Stephen King is pretty much universally considered the best horror writer of all time. Many of his books have been adapted for the screen. But while there are obviously some changes that have to be made when adapting a story for television or film, it's rare that the ending is completely rewritten.
This film is one of those rare examples. But don't worry, we won't spoil the ending for you. You'll want to find out for yourself.
Based on a Stephen King novella
The Mist is a novella first published in 1980. It was part of King's Dark Forces trilogy and focused on Lovecraftian horror, in which fear is based on the unknown. Instead of a single threat to the protagonists, King introduced several different monsters that revealed themselves in different ways.

‘The Mist’ 4K Ultra HD Review – There’s a Reason We’re Still Talking About This Movie 16 Years Later
Stephen King adaptations have always been hit and miss. Before Mike Flanagan came along, there was one filmmaker who could always be trusted with King’s material: Frank Darabont, whose first foray into filmmaking was a short adaptation of “The Woman in the Room.” After making a name for himself as a screenwriter with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob, Darabont made his feature directorial debut with 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption and followed it up with The Green Mile in 1999.
His thus-far final King adaptation came in 2007 with The Mist, which finds a group of locals trapped in a grocery store while an ominous fog shrouding mysterious secrets envelopes their quaint Maine town. A microcosm of any community, the supermarket is a canny setting for a contained thriller. The divisive mob mentality and pigheaded self-righteousness that manifests under pressure is even more poignant in a post-Trump world.

Lionsgate has announced that they will be giving the 2007 Stephen King adaptation The Mist (watch it Here) a 4K release on October 3rd – and this release will include the black and white version of the film! Director Frank Darabont put together a black and white version of The Mist because he had initially envisioned shooting the movie that way.
The 4K release will include a steelbook edition, a regular edition, and a Best Buy exclusive edition. But no matter which of these you buy, you’ll be getting both the color version of The Mist and the black and white version on the 4K disc. Copies of one edition can be pre-ordered on Amazon.

HBO Max has cooked up a slate of several classic films as well as a few newer ones arriving this January. “The Menu” (2022) arrived early in the month after releasing theatrically in November before Thanksgiving. Danny DeVito’s “Matilda” (1996) can contend with Netflix’s new movie musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book. And while Tom Hanks’ latest role “A Man Called Otto” has hit the box office, several of his films have landed at various streamers if you’re hankering for more after the tear-jearking feature film.
Hitting the sweet spot for dog movie lovers is “Marley and Me,” starring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, and the animated wonder “The Book of Life” is also newly added.
Here are some of the best new movies to stream on HBO Max in January 2023.

"The Mist" is a movie that already came built-in with an alternate ending, as it were, in that Stephen King's novella left a different blueprint for how it might end. What King had written was more open-ended and hopeful about the fate of David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and the other survivors, including two characters played by future "The Walking Dead" actors who were meant to marry on the show.
This week, as "The Mist" celebrates its 15th anniversary, /Film has been looking back at the movie through our own Eric Vespe's extensive new oral history, which contains some great behind-the-scenes stories and insights from the cast and crew. Director Frank Darabont has defended the film's unforgettable ending, and both he and producer Denise M. "The Mist" turns 15 this week, and Frank Darabont's cinematic take on Stephen King's novella has developed quite the legacy since it first debuted to mixed reception. In retrospect, the film has a whole lot going for it, from a prescient subplot about the dangers of religious zealotry to a pitch-black ending, the depressing likes of which few other horror films have ever tried to achieve. It also has lots of cool, freaky monsters. The creatures of "The Mist" spend most of the film hiding in the mysterious eponymous clouds that suddenly swallow up a Maine grocery store, but in one memorable sequence, they appear in the flesh to terrorize the people locked inside.
In honor of the film's anniversary, /Film's Eric Vespe has compiled an oral history of "The Mist" featuring various separate interviews with cast and crew members. Along the way, he spoke with both writer-director Darabont...

It's been 15 years since the movie premiered, and people are still talking about that ending to "The Mist." It's an ending that almost seems happy on the surface: The storm turns out to not be nearly as all-encompassing as it originally appeared, and the military is now swooping in to save the day. David Drayton (Thomas Jane) will not be eaten by Lovecraftian monsters after all, and the world will presumably go back to normal pretty soon. The only problem is that he just shot his child and the other survivors in his car. For the rest of his life, David will have to deal with the fact that his eight-year-old son would've been perfectly fine if he'd just waited a few more minutes.
It's a gut punch of an ending — one that shocks you to the core the first time around and makes rewatches nearly unbearable. As you watch that final scene again,...

After 15 years, "The Mist" remains one of the most memorable horror films of all time, largely due to the infamous ending that strays away from Stephen King's original novella. In honor of the film's anniversary, /Film's Eric Vespe spent months tracking down as many members of the cast and crew of the film as possible, to present "'The Mist' At 15: An Oral History Of Frank Darabont's Gut-Wrenching Stephen King Adaptation."
As is to be expected, there's a lot of talk about the film's harrowing ending, including the fact that director Frank Darabont turned down the opportunity of doubling his budget if he were to change the ending to something a little less devastating. Luckily, Darabont stuck to his guns, and "The Mist" continues to be a film horror fans can't stop talking about after all these years. However, the budget chop from 40 million to 18 million meant...

In 2010, Melissa McBride joined the cast of the recently-concluded zombie series, "The Walking Dead," developed and executive-produced by Frank Darabont. The post-apocalyptic show went on to be one of the most popular and financially successful TV series in history, and even inspired a spin-off series starring McBride and co-star Norman Reedus where the two would reprise their roles as Carol Peletier and Daryl Dixon.
A few months back, McBride made the difficult decision to exit the upcoming series, citing her inability to relocate to Europe to shoot the show, which would have taken her away from the home she's built in Atlanta. It seems like a fitting decision for the same woman who made her breakthrough film debut in Darabont's 2007 adaptation of Stephen King's "The Mist," playing a character credited only as "Woman With Kids at Home."

This article contains spoilers for the ending of "The Mist," both the film and the novella.
Across movie history, filmmakers have gone to great lengths to maintain a surprise. Whether it's filming under fake names to throw off would-be scoopers or Marvel keeping the "Hawkeye" villain secret from everyone on the crew, directors don't want people knowing too much. Some directors even shoot multiple endings to make sure their cast don't know what's going to make it to the final cut. When it came time to film "The Mist," director Frank Darabont's 2007 adaptation of a Stephen King novella, some similar ingenuity was required to keep its shocker of an ending under wraps.
The gruesome finale sees Thomas Jane's David Drayton lay waste to his band of fellow survivors, including his own son, to spare them a grizzly fate at the hands of the creatures lurking in the mist.

Some horror movies end with the cathartic survival of the protagonist(s), while others end with a brutal twist of the knife, which haunts you even after the credits roll. The latter is true in the case of the bone-chilling ending of Frank Darabont's "The Mist," an adaptation of Stephen King's novella. Darabont's decision to end "The Mist" on such a hopeless, anguished note for David Drayton (Thomas Jane) is certainly a bold decision, as the difference between lifelong trauma and hopeful survival for the characters hinged on a mere 60-second delay. Had David and the others waited a tiny bit longer, four lives would not be lost in vain, as the army vanguard arrive moments later to rescue the remaining survivors.
The tragedy of David's situation is heightened by the fact that he survives the ordeal and now has to live with the guilt of the deaths,...

It's hard not to love - and be a little jealous - of Nathan Gamble, the star of both Dolphin Tale movies. After all, he gets to swim with dolphins and has forged a real life relationship with Winter, just like his character, Sawyer. In real life, his love of the outdoors and athletics goes beyond the water. Nathan loves to play football and, of course, watch football, too! He's a huge fan of the Seattle Seahawks and considers Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson among his personal heroes. Since Nathan is such a fan of the game, and we are now fully into football season, Nathan counts down his Top 5 Favorite Football Films:

This movie was spectacular. Dolphin Tale 2 is about Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) and a dolphin named Winter, who became best friends in the first movie Dolphin Tale (2011). In DolphinTale 2, Winter isn’t the only dolphin anymore. We get to meet three new dolphins named Pamela, Hope, and Mandy. Oh and don’t forget Rufus, the craziest pelican in the world.
The movie starts off with Sawyer’s friend Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) working with Winter and Pamela at the Clearwater Marine Hospital. Sawyer is helping with the show and is in the water with Winter. And the coolest guest star ever, Bethany Hamilton (as herself), swims with Winter! Hamilton is the real-life surfer girl who lost an arm in a shark attack and inspired the movie Soul Surfer. We chatted with Judd about embracing parental roles in movies, her favorite scenes to shoot, and the Hollywood patriarchy and misogyny she bemoaned so articulately in her unforgettable Daily Beast article. Yet again, she's dead on -- even when talking about the kinds of misogyny experienced in professional settings. "Dolphin Tale 2" opens wide today. ...

If I were the one running Warner Bros, I must admit it would not have occurred to me to pursue the idea of a sequel to 2011's "Dolphin Tale". After all, the first film was the story of how a dolphin lost her tail in a crab trap, only to find her way to an aquarium and animal rescue facility in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she was eventually fitted with an innovative prosthetic. Story told, right? The sequel answers that question with a resounding no, and in doing so, it serves to highlight just how difficult it is for people, even with the best of intentions, to keep these animals in captivity and in good health at the same time. In its own small way, the film is part of the same conversation as "Blackfish," making the case that it's important work, but under carefully controlled circumstances only, and never...

Not every film has to be The Lego Movie or Frozen. Sometimes it’s okay for a children’s film to be limited in aim and scope. Over the years, we’ve gotten so used to outfits like Pixar and Disney wowing us with ostensible kiddie fare that blows up into something greater — turning cute fables into dazzling metaphors, lending cosmic significance to stories about magic toys, or robots, or whatever — that a movie of modest ambitions seems like a letdown. Dolphin Tale 2, Lord knows, won’t rearrange anyone’s notion of childhood; you could probably recite most of the movie without having seen it. But there’s room in the cinematic universe for all of these films, and this one is appropriately heartwarming, a well-crafted family flick that gets the job done, then gets out of the way. The first Dolphin Tale recounted the friendship that developed between...

Chicago – They don’t come along often, the rare fun-for-the-whole-family film. But “Dolphin Tale 2” fits that description perfectly, throws in some idealistic symbolism, and more importantly follows those symbols through to the end.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Yes, this is “inspired by a true story,” yet it’s not too far off from the real circumstances – it’s simply a hyper-realized version of the story. The dolphin named Winter, as we learned from the first film, was found in a net with its tail cut off. The Marine Biology institute nursed it back to health, and created a prosthetic appendage – much like a artificial limb for humans – so Winter could frolic anew. “Dolphin Tale 2” is a continuation of this inspiration, and writer/director Charles Martin Smith imbues the story with symbols of transition, for both the dolphins and human beings. This follows through to a glorious conclusion, uplifting and amazingly probable.

The entire cast of Dolphin Tale is back for the sequel to continue the inspiring story of Winter, whose miraculous rescue and recovery—thanks to that prosthetic tail—made her a symbol of hope and perseverance to people around the world. Kids who haven’t been exposed to too many cinematic clichés may be satisfied with more heart-tugging mix of family drama and playful dolphin-human bonding, but any adult watching Dolphin Tale 2 should be able to predict the bland story’s events before the tide ever changes. As with most unnecessary sequels, Dolphin Tale 2 takes a similar plot and spreads it thin. It’s been three years since young Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick, Jr.), rescued Winter, the unfortunate dolphin with the mangled tail. With the help of a unique prosthetic they were able to save her life.

Chicago – When sequels are made, they are rarely better than the original and often have different cast members. “Dolphin Tale 2” defies both of those conventions, and the returning cast delivers the goods – including Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., and the teenage actors Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff.

Let's face it. Of all the kid actors getting really cool experiences, Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Nathan Gamble have it the best as the stars of the Dolphin Tale movies. They get to spend their day swimming with and playing with real dolphins.
Cozi says the first movie is really about the relationship between Sawyer (Gamble) and Winter, the real-life dolphin who gets a prosthetic tail, but in Dolpin Tale 2, her character Hazel gets to care for Hope, a baby dolphin!
In the interview below, shot at Fanlala.com studios, Cozi talks about the movie and what we don't realize about our pets...and she also shares baby Hope's favorite game!

For a relatively small documentary, “Blackfish” has made huge ripples. Gabriela Cowperthwaite's 2013 exposé of Sea World's inhumane conditions for killer whales and occupational perils for trainers has kept animal cruelty in the headlines, if only because the marine amusement park's stock has nosedived since the film's premiere. Though writer-director Charles Martin Smith's script for “Dolphin Tale 2” was probably completed before the release of “Blackfish,” it's impossible not to see this sequel to the 2011 schmaltz-fest as belonging to the post-“Blackfish” era. The original “Dolphin Tale” hinged on a near-mystical connection between wayward teen Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) and Winter,...

Everyone under of the age of sixteen is required by law to love dolphins. Okay, I'm clearly lying here, but it makes a whole lot of sense that Dolphin Tale was successful enough to warrant a sequel. People love dolphins.
In Dolphin Tale, a bottle nosed dolphin named Winter was rescued by a young boy (Nathan Gamble, The Dark Knight) and the Clearwater Marine Hospital after she lost her tail to a crab trap. In its sequel, Winter, now content and healthy with a prosthetic tail, and Sawyer (Gamble) have grown up, but in no way have grown apart. They're as close as ever, as Sawyer and his best friend Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) have joined the staff of the Clearwater Marine Hospital, which is run by Hazel's father, Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick, Jr., Independence Day). Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd show up and help out when they can.

Over at Fanlala studios, Nathan Gamble stopped by to talk about his time on the set of Dolphin Tale 2. And it turns out that more went into making the movie than we ever could have imagined!
In the interview, Nathan talks about shrinking Winter. Yep, you read that right. The effects team actually had to digitally shrink the dolphin, because she's grown so much since the first movie!
Nathan also talks about his character and what changes and additions are coming to the sequel. Make sure you check out Dolphin Tale 2 when it heads to theaters on September 12 - we can't wait!

Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, Mila Kunis, James Franco and Morgan Freeman can all draw crowds but their latest films are not being released in cinemas in Australia.
Distributors say there are multiple factors which compel them to send films straight to DVD and VoD, not least when titles bomb in the Us.
But the slashing of pay TV license fees for movies, rising marketing costs, the continued decline of the DVD market, the mainstream programming of chains such as Dendy and the proliferation of festivals and alternate content in cinemas are pushing many small to medium-size films out of cinemas.
Distributors calculate that it costs a minimum of $1.3 million to market a broad theatrical release, which means it will need to gross $4.5 million to break-even. Any less and the distributor loses money.
