Pipe, which is behind a platform that allows users to treat their recurring revenue streams as assets, meaning they can unlock capital to upscale their businesses, is getting into the entertainment space.
The company has acquired UK outfit Purely Capital, which specializes in media and entertainment financing. Through the deal, Pipe will launch a new media and entertainment division on its platform, which will allow producers, rights owners, and distributors access to immediate up-front revenue from their long-term licensing contracts from investment-grade streaming services and broadcasters, including Amazon, Netflix, and Disney.
The companies noted that streaming services and broadcasters typically license content for two to five years from a production company, distributor, or other rights holder, and pay quarterly installments over the length of the licensing period, meaning revenues are drip-fed. Together, they plan to allow said rights holders to access that money up front, enabling them to invest more...

Screen Media has acquired “Best Sellers,” a comedy with Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza about a pair of misfits that has a literary twist. The deal is for all U.S. rights, and the company plans to release the film theatrically and on-demand in September.
Directed by Lina Roessler (“Little Whispers: The Vow”), “Best Sellers” centers on an ambitious young editor (Plaza) who decides to try to save the flailing publishing house her father left her by going on a book tour with the bitter, hard-drinking author (Caine) who helped establish the company several decades and an ocean of booze ago.
Cary Elwes, Scott Speedman, Ellen Wong and Veronica Ferres co-star in the film. The screenplay, written by Anthony Grieco, won a 2015 Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting award.
“Not since ‘As Good as it Gets’ have we seen such a mismatched pair take to the road,” said Screen Media in a statement.

Purely Capital, which is headed by Wayne Marc Godfrey, announced Wednesday the launch of their entertainment FinTech receivables platform backed by $150 million from a variety of institutional lenders and banks.
The platform’s founders describe it as a bespoke technology-driven solution to automate, streamline and standardize the process of financing film and TV production, giving distributors and rights owners access to immediate cashflow by bridging the funding gap between when content is licensed to global streaming platforms, broadcasters and publishers, and when those contracts pay out.
“With more high-level buyers than ever hungry for content, it has arguably never been a better time to be producing and distributing film and TV content,” said Godfrey. “While the unprecedented spend by streamers and broadcasters of more than $120 billion last year is impressive, rights owners are being forced to wait two to five years for licensing contracts to be paid out, putting companies under immense financial strain.

The specialty box office is headed towards the second star on the right and straight on till morning with Benh Zeitlin’s magical adventure Wendy, a fresh reimagination of J. M. Barrie’s classic tale of Peter Pan. The pic from Searclight Pictures is Zeitlin’s follow up to his Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild which was released in 2012.
Co-written by Zeitlin and his sister Eliza, Wendy isn’t necessarily cut from the same cloth from Disney animated feature, rather it speaks to Zeitlin’s hyperealstic aesthtetic. The film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year, stars newcomer Devin France in the titular role of Wendy, based on the heroine Wendy Darling of Peter Pan. In Zeitlin’s vision of Neverland, Wendy and her friends get whisked away by a boy named Peter where they get lost on a mysterious island where no one ages and time stands still.

In no coincidence whatsoever, hours before Warner Bros. began screening “The Meg” nationwide, Entertainment Studios dropped the teaser trailer Thursday for its own shark film. “47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter” is the sequel to “47 Meters Down,” last year’s second-highest grossing indie ($44 million domestic). The follow-up, once again from British director Johannes Roberts, was greenlit in October, with the working title “48 Meters Down.”
“47 Meters Down” starred Mandy Moore and was released three months before the premiere of her hit NBC series “This Is Us.” She and Claire Holt (“The Vampire Diaries”) played sisters vacationing in Mexico who encounter multiple sharks while scuba diving; only the former survived. “We’d never really seen a shark movie do poorly, so I felt good about it,” Entertainment Studios founder, owner, chairman, and CEO Byron Allen told IndieWire in 2017, when asked about the film that put him in the distribution business.

Byron Allen’s growing independent outfit Entertainment Studios picked up U.S. distribution rights for action-thiller “Boss Level.”
The film, starring Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo and Ken Jeong, cost $45 million and is slated for a 2019 wide theatrical release.
“Boss Level” is a co-production by Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films, Di Bonaventura Pictures, Carnahan and Grillo’s War Party, and Scott Free. Written and directed by “The Grey” and “The A-Team” director Joe Carnahan, “Boss Level” has a “Groundhog Day,” “Edge of Tomorrow” vibe.
The film follows a retired U.S. Army Special Forces veteran (Grillo) trapped in a never-ending loop, resulting in his death every day. In order to stop his endless suffering, he must figure out who is responsible and stop them.

“‘Boss Level’ is a powerful, action-packed, and highly-anticipated theatrical release,” Allen, head of Entertainment Studios said in a statement. “‘Boss Level’ combines non-stop action with an all-star cast, including Frank Grillo, Ken Jeong, Academy Award-winner Mel Gibson, and Academy Award-nominee Naomi Watts. We are thrilled to have director Joe Carnahan at the helm to deliver what we believe will be a blockbuster.”
Allen’s Entertainment Studios has made some noise in Hollywood, picking up theatrical rights to films other studios would otherwise relegate straight to DVD.
The studio bought what would go on to be 2017’s highest-grossing independent movie, “47 Meters Down,” from the Weinstein Co. The film, starring Mandy Moore has grossed over $44 million to date. Most recently Entertainment Studios released the Kennedy mystery-thriller “Chappaquiddick.”

“Byron and I have been friends for over a decade, and my business partner, George Furla, has known Byron for over 30 years since their USC Film School days. We both believe Byron’s passion and taste are second to none,” producer Randall Emmett said in a statement. “The plan for Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures to give ‘Boss Level’ a wide theatrical release gives our film and writer/director Joe Carnahan’s vision exactly what we had hoped for when we put this project together.”
The deal was negotiated by Entertainment Studios’ Head of Acquisitions, Chris Charalambous, and Wayne Marc Godfrey of The Fyzz Facility on behalf of Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films.
