the rough n’ tumble main characters. Why? Because everyone else already does. Related: 10 Anime Delinquents Too Good to be Bad For those that haven’t seen it, please give it a shot.

He began serializing the manga in 1999, and the anime started to air in 2001. Since then, it has become a cult classic, with its popularity increasing each day.
Naruto Uzumaki’s journey is inspiring and has motivated several people. Apart from him, Masashi Kishimoto’s magnum opus has other inspiring characters, too. Out of all the characters, there are two with whom the fans from America can especially empathize. They represent a certain quality that every human has, and needs to overcome through hard work. Fans always like crossovers, which – whether they are official or fan-made – show us a hypothetical scenario in which our favorite characters meet our other favorite characters they would usually not meet. And while in-universe crossovers are not that uncommon, inter-universe crossovers rarely happen officially, but fans are often there to create a great crossover event that other fans can enjoy. One such recent event happened when YouTube user 牙牙的包裹 (Xiaozhangdeaoliao) combined two fights from the most recent season of Jujutsu Kaisen with some scenes from the Naruto series, creating a very believable crossover fight which we are going to show you here.
Of course, this is just a fan-made video, as there is really no chance of an official crossover between Akutami’s and Kishimoto’s series, not because the two authors would be against it, but because their universes are completely different and a crossover wouldn’t really make much sense.

Naturally, fans have started wondering if Akutami also hated Nobara but never mentioned it.

It is not common for Gege Akutami to kill off fan-favorite characters, but his treatment of Nobara left people puzzled. Some fans suggest that Nobara was never...

The Akatsuki is a worldwide known evil faction from the Naruto franchise. Their motive was to capture all the tailed beasts. Capturing a tailed beast is no matter of joke, so they recruited the best rogue shinobi who had unique abilities and were strong enough to fulfill the goal. One of the members of the Akatsuki was Kakuzu.
Kakuzu was the oldest member of the Akatsuki and had faced the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, and managed to escape with his life. But people often disrespect him and call him weak. Even though he faced the Hashirama Senju, he lost against a teenager named Naruto Uzumaki. While many have questioned Kakuzu’s abilities, it does not need to be said that he is indeed one of the strongest shinobi to ever live.
Kakuzu’s Intellect and Battle Prowess Is Second To None Kakuzu

It's not unusual for the movies to come out of manga and anime series to feel a little off. The stories are often non-canon or otherwise abridged adaptations of ongoing story arcs, and the best thing you can hope for as a viewer is that a given movie captures some hint of what you enjoy about the series. While the movies may not hit the heights of the series, they can still deliver excellent character moments and action.
Whether or not the "Naruto" films deliver on that is up for debate. As the manga and anime series focused on the growth and development of its title character, a young ninja in a fantasy world on the path to glory, the movies give him and some of his coterie of allies non-canonical missions on which they can prove their mettle. For a series weighed down with a large number of "filler...

(Welcome to The Movies That Made "Star Wars," a series where we explore the films and television properties that inspired George Lucas' iconic universe. In this edition: The classic jidaigeki film "Three Outlaw Samurai.")
As the first feature film from the legendary Japanese filmmaker Hideo Gosha, "Three Outlaw Samurai," holds a special place in the pantheon of Japanese films. It tells the story of three samurai who battle corruption and balance their honor and obedience to the system that produced them with doing what's actually right — something that feels almost radical in this style of filmmaking. The movie's stars — Tetsurô Tanba, Isamu Nagato, and Mikijirô Hira as the titular samurai — were reprising their roles from a television show with the same name that had started the year before. According to the essay by Bilge Eberi that accompanies the Criterion Collection's excellent Blu-ray transfer of the film, the original show seems lost to time.

In the vast world of anime and manga, characters play a pivotal role in shaping the narrative. While protagonists often take the spotlight, there are characters like Kakashi Hatake from “Naruto” who leave an indelible mark despite not being the central figure. Let’s delve into Kakashi’s personality, development, and significance, unravelling the layers of this enigmatic ninja.
Personality and Enigma:
Kakashi’s persona blends mystery, composure, and sometimes the trademark Naruto-style comedy, often concealed by his ever-present face-covering headband. His tranquil façade belies a mind forged in the fires of experience and hardship. Kakashi’s wry sense of humour and calm demeanour shroud the intricate layers of his character. But beneath that calm exterior lies a vivid tapestry of emotions, fears, and motivations waiting to be explored.
Development and Backstory:

Japan’s most prolific and successful contemporary filmmaker, Hirokazu Kore-Eda, is back in a favorite place, Cannes, for the unveiling of his latest effort, a return to his Japanese storytelling roots and a good one at that. For his seventh film in the main Cannes competition and his ninth overall (counting two that appeared in Un Certain Regard), Monster represents the first movie since his 1995 debut feature Maborosi that the director has not had a screenplay credit on — this film being written by Sakamoto Yuji — but clearly with its humanist family-centered themes is right in this master craftsman’s wheelhouse.
After last year’s lighter Cannes entry Broker, which was his first Korean film, Monster is more in line with his touching 2013 Jury Prize winner Like Father, Like Son and his 2018 Palme d’Or winner Shoplifters, which also earned him a foreign-language Oscar nomination. In fact, he is teaming...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which this week features a moderate six matches (and isn’t a bunch of repeats unlike this week’s Elevation – hence no review of it). Let’s see what went down…
Match #1: Harley Cameron def. Mafiosa
My Thoughts: Qtv’s “Harley Cameron” gets her first singles match on Dark and it was a pretty solid debut. Nothing to set the world alight but both women gave as good as they got and in the end it was everything a Dark debut could be against enhancement talent that are, unfortunately, never booked as aggressively as signed talent.

1974: a great year for many filmmakers. This was the year Francis Ford Coppola released both “The Godfather: Part II” and “The Conversation”. Mel Brooks hit a prolific streak too with “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles”. Over in West Germany, Rainer Werner Fassbinder continued his hot streak by directing Four feature films, including his most beloved work, “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul”. However, it was perhaps Shinichi ‘Sonny' Chiba who had the most iconic and significant year out of that roster, with a career-defining bumper year that contained an impressive amount of diversity for an actor nominally known as a martial arts star. Surrounding himself with the posse from his expert team ‘Japan Action Club' and with the backing of the Toei Company, Ltd., Chiba completed a full trilogy, a two-part crime caper saga, a spin-off to the aforementioned trilogy And a powerful anti-war drama all in one year.

With the fourth entry of the series already gaining massive praise and admiration all around, I guess it can be said without a shred of doubt that as a franchise, “John Wick” has managed to revolutionize an entire genre of action-oriented movies for the modern audience, all the while staying faithful and conveying adulation to the classic action genre. Screenwriter Derek Kolstad’s and director Chad Stahelski’s inventive vision and lead actor Keanu Reeves’ passion led to making the simplistic arc of an urban legend engaging and unique. Through the use of a uniquely choreographed hands-on approach to the fight sequences, wide shots and long takes, appropriate fight settings, evocative visuals, detailed worldbuilding, and a keen sense of self-awareness—the franchise became one of the most influential ones.
Spoilers Ahead
In the recently released fourth part, the visual brilliance is even more perceivable and helps enrich the narrative, thanks...

My Score: 2 out of 5 Match #2: Jake Hager def. Levi Shapiro
My Thoughts: We rarely get Jake Hager in singles matches on TV/YouTube these days, so it was great to see him work even if this was a squash match!
My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #3: Marina Shafir def. Mighty Mayra

Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which features seven matches on the card once again. We’ve got regulars Paul Wight and Matt Menard on commentary as usual. So let’s get into the review!
Match #1: Emi Sakura def. Rachelle Riveter
My Thoughts: Nice to see Emi Sakura Open an episode of Elevation, though as usual she’s squashing her opponent. Well I say this is a squash, but this is the trademark-pending “Aew quasi-squash”, with Sakura giving Rachelle Riveter just enough space to get some offence in and not look totally weak. Which, if I’m honest, is always a trait of Sakura’s matches – she allows her opponent, no matter who it is, to show off their skills. Unlike some other people on the roster!
