“It’s been really interesting to talk about the film in this personal way, because it really was never meant to be so personal,” Elemental director Peter Sohn said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees panel Saturday.
“The seeds sort of started,” the Disney/Pixar vet added of his own Korean family story that birthed the Oscar-nominated toon. “And it rippled through the crew, and a lot of our crew members started bringing their own personal lives to it as well.”
With a love story of sorts between fire element Amber and water element Wade, “empathy among cultures” and a dollop or two of the immigrant experience and interracial relationships, the seven-year effort to bring Elemental to the big screen now sees the half-billion-grossing pic up for Best Animated Feature. The lead actress for Disney Pixar’s Elemental shared an update on her involvement in its potential sequel, Elemental 2.
Leah Lewis voiced Ember alongside Mamoudou Athie’s Wade. While the two started on rocky footing, they eventually turned out to be a pretty sweet couple, getting a happy ending by the time the credits rolled.
As for what’s next, Elemental writers John Hoberg and Kat Likkel confirmed last year to The Direct that they had a scrapped idea to introduce Ember and Wade’s child: "a steam baby."

When CBS announced its Matlock reboot in February of 2023, the casting news generated almost as much excitement as the revelation that one of TV's most beloved lawyers would be returning to the small screen.
One year later, Kathy Bates is still on board as the titular attorney, and Jason Ritter will portray her colleague Julian -- but a well-known newcomer will be taking over the role of Ritter's dad.
The network announced today that Beau Bridges will be joining the show as a powerful lawyer with the apt name of Senior.
According to a press release, Senior is "the managing partner of New York’s most prestigious law firm with an indomitable presence that immediately alters the temperature of any room.
"The man’s influence reaches far and wide, and although he loves his son, Julian (Jason Ritter), he might respect his daughter-in-law, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), more," the announcement continues.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Elemental, the Pixar pic directed by Peter Sohn.
Launching with a world premiere as the closing-night film at May’s Cannes Film Festival, Elemental was penned by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hseuh, based on a story by the writers and Sohn about a fantastical place called Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together.
The plot follows the quick-witted and fiery Ember (Leah Lewis), a new arrival to the city whose friendship with go-with-the-flow Wade (Mamoudou Athie) challenges not only her beliefs about the world they live in, but the person she wants to be.
The idea germinated from Sohn’s own experiences; like Ember, he was a second-generation immigrant whose parents moved from Korea to New York City. That starting point helped to form the film’s themes of fitting in to a new place,...

When the June 16-18 weekend box office numbers started to roll in, the results for “Elemental” were disappointing. Based on on its opening weekend performance, early analysis was Pixar’s reign was waning.
“It was challenging in the beginning,” admitted “Elemental” director Peter Sohn when he was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “As time went on I started trying to figure out, ‘Why is this film not connecting?’”
In a world where the opening box office number defines how big of a hit a movie would ultimately be, “Elemental” numbers held surprisingly strong in weeks two and three of release, and by the end of the summer it would categorized a hit rather than a flop. By the end of 2023, a year that was unprecedentedly rough for big-budget films, “Elemental” would be the only film to cost over $200 million that would be profitable ($498 million worldwide).

"Mess with a tiger, you get the claws!" Paramount Animation has revealed the first look teaser trailer for an animated action movie titled The Tiger's Apprentice, adapted from the same book series. The animated project has been in development for years, and after finally starting production in 2020, the studio decided to cancel the theatrical release and instead send it directly to streaming on Paramount+. Which is a shame because this looks worthy of being seen in theater! Tom Lee, a Chinese-American boy, after the death of his grandmother, discovers he is part of a lineage of magical protectors known as the Guardians. With guidance from a mythical tiger named Hu, Tom trains up to take on Loo, a force that is as powerful as a Guardian but with evil intentions to use magic to destroy humanity. Every few years, the Academy tweaks the rules for its animated feature category, with the net result that the nominees tend to skew ever more mainstream. That makes it tough for most of this year’s hopefuls: A record-setting number of animated features submitted. Those who pick the noms are required to watch roughly a third before ranking their top five, which can include additional titles they might have seen on their own. Blockbusters naturally benefit, though “Flee” and “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” earned nominations in 2022 and 2023, respectively, suggesting that artful indies still stand a chance.

For Pixar’s Elemental, composer Thomas Newman was given the challenge of scoring for ‘elemental’ cultures that don’t exist in the real world, while instilling a sense of familiarity for the viewer. He says the real difficulty was to “point towards different cultures and never land on one.”
Directed by Pete Sohn, the story follows Ember (Leah Lewis), a fire resident working in her parents market, whose fiery temper leads her to a chance meeting with Wade (Mamoudou Athie), a sappy water resident working as a city inspector. While fire and water do not mix well, Ember and Wade find themselves growing closer and closer. Rather than focus on the clash between elements for the score, Newman says the most important thing to remember is that it’s a love story.

Decal Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for a girls trip raucous comedy called Tripped Up, from producer / filmmaker Shruti Ganguly. This is getting a small theatrical and then VOD release at the end of October. It's a comedy about friends bonding while on a trip to a food fest. Aspiring chef Lizzy sets off with her three best friends in tow to compete in the prestigious Saucy Food Festival. What begins as a calculated career move quickly turns into a madcap misadventure full of food, fun and female bonding, where the girls learn that "struggle" can be the secret ingredient. Which is literally exactly what one of the characters says to them. This stars Leah Lewis, Ashley Moore, Ariel Winter, Sasha Fox, and Vanessa Williams. Looks fun, but barely, as the rest of it looks really bad.

The slow-burn life of Elemental continues. The film landed the top streaming debut for a movie on Disney+ so far this year, the streaming service announced Monday. That follows Elemental‘s box office journey, which began inauspiciously with a record-worst opening for a Pixar movie, only for the film to have strong legs and ultimately earn $484 million globally.
According to Disney, Elemental had 26.4 million views — or, to put it another way, viewing time equivalent to that many complete showings of the movie — worldwide in its first five days of streaming. Like its competitor Netflix, Disney+ divides total viewing time by a title’s run time. For comparison’s sake, Disney touted last week that the live-action The Little Mermaid landed on the service with 16 million views in its first five days. The recent episode-one debut of the Star Wars series Ahsoka brought in 14 million over five days. The company did...

The Disney and Pixar film “Elemental” had a strong start on Disney+, with the film pulling in 26.4 million views in its first five days of streaming availability.
Per Disney, that makes “Elemental” the most-watched movie premiere of the year on the service and among the top 10 movie premieres they have ever had. For context, Disney defines a view as total stream time divided by runtime, just like Netflix recently started doing. The film became available on Disney+ on Sept. 13. Disney also says “Elemental” has become the most viewed animated movie premiere since Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” was released in March 2022, as well as the most-viewed Disney+ movie premiere of all time in Latin America, just ahead of “Turning Red.”
By comparison, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” debuted with 1.625 billion minutes viewed in its first five days of availability on Disney+, which translates to approximately 10.8 million views.

Despite a disappointing launch at the box office (it was among Pixar's lowest starts with just $29 million in the US), Elemental has becoming something of the little engine that could, enjoying a healthy long life in cinemas and racking up $480 million worldwide. Now the movie is headed to Disney+.
Elemental, set in Element City, where Fire-, Water-, Earth- and Air-residents live together, introduces fire element Ember (Leah Lewis), whose friendship with a fun and sappy water guy named Wade (voice of Mamoudou Athie) challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.

There appear to be some misconceptions about the box office returns for Disney and Pixar‘s Elemental. The emotional animated feature is entering its seventh week in theaters, and according to Disney, it’s a significant success for the studio. The numbers don’t lie, and Elemental is burning brightly with $425.2M in worldwide receipts. Elemental might have started slowly with a $29.5M domestic debut, but it’s picked up steam in the weeks since.
If you’re asking yourself how the film could endure after a disappointing start, look no further than its 93% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and “A” grade on CinemaScore. Metrics matter to general audiences, and these sites could have boosted people’s confidence in shelling out dollars for tickets to the show. There’s something to be said for positive word of mouth too. Elemental reviewed well with most critics, including JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray,...

Sunday Update: Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One lit the fuse this weekend with a $235M global start. Of that, $155M is from 70 international box office markets which rep 93% of the offshore footprint (Japan is notably still to come).
Excluding China, where there were strong headwinds from local pics and amid contracted audience interest in Hollywood movies, the overseas debut on the Tom Cruise-starrer is $129.6M. On a like-for-like basis including previews, that’s 15% ahead of Mission: Impossible Fallout which would make this the biggest opening for the franchise when removing the Prc. There, the launch was $25.4M, which is 66% below Fallout which released in what was a different time in the market.
Overall overseas, this is the biggest opening weekend in the M:i franchise in 35 markets including the UK, Australia/New Zealand, Brazil, India, Netherlands and Scandinavia.
