When you hear that D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are behind a series, you sit up and take notice. The recent Netflix drama 3 Body Problem had all the suspense and drama we've come to expect from the pair, as a team of scientists and a detective investigate the strange deaths of scientists around the world.
Based on the novel The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, the show scored 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and topped Netflix's global top 10 for 3 weeks. But with only 8 episodes, this uber-bingeable show has already come to an end for many fans.
The good news, a new K-drama landing on April 26th is the perfect show to stream if you loved 3 Body Problem and can't believe it hasn't been renewed for Season 2.
What would you do if there were only 200 days left until the apocalypse?
That is the question the citizens of Korea face in this heart-pounding show.

Salma Hayek Pinault Was Told She Was Too 'Sexy' For Comedy Until Adam Sandler's Grown Ups Came Along
As a producer, Adam Sandler has always managed to attract an impressive litany of talent. Although the films released through Sandler's studio, Happy Madison, regularly get terrible reviews, they tend to be very lucrative and high-profile actors keep coming back for more work. This may be because, as the rumor mill has it, Sandler is a relentlessly decent and kind human being that others love to work with. As such, Al Pacino can be seen in "Jack and Jill," Susan Sarandon appeared in "That's My Boy," and the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Aniston, and Winona Ryder have all played Sandler's wife or love interest in his movies.
In Dennis Dugan's 2010 film "Grown Ups," Salma Hayek Pinault plays Roxanne, a successful fashion designer, and the wife of a talent agent named Lenny (Sandler). "Grown Ups" is about how Lenny is still very close with the circle of...

Japanese mystery writer Kōtarō Isaka saw great success with the adaptation of his novel "Maria Beetle," which became the Brad Pitt action flick, "Bullet Train." The highly-stylized film about five international assassins aboard a swiftly-moving bullet train who find out that their missions are connected performed extremely well at the box office, putting the rest of Isaka's bibliography in high demand with Hollywood executives. As was announced today, the next tale from Isaka to get the cinematic treatment is "Seesaw Monster," aka "Shisō Monsutā."
"Seesaw Monster" is a wholly unique tale unrelated to Isaka's "Hitman" trilogy, which includes "Maria Beetle" and "Three Assassins," the latter of which was the source material for the 2015 Japanese revenge thriller film, "Grasshopper." Interestingly, "Shisō Monsutā" is one of Isaka's short story collections, so there are plenty of ways the stories within could be adapted.

His book, “Maria Beetle,” was recently turned into a feature film titled “Bullet Train,” with one of the best ensemble casts of the year. Anne Hathaway and Salma Hayek Pinault are boarding a bullet train for Netflix. The two actors are set to star in and produce a feature adaptation of the novel “Seesaw Monster,” by Kōtarō Isaka, who wrote the novel on which “Bullet Train” was based.
Plot details of the film are under wraps, but Netflix describes the film as an action-comedy that will see Hathaway and Hayek Pinault play rivals forced to work together. The “Seesaw Monster” book was published in Japan in 2019 and has not yet been released in English, so little information about its plot exists online.
News of the project follows the end of the theatrical run for “Bullet Train,” a Sony Pictures adaptation of Isaka’s thriller “Maria Beetle.” The book, the second in the mystery author’s “Hitman” trilogy, focused on a group of assassins attempting to carry out their assignments on the same Japanese bullet train ride.

Netflix has landed feature rights to Seesaw Monster — a 2019 book by Kotaro Isaka, whose novel Maria Beetle was recently adapted into the David Leitch actioner Bullet Train for Sony, starring Brad Pitt.
Olivia Milch (Ocean’s Eight) will adapt the screenplay, with Oscar winner Anna Hathaway (Armageddon Time) and Oscar nominee Salma Hayek Pinault (House of Gucci) attached to star. Who will direct is not yet clear.
While Netflix is keeping plot specific under wraps, it has described the film as an action-comedy two-hander that will have Hathaway and Pinault playing rivals forced together. "Bullet Train," directed by David Leitch and starring Brad Pitt, is hitting home video this week. In honor of the event, I got a chance to visit Leitch's 87North, the stunt studio he and producer Kelly McCormick recently started in Hollywood. The last time I was there, for the opening event, I got to watch some amazing stunt people kick all sorts of ass. This time, I got to do it myself. Okay, it's possible that I wasn't kicking ass as much as the actual stunt people, but it was an amazing look at the incredible amount of work that goes into films like this.

Korean indie production house, Imtv is developing and will produce a drama series based on the New York Times best-selling novel, “The Island of Sea Women” by Lisa See.
The story is set largely on the remote Korean island of Jeju, among the community of ‘haenyo,’ women who earn a living by free diving for mollusks, seaweed and other sea life from the depths of the ocean.
Representatives of a rare semi matriarchal society, the women work while the menfolk typically stay at home, though property is passed down along male lines.

Hold onto your bucket hats: Sony’s action-thriller “Bullet Train” crossed 100 million at the domestic box office.
It’s an impressive milestone in post-covid times for an original movie that doesn’t involve marquee comic book heroes or intergalactic adventures. It helps, of course, that a bankable actor like Brad Pitt stars in the film, as a heavily therapized assassin named Ladybug.
On Friday, “Bullet Train” reached 101 million in domestic ticket sales, making it only the 14th release this year to hit that benchmark. With another 130 million at the international box office, the film has now earned 231 million in global ticket sales to date.

David Leitch's "Bullet Train" has chugged along to a tidy 222 global box office take, a surprisingly profitable accomplishment these days for a non-franchise film. Adapted by Zak Olkewicz from the novel by Kōtarō Isaka, the action film sees Brad Pitt play an unlucky criminal known as "Ladybug" (everyone here has codenames), a man who's been largely out of his life of crime in order to work on himself. He takes a job to gather a briefcase from a bullet train, substituting for another hardened criminal, but things aren't what they seem--the train is full of assassins, everyone with their own motivation, and Ladybug gets pulled into a situation that's much deadlier than he ever anticipated. It's a colorful, violent, well-choreographed ode to train-based violence, and like any well-managed bullet train itself, we know when it's arriving. That's right, we finally know when "Bullet Train" will come careening out of theaters and into your home,...

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. “Bullet Train” is maintaining the top slot at the box office this weekend, fending off the newcomers “Fall” and “Mack and Rita,” as well as the expanding slasher-comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Sony’s Brad Pitt action vehicle added 3.865 million on Friday. The film remains the widest release in the country with 4,357 locations. The studio is projecting a 13 million gross for the sophomore outing, which would mark a fairly solid 56 drop from its opening last weekend.
“Bullet Train” is expected to expand its domestic cume to 54 million through Sunday. The adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka’s crime novel of the same name carries a 90 million production budget — hefty for a prospective blockbuster outside of a franchise. With an August slate that looks to be fairly light on high-profile new releases, Sony is hoping for “Bullet Train” to leg it out and draw in a solid gross through the month.

This Bullet Train article contains some spoilers.
Bullet Train comes barreling into theaters loaded with a heaping helping of gratuitous violence. This is no surprise from director David Leitch, who began his career as a stuntman, specifically Brad Pitt’s stuntman. Consequently, Leitch is a master at delivering action and ultra-violence on a grand scale.
The title reflects this and its setting, with the Shinkansen, a 50+ year old network of high-speed railways, colloquially known as the “bullet train” in Japan. Since it began, there has not been a single passenger fatality or injury on board these lines due to either derailments or collisions. That all changes in Leitch’s Bullet Train where a sword through the throat is standard operating procedure.
Bullet Train is based on the 2010 Japanese novel, Maria Bītoru (Maria Beetle), by bestselling author Kōtarō Isaka. This book was translated into English last year and retitled Bullet Train to match the movie,...

Do we make our own luck, or carry out what fate has in store for us? This question is the essence of "David Leitch's Bullet Train," based on Kōtarō Isaka's novel of the same name. The comedy-action-thriller is chaotic from the get-go: it opens with Kimura aka The Father (Andrew Koji) boarding a Kyoto-bound train to confront the person responsible for pushing his child off a roof. Meanwhile, assassin Ladybug (Brad Pitt) reluctantly gets on the same train to complete his mission of grabbing a suitcase and getting off at the next station. As...

There’s a scene in Bullet Train that perfectly illustrates what a misfire this supposed action comedy is. A bunch of rival assassins with overlapping and clashing objectives are all on the same overnight high-speed train from Tokyo to Kyoto. Two of them — Brad Pitt’s “Ladybug” and Brian Tyree Henry’s “Lemon” — find themselves in a face-to-face encounter in the quiet car. Naturally, the confrontation turns violent. In a movie that actual took action comedy seriously, this might have been hilarious: How do you beat someone up, maybe even kill them, without making any noise? But here, after the barest nod to the need for silence, rowdy fisticuffs commence, and the only concession to comedy — allegedly — is Pitt snapping at the civilian who shushes them to “eat a bag of dicks”… and then apologizing, because, you see, he’s on a journey to be a better person.

David Leitch’s “Bullet Train” cast is packed with big names — including Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Zazie Beetz, Michael Shannon, and Bad Bunny — but it’s a bit of a treat to see it cram in so many major cameos.
Based on the Kōtarō Isaka’s novel “Maria Beetle” (published in English as “Bullet Train”), the film follows Pitt’s “Ladybug,” a trained assassin dispatched for one job on the eponymous bullet train who finds that things are not at all what he expected — namely, the train is populated with other assassins out to kill him.
Along the way, Pitt’s Ladybug comes into contact with friends, foes, and a random dude. “Bullet Train” producer Kelly McCormick told IndieWire how each cameo came together.

“Bullet Train,” Columbia Pictures’ R-rated action film starring Brad Pitt, made 4.6 million at the box office in its Thursday preview screenings, which began at 3 p.m. from 3,595 locations. It opens wide on over 4,300 screens this weekend.
“Bullet Train” may be the last major release of the summer in what will become a relatively quiet period at the box office after it opens, and Sony is in some ways counting on the fact that it will allow the film to leg out beyond its opening weekend. The studio is projecting a 30 million start for the film against a 90 million budget.
For some comparisons, “Free Guy” with Ryan Reynolds opened last August and made 28.4 million in its opening after first bringing in 2.2 million at the Thursday box office. And the R-rated superhero movie “The Suicide Squad” made 26.5 million in its opening after starting with 4.1 million in its Thursday previews, though that film...

On August 5, ‘Bullet Train’ roared into theaters with a mixed reception from critics and a not-so-fresh rating of 59 on Rotten Tomatoes. Oscar winner Brad Pitt plays Ladybug, a trained killer ordered to collect a briefcase on board the fastest train in the world. He soon discovers competing assassins with connected objectives, each of them fighting to make it out alive.
The supporting cast includes fellow Oscar winner Sandra Bullock as well as Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry and Benito A Martínez Ocasio (also known as Bad Bunny). Directed by David Leitch for Sony Pictures and based on the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kōtarō Isaka, “Bullet Train” was one of the most anticipated films of the summer. But what do the critics think?

Fans of frenetic, bloody action comedies like Smokin’ Aces, Shoot ‘Em Up, Kung Fu Hustle or just about anything from Guy Ritchie are gifted this summer with a likely candidate for their list of escapist favorites. The title of Bullet Train refers not only to Japan’s ultra-modern railway system, but to the collection of assassins and thugs who wend their way through the cars and each other for a variety of reasons. The mix of players and agendas will make little sense… until it does.
David Leitch enhances his credentials as stunt man who worked his way up to becoming a first-rate director, following the examples of Clint Eastwood, Hal Needham, John Ford, John Landis and others. After nearly 20 years of stunt work, with a bevy of acting gigs in the mix,...

The summer is having its last stand for big studio movies this weekend with Sony’s Bullet Train, the comic action-thriller starring Brad Pitt. Based on the bestselling Japanese novel by Kōtarō Isaka, the film is set on the world’s fastest train between Tokyo and Kyoto. Pitt plays an assassin who wants to retire but is roped in to get his hands on a briefcase on the train only to discover that various world class assassins are on the same train with interconnected missions. David Leitch directs, and the large cast also includes Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Brian Tyree Henry.

1997 called and wants its Quentin Tarantino knockoff back. That’s the bottom line on Bullet Train, a new dark comedy/thriller directed by David Leitch. Overlong, tedious, and endlessly self-satisfied, this is a movie that thinks it’s funny to score a montage of violence to an Engelbert Humperdinck song (which is announced as it happens).
Even 25 years ago, the idea got stale fast as one Tarantino wannabe after another tried and failed to emulate the original. The film thinks it’s being clever, but the mix of pop culture-drenched, faux-savvy dialogue, ironic and plentiful needle drops, “look at me” cameos, and cartoon-y violence was a lot better back when Qt was first doing it.
Based on a novel by Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka, the movie is slightly enlivened by hard-working performances from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Joey King, and Brian Tyree Henry, as well as some striking design and cinematography, but...

This is it. This is pretty much the end of summer.
Sony is pulling in Bullet Train, the last big tentpole of a summer that has grossed 2.9 billion domestic through the end of July per Comscore, +142 from the same pandemic period a year ago, but off 17 from the May-July summer frame in 2019. July alone clocked 1.1 billion, the first billion dollar-plus grossing month since December 2019. However, after Bullet Train‘s start, get ready for a two-and-half month dry period that’s greatly lacking mass-appealing films, but crowded with adult counter-programming. Worldwide estimates for Bullet Train are at 60M with at least 30M stateside for the Brad Pitt starring, David Leitch directed R-rated 87 North film.
Even though the Rotten Tomatoes’ critics score is low on the film at 58, the hope is that good word of mouth off the Rt audience score will trigger an overindexing here for the feature take of Kōtarō Isaka’s 2010 thriller novel.

If your summer holiday entertainment menu is in need of a colourful kick up the arse, Bullet Train comes barrelling into cinemas this week. The Japan-based comical caper – weaned on a diet of liquidised Guy Ritchie mockney monologues and lesser Statham Transporter fights – might be as woefully Westernised as its influences sound but there are worse ways to kill two hours.
Returning to his deadly day job after a period of self-reflection, Ladybug (Brad Pitt) is feeling ambivalent about the whole gun-for-hire biz. To the extent that he’s reluctant to pack a piece at all. But his honey-voiced handler Maria (Sandra Bullock) persuades him to step into the shoes of a colleague from the assassin community who is off sick with a dicky tummy. Board an iconic train, grab a case, deliver the case, and pocket the fee. How hard can the assignment be?
Double hard bastard hard, as it transpires.

Brad Pitt’s foray into “gun-fu” action has another legend behind it: Jackie Chan.
Pitt said he channeled Chan when starring in David Leitch’s “Bullet Train,” an adaptation of the Japanese novel “Maria Beetle” by Kōtarō Isaka. Pitt plays an assassin who boards a bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto with the mission to collect a briefcase onboard while fending for his life against other trained killers, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Bad Bunny, Joey King, and Zazie Beetz.
“We always talk about Jackie Chan, how much we love Jackie Chan,” Pitt told Entertainment Tonight of filming the action-comedy, in theaters August 5. “He’s like our Charlie Chaplin, he’s just so underrated. And it’s so amazing the stuff that he’s pulled off. So to do something in that vein, with the comedy infused into the fights, I’ve never done that before!”

Tom Cruise may have been dubbed “Hollywood’s Last Real Movie Star” by the New York Times, but Sony Pictures is betting big there’s at least one other leading man in Tinseltown who can pack theaters on the strength of his name alone.
The studio will test the power of Brad Pitt’s popular appeal as it opens “Bullet Train” in 4,300 North American theaters on Friday. The high-octane assassin thriller is projected to bring in 30 million or more in its box office debut, enough to lead domestic charts. It wouldn’t be a bad start in today’s fractured moviegoing landscape. But those projections are lower than independent box office experts were expecting for a high-profile thriller aimed at adult men.

When it comes to action cinema, David Leitch is one of the genre’s hottest directors working today. His first official film in the director’s chair was Atomic Blonde, but he also served as the uncredited co-director of the first John Wick. Since then, he’s directed Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. His latest film is another off-the-rails actioner. Bullet Train stars Brad Pitt as Ladybug, an assassin hired to do a job while confined on the fastest train in the world—and it’s packed with a horde of rivals. It’s a non-stop thrill ride of ultraviolence that puts Ladybug on a headlong collision course with his lethal adversaries.

Action-star Brad Pitt has returned, following up his 2020 Oscar for Once Upon A Time in Hollywood — in which he plays a washed up stuntman — by reuniting with his own former stunt double, David Leitch.
Leitch, who doubled for Pitt on Fight Club, is at the helm on Bullet Train, Sony’s starry action thriller following five assassins on a Japanese train.
Pitt recalled meeting Leitch during those early stunt double days at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “He trained me for those fights and in a way he [was] helping me develop the character; now he’s a director with his own voice and own vernacular and I’m serving him, he’s the boss. So there was a beautiful symmetry for two old friends.”

Updated with video review: Right from the start, you know exactly what you are in for with Bullet Train, a non-stop mix of violence, comedy and more violence, Japanese-style, as filtered through the lens of director David Leitch, a stuntman-turned-filmmaker whose past credits of Atomic Blonde, Fast & Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, and Deadpool 2 pretty much prepare you for what to expect here. However, even though this was mostly shot on the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City, with some killer production design and a cool train courtesy of David Scheunemann, it undoubtedly feels we are in Tokyo where I am sure the Sony bosses were delighted with the dailies as they came in.
Unfortunately, from my vantage point this just seems like a lark for star Brad Pitt, coming off an Oscar for the far superior Quentin Tarantino masterpiece Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, also from Sony,...

Let us now praise Brad Pitt. Or rather, the whole repertory company of Brad Pitts — the leading man who chased kooky character-actor roles, the matinee idol who stopped worrying and learned to love movie stardom, the wild-card outlier, the endlessly snacking comic relief, the grungy sex symbol, the All-American Adonis next door, the A-list veteran who lets his supernova aura do the talking. You get every single one of them in Bullet Train, the ballistics-and-whistles blockbuster adaptation of Kotaro Isaka’s 2010 crime novel about a commuter train filled with killers...

‘Bullet Train’ Review: Brad Pitt Even Shines in an Action-Packed Star Vehicle that Goes Nowhere Fast
If “Bullet Train” is one of the worst movies that Brad Pitt has ever starred in — better than “Troy,” but a hair short of “The Mexican” — this big shiny nothing of a blockbuster is also a remarkable testament to the actor’s batting average over the last 30 years, and some of the best evidence we have as to why he’s been synonymous with the movies themselves for that entire time. Because that’s the thing about movie stars, and why the last of them still matter in a franchise-mad world where characters tend to be more famous than the people who play them on-screen: They often get minted in good films, but they always get proven in bad ones.
“Bullet Train” is not a good film, but Pitt is having a truly palpable amount of fun in it, and the energy that radiates off of him as he fights...

The bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto takes about two hours and 15 minutes — just the right amount of time to pull off a cartoonishly over-the-top action movie, in which half a dozen assassins shoot, stab and otherwise perforate each other’s pretty little faces in pursuit of a briefcase stuffed with cash. It’s a high-stakes game of hot potato, choreographed and executed by “Atomic Blonde” director David Leitch, in which a self-deprecating Brat Pitt wears a bucket hat and oversized specs, Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play bickering “twin” hitmen Lemon and Tangerine, and “The Princess” wedding crasher Joey King (known here as “the Prince”) is a cunning killer who can fake-cry on command.
These quirky characters — and half a dozen other lethal so-and-sos, with names like “the Hornet” (Zazie Beetz) and “the Wolf” — are identified by giant on-screen labels superimposed over their flash-frozen mugs, the way Martin Scorsese...

So many things went through my mind while watching “Bullet Train”: Bullet trains seem great; why don’t we have them in the United States? Will I ever get to see Mount Fuji? I wonder what flavors of Kit Kats they sell on that train?
These thoughts occurred because my brain refused to engage with this glib, terminally self-satisfied blood-and-bullets extravaganza, one that feels like it was plucked from what we might call the “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” period of American cinema, when Quentin Tarantino’s first two features emboldened far too many young filmmakers to think that they, too, could make a zippy comedy with excessive gunplay, explicit gore, pop-culture references, needle drops, and a briefcase full of cash.
Having programmed a film festival from 1995 to 1999, I was subjected to more bad “Reservoir Dogs” wannabes than the average filmgoer, which might explain why...

The early work of a string of directors comes to mind while watching Bullet Train, among them Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Guy Ritchie, Joe Carnahan and Timur Bekmambetov. The difference is that those filmmakers have mostly moved on from this kind of assaultive bloodbath, which pummels you into numbness with its onslaught of glib dark comedy, escalating carnage and over-the-top gore. David Leitch’s directing credits — Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw — have remained firmly tethered to his stunt background, occasionally with entertaining results. But his latest is so busy delivering violent action with a self-satisfied wink that its contorted plotting and one-note characters get real tedious real fast.
Leitch has served on multiple occasions as Brad Pitt’s stunt double, so there’s a certain symmetry in him shepherding a movie that relies so extensively on the star’s insouciant charisma. But...

Brad Pitt seemed as surprised as anyone when asked at the Bullet Train premiere tonight about his impending retirement.
Pitt had a semi-humorous and very visceral reaction to the question, which was prompted by a recent GQ interview. On the red carpet tonight, he laughed and spun halfway around as if embarrassed before coming back with, “No, I mean…I really have to work on my phrasing.”
He continued, “I was just saying, ‘I’m past middle age and I want to be specific about how I I spend those last things however they may be.’ “
Asked about specifics on those specifics, Pitt said, “I’ve never been a five year plan kind of guy. I’m just, whatever feels right for the day. I still operate that way.”
In a thoughtful and somewhat elegiac interview for the cover of GQ’s August issue, Pitt made news by discussing what...

Tonight at the premiere of Sony’s Bullet Train, Zazie Beetz spoke with Deadline about her part in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Black Mirror, which she revealed she has already wrapped.
“I just came off of shooting that, actually. I just shot that in June,” she told Deadline of the part.
Asked if it was a lot of fun she replied, “I wouldn’t say my character is having a lot of fun, but…I think there’s a really great tongue-in-cheek dark element to it, premonition kind of element. The mirror reflecting back on us.”
Beetz is best known for playing Van on FX’s Atlanta alongside Donald Glover and Lakeith Stanfield. Her Black Mirror casting was revealed relatively recently, in mid-July. You can watch her discuss Black Mirror below.

The Maria Beetle author, alongside the director and writer of its big screen adaptation Bullet Train, have opened up about the film’s decision to cast non-Japenese actors in the upcoming Sony feature film.
In an interview with The New York Times, author Kōtarō Isaka was asked about how his story — which was originally published in Japan in 2010 and had its English language debut in print last year — has been adapted by Hollywood.
According to the Times, the author regards his characters as “ethnically malleable,” and maintains his original Japanese setting and context do not matter as much, as the story’s ragtag crew of killers are “not real people, and maybe they’re not even Japanese.”
Bullet Train, Sony’s big screen adaptation of the story about a high-speed rail full of assassins, features a cast of Black, Latino, Asian and white talent from the U.
