The Gatao franchise has proven to be a rather formidable one, particularly since Gatao 2 found itself streaming on Netflix. The third installment is also available on the streaming platform, continuing the recipe of the previous two, by having a story that unfolds in the same “universe” but focusing on a different character, thus allowing the movies to be watched both continuously and as individual entries. .
“Gatao: The Last Stray is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
This time, the point of focus changes from the North Fort gang leader Ren, to lieutenant Qing, an orphan who has grown up among his gatao brothers. In a rather intense narrative turn than the previous two, the main element here is his romance with photographer Chi, a young girl whose life is proven to be as tragic as his. Of course, mafia politics cannot be missing from a Taiwanese crime movie, as...

To most cinephiles, the name Yoshihiro Hanno is still often associated with film music. Apart from composing the score for his own movies, such as “Ugly” and “A Woman Wavering in the Rain” Hanno has created the music for Jia Zhangke’s “Mountains May Depart” and Isao Yukisada’s “Five Minutes to Tomorrow”, to name just a few examples. In his new directorial effort “Paradise Next”, he tells the story of three people feeling lost because of guilt, regret and a sense of spiritual loneliness, utilizing the conventions of the road movie for them to explore these issues as well as their connections to each other. The result has quite a few aesthetic merits, but fails to convince with its uneven, at times indecisive storyline.

Who would have thought a romantic comedy on the pain of being different could become such ironic and timely viewing in a global pandemic? In “I Weirdo,” a kooky and innovative debut by Taiwanese writer-director Liao Ming-yi, Shot and edited by Liao using the iPhone Xs Max, the production looks no less vibrant for it. The movie’s undiluted cuteness sometimes gets on one’s nerves, but the age-old message that love ails without change and tolerance is given such a fresh spin, it attests to the creativity and increased sophistication of Taiwan’s new generation of filmmakers.
Despite international festival setbacks, “I Weirdo” is off to a good start in the world, winning two major prizes at the Udine Far East Film Festival and the Netpac Award at the Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival. It has a busy festival schedule ahead and should easily land on a streaming service given...

Often have we seen filmmakers be asked a question about what it takes to be one, and often have we heard them say that all that is needed is an idea and a smartphone. First-time director Liao Ming-yi took this advice to heart and shot his independent debut “I WeirDO” entirely using the iPhone Xr.

He goes out only once each month to pay his bills and buy whatever groceries he may require and even then, he must live the house only dressed head to toe in personal protective equipments. On one such excursion, he runs into Chen Ching, a girl dressed similarly in protective gear, who...

The Assassin, Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s painterly spell of a film, tells the tale of a too-merciful assassin tasked by her tutor with her own cousin’s murder. Nie Yinniang, portrayed with aching affect by Shu Qui, is a woman consummately skilled at an art the practice of which has broken her heart. She kills with balletic precision, opening the film with the understated murder of a corrupt government official as he rides in the countryside with his retinue.
