“Oppenheimer” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 3. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Anatomy of a Fall” and “Killers of the Flower Moon ” — as well as “Maestro” and “Past Lives.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “The Holdovers ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “Poor Things,” plus “Air”, “American Fiction” and “Barbie.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 19 times, including the 2023 winner for best comedy/musical editing, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.
The other Oscar nominees are “The Holdovers” (edited by Ace president Kevin Tent), Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Anatomy of Fall,” and “Poor Things.”
“Spider-Man: Across the Universe” won the animation award, “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” earned theatrical documentary honors, and “Escaping Twin Flames” took the non-theatrical prize.
TV editing winners included “The Last of Us” for drama series, “Beef” for limited series, “How I Met Your Father” for multi-camera comedy series, “The Bear” for single-camera comedy series,...

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped the dramatic feature editing category at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Ace Eddie Awards, while “The Holdovers” won the category for best edited comedic feature during Sunday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Jennifer Lame edited “Oppenheimer,” which also took top honors at last week’s SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The recent honor further cements the film’s position to take top prize at the Oscars next weekend. But she faces competition from Kevin Tent, who won here for “The Holdovers.”
Should Lame go on to win the Oscar, it will mark nine years since a woman has won. Margaret Sixel won in 2015 for “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Tent, also president of Ace, kicked off the ceremony addressing last year’s labor strikes, saying, “It’s great to look out and see so many rock star editors…Last year was an extraordinarily...

Take that, Golden Globes. Chelsea Handler did a masterful job hosting the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards, nailing the jokes and showing she completely understood the assignment. Hosting for the second consecutive year, Handler kept the show on track and even called an audible late into the broadcast, bringing Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie to the stage to accept the Best Comedy Movie award – one of a dozen not scheduled to be handed out on stage.
The acceptance speeches were heartfelt, lively, and memorable, and America Ferrera’s SeeHer acceptance speech will go down as one of the better speeches in Critics Choice Awards‘ history. Harrison Ford kept his Career Achievement Award acceptance speech short, recognizing the positive changes in the industry over his decades as an actor.

The great Paul Giamatti seems well on his way towards winning an Oscar for The Holdovers, with the actor taking home another prestigious award at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. Emma Stone also took home a trophy for Poor Things. At the same time, Christopher Nolan and Oppenheimer dominated the rest of the big awards, making it seem like the giant iceberg a lot of other awards season hopefuls are bound to crash into. The other half of the Barbenheimer equation, Barbie, was no slouch either, taking home a Best Screenplay award and Best Comedy. Still, it was shut out of the acting awards, with Robert Downey Jr. on his way to a potential Oscar win, nabbing best-supporting actor for Oppenheimer. Da’Vine Joy Randolph won a much-deserved Best Supporting Actress award for The Holdovers. Poor Bradley Cooper and Maestro were entirely shut out, with that film’s chances of winning major...

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
To fully appreciate the financial success of Greta Gerwig’s zeitgeist-shifting smash hit “Barbie,” let’s briefly consider some of the other heavy-hitters it trounced at the box office: John Wick, Indiana Jones, Transformers, the “Fast and Furious” family, and The Flash. The number-one film of the year may have sprung from beloved (slight shudder here) intellectual property, but Gerwig so wholly transformed the iconic doll, shaping a new mythos around her in the process, that nothing about “Barbie” felt been-there or done-that in the slightest.
While Hollywood’s affection for — and attention to — the kind of franchise features that used to regularly top the box office charts is on the decline, the success of “Barbie,” the sort of fresh take on seemingly old material that should...

Awards Season Barbie is already proving to be a dominant force in the market.
Who could have imagined it was possible that a movie about a Mattel doll come to life would become not only the box office juggernaut of 2024 but also a growing awards magnet? We live in unpredictable times indeed, boys and girls. But now that “Barbie” has hauled in more than $1.4 billion worldwide and topped both the Golden Globes movie nominations with nine and now the Critics Choice Movie Awards (announced Wednesday morning) with a record-breaking 18, the film is more than just trending – it’s overachieving on a grand scale.
Or maybe we should call it just plain old achieving.
SEECritics Choice Movie Awards: ‘Barbie’ sets record with whopping 18 nominations
Should we have seen this coming? Maybe. Greta Gerwig’s comedic masterpiece is perhaps the one movie of 2023 that everyone is united on in love and admiration.

“Deep Dive” is an in-depth podcast and video essay series featuring interviews with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this edition, the IndieWire Crafts and Special Projects team partnered with Warner Bros. to take a closer look at “Barbie” with director and co-writer Greta Gerwig and nine members of her creative team who breathed life into the iconic Mattel doll.
The tagline “Barbie is everything” turns out to be pretty apt. “Barbie” contains within it multiple kinds of high-concept comedy, musicals, action sequences, mother-daughter stories, and a liminal void wherein Barbie (Margot Robbie) can meet her maker, Ruth Handler (Rhea Pearlman), and elect to transcend toyhood to become a human woman. All in less than two hours!

After a historic summer, Greta Gerwig’s smash-hit film, Barbie, arrives in IMAX today, and previously unseen post-credit scenes are coming with it. In a new interview with Variety, cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto has shared that the new footage is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the movie’s unseen scenes go. Giving insight into what ended up on the cutting room floor, he highlighted one deleted scene that gave Gerwig quite a chuckle: a moment with Michael Cera inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.
In the film, Cera portrays Allan — the now-discontinued Mattel doll intended to be Ken’s friend — and delivers the movie’s “most reliably funny jokes,” according to Consequence’s Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller, who even suggested that Cera’s memorable performance is Oscar-worthy. A scene cut from 'Barbie' would have seen Midge giving birth. The character was introduced by Mattel in 1963 as their flagship doll's best friend and a now-discontinued pregnant version of the doll was played by Emerald Fennell in Greta Gerwig's summer comedy based on the toy franchise.Leaked photos from behind the scenes of the film seen on a corkboard in an 'Art of the Cut' interview with editor Nick Houy have now revealed that there were plans for Midge to give birth in a post-credits joke for the film, alongside Dame Helen Mirren - who appears as the Narrator - as a midwife.Other scenes cut from the fantasy comedy - which sees Barbie discover what it means to be human after leaving Barbie Land - included a "fart opera" but the joke was cut due to a poor reception at a test screening, according to Greta.

Now that Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking Barbie is out, all the twists, turns, and painfully-relatable themes are being digested by a nation of movie-goers… just like something was, ehm, digested by some characters in an early cut of the film. That’s right, folks, Gerwig has confirmed that there was once a version of Barbie that included a “fart opera.”
The news came in an interview with IndieWire, in which Gerwig revealed that of the many scenes she and editing collaborator Nick Houy had hoped to include in the film, they did have to cut one (pun intended). “We had, like, a fart opera in the middle [of Barbie],” Gerwig said. “I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus.”
While neither Gerwig nor Houy have offered more context as to what exactly a “fart opera” is, nor how it would’ve come to be in the film,...

Greta Gerwig had to cut a "fart opera" from 'Barbie'.The 39-year-old filmmaker and her editor Nick Houy had attempted to incorporate the flatulence scene into the acclaimed new movie but ultimately scrapped the plans after it didn't amuse audiences during test screenings.Speaking to IndieWire, Greta said: "We've always tried to get in a proper fart joke and we've never done it. We had like a fart opera in the middle (of 'Barbie'). I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus."Houy added: "We had a lot of fart jokes in this one, so I thought there was a chance we would get one in. Much higher chance of it being in 'Barbie' than 'Little Women'. Too bad it didn't make it."It was in the wrong place, too. We need to work it into a more significant narrative moment next time.

Greta Gerwig said she and her editing partner Nick Houy threw out a “fart opera” scene that was supposed to happen in the middle of the movie.

Houy, who has worked with Gerwig on all of the projects she’s directed, added that the scene was also misplaced, but that they do plan on executing the plan at some point.

In a new IndieWire interview with the collaborators, it was revealed that “Barbie” had a “fart opera” in the middle of its runtime that got cut because it wasn’t received as well as Gerwig hoped.
“We’ve always tried to get in a proper fart joke and we’ve never done it,” Gerwig said. “We had like a fart opera in the middle [of ‘Barbie’]. I thought it was really funny. And that was not the consensus.”
“It was in the wrong place, too,” Houy added. “We need to work it into a more significant narrative moment next time.”
Houy has been the editor on all of Gerwig’s solo directorial outings, but “Barbie” presented unique challenges.

When Greta Gerwig sent her longtime editing collaborator Nick Houy the script for “Barbie,” the first thing he texted her back was a question: “Are they going to let you do it?”
Indeed, inside the box of the “Barbie” movie is a bonkers melange of musical numbers, existential dread, slapstick visual comedy, gender politics, earnest yearning for connection, and a Snyder Cut joke that definitely feels like Warner Brothers should’ve killed it. That it exists in the form it does feels as unreal and miraculous as Barbie Land itself. But the film also has a momentum that was familiar to the challenges Gerwig and Houy have set for themselves in their previous collaborations, “Lady Bird,” and “Little Women.”
Just as “Little Women” alternates between past and present, “Barbie” manages transitions between worlds that are more or less heightened, but always at least a little, as Gerwig put it, “bananagrams.

Farts! They're either the funniest thing ever or offensive to the extreme, depending on who you ask. A good fart joke, executed well, can become iconic — think of the now-famous campfire scene in "Blazing Saddles." But they can also be employed in a lazy, cheap fashion, and that can raise a stink. Comedies have been employing fart jokes for many, many years now, and you're either on board with that sort of windy humor or you're ready to pinch your nose.
"Barbie," Greta Gerwig's blockbuster comedy about the Mattel doll come to life, is void of fart jokes. But as it turns out, that wasn't always the case. Yes, we could've had farts galore in "Barbie," and in some alternate universe, audiences right now are chuckling away at all the farts up on the pink-hued screen. But that's not the world we live in. Here, we can only dream...

Its all-female Supreme Court buys a lot of goodwill, but even so, it’s a tricky ask to get audiences to be comfortable with the relentless playfulness, artificiality, and earnestness of “Barbie.” The film’s tone isn’t quite everything (though it encompasses a lot), Greta Gerwig’s take on Mattel’s IP contains everything from a beach battle ballet to several quests for self-actualization to the ultimate trans-dimensional travel montage.
But as Gerwig and editor Nick Houy were constructing the footage and finding a way to settle the audience in the bonkers world of Barbie Land, they found a guiding hand: music.
It only makes sense that, given Barbie Land exists adjacent to the real world, it would have its own bespoke music playlist. Of course Barbie (Margot Robbie) has a soundtrack to her life. But Gerwig, Houy, and music editor Suzana Peric worked with composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt,...

Margot Robbie went with one of the most dramatic looks while going with Barbie premiere in Los Angeles. There are a lot of films and movies that are going to release and due to the same reason, a lot of promotional event is also happening.
Sometimes it is related to the premiere of these movies and series where we see celebrities coming on the red carpet with their best look.
While other times, it is just going on some show and promoting their movies or series with again best of the looks.
Among them is the famous actress Margot Robbie was looking beautiful as ever while arriving on Sunday in Los Angeles. It was the Global premiere of the movie called Barbie in which the actress went with one of her shimmering looks. She was looking like a doll coming from 1960 Avatar.

The official trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures’ most buzzed-about summer movie, Barbie, promises this movie’s for those who love Barbie – and for those who hate the doll. And if you were on the fence about paying for a ticket to see writer/director Greta Gerwig’s twisted take on the popular doll line, the trailer should be the deciding factor. The trailer provides a glimpse of what’s in store once the dolls leave their perfect world and discover what it’s like to live in the real world. Cue an full-on existential crisis.
The cast is led by Oscar nominees Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken. America Ferrera (Superstore), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War), Issa Rae (Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films) also star.

Arguably the best look yet at “Barbie” was released Thursday by Warner Bros. The new trailer for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming film mixes goofy comedy with some existential conflict while also showcasing the star turns from leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
The “Barbie” main trailer opens with the title hero (Robbie) having yet another “best day ever” and a blowout party that gets interrupted when Barbie asks her friends if they ever think about dying. The cracks in her happy facade continue from there before Barbie and Ken (Gosling) are forced to go to the “real world” to find out the “truth about the universe.” Once in reality, Barbie and Ken are faced with confrontation and disinterest as they seemingly must work to escape the clutches of a corporate overlord (played by Will Ferrell). Think “Elf” meets “Lady Bird” meets “The Lego Movie.”

“Barbie” has got us all a-buzz for the movie now that its latest trailer has shown us a bit more about what we can expect from the Greta Gerwig-directed movie. Written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach, little is known of the movie in terms of plot but the official IMDb synopsis reads: “To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.”
The movie stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling while a host of other A-list stars also appear as variations of Barbie and Ken, including Issa Rae and Kate McKinnon and Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa. The movie could be up for a hell of a lot of awards for its ensemble cast, while Gerwig and Baumbach carry awards pedigree of their own (three Oscar nominations each...
