At first, the violence seems limited to news reports. Every time a gangster is gunned down or a car bomb goes off in the streets of Corsica, the local channel flashes footage of the crime scene. So long as the killings are confined to television, it’s easy for 15-year-old Lesia to pretend they’re neither real nor relevant, that the people involved aren’t members of her father’s inner circle. But as “The Kingdom” unfolds, the attacks keep getting closer, slowly infiltrating the film itself, until finally, they’re happening right in front of her face.
Corsica, like nearby Sicily, has a serious problem with organized crime, which escalated dramatically in the 1990s, when “The Kingdom” is set. The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, it’s an unusual island: technically part of France, but too independent-minded to let outsiders manage its affairs. The most notorious unmade Stanley Kubrick project is probably his "Napoleon," a massive biopic that the director infamously researched for years. In 2012, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosted a Kubrick exhibit, and guests were permitted to see Kubrick's filing cabinet where he stored thousands of hand-written notecards, each one detailing a single day in Napoleon Bonaparte's life. Kubrick worked on "Napoleon" in the 1970s, and claimed he wanted Jack Nicholson to play the part. Kubrick wrote a screenplay, secured filming locations in Romania, and was all ready to go. The 1970 film "Waterloo" bombed, however, and the then-recent film version of "War and Peace" threatened to flood the market with too much Napoleon. A lot of Kubrick's "Napoleon" research went into the production of 1975's "Barry Lyndon."
Kubrick's unrealized projects are plentiful. Audiences may also know all about Kubrick's plans to make "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence" near the end of his life,...

There are movies that make you want one thing more than anything else: for whatever's happening on the screen to end as quickly as possible.
Reddit users selected popular movies that made them want just that.
1. Saltburn, 2023
In 2020, Emerald Fennell made her debut with the tragicomedy Promising Young Woman. The movie won her an Academy Award for Original Screenplay and gave endless opportunities to create her next project – Saltburn, a rip-off of The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The structure of the movie begins to fall apart in the middle as Oliver "skillfully" (actually clumsily) begins to work his way to the top. Many viewers positioned the movie as one of the most scandalous of the year – Saltburn undoubtedly shocks with some scenes (we feel sorry for every cemetery worker who's seen it), but seasoned viewers were tired of its extreme predictability.

There is something about the period of the Napoleonic Wars and the personality of Napoleon Bonaparte himself that keeps world-renowned filmmakers returning to the subject. Maybe it's the aesthetics of the early 19th century and the epic battles of the time. Maybe it's the fascination of the life of the great French general and emperor that ambitious filmmakers are drawn to.
Whatever the reason, each of these films either failed commercially or received mixed reviews from critics. Abel Gance's Napoleon, Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace and Waterloo, Peter Weir's Master and Commander, and of course Ridley Scott's recent Napoleon – despite epic scales, a talented cast and crew, and sometimes even a great script, all of the above films failed in one way or another.

Actress Christina Hendricks has tied the knot with cinematographer George Bianchini. The wedding ceremony took place at the historic Napoleon House in New Orleans. The guest list included ‘Mad Men’ creator Matt Weiner, Christian Siriano, Mae Whitman, and Retta, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Hendricks told ‘People’ that both she and Bianchini opted for the Big Easy as their wedding destination due to their shared affection for the city.
“New Orleans is a place that I always loved to go before I met George, and a place that he always loved to go before he met me. And then, when we first started dating or meeting up, because we lived across the country from one another, it was the place in the middle,” she explained.

Released theatrically November 22, 2023, director Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" feature, starring Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”) and Vanessa Kirby (“The Fantastic Four”) earned Oscar nominations for ‘Best Costume Design’, ‘Best Production Design’ and ‘Best Visual Effects’, with Scott now readying his director’s cut, with a streaming runtime of more than four hours:
"...the film is a personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of the addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, 'Josephine'.
"The film also captures Napoleon’s famous battles, his relentless ambition, and astounding strategic mind as a military leader, war visionary and war criminal.”

Napoleon may have lost at Waterloo, but Joaquin Phoenix has lost to Brian Cox. Cox – who has been no stranger to speaking his mind on just about any topic that irks him – has now targeted Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, particularly calling out the lead performance of Joaquin Phoenix. Go on, Brian, give ‘em the “Logan Roy” – you know what we’re talking about!
Speaking at HistFest in London (via The Standard), Brian Cox lashed out at Napoleon, saying it was “Terrible. It’s terrible. A truly terrible performance by Joaquin Phoenix. It really is appalling. I don’t know what he was thinking. I think it’s totally his fault and I don’t think Ridley Scott helps him. I would have played it a lot better than Joaquin Phoenix, I tell you that. During a history-celebrating festival in the United Kingdom, Scottish actor Brian Cox lost his temper and attacked actors, theater critics, and politicians. Napoleon (2023), helmed by Ridley Scott, was the first flick he targeted. The yearly gathering discusses historical events with academics, educators, and prominent people.
Cox first took issue with Joaquin Phoenix’s depiction of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in Scott’s $221 million historical epic. The actor, who played Logan Roy on Succession for four seasons between 2018 and 2023, spoke candidly about his thoughts on Phoenix’s performance at HistFest, calling it “terrible”. Reacting quickly to Cox’s remarks, fans questioned why a great actor would ‘hate’ another great actor.

‘After the Party’ in the U.K.
Channel 4 has acquired U.K. rights to the acclaimed New Zealand drama “After the Party” from Lingo Pictures.
The six-part series, co-created by and starring Robyn Malcolm (“Black Bird”), follows Penny Wilding, a mother, teacher and environmental activist, whose life imploded five years earlier after she accused her husband Phil, played by Peter Mullan, of a sex crime and nobody believed her.
When Penny’s now ex-husband returns to town, her daughter pressures her to let go of her accusations and move on. As her old furies rise to the surface, Penny must decide what’s more important – the truth or rebuilding her relationships with the people around her.
Co-created by Dianne Taylor, “After the Party” was produced by Australia’s Lingo Pictures and Luminous Beast in New Zealand as an original commission for New Zealand’s Tvnz in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.

When director Ridley Scott was promoting his latest—and we might argue funniest—historical epic back in November, the filmmaker spoke with pride about the film addressing Napoleon Bonaparte’s legendary campaign into Egypt. As Scott pointed out to Deadline, no previous film about the Frenchman who plunged Europe into decades of war had also addressed his misadventures in North Africa and the Near East too.
“I saw these wonderful two paintings,” Scott said at the time. “One was of a man sitting on a horse staring at the Sphinx, and it was Napoleon. So I thought I had to have that because no one has done the Egyptian campaign. And the truth [is] they took it over pretty easily.”
He is partially right. Napoleon did indeed conquer Egypt with relative ease in 1798. Keeping the land proved to be another story entirely, one which Scott’s Napoleon glosses over in its...

When a movie claims that it is ‘based on a true story’, oftentimes, the directors prefer that the audience take this notion with a grain of salt. Real life, unfortunately, is rarely as entertaining as movies and adaptations often have to twist events and add plot points to make the story they are trying to tell, into the format of a script. Arcs are added, intentions are given, and depth is carved to make reality fit into the mold of cinema.
However, the question that arises is where does one draw the line?
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon
Ridley Scott’s Napoleon is the perfect example of a film that took creative freedom too far. In its pursuit of telling a good story, it twists the past to a point of no recognition. The change was so drastic that even historians got involved.

The Oscar-nominated artisans from Ridley Scott’s epic Napoleon joined me as part of Apple Original Films’ presentations at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event. Veteran production designer Arthur Max and costume designers Janty Yates and David Crossman talked extensively about what it was like to work with Sir Ridley on the ambitious, large-scale production that saw Joaquin Phoenix play Napoleon Bonaparte and Vanessa Kirby his wife Josephine.
With six major battles, hundreds of extras and several challenging locations this was no walk in the park. But for the 85-year-old Scott it is quite common, and Max and Yates have both been through this drill before. In fact, Yates won an Oscar for her work on Scott’s Oscar Best Picture-winning Gladiator in 2001.
For Max, who had to re-create an entirely different country — the film shot in England and Malta — it was not easy.

Ridley Scott’s two-and-a-half-hour film chronicles the life of the notorious French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte, from his beginnings through his ruthless climb to emperor — viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife Joséphine, played by Vanessa Kirby.

Scott also serves as a producer alongside Mark Huffam and Kevin J. Walsh; co-producers Winston Azzopardi, Raymond Kirk and Janine Modder and executive producer Aidan Elliott.
“Napoleon” received three Oscar nominations for visual effects, production design and costume design.
After hitting theaters in November, the Joaquin Phoenix-led historical epic “Napoleon” will begin streaming on Apple TV+ on March 1.

“Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” in the fantasy production design category at the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “Godzilla Minus One” is the frontrunner to win Best Visual Effects with 17/5 odds at this year’s Oscars. Meanwhile “Napoleon” is in fourth place with 9/2 odds. However there’s a trend with winners in this category that may benefit the latter film.

“Napoleon” costume designers divvied up their tasks, with Janty Yates concentrating on French civilian wear and David Crossman on evolving military outfits.
The Ridley Scott epic follows Napoleon Bonaparte’s (Joaquin Phoenix) rise from general to emperor. Along the way, he meets and falls in love with Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
The recreation of the battle of Austerlitz is a highlight of the movie. For that, Crossman dressed the Russian infantry in green and the Russian cavalry in white. The Hungarian infantry wore various shades of brown, and Napoleon’s army was in blue. Crossman says his goal was to make the looks as varied as possible, so it didn’t fall flat. “A lot of the time, it’s the hats that distinguish,” says Crossman. “We mixed in civilian pieces into the uniform, particularly on the French, because they were the bankrupt army, and they had no money. After strategically withholding Napoleon from the festival circuit, Ridley Scott went guerilla instead, launching his controversial military epic into cinemas like a carefully-thrown hand grenade. The tactic worked, overriding critical reviews that tore apart its history, its script and even its star, Joaquin Phoenix, to give Scott a $200 million worldwide gross. Overlooked in the fallout was a terrific performance by Rupert Everett as the Duke of Wellington, the stiff-upper-lip Brit who proves to be Napoleon’s nemesis at the Battle of Waterloo. Here, the laconic British actor reflects on the influences that fed into his portrayal of the Iron Duke.
Deadline: How did you get involved with the Napoleon project?
Rupert Everett: It just came up out of the blue. I love Ridley Scott, so I was thrilled to take part, really. I’m a fan of the Duke of Wellington too, so it was exciting.
Deadline: What was your take on Wellington?...

Ridley Scott came, he saw, he conquered. The legendary director's "Napoleon" might not be a box office hit in the traditional sense, but it was a generally successful experiment in theatrical releases for Apple. Not only that, it might even prove to be the first of many such releases for the tech giant going forward.
"Napoleon" itself was more of a mixed bag, so far as the theatrical cut is concerned. As Chris Evangelista noted in his review for /Film, the version released in theaters plays like "a CliffsNotes tour through the life of Napoleon Bonaparte," racing through major events in the infamous French emperor and military commander's life at a breakneck speed. As for what it does leave in, well, a lot of it is not only historically inaccurate but -- perhaps more importantly -- it's also just less interesting than what happened in real life.

French President Emmanuel Macron has come out in support of Gérard Depardieu whose star has fallen in France in recent days following the airing of a documentary investigating multiple allegations of sexual assault against the actor.
“One thing you’ll never see me get involved in is a witch hunt. I hate that,” Macron said in an interview with evening talk show C à Vous on Wednesday evening.
Questioned whether he thought the actor had brought shame on France, Macron replied that he was a “great admirer of Depardieu” and that he “had made France proud.”
Depardieu’s treatment of women on and off the set has been under public scrutiny following the airing of France 2 investigative show Complément d’Enquête on December 7.
Prior to its broadcast, Depardieu already faced one charge of rape in the courts filed by actress Charlotte Arnould in 2018.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Michael Mann’s Ferrari are facing allegations — surprising for two films focused on straight white male protagonists — of cultural appropriation.
French and Italian critics have taken offense at the directors’ decisions to cast American actors to play national icons — Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, the general who became French emperor, and Adam Driver as visionary Italian carmaker Enzo Ferrari — and, adding insult to injury, having them speak in English.
“It’s original sin,” wrote a Ferrari reviewer for Italy’s Movieplayer magazine on the casting of Driver, alongside Spanish actor Penélope Cruz as Ferrari’s wife, Laura, and American Shailene Woodley as his mistress. “Not just to have them speak English, but with a dodgy Italian accent.”
“Deeply clumsy, unnatural and unintentionally funny” was French GQ’s assessment of the very French characters of Napoleon and his lover Josephine (played by Brit Vanessa Kirby) speaking en anglais.

2023 was a surprisingly great year for several movie genres, but action fans in particular had a bounty of terrific options to choose from. When it came time for a few of the /Film writers and editors to get together and rank our favorites, our individual lists were overflowing with great titles. But in accordance with the unwritten laws/demands of the Internet, we were forced to make some tough decisions, whittle our choices down to a collective ten films, and rank them accordingly.
As is often the case, the movies that didn't make this list could easily comprise an impressive list of their own. When the inventive and propulsive "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," the energetic and comedic "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," the brutal and pulpy "Sisu," the touching and hilarious "Polite Society," and the moody and subversive "The Killer" get relegated to honorable mentions, it becomes clear how...

“I was actually designing ‘House of Gucci’ when I was approached about ‘Napoleon,'” says Jana Carboni, the makeup designer for Ridley Scott‘s biographical film about the French emperor. “I loved the idea. At 24, Edouard Philipponnat has already worked with powerhouse director Ridley Scott twice and his latest project Napoleon has him going toe to toe with the likes of Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby.
The rising French-Finnish actor chatted with JustJared.com about the experience shooting his new film, a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.
Edouard tells us that co-star Joaquin is “intimidating in his nature because he is that good” but is “so generous and kind as a performer. He helps you bring everything out of the scene.”
As for Vanessa, Edouard says that there was “a lot of laughter and toe stepping was involved. She was a class act. I think she pretended like it was hard for her too to make me feel better.”

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” is a movie that French people love to hate. But despite harsh criticism in France, the historical epic smashed the box office and grossed over $9.76 million from 1.15 million tickets sold in its first two weeks in theaters.
Ironically, “Napoleon” got the lowest score of all of Scott’s recent movies on Allociné, the local equivalent of IMDb, with 2.3 stars out of 5 from 4,659 users’ reviews, yet it’s one of Scott’s biggest hits in France. “Napoleon,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as Napoléon Bonaparte, a Corsica-born officer who became Emperor of France, and Vanessa Kirby as his wife as Joséphine de Beauharnais, world premiered in Paris on Nov. 14, a few days after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Scott’s last two movies, “The Last Duel” and “House of Gucci,” were warmly reviewed in France, and yet they sold only 425,000 and 800,000 tickets respectively during their releases there.

It’s another big year for Joaquin Phoenix. After winning Best Actor in 2020 for his sick spin on a supervillain in Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” the Academy Award winner appeared as a journalist taking care of his young nephew in Mike Mills’ A24 family drama “C’mon, C’mon.” Then, Phoenix was back at the indie studio with another project: Ari Aster’s third feature, “Beau Is Afraid.” The surreal horror comedy expands on an Aster short from 2011, and stars Phoenix as Beau — “a paranoid man on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother” — alongside Nathan Lane, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Patti LuPone, Amy Ryan, and Parker Posey.

Ridley Scott has the giggles. The revelation that I’m a New Yorker has prompted the legendary director to launch into a winding tale of the time he was on a traveling scholarship after graduating from London’s Royal College of Art.
“They said, ‘Where do you want to go?’ And, being a 22-year-old in London, I said, ‘I want to go to New York,’” he recalls.
When he arrived in the Big Apple, Scott was told that the most reasonably priced place to stay while on a grant was the Ymca.

This article contains spoilers for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.
Even in the first trailer, it is an immensely chilly spectacle. On a frozen field in central Europe, Napoleon Bonaparte, the supreme general and Emperor of France, holds the high ground. From a well-fortified and concealed position among many trees, his army has laid a perfect trap for the forces of the Austrian and Russian empires. And from their embankment, they watch coolly as the enemy blunders right into a massacre.
In the ensuing chaos, thousands of men, horses, and rolling cannons attempt to flee the thunderous crack of Napoleon’s artillery, but to no avail. Spotting a weakness as the Russian army desperately tries to retreat across a frosted lake, Napoleon has his cannons aim directly at the ice. Man and beast alike cry in agony as the white mirror beneath their feet cracks, and a frigid, horrifying death rushes...

Walk The Line star Joaquin Phoenix was in Madrid to attend the premiere of Napoleon at the El Prado Museum.
Napoleon centers around French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s role in the French Revolution, as well as his relationship with Empress Josephine. Phoenix plays Napoleon in the film, and Mission Impossible actress Vanessa Kirby stars as Joséphine.
The film has received mixed reviews, with many criticizing its historical inaccuracies.
“I’ve done a lot of historical films,” director Ridley Scott told Total Film magazine. “I find I’m reading a report of someone else’s report 100 years after the event. So I wonder, ‘How much do they romance and elaborate? How accurate is it?’ It always amuses me when a critic says to me, “This didn’t happen in Jersulaem.’ I say, ‘Were you there? That’s the f—ing answer.'”
Speaking with Empire magazine, Phoenix said that those who “want to really understand Napoleon…...

The infamous French emperor and military commander Napoleon Bonaparte would be proud.
Ridley Scott’s new historical epic Napoloen, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, is turning into the surprise victor of the Thanksgiving box office. The film, which opened Wednesday across North America, is on course to earn as much as $36.5 million to $37.5 million for the five-day holiday corridor, putting it in an unexpectedly close race with Disney Animation’s Wish.
From Apple Original Films and Sony, Napoleon is coming in well ahead of expectations despite receiving a not-so-victorious B- CinemaScore from moviegoers. Males made up nearly 70 percent of Wednesday’s audience, while more than half of ticket buyers were over the age of 35, including 15 percent over the age of 55, according to PostTrak exits. The movie earned $7.7 million for the day, including $3 million in previews.

Plot: The true story of Napoleon Bonaparte’s ruthless rise to power and his obsessive love for his first wife, Empress Josephine (Vanessa Kirby).
Review: Napoleon has proven a formidable adversary for filmmakers to topple. No less than Stanley Kubrick tried and failed to mount a lavish Napoleon biopic, but other than the contained and costly Russian flop Waterloo and the silent Abel Gance movie, the infamous military commander has never gotten the big-budget epic he deserved. Leave it to Ridley Scott, at 85, to finally do what Kubrick couldn’t – make the definitive Napoleon movie.
Scott’s film, written by his All the Money in the World scribe David Scarpa, continues an interesting trend the director began with his underrated The Last Duel. It deconstructs the heroic myth of the epics Scott himself helped popularize, emphasizing the domestic affairs of his anti-heroes as much as the wars they wage. Joaquin Phoenix,...
