Driving to develop animated features and series that reach out to more sophisticated global families and 18-34 young adults after the milestone success of the Academy Award-nominated “I Lost My Body,” Marc du Pontavice’s French animation studio Xilam Animation has tapped ‘Dustbin Baby’ and ‘’Hetty Feather’ screenwriter Helen Blakeman to write “Lucy Lost.”
In the run-up to this year’s online Annecy Festival and Mifa market, Du Pontavice also teased further “The Wolf,” the next feature film at Xilam, to be directed by Julien Bisaro, nominated for an Annie for his storyboard artist work on “I Lost My Body,” whose half hour “Shooom’s Odyssey” is one of Annecy’s buzziest titles in its TV Film section.

It has been a few months since HBO concluded “Game of Thrones,” its epic fantasy drama adapted from a series of popular books. Now comes “His Dark Materials,” the pay cabler’s next epic fantasy drama adapted from a series of popular books. ITV will not be commissioning a second series of Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s lavish period drama Beecham House.
The six-part series, produced by Chadha’s Bend It TV, only managed to pull in an audience of 3.3M in a prestige Sunday night slot. It could not compete with other dramas in the same ITV slot, such as Victoria.
Beecham House will air on PBS in March next year. ITV said Chadha is still hoping to keep the drama going beyond series one through a deal with another international broadcaster.
The drama takes place on the cusp of 19th century in Delhi, following the fortunes of the residents of the titular mansion. It was written by Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges, Shahrukh Husain and Victor Levin (Mad Men).

“His Dark Materials,” the fantasy trilogy by Philip Pullman that has captivated readers since its publication in the late 90s, has proven difficult to adapt in the past. If the forthcoming HBO and BBC series doesn’t hit the mark, viewers and critics will once again be sharpening their subtle knives.
The show took over Hall H at Comic-Con on Thursday afternoon, with stars James McAvoy (Lord Asriel), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter) and Dafne Keen (Lyra Belacqua) all present to show off a new trailer.
The trailer teased the war with the evil organization known the magisterium, with Lord Asriel on one side and Mrs. Coulter on the other. Also mentioned was the child abduction plot at the center of the show.
“Sometimes children can just disappear,” Mrs. Coulter says clicking her fingers ominously.

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles we freeze frame the films at random places with the scroll bar and whatever comes up first, that's what we share!
Remember when Netflix used to get recent movies and classics? Now they seem to be exclusively in the business of streaming things that are between 5-20 years old only... with the obvious exception of their original programming, cheap foreign tv series, and straight to streaming indie stuff that wasn't cut out for theatrical.
Lyra!
The Golden Compass (2007)
Have you ever read this book? It's fantastic and bold. The movie is sadly a compromised rendition but it's still a bit tragic that they didn't finish filming the trilogy. Nicole Kidman was a sensaysh "Mrs Coulter" at least. Whatever happened to Dakota Blue Richards? Remember what a surprise it was when this one beat the first Transformers movie to the Visual FX Oscar?...

Skins debuted on E4 10 years ago. We revisit a bold and unique adolescent drama that kick-started countless careers...
It’s been a decade since Skins, E4’s controversial teen drama, premiered. At the time, it was a source of anxiety for parents about what teenagers were getting up to when they weren’t looking, but for television executives it was pure gold. It achieved that rare feat - it got young people to watch and talk about it - and, after seven years of drinking, drugs and general debauchery, it bowed out in 2013.

This review contains spoilers.
3.4 Coda
The final episode of Endeavour’s third series opens with a funeral. It’s far from unexpected, given that we’ve been noting disturbing hints of impending tragedy ever since we first learnt of Thursday’s failing health. However, the cortege belongs to someone else entirely: local villain Harry Rose, whose mourners are under the surveillance of none other than Thursday and Strange. The scene neatly encapsulates two of the major characteristics of the show in general, and this series in particular. Its melancholy points to sad events yet to come, while highlighting writer Russell Lewis’ taste for allusions to scenes and characters familiar to fans of Inspector Morse. The gangland funeral in Kensal Green cemetery is a direct reference to a scene in the 1991 episode, Promised Land, and the...

Endeavour delivers its most unusual case yet, in an emotionally satisfying episode that's rewarding for long-time Morse viewers...
This review contains spoilers.
3.3 Prey
When Ingrid Hjort (Eleanor Williams) goes missing after an evening out, the police can find no trace of the Danish au pair. Her employer, widowed scientist Dr Hector Lorenz (Milo Twomey) claims to know nothing about her disappearance, while her fellow students at the night school she attended are similarly clueless. Thursday’s convinced that the presumed murder is linked to the vicious attack in 1963 that left another young woman in a coma, but in the absence of Ingrid’s body, nothing can be proved.
The investigation soon takes a turn for the macabre when a man’s severed arm is retrieved from the river. The victim, Ricky Parker (David Burnett) was having fun on the riverbank at night with friends when he disappeared without a trace.

The BBC has commissioned a new drama series based on Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy trilogy of novels, His Dark Materials.
Polly Hill, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning, has announced: "It is an honour to be bringing Philip Pullman's extraordinary novels to BBC One. His Dark Materials is a stunning trilogy, and a drama event for young and old - a real family treat that shows our commitment to original and ambitious storytelling."
Northern Lights introduces Lyra, an orphan, who lives in a parallel universe in which science, theology and magic are entwined. Lyra's search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and turns into a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. Time to get excited: BBC One is to adapt Philip Pullman's epic fantasy trilogy of novels His Dark Materials into a new series.
The ambitious project will be produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema, and will be filmed in Wales. Broadcast dates have yet to be announced.
His Dark Materials consists of Northern Lights (1995, The Golden Compass in America), The Subtle Knife (1997) and The Amber Spyglass (2000).
The series follows two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they travel through various parallel universes and meet a host of fantastical creatures including witches and armoured polar bears. It has drawn criticism for its negative portrayal of Christianity and other religions.
Pullman said: "It's been a constant source of pleasure to me to see this story adapted to different forms and presented in different media. It's been a radio play, a stage play, a film, an audiobook, a graphic...

Here's one of those 'This'll make you feel old' factoids - it's two years since the last ever episode of Skins aired.
E4's groundbreaking hormone-fest wrapped up on August 5, 2013 - with an older Cook (Jack O'Connell) heading off into an uncertain future at the close of 'Rise (Part Two)'.
Cook was but one of 27 major characters featured on Skins across three 'Generations' - in a total of 61 episodes, split into seven series. But where are the teen tearaways of Roundview College now?
Generation One
1. Nicholas Hoult
Hoult played Tony Stonem - the pre-eminent bad boy of Skins - across its first two series. Later badly hurt in a traffic accident and forced to rely on others, Tony had mellowed by his final episodes.
Now aged 25, Hoult has become a bona-fide Hollywood star with roles in this year's Mad Max: Fury Road and the much-anticipated book adaptations Dark Places and Kill Your Friends.

Dakota Blue Richards has joined the cast of ITV's Endeavour as a regular character.
The former Skins and Golden Compass star will play Wpc Shirley Trewlove in the Inspector Morse prequel series opposite Shaun Evans as the title character.
Trewlove is described as a "thorough, determined and forthright" officer, who becomes a valuable member of the force and attracts the admiration of Endeavour.
Creator Russell Lewis said of the character: "Bright, capable and brave, Wpc Shirley Trewlove is a very welcome addition to the ranks of Oxford's Finest. While very much a young woman of the 1960s, Trewlove also evokes a very particular kind of timeless British heroine.
"The sort of clear-eyed, resourceful young woman one wouldn't be surprised to find behind the wheel of the ambulance in Ice Cold in Alex or keeping Robert Donat company across the moors in The 39 Steps. In Dakota we have found our perfect Trewlove.

Nominated for Best UK Feature at the Raindance Film Festival, The Quiet Hour is a gritty post-apocalyptic thriller with a human story at its core. I love the sprinkling of sci-fi here and how the FX are integrated into the moody British landscape.
The Quiet Hour is a UK science-fiction thriller written and directed by French director Stephanie Joalland and produced by Sean McConville. It stars Dakota Blue Richards (The Golden Compass), Karl Davies and Jack McMullen.
Synopsis:

Director/writer: Stéphanie Joalland. Cast: Dakota Blue Richards, Karl Davies, Jack McMullen and Brigitte Millar. The Quiet Hour is a science fiction drama. From Stéphanie Joalland, the film takes place during an alien invasion. Characters can only emerge from their hideaways for two hours a day and the local cannibals take advantage of these 120 minutes. Meanwhile, a desperate family struggles to survive, in these dire circumstances. Strangely, there are a number of suicidal characters, in this outing; they crack under the many pressures. And, the focus of the film is more on interaction and dialogue, versus action or story elements. The film is slowly paced through early acts, but the film is well produced, overall. Most science fiction fans will enjoy this indie film outing. Sarah (Dakota Blue Richards) is the protagonist of the film. The opening scene involves Sarah, burying her father. He has fallen victim to an alien attack.

A new trailer has been released for the post-apocalyptic thriller The Quiet Hour. This film, which was shot in the United Kingdom, involves an alien invasion and the few human survivors that remain. These survivors must defend themselves against bandits and from the aliens above. To show at the Kansas City Film Festival, this title stars: Dakota Blue Richards (The Golden Compass), Karl Davies and Jack McMullen. The film's latest trailer is hosted here. The film's story focuses on Sarah (Richards). She tries to defend her family farm, from marauders. She also must take care of her blind brother. Together, they face challenging odds as the sky lights up with extraterrestrial forces, bent on stealing the Earth's resources. Having risen to prominence as the child star of The Golden Compass, young British actress Dakota Blue Richards has made a series of commendable acting choices ever since, epitomised greatly in her appearance in John Jencks’ poignant and unique drama, The Fold.
We had the pleasure of speaking to Richards about her role in the film, and what attracted her to the project. She speaks about the rarity in finding projects with such strong female leads, working alongside Catherine McCormack, and explains how she’s managed to stay so grounded – and clear of the limelight, avoiding the potential issues that come with starting out in the industry at such a young age.
The Fold offers such a fascinating look into grief, and I was wondering what it was about this film that drew you in to the project?

The theme of grief is one frequently explored in cinema, though commonly with somewhat cliched, banal repercussions, as a subject we’ve often seen dealt with a detrimental indelicacy. However in John Jencks’ debut feature The Fold, we scrutinise over the notion with intrigue, acutely studying how people can react to such anguish, in what proves to be a contemplative, thought-provoking drama that is bound to stick with you.

Drama in aid of a worthy cause is not always more a pleasure than a duty, and Richard Curtis's feature-length Mary and Martha – an early curtain-raiser for Red Nose Day – was no exception. If its aim was to draw attention to the thousands of African children who die needlessly each year from malaria, all I can say is, it felt like it. I hope that doesn't sound too uncharitable. But I would have been as happy with a decent documentary as with this glossy weepie about two mums – one American, one English – having the bad luck to have a beloved son bitten to death by a mosquito in Mozambique and then...

Fans of recent BBC drama The Secret Of Crickley Hall might like to keep an eye out in the schedules for Lightfields, ITV's follow-up to 2011's Marchlands.
Due to air this spring, Lightfields tells its story using the same multi-period structure as its ghostly predecessor, with episodes unfolding the tale of a WWII tragedy, the haunting repercussions of which are felt by characters in 1976, and again in the present day.
Written by Simon Tyrell (Survivors, The Body Farm) and directed by Damon Thomas (Prisoners' Wives, Dirk Gently, Sirens), Lightfields star the likes of Skins' Dakota Blue Richards, Misfits' Karla Crome, The Bill's Danny Webb, and half of this generation's answer to the Gold Blend couple: BT ad man, Kris Marshall.
