You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.
Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

Originally released in 2018, as far as I know All The Creatures Were Stirring is the second ever Christmas horror anthology movie, with the first being the highly entertaining A Christmas Horror Story.
This one has five segments and one encompassing segment which begins and ends the film as well as linking each other segment. In this we see a man and woman who are kind of on a date at a local theatre. They meet outside and once inside are introduced to a couple of strange characters until they are eventually seated to watch the show. The first part of the show then leads into the opening segment The Stockings Are Hung.

Many filmmakers, even including Kevin Smith on a recent podcast, have spoken of how the tools used to make someone laugh are similar to those used to scare. So, it makes perfect sense how well comedy and horror go together. Especially with a novel concept, horror comedies can be a lot of fun. In the case of this week’s newest effort of this ilk, Deep Murder certainly has a terrific hook. Far more funny than it is anything particularly scary, it’s the sort of film that has a ton of fun with its silly concept. High art, this is not, but it’s more than funny enough to recommend. The movie takes place within a soft core porn video. Literally. It opens with an old fashioned VHS beginning and everything. At first, characters like Babs (Katie Aselton), Doug (Jerry O’Connell), Hugh (Quinn Beswick), Jace (Chris Redd), and of course,...

"We need to find him before he finds us..." "Sounds like something a murderer would say." Screen Media has debuted an official trailer for an awkward indie horror comedy titled Deep Murder, a wacky new spoof combining soft core porn cheesiness and a horror who-dun-it mystery. The film is the feature directorial debut of "Funny or Die" veteran filmmaker Nick Corirossi, to give you a sense of the comedic sensibilities in this, and it's got all the usual campiness you'd expect with this kind of concept. The story follows a group of people trapped inside a mansion making a porno, who start dying one-by-one. Starring Jerry O'Connell, Christopher McDonald, Katie Aselton, Stephanie Drake, Quinn Beswick, Chris Redd, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Josh Margolin. This doesn't look that terrible, but it doesn't look any good either. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Nick Corirossi's Deep Murder, direct from Smf's...

“It was all true,” says writer and narrator Mark Ramsey in the early opening of his latest podcast series, “Inside The Exorcist.” He’s describing a particular demonic episode, not the fictional one depicted on screen in the 1973 film that gives this series its title and reason for being. But despite the certitude within that opening recounting, much of the series that follows succeeds at terrifying and informing in equal measure, by leaving just enough to the listener’s imagination. Packed with choice anecdotes and hair-raising episodes from personal and community histories, it’s a time-bending story that uses the strengths of its format to deliver another distinct Hollywood saga.
Much like he did with his previous effort “Inside Psycho,” Ramsey traces the origins of a bedrock horror film from its real-life inspirations all the way through its production. Interspersing the experiences of “The Exorcist” novelist William Peter Blatty, director William Friedkin,...

The League and Legion’s Katie Aselton is among those set to star in a movie described as a “basically like a softcore version of Pleasantville,” according to Variety. To clarify: This is a wacky-sounding, high concept project called Deep Murder, about denizens of the porn world who start to develop beyond their stereotypes once a serial killer is in their midst. So essentially, the murderer takes on Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire’s job in the aforementioned Gary Ross picture. In addition to Aselton, the film is also set to feature reliable character actor Christopher McDonald; Johnny Simmons of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World; Stephanie Drake, otherwise known as Mad Men secretary Meredith; and two of its own writers, Josh Margolin and Quinn Beswick.
Margolin and Beswick are responsible for the screenplay, along with Nikolai Von Keller and Benjamin Smolen, while Nick Corirossi, who has worked for Funny Or...

Fear Inc. introduces an idea that’ll have most horror fans licking their lips, but ultimately fails to stick multiple landings. Director Vincent Masciale attempts to out-meta heavyweights such as Cabin In The Woods, but his self-serving plea to genre lovers comes across as more desperate than inspirational.
Characters talk in dialogue from past genre classics, making Luke Barnett’s screenplay seem poser-ish by incessantly focusing on past classics instead of investing in a righteous fake company. Fun horror appreciation (a Mimesis inspiration) unravels as “reveals” keep on whiffing, until you’re sick and tired of hitting the restart button. Not everyone can be Shyamalan right out the gate, and – unfortunately – when tricks aren’t also treats, everything falls apart.
Lucas Neff stars as Joe Foster, a horror movie buff who has become bored with the predictability of life. Girlfriend Lindsey (Caitlin Stasey) hopes to motivate her slacker lover, but...

2Nd Update (9/23, 3:23 Pdt): An earlier version of this article listed Elle Evans as the actress who plays the title role in The Love Witch. That distinction in fact goes to Samantha Robinson. We regret the error. Update (9/22, 11:37 Pm Pdt): The same day this article was published, Paramount pushed back the release date for Rings from October 28 to February 3, 2017. Original Article: Fall has traditionally been viewed as the prime time of year for the horror film, but this summer was actually a pretty good one for the genre, with movies like The Conjuring 2, Lights Out, and the surprise smash Don't Breathe doing gangbusters business in the midst of blockbuster season. But the year's not over yet! With September in full swing, there are a number of worthwhile (and, yes, questionable) titles looming on the release calendar over the next three months. Some of the Sags choices were head-scratchers to be sure, but we’re thinking that the Oscar picks may be very different when The Academy announces their nominations next month live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. Pt at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Idris Elba and Helen Mirren lead actor nominations with three nods each.Scroll down for full list of film and TV nominations
Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

Stepping out for a swanky shindig, Christina Hendricks showed up at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles on Thursday night (July 16).
The crimson-haired starlet was in the house to celebrate her cover for the Women of Influence issue of Los Angeles Confidential magazine, and she was joined by her “Mad Men” costars Kiernan Shipka and Stephanie Drake.
As for the morning’s Emmy nomination news (Mad Men got multiple nods), Christina told press, "We have been texting all day! There is a very long email chain going on, which is probably still happening in my purse right now!"...

Note: Mad Men spoilers ahead. Now that Peggy’s overseeing creative, Megan’s cashing her divorce check, Dawn’s managing the office, and Miss Blankenship’s six feet under, Meredith (Stephanie Drake) has settled into the role as Don Draper’s secretary. In Sunday night’s episode of Mad Men, Meredith gave her boss a reality check in between answering his telephone and restocking his wet bar. Vulture interrupted Drake while she re-watched “Time & Life” couch-side at her L.A. home to talk about mothering Don, her series keepsake, and a mortifying moment with John Slattery. Meredith had a lot of screen time on this week’s Mad Men. Her big line was telling Don, “Don’t call me sweetheart” — why do you think she decided to assert herself now after so many sexist remarks from the men in the office? She has a special relationship with Don and feels...

As the scribes try to wrap up the lives of characters with a pretty bow, these recent installments have been more character-driven than plot-driven. (To be fair, Mad Men has rarely been a program with a quick pace.) However, in “Time & Life,” written by Erin Levy and Matthew Weiner, there is a deadline to meet. (The episode comes from director Jared Harris, whose performance as Lane Pryce for three seasons had the same refreshing energy, tinged with sharp despair, that the episode possesses.)
The episode begins as a sequel of sorts to “Shut the Door. Have a Seat,” the masterful finale of season three. Back then, McCann Erickson was going to dissolve Sterling Cooper, and so Don led a madcap dash to thwart that effort by creating a new agency. Now, McCann cancels the lease on the Time-Life Building, ushering in a period for the ad men and women to...

Stephanie Drake, who has played crack-up receptionist Meredith since season five of Mad Men, received a promotion on this season's fourth episode, as she landed on her heartthrob Don Draper's desk. And while no airplanes were thrown at her this time (thank you, Joan), she did almost take a couch to the face (Ginsberg, we're looking at you.)
