Canadian-American indie rock band Metric have been around the block many a time — 20 years, to be precise. Since making their full-length debut with 2003’s Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, they’ve raked in several Juno Awards, an impressive number of chart rankings and movie soundtrack placements. And though they’ve yet to have their major pop breakthrough in the United States, they say they’re not hurting for one anytime soon.

On Metric‘s new song “Dark Saturday,” singer Emily Haines explores the disconnect between the spoiled and the self-made.
“I meet her in the world below/ She’s a tourist of the world beneath,” she sings over surging distortion and buzzing synths. “I said ‘Everything, I’ve built from nothing/ She said ‘I’m so rich, everything’s free.'”
“Dark Saturday” is the indie rock band’s first new release since their 2015 LP, Pagans in Vegas. The Canadian quartet are collaborating with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Tegan and Sara,...

ScreenJunkies are back with their latest Honest Trailer, and this one takes a look at Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. By now, you know what you're getting when you tune in to one of these things: stale jokes, surface level commentary, etc. As someone who read the comics and really enjoys this movie, I feel like this video doesn't engage very much with the movie. There's a lot more going on here than this Honest Trailer gives the film credit for.
One of my fondest pop culture-related memories is being at Comic-Con in 2010 when Wright led a select group of Hall H to a theater to unveil the movie right there in San Diego, with Metric playing live on stage.
Also — and it's been a while since I read the whole series, so maybe I have this wrong — but doesn't the comic end with Scott and Ramona together,...

With three films spanning just shy of 10 years, Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy ends this weekend, but it ends with a bang. The director's third film in his loose trilogy — which always includes his pals Simon Pegg and Nick Frost — is "The World's End" — a sci-fi-ish pub crawl comedy with heart and mind that actually focuses on nostalgia for one's youth, the meaning of friendship and even the idea of how globalization can change what you once knew as home. A funny, entertaining and fitting ending to the Cornetto trilogy (which includes "Shaun Of The Dead" and "Hot Fuzz"), music has been integral to all of Wright's films including his pop-soundtrack-stacked, "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" (which featured the likes of Beck, Broken Social Scene, Metric and more). And as a film that also acts as a warning about the dangers of nostalgia, the soundtrack to "The World's End" looks...

Most people who have made it to the top of their field have hit some roadblocks along the way, such as failed projects, bad bosses and being passed over for a promotion.
What about those who were actually fired, and worked their way up from the bottom again?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for adult women is 6.5 percent. Over 500,000 U.S. workers were laid off in 2012. Getting fired happens, for reasons ranging from the practical to the purely ridiculous. But losing your job does not mean that your future is over.
Here are eight women who have been let go from jobs, but didn't let it stop them from finding huge success later on.

We haven't given a lot of coverage to Cosmopolis aside from Andrew's highly positive review, but knowing how many Cronenberg fans there are around here, we wanted to pass on the news that the film's Blu-ray/DVD release date from Entertainment One is January 1, 2013.
From the Press Release:
From director David Cronenberg (A History of Violence, Dead Ringers, Eastern Promises) and based on the prophetic novel by Don DeLillo, comes Cosmopolis, a contemporary thriller that turns into a wild, hypnotic odyssey through our new millennium's obsessions with power, money, control, information, technology, violence, sex, mortality, revolution, destruction, and, ultimately, redemption. Available on New Year's Day, 2013, Entertainment One presents this acclaimed 2012 U.S. theatrical release on Blu-ray and DVD, packed with extras including a "Citizens of Cosmopolis" featurette, audio commentary with director Cronenberg and interviews with the cast and crew.

Music and sound are not just elements that underscore select scenes in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, they are each specifically discussed and used in the story itself. Cosmopolis follows 28-year-old billionaire Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) as he drives around Manhattan over the course of a day, trying to get from one end of the city to the other to get a haircut. A seemingly simple premise, but as any Cronenberg fan (or those who have read Don DeLillo’s novel) know, it does not stay simple for long. It is clear that Eric is incredibly rich and his wealth has caused him to become removed from (although still amused by) the general population – a point that is further driven home as he travels through town in a showy, tricked out, bulletproof white stretch limousine. The score, created by composer Howard Shore and indie rock band Metric, may start the film at a kinetic pace with “White Limos...

‘I know this’ is a frequent mantra of many of the broadly stricken characters in David Cronenberg’s film Cosmopolis, his new adaptation of the 2003 novella by Dom Delillo, as a statement of fact it is as reliable and secure as this wildly uneven post-millennium study which feels at least a decade behind the curve, as snarled up in its cultural critiques as Eric Packer’s unwieldy mode of transport is asphyxiating in the web of New York streets. As I took my seat in the local multiplex I was highly amused to bear witness to a seemingly endless parade of trailers for the most nauseatingly trite rom-coms - I just can’t imagine why they are anticipating a vapid female audience for this movie – as well as being presented with a first look at Soderbergh’s upcoming male stripper drama Magic Mike.

So, er, yeah. It turns out Robert Pattinson can really act.
It’s a tried and tested route for a teen idol to gain some indie cred – hook up with an edgy, indie director. The actor gets to give some spiel how he loved the director’s ‘early, more difficult films’, and the director gets instant funding for his pet project.
And so, R-Patz teams up Canadian psycho-sexual body horror pioneer David Cronenberg (he of The Fly, Naked Lunch, Eastern Promises and Crash) for an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s satirical sci-fi fable Cosmopolis. Pattinson plays Eric Packer, an arrogant, soulless billionaire executive, who rolls through a psuedo-future New York in a souped-up limo whilst being besieged by assassination attempts, anti-capitalist protesters and celebrity funerals, with the simple aim of getting a hair cut.
And Pattinson totally kills the role. He’s dismissive and elitist, yet also dripping with charisma and downright swagger.

Directed by David Cronenberg, the film follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he's chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut. David Cronenberg has been a forward-thinking guy at many points in his career, but the overall tone of his films tends more towards the classic than the contemporary. He has relied upon Howard Shore to score his films for over thirty years. While some of those scores have been as unusual as the films they complemented, none have exactly been rock. (Even Crash, an absolutely brilliant score based around reverb and guitar, is far less rock than, say, Neil Young's Dead Man, a similar score.) So it's a surprise to hear that Canadian rock band Metric, of whom you may know thanks to their song 'Black Sheep,' used in Scott Pilgrim, will collaborate with Howard Shore on the score for Cronenberg's upcoming Cosmopolis. The band revealed the collaboration on its official site [1] (via The Playlist [2]). The quote goes: We just confirmed we will be working with our...

Metric have announced on their official website that they are teaming up with composer Howard Shore on the score for the drama Cosmopolis. As previously reported, Shore is scoring the movie directed by David Cronenberg and starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Kevin Durand, Jay Baruchel and Samantha Morton. The film centers on a multimillionaire who risks his fortune to bet against the yen on a cataclysmic day. Metric have previously collaborated with Shore on The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, for which they co-wrote the end titles song Eclipse (All Yours). Cosmopolis has recently entered post-production and is expected to be released in 2012.

We’re beyond psyched to see how traditionally understated Joe Wright ("The Soloist") directs his way around a full-tilt action vehicle when "Hanna" arrives in theaters on April 8. The film follows the story of a teenage girl (played by Saoirse Ronan, who Wright first worked with in “Atonement”) raised as an assassin by her ex-cia agent father Erik (the always delightful Eric Bana). Hanna’s father ultimately sends her on a quest that takes her across Europe, where she’s tailed by the agents of a mysterious operative (Cate Blanchett) and racks up a pretty epic body count in the process.

Behold the best movie soundtracks of last year. After what seemed like a sluggish start, 2010 actually turned out to be a pretty decent one for motion picture soundtracks. Not a great one admittedly, with there scarcely being a glut of classic albums as we survey the output of the year just gone from the hindsight-tabulous vantage point of January 2011. But a handful sneaked through to thrill us lucky listeners.
If we’re looking for trends with which to characterise 2010, then two things stand out. Firstly, the sheer importance of music to the entire endeavour of movie-making was underlined for the nth but not final time, with many of the best soundtracks of the year belonging to what were also some of the best films of the year (The Social Network, Black Swan, Monsters). And secondly, that while some of the old guard are delivering increasingly formulaic work (Danny Elfman, I am looking at you.

And secondly, that while some of the old guard are delivering increasingly formulaic work (Danny Elfman, I am looking at you.

Much of this past year was spent talking about the visual aspect of movies, what with the whole 3-D revolution (or plague, depending on your perspective) and the increased sophistication of CGI effects. But let’s not forget the other half of the audio/visual equation.
There were plenty of musical moments to celebrate at the theater in 2010, and fans of film soundtracks had plenty to hang their hats on.
Here are our picks for the best of the bunch, and whether your tastes run to hip-hop, rock, or just a big, ol’ “Bonnnnng” sound, there’s something here for your ears.
9. ‘Grown Ups’
There wasn’t much to celebrate about the latest Happy Madison production (unless you were one of the film’s stars and got to hang out with your comedian buddies for a couple months on the company dime), but if there’s one thing every Adam Sandler movie knows,...

At some point over the past 20 years, movie soundtracks went from being well-curated mixtapes that served as companion pieces to the actual films in question to a simple conglomeration of throwaway hit singles and up-and-coming artists that labels are desperate to promote. So when a great movie soundtrack comes along, it feels extra special when compared to the developments of recent history. The MTV Newsroom Blog takes movie soundtracks very seriously, which is why we've been keeping close tabs on the developments in the soundtrack universe over the past 12 months. And while 2010 wasn't as great as, say, 1999 (the year that the accompanying albums to "Fight Club," "The Matrix," "Go" and "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut" all delivered exceptional results), there were still some excellent soundtracks this year. In no particular order, here are the five best movie soundtracks of 2010.

Edgar Wright talks to us about the reaction to Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, his viewing habits, the film's music and a whole lot more...
Back in August, we were so excited for the release of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World that we were utterly baffled by the lukewarm response that greeted the film at the box office. Now, four months later, our collective love hasn't dimmed - if our end of year poll is anything to go by, where it was placed second overall - and we're hoping it finds a new lease of life on DVD and Blu-ray.
To celebrate the home release, we had the chance to pick the brains of the director himself, Edgar Wright. This is a treat and a half, because, no matter what your misgivings with the film were (if you had any at all), Scott Pilgrim was the high-budgeted coming out party...

The best soundtracks of 2010 are somewhat varied and random. Not always does a great film produce great music and sometimes a horrible film can have decent music, there is no pattern. Thus, I have made my own very subjective selective pattern. Using my main theory that a soundtrack is best when it reflects and capitalizes on the moments and story of the film and weaker when its motive is good music placed thoughtlessly in scenes, each inclusion still has its own exceptions. For instance, monotony is not a highly praised quality, but see how many Brian Eno and Broken Social Scene tracks are present on this list! So read, enjoy, agree or disagree because it is all in good fun.
10. It’s Kind of a Funny Story
Though I am generally disappointed that the Broken Social Scene score was not included anywhere on the soundtrack, the remaining inclusions of Bss...

Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" promises to be one of the biggest film events of the early part of 2011, but the 16-year-old Canadian singer could get quite a big boost from another piece of culture that shares the same name. The shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Original Song just got released, and Bieber's "Never Say Never" (his duet with Jaden Smith that was the theme song of the summer smash "The Karate Kid") is on that list.
There are a total of 41 tracks included on the short list, and from that massive batch, as many as five finalists will be named when the rest of the nominations are announced on January 25. It's not a guarantee that Bieber could be nominated for gold, as he is up against favorites like Cher's "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" (from "Burlesque"), John Legend's "Shine" (from "Waiting for 'Superman'...

We are only two months away from the Oscars, and members of the Academy are hard at work trying to decide who best deserves one of those five nomination slots.
Today, they released their shortlist for Best Original Song which tops out at an impressive 41 songs.
But we can already make an educated guess as to which five will be competition on Oscar night based on who the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards favored, and none of them involve Justin Bieber or Debbie Gibson.
“I See the Light” from “Tangled” earned a Best Song nod from both, as did “If I Rise” from “127 Hours” and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from “Burlesque.” Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3″ also seems a lock, since all of Newman’s songs for Disney/Pixar have scored nominations over the years.

Universal Home Entertainment have just sent us this new exclusive clip from the Edgar Wright directed movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World which you’ll be able to see on the Blu-ray and DVD when it’s released in the UK on 27th December.
Scott Pilgrim stars Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Bill Hader and Brie Larson who we get to see in this new clip. Larson plays Envy Adams in fictious band, Clash at Demonhead in the movie and whether she’s actually singing in this clip or not is debatable but nonetheless, she’s looking good singing a song which is titled Black Sheep by Metric. It is interspliced with the graphic novel characters (the evil exes) on which the movie is based.

For the last two years (and for the next two to come), Twilight saga movies have taken over the box office at the end of November and early December. This year, Twi-hards are heading to stores to buy DVDs rather than filling movie theaters. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third movie in the series based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels, which was released in June 2010, is now out on DVD and Blu-ray.
The Film
The tagline for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is, “It all begins … with a choice.” And, in essence, that’s true. But I think it’s more about Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) coming to terms with the choices she’s already made. At the end of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Bella asks best friend (and werewolf) Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) not to make her choose between him and her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) because...

Chicago – One of the biggest films of 2010, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” comes home to Blu-ray and DVD this weekend and the release is a surprisingly-complete set for the best film yet in the blockbuster franchise. With commentary tracks, a ton of behind-the-scenes material, deleted scenes, and great HD video, “Eclipse” could satisfy even moderate fans of the franchise.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Despite its significant flaws, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is, without question, the best of the three “Twilight” films. Even with that fact aside, the Blu-ray and DVD release of the title is impressive. When a franchise has this many hardcore fans, it must be tempting for a studio to produce the bare minimum. Seriously, how many tweens putting “Eclipse” on their Christmas wish list really care about special features, video quality, and commentaries? They’d want their favorite movie no matter what. And so it’s nice to see a...

There are drawbacks to writing this “Twilight” column: teasing from colleagues, friends and family; knowing more about Robert Pattinson than any straight man should; getting caught in message board arguments with 10-year-old girls.
However, I also get some sweet perks. Upon receiving my advance copy of the 2-Disc Special Edition “Eclipse” DVD (woot woot!), I was so stoked that I ignored the playfully demeaning note from my editor attached to it (yep, even my editor mocks me).
Aside from the film, the DVD (or Blu-ray for you fancy types) includes audio commentary from Rob Pattinson & Kristen Stewart, audio commentary from Stephenie Meyer & producer Wyck Godfrey, eight deleted/extended scenes, a 90-minute making-of documentary, a photo gallery, music videos from Metric and Muse, and a special feature that allows you to jump to scenes with Edward or Jacob.

On November 1st, Guillermo del Toro interviewed Edgar Wright at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood after a screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I think del Toro said it best when he said, "If you haven't seen [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World], you're a motherf*cker." Strong words, but the passion behind them is as genuine as the movie itself. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of my favorite films of the year and one of those special movies that comes along every few years that perfectly captures the essence of a generation.

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.
While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.
Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw.
