John Mulaney‘s new Netflix series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA premiered on Monday night (May 6), and all anyone can seem to talk about is his new hairstyle. The show, which is part live talk show, part sketch show, and part stand-up comedy, features a wide range of guests. For example, Monday’s episode saw appearances from Jerry Seinfeld, Will Ferrell, St. Vincent, Richard Kind, Stavros Halkias, Natasha Leggero, Chelsea Peretti, and more. But the biggest star was Mulaney’s new cut, which was long in the back and featured 1990s-style curtains at the front. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the comedian’s new do, and opinions were mixed, to say the least. “I like the Clark Kent thing John Mulaney’s got going on with his hair,” one fan wrote on X. “John Mulaney’s hair in Everybody’s in LA is beautiful,...

Meg Stalter is taking the lead in her latest feature “Cora Bora.”
The comedy, which premiered at the 2023 SXSW Festival, stars the “Hacks” breakout actress as the titular musician who goes home to win back her girlfriend only to realize it’s much more than her love life that needs salvaging.
Hannah Pearl Utt directs the comedy from a script by Rhianon Jones. The cast includes Jojo T. Gibbs, Manny Jacinto, Ayden Mayeri, Thomas Mann, Chrissie Fit, Andre Hyland, Margaret Cho, Chelsea Peretti, and Darrell Hammond. The film features original music and a score composed by indie artist Miya Folick.
“I’m thrilled for audiences to get to see Meg in a leading role and to fall for her character the way I have,” director Utt said in a press statement.
The IndieWire review called Stalter a “whirlwind and a universe unto herself” who boasts “her unique brand of uncomfortably confident loser” onscreen.

The actor died in December 2023 at the age of 61 following a brief illness. Beatriz and her former co-stars, such as Andy Samberg, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, and Chelsea Peretti, saw each other in March to remember Braugher.
“[It was] a chance for all of us to get together and make each other laugh,” Beatriz told People about the reunion. “And it was also a chance to talk about André. It came up immediately, and then we put it away for a while.”
She continued, “But at the end of the dinner, by the end, we were all just sharing stories about him and our memories of him. And he lives in our hearts forever and ever.”

Chelsea Peretti was choked up remembering her deceased Brooklyn 99 co-star, Andre Braugher, during an interview with The Talk on Friday, recalling that Braugher was “always singing” while on the lot for shoots.

Apparently eight seasons together was not enough. The cast of comedy-drama Brooklyn Nine-Nine gathered for a meet-up that was heavy on reminiscing.
Chelsea Peretti posted reunion photos on Instagram with the show’s other stars: Dirk Blocker, Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joel McKinnon Miller, Joe Lo Truglio, Melissa Fumero, and Andy Samberg.
Of course, it was keenly felt that Andre Braugher was missing. The actor who played Capt. Raymond Holt died unexpectedly in December.

Breakfast at Little Dom’s is doing nothing to assuage Chelsea Peretti’s current frustration with Los Angeles. We’re discussing how inescapable the entertainment industry can be in a booth branded with a dedicatory plaque to Jon Hamm. One table over, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is taking a meeting and, on the other side of the window, a man walking his dog is starting to look a little familiar. “To make good art, you need to live your life, but most people here are just working and working out,” says Peretti, turning her attention to the man outside. “I’m pretty sure that’s Max Minghella. Reilly, Nathan Fielder, Billy Eichner, Lionel Boyce, Abbi Jacobson, Rachel Sennott, Jordan Firstman, Reggie Watts, Paul Downs, Vanessa Bayer and Chelsea Peretti. Also, there was the show’s director Burnham with rumored girlfriend Phoebe Bridgers.
The stars responded to the show, which “explores the events of her life that have brought her to this moment,” with a standing ovation. Before that, however, they lined up for pics on a step-and-repeat that featured oversized images of Berlant in various poses (seen above). Drinks and light...

In recent years, Netflix has lost plenty of licensed content, but many will be surprised to learn that some of the removals from Netflix have been Netflix Original titles. Here’s the complete list of every removed Netflix Original since 2017.
To get to the bottom of why Netflix Original titles leave, they usually fall into one of several categories.
The majority leave because Netflix does not own them. Instead, they’re distributed internationally exclusively by Netflix for a fixed period of time. Secondly, it could be temporary or permanent licensing problems. For example, Beat Bugs left due to licensing problems for a short period of time, whereas Slasher was removed for some time because the owner of the series went bankrupt. Thirdly, some titles are time-specific. These include New Year’s Countdowns, for example. We won’t list these below. Next,...

Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed to be lung cancer, his rep has confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
Braugher died Monday at 61 after what his rep then said was a “brief illness.”
He starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train and the platform was pushed onto the track — while also trying to comfort him in his dying moments.

At first blush, Andre Braugher cut a similar figure to Raymond Holt, the NYPD captain he spent eight seasons playing on the Fox-turned-NBC sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Both were imposing figures who carried a sense of gravitas: Braugher as a Juilliard-trained, Emmy-winning dramatic actor; Holt as a gay, Black police officer who’d overcome prejudice to climb his agency’s ranks. Both found themselves in a working environment with a zaniness that was superficially at odds with their well-earned reputations, whether a joke-filled network comedy or the precinct it was named for.
But just like his character, Braugher’s last major leading role in a television series before his death on Monday at just 61, the performer took naturally to this new environment. The straight man is a classic archetype in an ensemble comedy, and Captain Holt is initially introduced as a somber foil to Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), a “Die...

It was a criminally good day for comedy on September 17, 2013, when Brooklyn Nine-Nine hit our TV screens. Created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur, the Golden Globe-winning series followed the cops and employees at a fictional NYPD precinct. With their roles on the show, Andy Samberg and Terry Crews added another title to their comedy resumés, Andre Braugher showed off his funny side after years on TV dramas, and Stephanie Beatriz, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, and Chelsea Peretti gave breakout performances. Though it was never a ratings hit, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was so adored that NBC ordered another three seasons of the show after Fox canceled it in 2018. And the clips below are all the evidence you need. Here are the 10 most-watched videos from Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s YouTube channel. 10. A sci-fi comedy by Mel Eslyn and a literary noir by Alice Troughton – who are, respectively, the longtime producer for the Duplass brothers and an award-winning UK television director — debut in limited release this weekend, alongside Adele Lim’s Joy Ride, a Lionsgate wide-release – marking first-time feature film debuts by three women.
(Noting that Chelsea Peretti’s recent Tribeca-premiering film First Time Female Director sort of re-coined that phrase.)
Troughton called it “really reassuring” to see female helmers opening films. In the UK “we are below 20% of the directing force and … directorial women’s roles are dropping, as are roles for people of color. So the diversity is sort of slacking off a bit after a really good push. So it felt really important as somebody who had the privilege to be in the position to go and make a film, to go and do it.

First Time Female Director lead star, writer and director, Chelsea Peretti is a lot of things.
A talented stand-up comedian who can consistently make audiences (including myself) laugh. An energetic character actor who can make even the mundane whacky as evidenced by her character, Gina Linetti, in the police procedural comedy, Brooklyn 99. A sharp and hilarious writer as seen in series like Parks and Recreation and Kroll Show. She is clearly talented in a lot of fields, but unfortunately, I don’t believe that directing is one of them.
Despite First Time Female Director having more than a handful of moments that made me chuckle, and even laugh at times, this is a film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, that feels incredibly amateurish and bare-bones in terms of story, presentation and cohesiveness.

The Tribeca Film Festival, co-founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro to revive Lower Manhattan’s cultural scene, doesn’t launch Oscar contenders at the rate of Sundance, Cannes and the Big Fall Four, but it nevertheless facilitates a hub for some of our very best artists to screen new work and discuss the state of their industry. The 2023 edition hosted talks featuring Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher, Hailee Steinfeld, Paul McCartney, Ayo Edebiri, David Letterman, Billy Porter, Mike Flanagan and Chance the Rapper, as well as the directorial debuts of Michael Shannon, Chelsea Peretti and couple Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater.

Written and directed by Chelsea Peretti, First Time Female Director lives in the self-deprecating world of meta storytelling. Debuting at the Tribeca Festival in the Spotlight Narrative section, Peretti put so much of herself into this narrative, it could work as a documentary. It’s also such a comically honest portrayal of what women must endure if they want to get ahead in any career, let alone the theater business. Having to constantly prove to yourself and others that you are capable is so exhausting, but can also be rewarding if you are set up for success. Many are often left to fend for themselves, and the film shows one way of how that can happen.
In addition to Peretti, First Time Female Director boast a hefty cast including Amy Poehler, Andy Richter, Benito Skinner, Blake Anderson, Megan Stalter, Megan Mullally, Jak Knight, and Xosha Roquemore, Kate Berlant and many more.

You can probably guess the premise of Chelsea Peretti’s occasionally amusing film First Time Female Director from its title. The comedy, written and directed by the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star, follows the misadventures of a local theater’s first woman director — how scandal thrusts her into the spotlight and a lack of institutional support tries to yank her out of it. In its roughly 29 seasons, productions at the fictional Regis Theater in Glendale have only ever been directed by men. Sam, an anxious playwright played by Peretti, is about to change that.
As with so many recent historical firsts, Sam’s appointment is propelled by a misbehaving man. When a shocking impropriety shakes the community theater, its artistic director Sheldon Clifford (Andy Richter) fires popular director Greggy Thompson (Tim Heidecker). Sam wasn’t Sheldon’s first, second or, if we’re being honest, even third choice, as evidenced by...

A great movie comedy is something of a miracle, a combination of circumstances, personnel, and timing that would seem impossible to replicate, even under the most ideal circumstances. So first and foremost, the baffling thing about Chelsea Peretti’s “First Time Female Director” is that, once you set its title-embedded topicality aside, it’s basically a beat-for-beat remake of Christopher Guest’s “Waiting For Guffman.” Why risk the comparison—especially when you’ll come out looking so dire?

The Tribeca Festival excised “Film” from its name in 2021, and while it’s true that the annual celebration of all things entertainment has expanded to include plenty of television and immersive programming, the movies make it a must-attend event. This year’s lineup is no exception. It has big-name actors such as Michael Shannon and Jennifer Esposito trying their hand at directing, along with revelatory performances from stars like Nick Jonas. But what makes Tribeca so exciting is that it’s a springboard for bold new voices. As the fest gets ready to kick off on June 7, here are nine movies not to be missed.
First Time Female Director
Chelsea Peretti, who stole scenes as the social media-obsessed assistant on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” slides behind the camera for this comedy about a writer who is forced to take over a production of her latest play after her male predecessor is fired for inappropriate behavior.

With 109 narrative and documentary features, as well as a bevy of shorts, TV series, podcasts, games and live music events, the Tribeca Festival offers a wide range of media in its 22nd year.
“It’s all about creating an entire festival program that harmonizes together,” says Tribeca Festival director and VP of programming, Cara Cusuamno. “The idea of discovery is a touchpoint that we come back to quite a lot. Whether it’s the discovery of a specific voice, an artist, or first-time creator in film, television, immersive or the discovery of the audience itself experiencing something that they had not sought out before.”
The festival runs June 7-18. As always, Tribeca Festival will spotlight a number of projects directed by boldface names including Frank Marshall (“Rather”), Chelsea Peretti (“First Time Female Director”) and Steven Soderbergh (“Full Circle”).
“It’s quality first,” says Cusuamno. “These projects would not be in...

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.
The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.
In addition to those selections, Tribeca will feature the North American and New York premieres, respectively, of Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, and Randall Park’s Shortcomings, which debuted at Sundance. And the festival will close with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, the directorial debut of Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro.
