In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at several music videos from Yellow Claw, directed by Jim Taihuttu. Jim Taihuttu is a Dutch director whose new film Hardcore Never Dies is a breakout hit in Dutch cinemas, and is becoming a festival staple. The film is set in the nineties during the heyday of Gabber culture, a quintessentially Dutch style of beat heavy Electronic music that got famous worldwide. It won't be the last time we will feature Dutch Gabber Culture in this series, as several internationally famous Dutch directors rose to fame with gabber visuals. Taihuttu's first few films were semi-serious drama films, sometimes with a crime edge....

Documentaries about a da Vinci and a dictator, a Pablo Larraín drama with Gael Garcia Bernal, a Donnie Yen martial arts thriller by the late Benny Chan, and Coda — Apple’s record-busting Sundance acquisition — make specialty bows this weekend as the arthouse sector fights through a slow reopening.
“The market is still finding a balance right now,” said Kyle Westphal, theatrical sales manager for Music Box Films (and programming associate for Chicago’s Music Box Theatre). The distributor debuts Larraín’s Ema in 11 theaters in nine markets with plans to expand thereafter — to maybe another 20, but it’s hard to say. “The normal [criteria] like what’s your opening per-screen average right now, those are all upside down,” Westphal tells Deadline.
He said a strong perf by Anthony Bourdain doc Roadrunner (Focus Features) and The Green Knight (A24) “doing as well as it has over the past few weeks, are good signs.

“Community” and “Love” star Gillian Jacobs and “Aladdin” break-out Marwan Kenzari are set to lead Berlin-set romantic comedy “Any Other Night.”
Written by Patrick Whistler and directed by Michiel Ten Horn, the comedy follows two strangers thrown together as their lives are falling apart. Freshly dumped Maggie (Jacobs) and flailing cab driver Max (Kenzari) meet the night of a crippling transit strike, with the latter loading all of Maggie’s worldly possessions into the back of his decrepit van-cab. What should have been a simple fare becomes a wild, late-night odyssey.
“Any Other Night” is produced by Mike MacMillan of Lithium Studios, the outfit behind Cannes Director’s Fortnight selection “Mobile Homes,” alongside Sol Bondy of One Two Films (“The Tale”). Todd Brown of XYZ Films executive produces the film with XYZ handling sales.

As The Netherlands, under lockdown, celebrated the first half of 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam’s online, the physical half – set to take place in June with real audiences, panels and talks without Zoom links attached – still feels like a long way off.
Meanwhile, the industry is hopeful that the swift and pragmatic measures taken by its national funding agency, The Netherlands Film Fund, will be enough to see it through until the end of this year.
In January, the fund, headed by former IFFR director Bero Beyer, confirmed €30 million ($36.1 million) in new government support – double the amount that was available last year – to help the industry ride through its third national lockdown and beyond.
According to Beyer, most of last year’s efforts went into maintaining a certain level of production once restrictions were lifted in June: a national protocol for safety on film sets was devised along with...

Philippines director Dodo Dayao’s supernatural horror project “Dear Wormwood” claimed the top prize on Sunday at the Iffam Project Market, part of the ongoing International Film Festival & Awards Macao.
“Wormwood” is a tale of five women living together in a remote house in the forest, where a mystery illness strikes one of the quintet, followed by a series of cataclysmic events in the surrounding forest. Dayao says he originally conceived the film as a chamber piece about the end of the world, but has expanded it into something larger and more political. He calls it a: “Lovecraftian cosmic horror that seems like a tonal fit for our times.”
It boasts Malaysian director Bradley Liew as producer, alongside Patti Lupus and Bianca Balbuena. Prior to the Macao event it had secured roughly 15% of its estimated $525,000 budget. The winners shared a cash prize of $40,000.

It was just last week that we ran the teaser for Victor Ponten's short crime film Passage and we return now with your first chance to see the complete film. Coming from the same production team behind Jim Taihuttu's acclaimed Dutch crime feature Wolf, Passage stars Teun Kuilboer, Willem de Bruin and Andre van Noordin a story that strikes the balance between realism and style in a way that should appeal to fans of recent European efforts such as Bullhead or The Ardennes or classic 70's American crime fare.Passage is a short thriller about Rick, a young man moving up in the criminal world to see a seemingly simple task from his boss turning into a grim test of loyalty.Clocking in just a shade over...

It's not all that often that we get all hot and bothered about a brief teaser for a short film around these parts but we're making an exception for the new teaser for Victor Ponten's Dutch crime film Passage for a couple reasons. First, while the teaser may be short the actual footage included is very strong, as is Ponten's past body of work. And, second, this thing's got amazing genetics, coming from the same production team that was behind Jim Taihuttu's fabulous Wolf, a film that was simply a massive favorite around these parts.Passage is a short thriller about Rick, a young man moving up in the criminal world to see a seemingly simple task from his boss turning into a grim test of...

Maj-id (Kenzari) is a talented kick boxer from a gray, anonymous suburb in the Netherlands. Whilst trying to support his family through petty crime, his fighting prowess brings him increasing notoriety in-and outside the ring. As the worlds of kickboxing and organized crime begin to blur into each another, Maj-id begins to lose sight of what it is he really wants and also those who are closest to him as well.
Wolf is a black and white film and is entirely in Dutch so therefore, unless you speak Dutch, you will have to read the subtitles. If either of those facts cause you to recoil in horror at even the thought of watching the film, then this definitely isn’t the one for you.

A guy turns up, he’s tough, he’s damaged and he will rise before emphatically falling. It’s the classic setup that so many crime dramas have sworn by over the years. From Little Caesar through to Pacino’s Scarface, the stories of guttersnipes playing Icarus are a veritable institution at this point. It’s a sub-genre that’s become well worn over the years, and Wolf certainly doesn’t feel the need to revolutionize it. That being said, its smorgasbord of well-picked influences and incredibly sharp screenplay make it a great watch nonetheless. Taking the old adage of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” to heart, Wolf isn’t going to set the world on fire, but it still remains thoroughly compelling throughout.

Though ostensibly about a kickboxer, little of Wolf's violence takes place inside the ring. Majid (Marwan Kenzari) isn't so much drawn to a life of crime as he is placed into one by default—a Moroccan living in an unnamed Dutch suburb, he can't accept the drudgery of a day job or the dispiriting notion that he'll never transcend the meager environs in which he grew up.
Most films purporting to show the seedy underbelly of this or that location deal in over-the-top violence and faux grittiness, so it's refreshing that director Jim Taihuttu is more interested in the humdrum goings on of those who split their time between illegal and legitimate activities.

Boom! Without giving away the timing or context, at a certain point Wolf explodes into shards of glass that then recombine to reveal a wider, wilder landscape. Up to that moment, Jim Taihuttu's film was speeding on a straight narrative highway, with a few sweeping curves to guard against the possibility of conventionality. The middle son of an immigrant family at a time when immigrants are not looked upon with particular kindness, he's freshly out on parole working a nothing job because anything else would land him back in jail. He's a lifetime hustler, uneducated and brimming with anger, whose only real...
