"How did I get here?" "Just retrace your steps, it's what I do when I'm lost..." An early promo trailer has debuted for a peculiar genre mash-up film titled Wonderland Recoil, made by Danish filmmaker Shaun Rana. The film is premiering in December this year at the Psychedelic and Film and Music Festival in New York. Rana describes the film as "a futuristic & surreal take on Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland - with a genre mix of sci-fi / cyberpunk & fantasy." Heavily influenced by John Carpenter and David Cronenberg, the film features some crazy cool practical effects. The story follows a young woman who tries out a psychedelic drug called Nirvana, but ends up trapped in "an inescapable nightmare." What if you could 3D print drugs? Starring David Sakurai, Sisse Marie, Afshin Firouzi, Louise Hylland, and Lene Nystrøm (from the pop group Aqua). This definitely looks like some early Cronenberg mixed in with early Gilliam,...

Years ago, when DVD was in its infancy, I used to frequent a few DVD forums where people would discuss not only this new format but also have in-depth discussions about films that never made it to these shores – oftentimes due to said films getting fancy limited edition box set release; and sometimes (cough) bootleg (cough) discs of certain, more exploitative, films would be passed between members.
That’s how I discovered Versus, the third film from director Ryûhei Kitamura – as a bootleg Dvdr. A bootleg without subtitles, without any information beyond the sheer enthusiasm other people had for the film. And I was blown away. Versus‘ reputation kept growing, eventually getting a legitimate UK DVD release from the now-defunct Tartan Films.

"You should walk away now and if you don't? I will take you to hell." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled The Doorman, set in New York City. This is the latest feature form Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura and it's debuting on VOD this October. Ruby Rose stars in this as a soldier who returns from combat and befriends a family in New York. When a group of thieves, lead by Jean Reno, breaks into their expensive home, she takes the lead and fights back. As Erik Davis pointed out: "this feels like Ruby Rose's Die Hard." The cast includes Louis Mandylor, Rupert Evans, Aksel Hennie, and David Sakurai. If this was really as good as Die Hard, I think we'd have heard more about it by now. ...

I was an immediate fan of filmmaker Can Evrenol once I saw his previous feature, Baskin, and I’ve been patiently waiting to see what kind of movie madness he would unleash on us next. Thankfully, the wait is nearly over, as his latest film, Housewife, comes home to DVD, VOD, and digital platforms tomorrow, courtesy of Rlje Films.
I recently caught up with Evrenol for a quick chat, and we discussed how he approached the story of Housewife, the similarities between this film and Baskin, and collaborating with the film’s star, Clémentine Poidatz, whose character Holly undergoes quite the transformation throughout the movie.
So great to speak with you today, Can, as I am a big fan of Baskin. I would love to hear about what your approach to this story was at the script level, the influences, and basically what Holly's journey is through this film, because...

As Paul Harvey used to say: And now, the rest of the story. “Unbroken: Path to Redemption” serves as a kinda-sorta sequel to “Unbroken,” Angelina Jolie’s harrowing 2014 drama about the War II experiences of Louis Zamperini, the Olympian distance runner and Army Air Forces bombardier who survived 47 days on a life raft after his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean, then endured two years of merciless torture in a Japanese Pow camp. This follow-up — which, like its predecessor, is taken from Lauren Hillenbrand’s nonfiction best-seller “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” — focuses on Zamperini’s postwar struggles with alcoholism, crushing disappointment (an injury prevents him from competing in another Olympics), and recurring nightmares and hallucinations triggered by Ptsd.
There is a happy ending to the story — but, unfortunately, it doesn’t arrive nearly soon enough.
It would be unfair, and not entirely accurate,...

"I feel so much better now... I think Bruce cured my feelings." Rlj Entertainment has debuted a new trailer (via Bloody-Disgusting) for a psychological horror thriller titled Housewife, which initially premiered at a number of genre festivals last year. This erotic horror is about a woman who watched her mother kill her sister and father when she was a child. Her dreams remain plagued by that painful memory, and things get even creepier when a celebrity psychic takes a special liking to her. Clémentine Poidatz stars as Holly, and the cast includes David Sakurai, Alicia Kapudag, Defne Halman, and Ali Aksöz. You have to see the footage to try and make some sense of the film, as it gets really freaky and crazy at the end of this trailer. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Can Evrenol's Housewife, direct from B-d's YouTube: Holly's childhood was a nightmare...

Danish-Japanese actor David Sakurai has been a fairly regular visitor to these pages thanks to a truly eclectic filmography that spans the globe. You want a Hungarian fantasy musical about a fox spirit? He's done that. A Danish produced mystical journey through a bloody afterlife for an iconic Japanese Samurai? Yep, done that, too. Swedish gangster comedy? Yup. And, y'know, little things like a role on Iron Fist and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald. He's done those, too. And if you've ever thought to yourself, "I wonder what would happen if that guy would go on a mission of bloody revenge using a massive metal prosthetic attached to the stump of his severed arm?" Well, now you've got the answer to that, too....

What makes the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies must-sees for Potterheads worldwide is the opportunity they have to shine a light on areas of the Harry Potter canon that were only alluded to in the original seven novels (and eight accompanying films). The first one, for example, focused on Newt Scamander’s (Eddie Redmayne) search for his missing creatures but also teased the larger threat of dark wizard Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).
One of the other important Wizarding World figures who will debut in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel is Nicolas Flamel, who was confirmed to be a part of the film earlier this month. In fact, a new post from the movie’s official Facebook account teased the character last week, along with a shot of his secret journal. “The only known maker of the Philosopher’s Stone,” reads the caption. “What other mysteries may be locked away?...

Recent years have seen a return to giallo, mainly in independent and foreign horror cinema. The genre doesn’t always hold up because it is inherently weird and often nonsensical. For diehard admirers of Fulci and Bava, however, Turkish director Can Evrenol has become an excitingly bizarre voice in cinema. His feature debut, Baskin, blew many a mind two years ago with its hedonistic madness. Evernol returns this year with Housewife, and while it may not reach the levels of incoherent thrills that his first feature achieved, it’s an involving vision of sensory insanity.
As the title suggests, the film centers on the wife of a true crime author, tormented by a traumatic incident in her past. When a long-lost friend convinces her to attend a cult gathering, the group’s charismatic leader—a man who claims to walk through dreams—initiates her into a bizarre mental maze that may undo her.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them doesn’t seem to have made as much of an impact on pop culture as the Harry Potter films, but the Wizarding World spinoff from J.K. Rowling and director David Yates was still a humongous success, earning over $800 million worldwide. With the sequel due out next year, Warner Bros. are just starting to dip their toes into publicizing it and we couldn’t be more excited.
The first tease of the movie was recently shared on the official Fantastic Beasts Twitter account and it features a look at the Ministry of Magic permit file for Eddie Redmayne’s kooky magizooloist Newt Scamander. Unfortunately for him, his application to travel has been denied. Apparently, he was “uncooperative and evasive” when asked for the reasons for his last trip abroad.

"I had been punishing the wrong person..." Saban Films has debuted an official trailer for an action thriller titled Acts of Vengeance (originally titled Stoic), about a lawyer who goes for revenge after his wife and daughter are killed. Yes, we've heard that exact emotional plot description 100 times before, so here's yet another vengeance movie for those who want it. Starring Antonio Banderas as Frank Valera, with a cast including Cristina Serafini as his wife, plus Karl Urban, David Sakurai, Paz Vega, Robert Forster, Lillian Blankenship, and Clint Dyer. This film is obviously all about the action, and the act of getting vengeance (hence the title) though I doubt it has much more to offer. Check it out below if you're interested. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Florentine's Acts of Vengeance, direct from YouTube: A fast-talking lawyer (Antonio Banderas) transforms his body and takes a vow of silence,...

Grindelwald’s dark army continues to swell.
Deadline is reporting that David Sakurai, Danish-Japanese star of Iron Fist, has climbed aboard to play Krall in the untitled Fantastic Beasts sequel. Directed by David Yates, with a screenplay from franchise mastermind J.K. Rowling, the 2018 follow-up takes place a few months after magizoologist Scamander helped to unveil and capture the infamous Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), with Krall being described as an “ambitious and sulky henchman of Grindelwald.”
Still licking his wounds after a clash with the brilliant Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), we understand Fantastic Beasts 2 will open in the year 1927, when Grindelwald has staged his dramatic escape and is now in the process of recruiting more followers to his warped cause. All of this spells danger for the great Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), who once looked to Gellert Grindelwald as a close friend and ally. How things change.

Turkish film-maker Can Evrenol introduced the tale about “madness and paranoia” during Frontières at Bifff.
Having already taken audiences on one descent into hell, Baskin writer-director Can Evrenol looks set to do the same with his next feature Housewife.
The film was introduced for the first time during Frontières at Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff). Speaking to Screen, Evrenol noted that while it’s similar thematically to Tiff hit Baskin, there are also marked differences.
“It’s almost a continuation of my work, the recurring themes of sexuality, family, social claustrophobia and nightmares,” he explained. “This time it’s from a female’s perspective and it’s going to be in the English language. If you say Baskin is like my Carpenter and Stephen King homage, this is going to be Argento and Fulci.”

It was all the way back in 2014 that we first shared a trailer for Sidney Lexi Plaut's Dark Samurai, a gorgeously hynoptic imagining of the life of legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Coming from Denmark of all places, the film stars David Sakurai - familiar to some now from Fantastic Fest hit Liza The Fox Fairy - and after some festival success, including a selection to the prestigious Camerimage, it seemed to drop out of sight. Dark Samurai is inspired by the life of the famous Japanese ronin and warrior philosopher, Miyamoto Musashi. This visually abstract interpretation of the Japanese “Romeo & Juliet” takes place in a timeless world of the Yakuza underworld and a hypnotic Samurai after-life. Flowing seamlessly through life, death, rebirth and...

Liza, the Fox-Fairy (Liza, a rókatündér)
Written by Bálint Hegedûs & Károly Ujj Mészáros
Directed by Károly Ujj Mészáros
Hungary, 2015
Imagine the gnome from Amélie was still sending out travel photos, only, instead of visiting tourist landmarks, he was posing at crime scenes. Such is the droll wit of Liza, the Fox-Fairy. The feature debut from Hungarian director Károly Ujj Mészáros is awash in bizarre and curious pleasures. Perverse, hilarious, and poignant, this absurdist fairy tale still features one of 2015’s most touching love stories.
Amélie from Hell. Perhaps that’s the best way to describe Liza, the Fox-Fairy. Like Amélie, Liza (Mónika Balsai) wants to be the plucky heroine who meets the perfect man and lives happily-ever-after. She slavishly memorizes a Japanese romance novel, hoping the words will magically change her fortunes. Sadly, fate has other plans for her. In this case, fate is her imaginary friend, Tomy Tani (David Sakurai...

Late last year, we got a taste of the Danish martial arts short Echoes of a Ronin, in the form of a gallery of images. Now, the film is finished, and you can watch it in its entirety here, with English subtitles included. Directed by Shaky Gonzalez and starring David Sakurai, Echoes of a Ronin tells a familiar story of greed, revenge and honor, only now with Danish restaurants as a backdrop. It's a stylish effort with some great fight choreography by Tim Man (of Ninja 2 fame), and with a running time of 20 minutes it doesn't even get a chance to outlast its welcome. Director Shaky Gonzalez and star David Sakurai have teamed up to create something very unusual for their homeland of Denmark: A martial arts drama rooted in the Japanese bushido code. Sweden's Tim Man - a rapidly rising star in the fight world thanks to his stellar work as choreographer on Ninja 2 and the like - provides choreography here while also appearing in a support role and the results thus far are looking very good indeed. The story is set in a contemporary Scandinavian/Asian environment with a universal story about injustice and loss of innocence combined with recognizing ones destiny. This is all seen through the eyes of a child and through her experience see how man, despite being protected by morals and a strong code...

While the concept of a Danish martial arts film sounds considerably less strange now than it did before the arrival of the excellent Fighter a few years back it's still surprising enough that it merits a mention.
Director Stefano Gonzalez and actor / co-producer David Sakurai (yes, I know, a very unlikely pair of Danish names) recently got together with Pusher 3 co-star Marinela Dekic (also not sounding like a Dane) to create a low budget short film titled Love Is Vengeance. Spun out from a comic book concept and intended as a tribute to Bruce Lee, those involved enjoyed the process enough that Gonzalez and Sakurai are now prepping a feature length martial arts affair titled The Elite.
