Set in the outer boroughs of New York City, Nick Bentgen’s latest documentary #LoveYourz follows a group of teens who have formed a self-love creative collective as they look to pave a way for themselves into the future. What makes the film so compelling is Bentgen’s ability to capture these teens on their own terms. The camera often floats through organic scenarios, catching moments on the fly, whilst maintaining an intimacy that feels immersive. This is also backed by the use of multiple visual mediums, with great high res photography combined with retro VHS-style footage to give the film a fresh aesthetic buoyancy that keeps you engaged. Dn sat down with Bentgen to talk over the creation of #LoveYourz, revealing the serendipitous moment that led to its creation, the decision making behind his multi-camera setup, and the filmmaking rules he followed to tell his story with authenticity.

The official trailer has been released for Zachary Wigon’s dark thriller “Sanctuary,” starring Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott. The film follows a dominatrix named Rebecca (Qualley) and her rich client Hal (Abbott) as disaster unfolds over the course of a single night in a hotel room.
The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and will open in theaters in the U.S. on May 25.
In “Sancutary,” Abbott plays the son of luxe hotel chain owner who is the successor of the hotel and the rest of his father’s billion-dollar enterprise. Rebecca sees the opportunity to cash in on Hal’s soon-to-be fortune.
As Amy Nicholson wrote in Variety‘s review of the film, “What comes next is a showdown between her force and his financial clout, between labor and the lordly class.”
“But who is he under the bluster?” Nicholson continued. “The dweeb...

Netflix’s “The Lost Daughter” and “Passing” went in as the two most nominated films with five apiece, but that didn’t automatically mean they were the front-runners. Categories at these awards are judged by panels of just a handful of industry insiders, often leading to unexpected, under-the-radar winners. A24’s drama – and the distributor itself – enjoyed a huge Saturday afternoon at Film Independent’s 32nd annual Spirit Awards ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica.
Best feature winner Moonlight won six awards and took the plaudits on an afternoon that also sends best director winner Barry Jenkins to Sunday’s Oscars in high spirits and recognised Friday night’s César winner Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Casey Affleck for Manchester By The Sea in the lead acting categories.
Besides best feature and director, Moonlight won screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, cinematography for James Laxton, and editing for Joi McMillon and Nat Sanders.
The film started the ceremony as joint frontrunner with American Honey on six nominations and converted all six, including the previously announced Robert Altman Award. American Honey went away empty-handed.

As the definition of an independent film has shifted with the ever-expanding budget divide in American filmmaking — particularly Hollywood cutting back on its mid-range projects — when it comes time for awards season, it’s often only the highest profile of “indie films” that get recognized. While we do our best to recognize the films that often get unfortunately, a new awards has launched that honors the best of truly independent American cinema, featuring films all under a $1 million budget.

I'm so glad that Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight" is getting lots of love from the Independent Spirit Awards. It is raw, honest, pure! One of my favorite films of the year! I also enjoyed "Jackie" but largely due to Natalie Portman's wonderful performance. Oh, I'm also loving "Manchester by the Sea!" I interviewed the cast at the Toronto International Film Festival, check it out here. Affleck and Hedges received nominations from the film among its many accomplishments. And I love Ruth Negga from "Loving!" She's nominated for Best Female Lead. Check out my interview with the actress where I told her we'll all remember her name by year's end!

Newcomer Robert Eggers earned two nods for The Witch in a great day for A24, which financed and distributes Moonlight, and distributed American Honey, Morris From America, and Swiss Army Man, and has 20th Century Women on the runway for a December launch.
American Honey and Moonlight will vie for the best feature prize alongside Manchester By The Sea, Fox Searchlight’s Jackie and Monument Releasing’s Chronic.

Anna Rose Holmer was browsing through a book on medieval history when she stumbled upon a passage involving seizures. It wasn't just one or two isolated individuals; entire townships were apparently gripped by these convulsive fits. The former Nyu film student suddenly found herself wondering: Do these sort of mass epidemics still happen? "I started looking into it," she says, sitting in a downtown New York coffee shop near her alma mater. "And I found some recent occurrences of hysteric outbreaks — a made-up disease shows up on a soap opera,...

Oscilloscope Laboratories has set a summer 2016 USA release for its portrait of female adolescence, "The Fits," from director Anna Rose Holmer, her feature film debut, based on a script she co-wrote with Saela Davis and Lisa Kjerulff. Told from the perspective of a young tomboy, "The Fits" follows Toni, an 11-year-old assimilating into a tight-knit dance team in Cincinnati’s West End, when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, and her desire for acceptance is twisted. The festival darling, and critically-acclaimed drama (which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year) stars Royalty Hightower, Alexis...

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2015 discoveries”.
Lisa Kjerulff: Dettifoss in Iceland. 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. Olivier Assayas’ Clouds of Sils Maria.
Lavallee: On this project you wore two hats, that of screenwriter and producer. Could you discuss how you guys collaboratively wrote the project.
Kjerulff: During the writing process Anna Rose Holmer, Saela Davis and I would discuss the characters, themes, arcs and the story, decide on what each beat should be, and then Anna would take the time to write out the scenes. We would read through those pages together and tear the script apart. Our story sessions were rather emotional and we each brought our own version of girlhood to the table. As a producer, it was great collaborating on the film from the script phase because by the time we got to production I knew what was important to Anna’s vision and...

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

We might look back to 2015’s 10 film line-up as a true vintage year for the Next section. With the likes of Rick Alverson’s Entertainment, Sebastián Silva’s Nasty Baby, Matt Sobel’s Take Me to the River, Sean Baker’s Tangerine and section winner Josh Mond’s James White, we’d be hard pressed to say that this year’s 10 selected film selection is a better crop, but so far with names such as Tim Sutton and his super secretive third film (Dark Night – see pic above), video helmer we adore in Nicolas Pesce’s debut (The Eyes of My Mother), short film Yearbook fest winner Bernardo Britto’s first (Jacqueline Argentine), big Slamdance home run hitter with The Dirties’ Matt Johnson (Operation Avalanche) and the Venice to Park City bound The Fits from Anna Rose Holmer are all films we eagerly await.
