In this episodeSchool of Rock'sJay Gill and Wagner Professor Alan Smith share their insights of beingon the fronts lines with a Broadway ensemble member. Being a dresser is so much more than the wardrobe. Its about personality navigation, people-skills, knowing that connections go a long way, and that life and ensembles are best when they are a mix of people. Whether dealing with giraffe heads or ball gowns, cowboy boots orspike heels, at the end of the day, a simple thank you can be priceless.

As someone who hasn’t played EA’s FIFA franchise regularly for nearly a decade, FIFA 16 makes me feel like the series has taken several long strides forward over the last 10 years. From a graphical standpoint the game is a sight to behold, as both players and arenas look fantastic. The game offers a good amount of different ways to play, via its assortment of game modes. Sound and presentation have also taken steps forward, which help in creating a very realistic simulation of the beautiful game, but as a player returning to the franchise after a long hiatus, the most notable and appreciated improvement would have to be the sheer amount of control the player has over the ball.

Whether you call it soccer, football or the beautiful game, the world’s favourite sport is once again in the limelight with the anticipated release of EA Sports’ FIFA 16. It’s a title that sends many into a frenzy, and keeps folks glued to their televisions throughout the world, making it no surprise that the series is quickly approaching its twenty-fifth year of existence.
Following an off year, where the game that was released felt familiar and far too safe for its own good, FIFA 16 comes to us with the promise of gameplay enhancements and new ways to play. Looking to fix the wrongs of yesteryear, it hopes to reclaim the throne that it once felt like it owned. Goodbye complacency.
From the get-go, things feel different. Not in a bad way, either, unless you’re someone who doesn’t particularly like faster paced soccer. FIFA 16 has all of the...

Steve McClaren’s appointment as Newcastle United boss in June was supposed to herald a complete break from the previous regime.
No more Steve Stone. No more John Carver. And no more Alan Pardew.
Things at St James’ Park were to work differently and the club would be completely rebuilt from within. And McClaren has now revealed that it is arguably his predecessor’s biggest mistake at St James’ Park that he is determined to rectify as soon as possible: the lack of leadership at Newcastle.

Fabricio Coloccini’s Toon future is unclear and there has been much debate about who exactly the Argentine would hand the Nufc captain’s armband over to should he reunite with Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace.

Normally, the war for interactive soccer supremacy begins in chilly September, shortly after the kids have all gone back to school. That isn’t the case this year, though, because Konami has chosen to hold Pro Evolution Soccer 15 until November. EA Sports, on the other hand, has gone ahead and released the latest iteration of its venerable FIFA franchise, allowing those with an itch for footie to take the pitch in FIFA 15. Whether or not it will end up being this season’s best interactive version of the sport remains to be seen, but there’s no denying that it’s another very solid and well-made outing.

Arsene Wenger loves a last minute business deal. Unfortunately last time out the results of that obsession were the limping shape of Kim Kallstrom, but there has been better fruit in the past, and there probably will be in the future.
This time out the manager’s hand has been forced, as the injury to Olivier Giroud has meant that he has had to go into the market for a striker at the last minute, rather than face a season of watching Yaya Sanogo try and convince everyone he’s any good.
In light of deadline day developments, there’s been a lot of betting activity on potential strikers coming in to the Emirates, and the latest news is that Sky Bet have had a flourish of activity on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar joining Arsenal.

Sometime in the summer of 2007, Sam Allardyce sat around a big mahogany table and looked at a list of names. On it were such footballing luminaries as Claudio Cacapa, David Rozenhal, Geremi, Mark Viduka, and the artist formerly known as Alan Smith. Seeing the clock was ticking well past 8pm, and deciding that he’d be damned rather than miss another episode of Emmerdale, he puffed out his cheeks, scrumpled the list and tossed it in the bin, and text his assistant the message “yeah, all of them. Whatever”.
A week later nine new bodies arrived, and Newcastle United have spent the seven since years adopting a more stringent “one in/one out” policy than a nightclub with no fire exit.
In a shocking turn of events however, and as further proof that 2014 is pretty much the best summer ever, Newcastle have actually started buying players again.

Each time a new edition of EA Sports’ FIFA franchise hits the shelves, there’s always a handful of players who inexplicably run rings around the opposition in-game. Forget Messi and Ronaldo, the most effective yet affordable players are often discreetly buried amongst the tens of thousands of players in the game database.
It would seem that according to the development team behind the FIFA series, a lacklustre season in real life doesn’t always transpire to a player’s ability on the virtual football pitch. Long-term fans of football simulation games will be all too familiar with previous examples of unproven or frankly average players stealing the show from the supposed best players in the world; remember Alan Smith in Pro Evolution Soccer 5?

To many, soccer is life, to the point where it’s become much more than a sport. It’s a fun-filled past-time, a way to bring people together and an escape from poverty in places such as Africa. Without it, our world would be a darker and less jovial place, and none of us want that. Thankfully, we have the sport and its peers, because they make our lives a lot better.
Every fall, EA Sports releases a brand new version of its ever popular FIFA soccer franchise. This year’s iteration, dubbed FIFA 14 for obvious reasons, just recently hit physical and digital shelves, offering footie fanatics a chance to interact with their favourite stars through competitive means. Although it’s yet another annual outing and will receive flak for that reason, the game is a fantastic representation of its inspiration, and could easily be the best soccer game released thus far.

The early kick-off this Super Sunday sees the Manchester rivals locking horns once more in this top of the table clash at the Etihad, with neither City nor United content with settling for a draw. The atmosphere is bound to be typically colourful, and neutral fans could well be in for a treat as the two sides look to get the better of each other with strong attacking performances.
As if the game needed more ignition, former United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke to Football Focus to call City United’s “little brother,” following on from Sir Alex’s infamous comments about their being “noisy neighbours.” Their European record might still be terrible in comparison to United’s bulging silverware cupboard, but City emerged triumphant in the Premier league last season, and though they currently sit second and three points behind United, the pressure remains on Sir Alex to quieten Roberto Mancini’s team.

With Newcastle United’s pre-season campaign finally confirmed (at least in part) after a summer of procrastinating and unnecessary delays, Alan Pardew will soon find out exactly what holes he needs to plug in his current squad, and where the opportunities lies for development after last season’s exceptional fifth place finish.
The manager who picked up three prestigious management awards last term has already moved on first-teamers like Danny Guthrie and Leon Best, and fringe players like Alan Smith, Peter Lovenkrands and Fraser Forster, and brought in French attacking midfielder Romain Amalfitano and highly rated former Coventry Burundi midfielder Gael Bigirimana. But the squad, which was already a little light last season, is now three players down, albeit with the return of Steven Taylor and Sylvain Marveaux from long-term injuries, and with European competition bringing far more fixtures, reinforcements must be brought in.

Newcastle United’s 2011/12 season was one of hugely exceeded expectations, tactical nous and some incredibly well considered signings, and with this summer already bringing rumours and news of several new signings, what was a relatively thin squad last year should be bolstered by some new arrivals ahead of the home game against Tottenham in August.
But if Newcastle manager Alan Pardew wants to build on last year’s successes and make a concentrated effort to overcome the next step and qualifying for the Champions League, he will need to sort out some of the lesser players in the squad, and make way for more new faces. The days of bloated squads sitting on contracts and not offering anything to the first team are gone at St James Park, thanks to the frugal business model of owner Mike Ashley, and there will be more outgoing deals than those which have already seen Peter Lovenkrands,...

Newcastle United and Everton are prepared to challenge Liverpool for the signature of Atletico Madrid midfielder Raul Garcia, according to a report in The Daily Mirror.
Last week Liverpool had been linked with a £6.5 million move for the 25-year-old central midfielder who impressed last season on loan at Osasuna, where he contributed 11 goals. He had fallen out of favour with his Atletico boss Diego Simeone which led to his loan move last summer and now he is willing to let the player go for a cut price move, five years after the club made £9 million for the Spanish under 21 international.

West Brom’s want-away midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has held talks with Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur about a potential summer move, according to the player himself.
He told Mercato 365;
“We have already started talking to teams like Newcastle and Tottenham. For now, I’m leaving it all in the hands of my agent and I hope to have good surprises on my return from vacation.”
The news comes barely two weeks since the player hinted on Twitter that he was looking for pastures new when he cryptically tweeted;
“Chelsea, Liverpool or Newcastle next season”
Mulumbu was named West Brom’s player of the season last year and is currently tied to the club until 2015 after signing for the club in 2009 for a fee of just £175,000 after a successful loan spell. However after becoming the Baggies star midfielder it would now take a big offer for the Midlands club to part with their midfielder.

Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United go into today’s 3pm Premier League kick-off at Fulham perhaps on their biggest confidence run of the season. They are on the backs of three straight wins, a thrashing of Manchester United a home, a last gasp winner to progress in the Fa Cup against Blackburn and a 1-0 home win last week against Queens Park Rangers. They are up to sixth in the league, only behind fifth place Arsenal by two goals difference and one point ahead of Liverpool.
Although nobody is seriously talking Champions League at Newcastle, they are today at least within touching distance of fourth place and have just secured a huge £10 million move for Demba Ba’s international team mate Papiss Demba Cisse, a goal machine. And if...

Transfer windows invariably represent a tumultuous time for Newcastle United fans. The past two have seen the departures of high-profile talents like Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton, and while acquisitions like Cheick Tiote, Yohan Cabaye and Demba Ba have turned out to be masterstrokes, the general consensus at St James Park (will never knowingly be referred to as anything else on this site) is that everything and everyone has a price tag.
Frugality and an eye on the forthcoming financial fair play rules are one thing – and something that the business model should probably be praised for in the long run – but talent retention is the only way to on-pitch success, and long-term stability in the core of the team is the only way to succeed in the long-term. Winner of the best short film Oscar in 2009 for Toyland, Jochen Alexander Freydank is currently prepping his first feature length project. According to THR, Freydank will adapt the rom-com best-seller Macho Man for Walt Disney Germany.
The film will be based off of Moritz Netenjakob‘s novel of the same name, which tells the story of a sensitive German man who attempts to be macho in order to land a sexy Turkish girl. Friedrich Mücke (Friendship!) will star alongside Pegah Ferydoni (Turkish For Beginners). The Experiment‘s Marc Conrad will produce under his ConradFilm banner with Klaus Dohle of Erfttalfilm.
Freydank isn’t the only recent award-winning short director with the opportunity to make his way into the world of feature lengths. We reported just a few weeks ago that Fox has hired Jesus Orellana to direct the feature length adaptation of his own sci-fi short Rosa, after it went viral back in November.

Newcastle United midfielder Danny Guthrie has been ruled out for a month through injury. Manager Alan Pardew revealed the news at today’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s Premier League away fixture to Norwich.
As recently as last season mostly a forgotten man at the club, Guthrie came into the side after the injury of Cheick Tiote and has put in several stellar performances in recent weeks in the center of midfield and his loss for the Christmas period will be a big one for the club. With Tiote also missing out on the game against Norwich, Pardew says either Dan Gosling or youngster Mehdi Abeid will come into the side to replace him. Veteran Alan Smith seemingly is still way beyond contention.

When Newcastle United took on Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League a month ago at St James’ Park and beat them comfortably 3-1, the North East club must have felt like they were in a different league to their opponents. Rovers were completley outclassed that day and if Newcastle had shown more composure in front of goal, could have won by several more. United currently lie joint third in the league, a whopping 14 points ahead of bottom placed Blackburn but the Carling Cup is always a great equaliser, and Newcastle will know that all too well having needed extra time to beat both Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe in previous rounds, who actually are in different leagues.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew appeared on BBC Radio Newcastle on Thursday and talked up today’s Premier League game against Wigan as one of the biggest of the season as he knows at home this is three points they should take if they really want to be challenging for a European birth this term as their results so far would suggest. He obviously meant it as no disrespect to Wigan who lie 19th in the table but more in terms of consistency of results against sides outside of the top six or seven in the table at home, something they didn’t always manage last term. Their 2-2 draw thanks to a late flurry of goals against their opponents today in the same fixture last season is a testimony to that.

This year’s version includes two upgrades – one on offense and one on defense – that make the game even more-realistic and fun to play. So-called “tactical defending,” alone, changes FIFA in an amazing way, and the counter to that,...

Having ended a run of five Blackburn victories in a row at St James’ Park, Alan Pardew’s Newcastle go into today’s 3pm Premier League tie against Mick McCarthy’s Wolves at Molineux hoping to put an end to another unwanted hoodoo. Newcastle haven’t won on this ground since September 1958 (15 top flight attempts) and more often that not have found the Molineux a tough ground to take anything away from.
In last seasons 1-1 draw, Newcastle had to survive a barrage of military style assault challenges from the likes of Karl Henry (mostly aimed at his enemy Joey Barton!) to make it out alive after 90 minutes, let alone with any points but with the Scouser now enjoying life in London, perhaps we could be in something of a quieter affair this afternoon.

But this season’s game compared to the one last year on this ground when Chris Hughton was in charge is significantly different in that 1) Joey Barton has left, and he completely overshadowed the game with his disruptive and illegal antics that saw him post-match banned via video evidence and 2) former manager Sam Allardyce has left the club, and his tactics forever haunted Newcastle, even when he was our own manager.
And there is a 3) Newcastle are more...

Having fielded a strong, almost full strength 11 against League One side Scunthorpe last time out, the early word is Toon boss Alan Pardew may rest the majority of his players for tonight’s game against tricky Championship outfit Nottingham Forest in the third round of the League cup. Why not an 11 full of first team players again? Well perhaps because we are a few further weeks into the season and more players are showing sides of tiredness or maybe it’s simply because tonight’s game is not in front of thousands watching at home on their googlebox and the embarrassment of going out against lower opposition will be much less severe given that it isn’t being screened anywhere!
Word in the North East is that Pardew will...

As another football season kicks off, along with it comes the demo of the latest outing of the best football game on the planet. FIFA 12 has the rather unenviable task of improving upon damn-near perfection in FIFA 11. Having played the undeniably brilliant demo, I can’t help but feel that it lacks a single outstanding factor that makes it stand above its predecessor, apart from the obligatory team updates.
The main improvement that I noticed playing the demo of FIFA 12 was that the players no longer look like evil life-size mannequins. The cold, glazed eyes and overly glossy skin texture have been replaced by a pleasingly naturalistic look that make the whole game quite literally feel more alive.
EA Sports have themselves admitted that most of the changes to this version have been ‘under the hood’. Features such as ‘Pro Player Intelligence,’ in which the players on the pitch have...

All eyes will be on the outspoken and always controversial Joey Barton tonight as he makes his Queens Park Rangers debut against his former club Newcastle United, the team he publicly claimed he loved and never wanted to leave, in what is being setup to be a fiery Premier League contest screened live tonight on Sky Sports Monday Night Football at 8pm.
As ever, we can expect Joey Barton to take centre stage and it will be interesting to hear what kind of reaction the Newcastle supporters give the twitter philosopher. The midfield terrier, despite his inconsistent performances throughout his tenure in the North East, was much loved by the Toon fans for his spirited attitude on the pitch and their natural tendency will be to give him some kind of reaction, either cheering or booing and heckling relentlessly,...

With Mike Williamson ruled out through injury for around six weeks, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has no cover for his centre half’s Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini and because of that, is making a late bid for a new defender.
Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell is the man in question, with Newcastle having a last minute bid accepted by the midlands club. Ridgewell is no doubt itching to make his way back to the Premier League, something his colleagues Scott Dann has already done today with a move to Blackburn Rovers and also Cameron Jerome at Stoke – Birmingham aren’t really in an financial position to turn down offers.
Having made the £2 million move from rivals Aston Villa in 2007 (the first player to make a move across the midland divide in 23 years!) Ridgewell has been a consistent heart in the Birmingham defence having appeared 141 times and pitching in with an important 9 goal haul.

The teams have been announced;
Newcastle: Krul, Simpson, Steven Taylor, Coloccini, Ryan Taylor, Lovenkrands, Cabaye, Tiote, Gutierrez, Obertan, Best.
Subs: Soderberg, Smith, Ba, Marveaux, Sammy Ameobi, Vuckic, Ferguson.
Fulham: Schwarzer, Briggs, Hughes, Hangeland, Baird, Dempsey, Murphy, Sidwell, Donegan, Dembele, Kasami.
Subs: Etheridge, Kelly, Johnson, Senderos, Gecov, Etuhu, Frei.
Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire)
So clearly Shola Ameobi wasn’t fit which is a big loss and it’s Best over Ba that gets the nod. Obertan does end up front as support… with Lovenkrands again on the right. Interestingly no defender on the bench, Pardew picking Alan Smith and Shane Ferguson instead and no place at all for Dan Gosling.
Match kicks off at 1pm.
(I am a lifelong Newcastle United supporter so expect my match previews to be heavy slanted towards the Geordies as they are written for the like-minded).

Three years ago after only eight months in charge, the ‘Messiah’ Kevin Keegan who similarly had gained four points in two games against tough competition (a draw away at Man Utd and a win at home to Bolton) resigned from his post as Newcastle United manager shortly after a League Cup victory against Coventry. The reason? Because he felt he had no power over the running of his team.
The club had sold their biggest asset James Milner to Aston Villa from underneath his nose and the management had decided to re-use the cash on two players that Keegan didn’t want bringing to the club – young Spaniard Xisco for £5.7 million (who is inexplicably still on the books and is under-going his third loan spell away from the club as Newcastle struggle to overload him) and Uruguayan midfielder Nacho Gonzalez who played two games before being sent home. Despite the good start to the season,...

FIFA 12's commentary lineup has been revealed by Electronic Arts. Alan Smith will replace Andy Gray as Martin Tyler's co-commentator for this year's footballing entry. The duo will be joined by a second commentary team, Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend, who will call tournament matches for a more authentic real-world broadcast feel. "Alan will bring a fresh, new perspective and insight to FIFA 12, working alongside the trusted and well-known voice of Martin Tyler," said senior producer David Rutter. "As one of the top-tier broadcasters on the UK football scene, he brings enormous knowledge and expert analysis to the game so that we can deliver the most authentic FIFA experience this year." Smith said: "The (more)...

This was a piece of last week's news that we're getting to late - but is worth highlighting. It’s been reprinted 163 times, sold over 100 million copies and translated into over 40 different languages, so it comes as no surprise that, in an era of Hollywood producers scraping the bottom of the barrel for new ideas, a hugely popular book like Khalil Gibran’s masterpiece The Prophet will be adapted for the big screen. Deadline is reporting that Salma Hayek, operating under her Ventanarosa Productions banner, has partnered with Clark Peterson and Ron Senkowski to produce an animated feature based on the book of 26 poetic essays. Hayek’s producing partner, Jose Tamez, will executive produce along with William Nix and co-financing from Steve Hanson. As each essay deals with such differing topics as joy to death and religion to beauty, The Prophet will get produced along the same lines as Fantasia and Paris,...

“And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.”
Well, sorry Kahlil Gibran, but they obviously have plans to direct your The Prophet!
Salma Hayek and her Ventanarosa Productions have teamed up with Clark Peterson and Ron Senkowski to produce an animated feature based on Gibran’s beloved book.
According to the latest reports, the intention is for different directors to helm each chapter, with “an interconnecting theme and a musical through-line.”
And we have quite interesting team on board, or, should we say that these are just expectations from this project at the moment?
“It is well to give when asked but it is better to give unasked, through understanding.”
So, here are filmmakers expected to participate so far: Sylvain Chomet (“The Triplets of Belleville”), Kunio Kato (“Tsumiki no ie”), Oscar-winner Chris Landreth (“Ryan”), Tomm Moore (“The Secret of Kells...

Okay, so another year and now it's the final show of the awards season. I don't know why but I'm not that enthuastic about the Oscars this year. Maybe it was last year's underwhelming show or maybe it's because The Dark Knight isn't nominated this year, probably both, but never-the-less the show is done and I want to put up the post of how the show went. Best Motion Picture Of The Year
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
"Frost/Nixon" (Universal)
"Milk" (Focus Features)
"The Reader" (The Weinstein Company)
Winner: "Slumdog Millionaire" (Fox Searchlight)
Best Picture was a major disappointment. Less said about The Dark Knight - the better. For me, Milk is the most deserving of best picture this year. It's issues are more relevant and more original than all films on the list this year.

Click here for the 2009 Academy Award winners! This year I opted not to break down every category and discuss the merits of each individual nominee. Mostly because it takes a ridiculous amount of time, but also because there doesn’t seem to be as much excitement as in previous years. Maybe it’s the fact that the populist picks of the year (Dark Knight, for example) were snubbed in the major categories and replaced with little seen films like The Reader. Or maybe because many of the categories are foregone conclusions.
Either way, I wanted to post my favorites/predictions and hopefully get some discussion going on what you think will win and why. I’m posting my picks here, but included the full list of nominations below.
Best Picture
Slumdog Millionaire - It’s clearly the favorite going into the ballot counting having swept every major awards ceremony leading up to the Oscars.

On Thursday morning, January 22, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have unveiled to the world their selection of nominees for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Announced by Academy president Sid Ganis and Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the nominations were dominated by "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
Having been shunned away from any kudos at the 66th Golden Globe Awards, the David Fincher's drama has picked up 13 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Taraji P. Henson and Best Leading Actor for Brad Pitt. The movie about a man born in his eighties has landed a Best Original Score nomination for composer Alexandre Desplat, and received seven gongs for technical categories as well.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony, airing live on ABC February 22, 2009. The awards will be handed out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.
