Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

How different would Scarface be if Tony Montana had a lust for blood instead of coke? Or, what if a clan of vampires made their own crime family? Wouldn’t that be an awesome movie? Vampires and gangsters seem like a perfect match. They both enjoy secrecy, violence and power. How hard would it be to mix some blood and money into that equation? Maybe a little harder than you might think…

The teaser art for the next zombie themed epic coming out of the UK, Black and Blue Films' Devil's Playground, has come our way; and it's void of floating heads, pensive looking teens, and all the rest of the cliché horseshit we're spoon-fed here in the States.
Devil's Playground stars Craig Fairbrass as Cole, a hardened killer searching for a cure to the illness causing a zombie apocalypse across the globe that is also slowly turning him into one. Danny Dyer, Colin Salmon, Sean Pertwee, Lisa McAllister, Alistair Petrie, Jaime Murray, Shane Taylor, Craig Conway, MyAnna Buring, and Del Henney, whom you may remember as one of the villains in Straw Dogs, all co-star. Mark McQueen is in the director's chair.

When talking about British Film there are certain, unavoidable, assumptions one automatically makes. Those crisply enunciated words have long conjured pictures of rolling hills, heaving bosoms, mad Kings and foppish fools. An entire industry has been built upon the ever changing hair of Mr Hugh Grant and Jane Austen’s back catalogue has been taken advantage of in the parlour time and time again.
It is a world apart from those reliable old exports that we may find the Britain of gangster flicks. They populate a straight-to-dvd nether world which has scant regard for global recognition. These are not slick Ritchie flicks, attracting Hollywood stars to a middle-class vision of roughing it. These are honest to goodness, behind the scenes at the terraces, unflinching looks at a crude life of crime. Just in time for its debut at the Film4 FrightFest we've gotten our hands on a couple of more stills and even the DVD cover art for Dead Cert!
After premiering at London Film4 FrightFest (August 26-30), Dead Cert will be released on DVD in UK by Momentum Pictures on September 27th. Special Features include an audio commentary, and a making-of featurette.
Producer Jonathan Sothcott says of star Billy Murray (pictured below), "“Billy Murray has the same qualities as an actor that DeNiro and Nicholson do – he can be utterly charming and utterly terrifying – and he can turn either on at will. He’s an actor whose brilliant TV work kept him away from film audiences in the last decade but his performances in recent movies like Rise of the Footsoldier, Freight and now Dead Cert are utterly compelling – an incredibly accomplished, stylish film actor at the top of his game.

Now here's a British horror I'm looking forward to this year. It's none other than 'Devil's Playground', the new Brit zombie flick starring mockney actor Danny Dyer ('Severance', 'Doghouse') alongside Jaime Murray ('Hustle', 'Dexter'), MyAnna Buring ('The Descent', 'Lesbian Vampire Killers'), Lisa McAllister ('Dead Cert'), Shane Taylor, Craig Fairbrass ('White Noise 2: The Light'), Colin Salmon ('Resident Evil') and Sean Pertwee ('Dog Soldiers'). A batch of new stills have arrived courtesy of Dread Central and you can check them out below, including the trailer! And you can also check out the sexy twosome Murray and Buring below. So what makes this any different from zombie flicks of yesteryear? Well the most intriguing ingredient of all is that they have opted to use a gang of free runners to...

Now here's a flick about vampires we can really get behind! That's right, kids, you won't be finding any sparkling teenage brooders in Steven Lawson's UK vampire import Dead Cert, and we've got some new artwork and stills to prove it!
Starring Craig Fairbrass and Billy Murray, director Steve Lawson's Dead Cert follows a gang of tough London gangsters who get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met.
"One of the things I strove to give this movie is a sense of history, of vampire lore," says writer/producer Jonathan Sothcott. "In a lot of ways this is a super-modern version of Dracula, which is a pretty big undertaking given that...

Dead Cert is the latest movie from Raw Productions, the company behind the upcoming film industry mockumentary Just for the Record starring Rik Mayall, Danny Dyer, Craig Fairbrass and Sean Pertwee due for release in May. Dead Cert is gangster/vampire action horror, with Craig Fairbrass, Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher and Steven Berkoff. The official synopsis reads:
Freddy Frankham thought he’d left the world of organised crime behind. But on the eve of the opening of his new venture, an upmarket gentlemen’s club called Paradise, Freddy finds himself drawn back into a life he’d rather leave in the past.
With an all-star cast that includes Craig Fairbrass, Billy Murray, Dexter Fletcher, Jason Flemyng, Andrew Tiernan, Janet Montgomery, Roland Manookian, Ciaran Griffiths, Lisa McAllister and Steven Berkoff, Dead Cert is a gangster film with a difference, and a roaring, rampaging antidote to the limp, romanticised vampires of modern horror films.

You could have heard a body drop when news reached the Filmshaft office that Dagenham was hosting a cauldron of gangster violence, sexual deviance and the supernatural. “What’s the story there? Why don’t we go the whole hog and report on the f—king local buses?” was just one response but when Filmshaft informed Ed Whitfield that there were vampires and free sandwiches involved, his mood changed. “I suppose I could go and take a look…”
It’s a freezing cold November morning in Dagenham, East London and I’m lost in a labyrinthine maze of industrial hangers and silver gilded fences. “Where the f—k am I?” is my question to a stray dog and I reach for the I-phone map app. This technological marvel, coded by a bastard evidently, tells me that my destination is the other side of an imposing 12 foot wall of perforated corrugated sheeting.

The exclusive pics from the UK vampire movie Dead Cert just keep coming; producer Jonathan Sothcott sent over some more, which you can check out below. He also gave us a few words and the first poster for another upcoming project: a remake of the 1972 cult chiller The Asphyx.
“We are just going into our fourth week of production on Dead Cert, and are now based in a studio in Essex,” Sothcott tells Fango. “Next week we start all the wirework for the mother of all vampire battles. Our gang of vamps looks amazing—Billy Murray as Dante has this amazing, dangerous stillness and so much dignity. Dave Legeno [the villain from The Cottage] is an absolute powerhouse, and Andy Tiernan is just hypnotic on screen.”

Producer Jonathan Sothcott sent along an exclusive batch of first photos (see ’em below) from his vampire movie Dead Cert, currently lensing in the UK under the direction of Steven Lawson. “We have been filming on location in East London and Essex since Saturday—tough night shoots, but the shots Steve is getting are amazing,” Sothcott tells us.
Dead Cert, which we last covered here, stars “Craig Fairbrass and Lisa McAllister as Freddie Frankham and Jen Christian, a couple whose world is torn apart by vampires,” Sothcott continues. “Craig and Lisa have an amazing chemistry; they work brilliantly on screen as a couple and are giving powerhouse performances.”
Also starring is veteran actor Steven Berkoff as vampire hunter Kenneth Mason. “Steven is an absolute legend, and I’m thrilled he’s doing the film,” the producer says. “I called him and asked him, and he said yes immediately. We were all amazed and so excited.
