Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Strangers, The Strangers: Prey At Night, and The Strangers: Chapter One.
Nothing sparks fear in the opening moments of a horror film like the words “based on actual events.” Many horror fans find comfort in reminding ourselves that “it’s just a movie,” but this ominous disclaimer smashes the illusion. Bryan Bertino’s landmark home invasion film, The Strangers, begins with a similar assertion, setting the stage for a night of pure terror. Ominous text delivers upsetting statistics of random crime before introducing us to the film’s victims.
Renny Harlin’s 2024 prequel The Strangers: Chapter One begins with a similar warning, but ups the ante by calculating the number of violent crimes that have occurred since the opening frame. It’s the perfect way to introduce stories designed to upend our collective understanding of personal safety.

The episode of The Best of the Bad Guys focuses on the trio of killers from The Strangers. It is written, narrated, and edited by Mike Holtz.
Welcome to The Best of The Bad Guys! Where we rank the best of cinema’s worst villains. From their best kill to their best jump scares and even their French kissing abilities. What? Today, we’re talking about The Strangers. A trio of mysterious and sadistic murderers who like to show up in remote locations, toy with, piss off, and eventually murder human beings for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Now, at the time of this writing, there are only two films worth of Stranger’s awful antics, but there’s an entire trilogy on the way, starting with Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter One this May. Would you like to go lay by the bay? Perhaps eat some hay? The original...

Welcome back to Millwood High, where the head of the class is most likely to be a decapitated one and a new threat is putting the “A” in slay. Season 2 of Max’s Pretty Little Liars reboot has returned with a pair of episodes that delivered a minor time jump and a major twist that set the stage for a Summer School session saluting horror sequels that deserve their flowers. Max “You know what, we do think about these seasons as horror movies, and so for us, Season 2 was really Part 2 of a horror movie,” agrees Lisa Calhoon Bring, who co-created the series with Riverdale guru Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. (Watch the full video interview above.) On the heels of their scary, sexy, and so-worthy “Original Sin” extension of ABC Family’s late, great Pll, the duo spent their time between seasons rewatching” Part 2 of every horror movie,” she continues, ultimately deciding...

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is now in session, but there’s one teacher you shouldn’t expect to see roaming the halls — Ezra Fitz.
The Max reboot’s first season ended with Imogen (Bailee Madison) revealing that her baby was being adopted by a lovely couple from nearby Rosewood, specifically Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra (Ian Harding) from the original Pretty Little Liars. It was an exciting Easter egg for longtime fans of the franchise, one that promised a permanent connection between the two shows.

Summer school begins early this year.
No, you won’t be challenged with tests or catching and marking grasshoppers, but you will feel forced to sit through class nonetheless when the next generation of Pretty Little Liars returns with their own type of Summer School.
This season discusses the classic movie trope with which Pretty Little Liars has become synonymous — the final girl.
TV Fanatic had the opportunity to get in front of the cast and creators for a little Q&a, and they did the best they could to entertain and tease without spoiling too much — just as we like it.
We first spoke to the group that not only has answers but who makes the decisions. Creators Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring were joined by Pll mom Sharon Leal.

When I previously wrote my review of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, I mentioned that I was optimistic for the series to be renewed for another season, but questioned how the showrunners would be able to introduce a fresh batch of conflicts for our Millwood liars to tackle. After all, “A” had been apprehended! The main characters seemed to have found closure, and the future seemed bright and unobstructed for each of them.
And then came the summer. Summer School, that is.
As expected in any iteration of Pretty Little Liars, a new A has emerged to torment our five final girls who are stuck in Millwood attending summer school; this time in the form of Bloody Rose–a crimson soaked, knife brandishing antagonist that I would argue is much scarier than our season 1 stalker, Archie Waters. As things heat up with Bloody Rose, the summer brings a slew of...

It was announced two weeks ago that Paramount is resurrecting the Scary Movie spoof franchise with a brand new reboot movie, which will likely arrive in theaters next year.
The new movie, a joint venture between Paramount and Miramax that will technically be the sixth installment in the franchise, is expected to go into production this coming Fall.
We don’t yet know who will be writing, directing or starring in the Scary Movie reboot, but two actors in particular have already expressed an interest in joining the franchise.
The first is Melissa Barrera, who can currently be seen in theaters in Radio Silence’s bloody horror movie Abigail. Barrera is of course also the star of Scream and Scream VI, which kind of makes her a perfect candidate to lampoon herself in a Scary Movie reboot.
“I always loved those movies,” Melissa Barrera tells the website Inverse. “When I saw it announced,...

The television franchise that began with Pretty Little Liars on Freeform (starting back when the channel was known as ABC Family) and continued with two short-lived spin-offs on Freeform – Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists – moved over to the Max streaming service in 2022 with a new series called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which leaned further into horror territory. A second season of the new series, now titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, is set to reach Max sometime in spring 2024, and now Cosmopolitan has unveiled a batch of images from the season (including a shot of a masked slasher) that the creators say was inspired by classic sequels Friday the 13th Part 2, Halloween II, and Scream 2!

What do you do when they come for you? Beloved horror franchise “The Strangers” is getting a revamp, courtesy of prequel “The Strangers: Chapter 1” starring “Riverdale” alum Madelaine Petsch. Two more sequels are due later this year, all from “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” director Renny Harlin.
In this first film, Petsch stars as a young woman who is trying to start a new life with her fiancé. Yet, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, the couple become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath co-star.
Sure, it may sound like a run-of-the-mill slasher, but “The Strangers” franchise has a haunting allure, thanks to its creation by filmmaker Bryan Bertino. The director has a “story by” credit for “Chapter 1,” which is helmed by Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

Lock your doors, because Lionsgate has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” set to release on May 17.
The third film in “The Strangers” franchise, which originated with Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film, stars Madelaine Petsch as a woman moving to the Pacific Northwest to start anew with her fiancé (Froy Gutierrez). Their plans go askew when they stay at an AirBnB in Oregon, where they are subject to the torment of three masked strangers that show up at their door.
Other cast members include Rachel Shenton, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, Richard Brake and Ella Bruccoleri.
“Chapter One” is the first film in a new trilogy directed by Renny Harlin, who has previously helmed “Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” among other projects.
The original “Strangers” starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as the targets of masked killers who break into their home.

Exclusive: Mallory Bechtel (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin) has landed a role opposite Paul Mescal, Ben Platt and Beanie Feldstein in Richard Linklater’s feature adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along, the classic musical from Stephen Sondheim and George Furth.
Details as to her role haven’t been disclosed.
Merrily follows Franklin Shepard, who after establishing himself as a talented composer of Broadway musicals, abandons his friends and songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood movies. As another year of horror ends, we reflect on the best this genre had to offer. Usually, that means focusing on those movies that drew the most attention. However, there are also those movies that slipped under everyone’s radars for whatever reason, ultimately causing them to be overlooked. So the objective here is to bring more attention to these releases as horror fans play catch-up.
Like last year, 2023 was a strong year for horror. And these ten hidden gems might have escaped notice at the time, but it’s never too late to discover them now.

Iconic scaremaker R.L. Stine has been terrorizing kids and teens for over three decades. The mere mention of the author’s name readily brings up memories of Goosebumps and Fear Street. Yet, it was his two short-story collections, The Haunting Hour and Nightmare Hour, that inspired one of the best horror TV shows for young people.
The beginnings of The Haunting Hour can be traced back to a 2007 straight-to-video movie called Don’t Think About It, which then aired on Cartoon Network. Despite its title and Stine’s writing credit, though, the movie’s script wasn’t based on anything from its literary namesake. In fact, this was an original story penned by creative partners Dan Angel and Billy Brown. One of the production companies behind Don’t Think About It, The Hatchery, then revived the Haunting Hour brand a few years later once its co-founder and the movie’s executive producer,...

Production on Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is officially underway, and there will be a major throwback to the original series.
HBO Max confirmed Friday that Annabeth Gish would be returning as Dr. Sullivan for the second chapter of the reboot series.
If you watch Pretty Little Liars online, you know fans had theories about the doctor on multiple occasions throughout the original Freeform series.
Thankfully, Dr. Sullivan was just doing her job and attempted to help the liars process their trauma.
Given that Gish is playing the same character here, it should be more of the same.
On Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Season 1, we were introduced to six new liars who were caught up in a deadly game with A.
Bailee Madison played Imogen Adams, Chandler Kinney as Tabby Haworthe, Zaria as Faran Bryant, Malia Pyles as Minnie "Mouse" Honrada, Maia Reficco as Noa Olivar, and Mallory Bechtel as Kelly Beasley.

A familiar face is returning for Season 2 of Max’s Pretty Little Liars reboot. Original Pll cast member Annabeth Gish will reprise her role as Dr. Sullivan in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School.
Gish recurred as the character in the original Pretty Little Liars series, which aired for six seasons on Freeform.
Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, the new series debuted five years after the original Pretty Little Liars series ended, focusing on new characters in the new fictional town of Millwood, Pa and with multiple references to iconic horror movies (think Carrie and the original Halloween).
Season 1 picked up 20 years after a series of tragic events almost ripped the blue-collar town of Millwood apart. Now, in present day, a disparate group of teen girls — a brand-new set of Little Liars — find themselves tormented by an unknown Assailant and made to pay for the secret sin committed...
